Tobacco

Tobacco is native to the Western continents of Ayana and Tzalxochitl. It was introduced to Eyropa by the Darleone elves. It is now grown in any wet area near to the equator, with southeastern Ayana and south Tian Xia being the largest exporters. It is smoked from a pipe, although is sometimes fashioned into cigarettes or cigars by being rolled in paper. It is popularly smoked through elegant water pipes during group meetings in some areas. It is legal everywhere.

Marijuana

Marijuana is a common drug throughout the Eyropan empire and beyond. It grows as a weed in a variety of climates, making it cheap to produce at great quantities. The high it produces is extremely mild relative to modern Earth's genetically modified varieties. It is legal everywhere on Pal Tahrenor, and in many parts it is not considered a drug.

Copiax, or Astral Dust, is a magic inducing drug banned in many places on Pal Tahrenor because of its inherent danger. The user often gains some level of magical ability while using it, as the drug causes a local weakening of the Seal. The user may experience effects similar to being close to the Serpent's coil. Overdoses on copiax are not uncommon, although they can be hard to detect as they might leave nothing of the user but a bloodied mess. It is expensive to produce, so it is used most often in high society and aristocracy.

Opium

Opium is harvested from poppy flowers, which are hardy plants found all over the Eyropan empire and beyond. A white latex substance is obtained from the flowers, which dry to a brown resin. This resin is then scraped off. Raw opium is often smoked in opium pipes, especially when mixed with tobacco. It is sometimes sold to other manufactures, who use it to create morphine. Opium is legal in many areas, especially in Tian Xia, but is illegal in Marn.

Morphine

Morphine is extracted from raw opium using acid, precipitation, and separating the morphine from other compounds found in opium. Morphine is easier to transport for the illegal drug trade and is an illicit drug in more areas than opium itself. Morphine is also used medicinally as anesthesia and to treat severe pain.

Heroin

Heroin is created using a complicated, and often partially magical, filtration and separation process on a base of morphine. It is sometimes used medicinally to treat chronic, severe pain, but is more often found in the illegal drug trade. It is a much rarer drug to come by than opium because it is difficult to manufacture. This makes it more expensive than other drugs and more likely to be sold to aristocracy and nobility.

Medicines

Marn's current Minister of Health, Guile, is stricter than previous Ministers on the regulation of magically-tainted medicines. As a result, many previously legal medicines are now under review.

Goldenseal

A fever reducing tincture. It is gold in colour and tastes bad.

Margoritol

A pain-killer. It is made using a partial magical process, so it is currently under review by the government of Marn.

Micatoxin

A fever reducing tablet. It is under review by the government of Marn as one of the ingredients is suspected to be magical in origin.

Orakitin

A weak anti-inflammatory agent.

Oxycilliton

A pain-killer and fever reducer only given in small doses. It is often added to other medicines to supplement their effects.

Parikethanol

An anti-inflammatory agent which comes in a tablet.

Willowbark

A fever reducing tincture.

Breath of Teodinus

Made from the leaves of the astral sage plant, breath of Teodinus is the Marnian name for the harvested plant. It provokes something of an allergic reaction in magic users, resulting in its use by the Puradyne faith.
