Name: "Uh... my name is Fletcher. Well... Simon actually. Simon Fletcher if you put the two bits next to eachother."
Race: Human
Occupation: "I farm. Or did."
Age: 16, and painfully adolescent at times.
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 175 lbs.
Overall Physical Description: If there are men who are tall, dark, and mysterious, then Simon exists as their counterpart. Years of hard work on his parent's farm has given him broad shoulders and strong arms, but he is far from a maiden's fantasy. With straw-blonde hair just long enough to reach the fledgling whiskers at his chin, and sea blue eyes still alight with wonder at the world, Simon seems the ideal target for a pick-pocket or a con artist. His most attractive trait is his strong jaw, a feature that he inherited from his father (or so his mother told him). His nose is slightly crooked, as it was broken in a cattle accident in his younger days and never was set properly.
His attire is plain, the typical burlap and cotton clothes worn by working agriculturists.
Possession(s)
- Three changes of clothing, all made of dense wool or cotton.
- One traveling cloak made of green-dyed wool.
- A handful of Bishans - enough to get by.
- An old dagger, showing more than a hint of rust
- One old leather-bound book - no title on the front. Appears to be a diary.
Power(s)
Haywire: While not an ability he can consciously use, Simon has a unique and very bizarre "feature". Any sort of magic used around him typically tends to conjure a different effect than was anticipated by the caster. For example, a mage may attempt to cast a fireball, but would instead conjure up a small dark cloud that rained salmon upon him. Or a healer would attempt to cast a minor restorative spell, but would wind up repairing someone's shoes rather than healing their injuries. Exactly what will happen is never known, but it can certainly make some situations better... or far worse.
Bright: This isn't magical in any sense, but Simon is a very bright lad. His intelligence isn't superhuman, but he has just enough of an edge over the common man that he can usually talk or charm his way out of most "uncomfortable" situations. Barring that, he's quite an accomplished runner.
Weaknesses
First and foremost, Simon is a farmer. He has very little actual combat training (i.e. none). If he were forced to fight an experienced warrior in one on one combat, he would surely be overwhelmed. This is where his long legs and excellent cardio come into play - those who fight and run away, live to fight another day.
Haywire: While it can be a boon in certain cases, Haywire also means that any magic (even beneficial) cast upon Simon will almost certainly have unintended consequences. This means almost no magical healing, or any of the other benefits granted by magic.
History
"I'm from a little town called Warrick. It was northwest of Shim a couple days by horseback. We were a collection of farmers and traders, peddling out our wares to whoever happened to pass by. Sure, we had our occasional scuffles with the local wildlife, but it was never too bad. We had old Guss as our militia captain - veteran of a couple o' different skirmishes, but with who or what he never said, and we never bothered to ask. As for meself, I spent most of my time farming with my ma. Dad wasn't around - he hadn't been around since I was a babe. Whenever I brought it up with ma, she just told me that my pa had died to illness, and I was too young at the time to remember it.
So my life consisted mainly of planting and making eyes at the Thompson girl whenever I had the chance - she was a beaut, lemme tell you.
We didn't have much for fey folk in our town - we were mainly human - but we did have a Dwarven family that had decided to set up a smithy. Rurik, Baria, and their little boy. Rurik and his son had just went off to go pick up supplies from a nearby village. On the way back, they got ambushed by a pack of goblins and were killed. Baria locked 'erself in the family forge, never coming out for anything, and Guss started to round up any able-bodied man in the village to go root out those gobs once and for all.
We were a shoddy bunch - Alban the town Cleric, Daphne the tavern owner, old man Geralt, Guss, and about ten others, meself included. Grabbing what weapons we could, we shoved off into the woods. Didn't take long for Geralt to pick up a trail (he was a Woodsman back in his day - Ranger for some king people used to whisper). We eventually found an old cave hidden mostly by moss. Figures it'd turn out to be a Goblin Burrows, but with a twist - seems some old Warlock had taken up refuge there and was goadin' the Goblins into attackin' us and gathering supplies for some kind of evil magic.
If I'd had the 'condition' back then that I do now, perhaps the fight with the Warlock would have gone better. But I was just some normal sod back then, so instead we lost some good men down there. During the course of the fight, I wound up taking an arrow to the chest that knocked the wind out of me. All I remember is gettin' knocked down, and coming to for only a few moments at a time. Then I guess they dragged me outta the cave, 'cuz when I had my moments of consciousness, I was in me bed at home.
The next bit o' me story requires that you keep somethin' in mind - I was in a fever-induced stupor in my bed, so most of my information came second hand from ma or the Thompson girl (she would visit me every now and then). So if there are some holes in the story, it ain't my fault - I was fighting for my life, trying not to die the same way my pa had.
Apparently the old warlock had some magical gizmos in his cave. Guss decided it'd be good to gather them up and sell them at market to make a fund for Baria - that way she wouldn't be wantin' for anything. In the pile of magical odds and ends, there was a book. Strange book it was, for it was a big, leatherbound tome with all kinds of weird scratchings on it. Stranger still was the large iron padlock on the front, 'cuz the padlock didn't have a keyhole on it - t'was just a big lump of iron with some shiny metal chains keeping the book shut.
So anyway, they were havin' a celebration at Daphne's tavern when outta the blue, the same damned goblins we'd just killed appeared out of thin air! 'cept they didn't look quite the same - their bodies were made of some kind of blue fire, and you couldn't focus on 'em, but they always looked blurry like you were seein' them outta the corner of your eye. They wound up killin' them again, but not before a few more folk died.
Guss put two and two together, and went to go check up on the magic items he had locked in his shed. No one had broken into it, but when he checked, all the stuff was there 'cept for that big nasty looking book.
That's when all the weird stuff started happening.
I guess Alban was the first to go - apparently he locked himself inside the town church, and anyone who went in to go lookin' for him didn't come back out. Then one morning the whole church was gone - just vanished into thin air, along with all the folk that were sent inside.
Daphne was the second. Guess she was closing up one night, but she never made it outside. She just vanished too. No one went inside to go looking for her, not after what happened with Alban.
Geralt just up and left, spooked. No one was sure were he went.
Baria still hadn't left the Rurik forge - people passing by it could swear they heard the sounds of forgin' going on - not sure what she was making in there.
And then I remember blacking out from the fever again, then waking up to find... nothing.
My whole town was gone - even my bed. I was just laying on the ground, like none of it had ever been there. Guss, Ma, all of them were gone, like the town had never existed. And that's when I found out about my 'condition'... not really sure what any of it means.
And I know I sound nuts - like some loony. But I swear, it's all true - all of it. And don't go tellin' me that it was some feverish hallucination - all this stuff me ma told me while I was sick, and she ain't the kind of person to lie.
So here I am - in Shim. Took me awhile to get here, but I'm thinking maybe someone might know something here, or maybe in Marn. They got some wizard folk there, right? Maybe one of them knows something?"

Re: Simon Fletcher
Hello and welcome to Thar. I want to start off by thanking you for submitting a character. We have read through and reviewed your character.
While at first we debated the use of the Haywire ability, we have decided to allow you to keep it if you agree that when using it you will work with other players to determine what the outcome will be. We do not want to see this ability used to overpower other characters by making their powers useless. We feel that it is only fair that the player of the character who is to have their magic backfire on them has a say in what is to happen.
Another thing we wanted to bring up was that you wrote a significant section of your app in first person. While we have no rules against writing a character app in first person, we simply want to state that when it comes to writing in threads we write in third person.
Approved. You can post here and start to talk with other members about joining a thread. If you have any further questions or need some help getting started, feel free to ask in a PM or join us in chat.
