Name: Soneya
Age: 17
Race: Human
Physical Description: Soneya is about normal height but a little too thin. While she does have a hint of curves that show she is in fact a young woman, she is lacking in muscles and fat for the most part. Her bright blonde, almost white hair is flowing down past her shoulders in straight lines. She has clear blue eyes, and though she often has a suffering look on her face due to fairly regular headaches, she always tries to keep a smile on her face. Soft features and a friendly demeanour are what draw a lot of people to her, most of all children, despite her own young age.
She tends to wear loose fitting clothes to hide the fact that she would need a little bit more meat on her bones and in order to give her more freedom to move. She doesn’t like being restricted by tight-fitting clothes, and even her hair is rarely tightened by a pin or hair band, worn open instead. Her preferred colour to wear is light blue. Soft leather shoes complete a fairly unnoticeable outfit.
Possessions: There are only two possessions in her life that she really cares about. One is a traveller’s cloak in a dark gray which is a couple of sizes too large for her but she really doesn’t mind. The other is a necklace and her most prized possession. It consists of a stone formed into an odd shape over the years and it is fastened to a worn-down leather string. Both of these items have been handed down to her from her grandfather. Considering the fact that she still lives with her parents, nothing around the house really belongs to her apart from the little bit of money she is earning herself.
Powers or strengths: Her most prominent strength is that she is always willing to help people, especially children. It breaks her heart to see a child in tears or in need and she often spends her money to put a smile on their young faces.
The potential to do magic lies dormant within her. She could even be quite proficient at it, if she were taught how to properly use it, because she is quite a quick learner in most respects. Should she ever allow herself to tap into her magic, she would find that it is the reason why she feels so drawn to water. She could sense water practically anywhere, even if it were an underground source. Moreover, she would be able to manipulate water to a certain extent, casting smaller spells along the lines of frostbolts, or merely being able to purify dirty water, to name a few.
Another strength of hers is that she is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. Her parents have educated her well in that respect and unless she is speaking to a figure of authority, she will not hold her tongue when it comes to defending what she believes is right. Her parents are Puradyne and so is she, and she will not hesitate to enforce her beliefs, no matter what the cost.
Weaknesses: As much as her kindness is a strength, it is at the same time a weakness which will likely someday cause her to get into a lot of trouble because she quite simply has a very hard time saying no.
The fact that Soneya is forcing down her magic, though it mostly happens unconsciously these days, gives her regular headaches. Sometimes they are even so bad that she can barely bring herself to eat or even leave the house. It also causes her mood to fluctuate a little on very bad days and she can thus snap quite quickly at people without actually meaning to.
Soneya doesn’t always register everything that is going on around her, practically appearing to live inside a bubble sometimes, which puts her at a bit of a disadvantage in certain situations. Her headaches are cause for this on one hand, but on the other hand, she is putting up a blockade herself by refusing to believe anything that contradicts what her parents have taught her.
Her aversion to magic is very strong and though it does not make her physically sick like repressing her own magic does, it does make her life fairly complicated for the obvious reason that she, in fact, would despise herself if only she were to accept that she actually is a mage herself.
History/Background: Soneya comes from a Puradyne family devoted to the cause of the government and the judges, a family who practically venerates these individuals to be gods. They despise magic and thus also the battlemages, though they do understand that they are a necessary evil they must accept so that the people will not completely succumb to the darkness of this world. Magic is a curse to them and anyone afflicted by it should be relieved thereof, by all means necessary.
Soneya doesn’t understand much of what is happening around her and the ways of the world seem confusing to her at times, but she doesn’t know much about anything anyway apart from what her parents have told her, which she believes to be the truth. Magic for instance is a bad thing, thus she keeps the fact that she has felt magic stir within her at numerous occasions to herself. It is not something to be talked about, but rather to be confined to the deepest corners of her mind where dust will sooner or later settle over the whole matter and she will never have to think about magic ever again. In the meantime, she has grown so used to repressing this almost natural instinct of wanting to tap into her magic that she doesn’t even realise she is doing it anymore. After all, she follows the lead of the government and in that case, magic was dead to her, even if it resided within her.
However, though she may not exactly know what to do with this fact other than try to ignore it, her parents have noticed that she is not quite how they had wished her to be. On the contrary, she grew into what they hoped they would never have to face again. They have slowly learned to despise their own daughter, though as long as she doesn’t make nuisance of herself, they tolerate her and try not to make her feel their dislike. However, they have taken her out of school at a fairly young age already because they feared she might make herself noticed in a bad way. In their opinion, if she worked, she would be kept busy and would not be able to get any nonsense into her head about things her parents have specifically never told her.
Unbeknownst to Soneya, as much as her parents hate and fear magic, the latter has been running in the family for many generations, weak in most who ever showed signs but present nonetheless. It is the reason why her grandfather was and still is to this day considered a black sheep in a perfect family record of government loving, magic free individuals. It is also the reason why Soneya’s grandfather has died so suddenly without any previous warning and perfect health. The only things he left behind were two keepsakes he insisted on Soneya having before he went out on an errand one day and never came back. Nobody ever told her what had happened, but she had never asked either, sensing that she would not even get a better response than “There has been an accident.” And so she decided to keep her grief to herself and seek comfort by burying herself in the cloak and never taking off the necklace so as to keep close to her grandfather whom she had loved dearly.
Since the age of thirteen, Soneya has been employed as a housekeeper by one of the cityguard’s commanders. Not once did she complain about this. On the contrary, as much as possible, she kept going through the motions her job required with a smile on her face – unless she was suffering from migraines. After all, it was an honour to be doing a favour to one of the people’s noble defenders, and with the money, little as it may be, she could put a smile on someone else’s face too.
