Cai wrote:Hey Ree, since our schedules don't seem to match up to catch each other in chat very often, I might start using this to bounce ideas around as we continue with our narrative.

The next scene which I have any concrete plan for is the forest ambush (which should also feature the scene I am most looking forward to: the bagged dragon transformation scene), which happens 2 or so days from the present moment.

Was there a particular turn of events, or aspect of Tian Xia culture, that you wanted to explore in the narrative between the present point and that ambush? If so, please let me know a bit more so I don't stymie the scene by accident :)

If not, I think a time-skip of a couple of days might be in order, with the new scene starting along a heavily wooded forest path, a day's distance from the hot springs.
This is good. It's what plot discussion forums are for :)

So, I was thinking that lightning and wind from the storm would catch up to them during the ambush. I was thinking the ambushers has a low level tinkerer of a magic user that could make storms to help them out - create confusion and what not.

My keyboard is being odd and leaving out the letter "n." Oh bother.

nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnuh nhnnhnn nuh!

ok, I think that fixed it.

Right. Plot. Yes advancing time forward is cool. Explore the life style stuff only as you'd like. I know how much you like that world dev, stuff. Was trying to think of any interesting local gossip, or weirdly Capital-centric gossip that gets muddled because stories never retain pure unless its from people like the messenger. But I failed. Miserably. Sad me.

On the other hand. Naked dragons are an amusing thought. Oh yay. Spray cleaner for keyboards FTW!

Looking forward to continued posts!

P.S. I am so tired.

Bouncing ideas around with Joe. Ree, care to have Abmesh join the travelling companions?

-----------

(21:48:38) Abmesh_Gwaelei: Yo James. Been reading you and Ree's thread. Do you think there would be room for Abmesh in there? I've been thinking a lot about the lady of the chestnut tree. Perhaps Abmesh could be a "gift" of sorts from her, transported to you guys by planting a chestnut or some such.
(21:52:32) (SemiAFK_James): It is certainly feasible. I think the hook would have to be via a gift to Piao Bai. Cai is one of those duty-focused character tropes, and isn't generally inclined to want travelling companions (which is part of the fun dynamic of having the irrepressible Piao Bai permanently imposed on her day-to-day life)
(21:53:17) Abmesh_Gwaelei: Yeah, that was what I was thinking. He could for example emerge in the waystation, in the remnants of last evening's chestnut dinner, the wife having buried the shells. If one of you gets wounded in this scrap with the Black Gate, you could return to the waystation.
(21:55:03) (SemiAFK_James): They won't be returning to the waystation: the hot springs is closer. But if he has been following them since emerging, maybe being only half a day behind them, he might catch up shortly after the encounter - or even during, depending on how fast he can travel
(21:56:31) (SemiAFK_James): There's a lot of flexibility there, narratively speaking
(21:56:39) Abmesh_Gwaelei: Well... he's a head.
(21:56:54) (SemiAFK_James): That tells me nothing =D
(21:57:15) (SemiAFK_James): Things can roll pretty fast after all =p
(21:58:01) Abmesh_Gwaelei: Is it reasonable to assume that there might be a disused catapult on top of the waystation? :P
(21:58:12) (SemiAFK_James): No
(21:58:29) Abmesh_Gwaelei: fireworks?
(21:58:34) (SemiAFK_James): No
(21:58:56) (SemiAFK_James): And no giant slingshots either
(21:59:02) Abmesh_Gwaelei: hrm.
(21:59:36) Abmesh_Gwaelei: Metarie set me on the idea when she used Abmesh as one of the Lady's weird court. There, in astral form, Abmesh was some sort of principle of the all-seeing, with his face looking all directions at once.
(22:00:31) Abmesh_Gwaelei: It got me thinking that it might explain the mortal Abmesh's abysmal memory, when his astral form is used to viewing everything all at once, and thus doesn't need to remember anything.
(22:00:56) (SemiAFK_James): Makes sense
(22:01:01) Abmesh_Gwaelei: There might be some kind of secret to unlock, with Piao's help.
(22:02:04) Abmesh_Gwaelei: How about... a well-trained pony? The wife could strap Abmesh on, and it would return home after having caught him up with you two?
(22:02:14) (SemiAFK_James): No
(22:02:45) Abmesh_Gwaelei: Does this waystation have anything at all, besides 4 walls and a roof?
(22:02:53) (SemiAFK_James): Nope
(22:02:58) (SemiAFK_James): Well, a garden plot
(22:03:00) (SemiAFK_James): And a well
(22:03:07) Abmesh_Gwaelei: And a cooking pot, I saw mentioned
(22:03:23) Abmesh_Gwaelei: You guys still have some chestnuts around, yes?
(22:03:25) (SemiAFK_James): And a ramshackle stable for travellers - generally empty
(22:03:31) (SemiAFK_James): Pretty sure
(22:03:45) Abmesh_Gwaelei: Perhaps some of them roll out in the excitement and embed themselves in the mud.
(22:04:08) (SemiAFK_James): Quite possibly. But I do have one request:
(22:04:18) Abmesh_Gwaelei: fire away
(22:04:23) (SemiAFK_James): This next scene is meant to be the big reveal of Piao Bai's human form
(22:04:32) Abmesh_Gwaelei: ooh, sweet
(22:04:36) (SemiAFK_James): Everything was engineered towards that story point
(22:04:39) Abmesh_Gwaelei: wouldn't want to steal that thunder, no
(22:04:45) (SemiAFK_James): Cool
(22:05:05) Abmesh_Gwaelei: Obviously, we haven't asked Ree yet either
(22:05:10) Abmesh_Gwaelei: I'm just spitballing.
(22:05:18) (SemiAFK_James): http://www.tharshaddin.com/rp/viewtopi ... 15#p42538
(22:05:30) (SemiAFK_James): I think Ree would be pretty keen
(22:05:58) (SemiAFK_James): Generally I'm the OCD one who needs all the details in a narrative to achieve some kind of internal consistency =p
(22:06:33) Abmesh_Gwaelei: Totally understandable. Things ought to be RIGHT.
(22:07:24) (SemiAFK_James): I mean, Tian Xia was written up because I wanted to write a Tian Xian pirate - except there were no details. So my OCD kicked in - and one of my largest ever world dev projects began - just because I couldn't handwave the details aside XD
(22:08:17) (SemiAFK_James): Likewise, I wrote an entire province in Eyropa because I couldn't complete a character in satisfactory fashion until I had
(22:08:26) (SemiAFK_James): It's a curse ;_;
(22:08:56) Abmesh_Gwaelei: I'm the same way. My need for solid groundwork has led to endless hours of painstaking clipping, gluing and writing for every single prototype piece when I'm developing a boardgame idea. Really, a looseleaf sketch would work just as well.
(22:10:33) Abmesh_Gwaelei: An alternate idea: Rather than direct magic via the chestnuts, would the Lady perhaps prefer to work with serendipity? Could she coax the fates so that Abmesh was being held by the Black Gate?
(22:11:21) (SemiAFK_James): Hmm, not in this context. The chestnuts in the backpack would be the easiest way
(22:12:43) Abmesh_Gwaelei: It'll be tough to pull off without stealing the show. The appearance can't be instantaneous, but if he has to "grow" out of the mud, you guys will probably have moved on.
(22:13:08) Abmesh_Gwaelei: This could also wait until you share chestnuts with someone at the hot springs.
(22:13:22) (SemiAFK_James): Quite true. However, there is another timing which could work
(22:15:00) (SemiAFK_James): You seen, to get out of this alive, Cai is going to need to call upon the tattoo of The Emperor's Protection. But that shit has some serious backlash after - http://www.tharshaddin.com/rp/viewtopic.php?t=3124

