Azer sat at the bar of the Drunken Rat Tavern, sipping a drink. As he sipped he thought about last night's troubles. He still couldn't believe he had run into magic creatures in an underground bar in the woods. He knew better than to tell anyone of course, but still it unnerved him. Slowly his mind wondered to the decor of the place, which was rather bland, and eventually on to wondering vaguely how to approach the bartender for the information he needed.
He turned to the man, a greasy looking fellow who was a bit round in the middle. Barkeep', he yelled, slapping the bar. The man looked at him, his expression bored. Me name's Tom, ya know. Sorry Tom, Azer said intentionally putting on a fake accent, but ah was jus wonderin about some rumors ah been hearin and whether or not you could sort 'em out? Depends, said Tom with a slightly less bored look on his face, what rumors? Well, Azer replied, mostly some stuff I been hearin 'bout vampires in Shim? Tom, seemed to get more interested, putting down the glass he had been wiping. You're new in town aintcha? he questioned. Why do you ask, azer shot back maybe just a bit too quickly. Easy now no need to get bothered, it's just that vampire rumors are old news to us locals, and I only ever get questions about them from newcomers. Azer hadn't counted on this, he had expected that people asking about rumors would be as common as them ordering drinks. Naw, Azer replied his mind working furiously to come up with a good excuse, I just nevah got the chance to come outa the shanties much, and theres so many rumors there ya can’t trust none of em. But then I heard about the vampires in this very tavern and decided if it’s being talked about here it might as well be true. Tom eyed him suspiciously and then shrugged; well I guess that makes sense. I don’t know much, just that people say vampires creep around the cemetery there, and that the locals in shim stay away from the place, they say it’s haunted. Something just ain’t right about it, they say, like you get a bad feeling whenever you go near, you know? Yeah, Azer replied casually, think any o’ the rumors might be true? Don’t know, said Tom shrugging his shoulders, could be. Azer stood, thanks. He flipped a coin onto the bar and gestured to the door, I think I’ll go. All right then Tom responded in a board voice. Azer left, and once outside in the sunlight he decided to take a little trip down to the Historic District.
