Sorin Degosi

Post by Sorin » Mon Nov 28, 2016 2:59 pm

Name: Sorin Witt Degosi
Age: 26
Race: Human
Height: 5’8”

Physical Description

Sorin is a fit man, training frequently for his work as a guardsman. His hair is cropped short, a strawberry blonde in tight curls, and his skin is rather pale, heavily freckled, and easily burned in the summer sun. His face has a shape that is relatively triangular, dimpled cheeks and a thin nose. His eyes, pale blue, are framed by pale lashes, below thin eyebrows a shade lighter than his hair. His teeth are smaller than average, and from his lower jaw and down his neck, thin and curly facial hair is kept roughly trimmed.

He is most often seen in his guardsman uniform, but off-duty is fond of long coats and loose trousers, and prefers darker colours as he insists they make him look more regal and imposing. Despite this, he gives the impression of having a warm personality, often laughing and smiling, and most people get along with him.

Possessions
  • Standard-issue weaponry for Marn guardsmen, specifically a pike, mace, and dagger; standard issue armor
  • A bed and locker in the barracks of Marn Guard HQ
Powers/Strengths
  • A trained guard in the city of Marn
  • 9 years experience within the Marn guard, almost 7 of those in a full capacity (as opposed to recruit training); specialized in combat with both pike and mace, but decent with other standard weaponry aside from bows
  • Better than most average guards with the weapons he's specialized in, enough to be quite seriously considered for promotion to commanding and training roles in future; average with a sword, which he tries to avoid using, preferring to bash in heads with a mace instead; pretty poor long-distance aim, so he's been told he needs to work more with bows and cannons
  • Dedicated, motivated, strong will when it comes to physical feats despite being weaker under social pressure
  • Has family in both Marn and Shim who are a source of support and companionship, although he doesn't get to see them as much as he'd like with his work schedule
Weaknesses/Flaws
  • Owns no home of his own; resides primarily in the Marn barracks, or with family if visiting Shim
  • Feels indebted to his parents, who still have a little too much control over his life despite not being present within it most of the time
  • Developing tendonitis/RSI in his right wrist from his work as a guard; often has to deal with the pain; has been considering getting the problem magically healed but has skepticism about the moral aspects of the decision
  • Has a recurring knee injury that acts up in colder months, causing him to have seemingly random days where he ends up limping; also exacerbated at times by excessive running, or if he puts pressure on it in certain ways
  • Tends to ignore personal problems or conflict when he feels threatened by them, resulting in unstable relationships outside of his family, and a tendency to associate with people who won't hold him responsible for his flaws (even if those people aren't very nice)
  • Ignorant about a lot of the political issues that have been causing tension throughout the city of late, despite his job causing him to become caught in a lot of the crossfire
  • Slightly scared of bats, doesn't like to touch them and feels uncomfortable near them

History

Sorin spent the first 17 years of his life in Shim, born to two hard-working farmhands who tended crops and livestock on the outskirts of the town. He was raised much like any child of Shim, with limited academic education and a strong respect for hard work and discipline; not to mention, a devout follower of the Puradynic teachings. Magic was a tale of horror to himself and his friends, a story made to scare children.

It would be a lie to say he’d never considered the use of magic. There were certainly times as a child where he tried to recreate the rituals he’d only heard about in whispers amongst the other children, sometimes to alter the weather to aid their farm's yield, or to end the torment provided by some bully. But nothing ever came of it, and he grew out of the behaviour before it was ever noticed, fortunately for him.

Sorin grew up alongside cousins, children of his father's brother and two sisters, who also lived in Shim. Sorin himself ended up with two sisters, one of which married a man from Marn when Sorin was still 14 and the sister in question, who moved in with her new husband in Marn, was 17. At that age, Sorin frequently trained to be a part of the Shim militia in his spare time with the guidance of one of his cousins, Damion, who was one of the militia leaders at the age of 24.

It wasn't until much later that Sorin realized just how poorly organized and under-trained the entire body of the militia really was but, nonetheless, it was a source of bonding, and a good hobby, for many of the local citizens. It was not only skill in combat that was taught, but practical skills for everyday life, or emergency skills such as fire-fighting, injury treatment, or survivalism. Puradynism was also strongly encouraged.

A few years later, Sorin was tasked, now and then, with traveling to Marn for various reasons, whether it be to check on his sister for his parents, or to aid in matters of business. Immediately, the guards of the city caught his attention. His time with the militia had given him a passion for the idea of law enforcement, protection of citizens, and the process of training for combat. He heard about, and even witnessed, just how skilled these uniformed guards were, and it quickly became his mission to join their ranks.

At seventeen, he finally made this dream a reality, being recruited with relative ease and training for several years, eventually becoming an official guard. The pay, however, was not enough for him to feel justified in purchasing or renting his own home, when he had affordable board at the Guard HQ available to him. He sent much of his money back home, his parents continuing to make him feel indebted to them well into his 20s. He'd had the idea beaten into him through his youth and had yet to realize just how much of his life he was giving away to his parents; it was a major element in the few failed short-term relationships Sorin had gone through during his time in Marn.

The most recent of these relationships has made him question a few of the things about his life, the girl, whom Sorin had been considering proposing to, had been very intelligent and insightful, and they'd argued many times about some of Sorin's issues: his devotion to his parents despite them treating him like he owed them everything; his willingness to turn a blind eye to issues too nuanced or too confronting; his insensitivity towards those who weren't necessarily treated with respect by the government of Marn...

However, before he could dedicate much time to thinking about matters of personal development, Sorin found himself in recent months dealing with a lot of pressure from work. Although his performance has been satisfactory, Sorin has been recommended for a promotion, provided he can keep up with the high standards now expected of him. On top of that, his cousin has been reporting strange events near their home in Shim, and asked Sorin to help him investigate the cause...
