Navarre watched the rain pour down from her seat on the veranda, a teacup pressed to her lips. As much as she enjoyed gardening on sunny days, she'd always loved watching storms from the comfort of her home. Knowing that people were wandering around the city getting soaking wet while she was warm and dry filled her with joy.
A little self-centered, perhaps, but she had a right to look down on them. She'd broken free from their simple existence centuries ago. They spent their days wasting away at their dead-end jobs, just so their children could do the same thing in a few years. It had taken her over a lifetime to escape that, so she was entitled to a little gloating. Besides, no matter how she looked at it, the fact remained that they were wet and miserable, and she was dry and happy.
Yes, she was happy. The happiest she'd been since her earliest days as Madelynne. And once her campaign entered its next stage, even happier days were sure to come.
She looked at her maid. "Go to the front door and wait for Peppercorn, then bring her around the back. I don't want her tracking mud in my house. Then go inside and pour her a cup of tea, I'm sure she'll want one."
Her maid nodded, then grabbed an umbrella and headed inside to meet Peppercorn when she arrived. Navarre sipped her drink and picked up a sheet of paper from the table. She'd gotten Peppercorn her potential replacements for Lars, so hopefully the woman would cooperate with her. The Lars incident would take up much of her next publication, but she needed more information to flesh it out.