So once the Black Gate are killed/sent packing, Cai will be out of commission for several minutes at the least
(22:17:13) (SemiAFK_James): What I am expecting to happen is Piao Bai's reveal will distract her, she'll get wounded, call upon the tattoo, then while she is writhing in agony, Abmesh can arise from the chestnuts like the worst kind of sapling =p
(22:17:32) Abmesh_Gwaelei: lololol
(22:17:44) (SemiAFK_James): (the writhing in agony, of course, coming after the end of the action scene)
(22:17:50) Abmesh_Gwaelei: dat face
(22:18:14) Abmesh_Gwaelei: That should work. That gives you guys a couple of posts to explore the transformation.
(22:19:01) (SemiAFK_James): And gives Piao Bai the opportunity to make the (presumably binding in a special kind of way) decision to accept Abmesh as a companion
(22:19:18) (SemiAFK_James): Which will probably leave Cai with a sour face for days, hot springs or no hot springs =p
(22:19:29) Abmesh_Gwaelei: hehehe
(22:20:42) (SemiAFK_James): I think it'll be good. The Cai/Piao Bai stories have, thus far, been the 'welcome to Tian Xia' thread, designed to highlight aspects of the empire in a casual way. It'll be fun to add more Astral Plane twists into that.
(22:21:42) Abmesh_Gwaelei: indeed!
(22:21:55) (SemiAFK_James): The only caveat is that any Astral Plane/Material plane shenanigans have to be consistent with the logic that 'the Seal remains strong enough that the Tianlong dragon shifters cannot breach it and return to the Astral Plane."
(22:22:51) (SemiAFK_James): Travel from the Astral to the Material tends to be one-way
(22:23:33) Abmesh_Gwaelei: I'll use the time before my entrance to brush up on all that lore, but I'm thinking that Abmesh won't be doing any sort of astral travel in that sense. He'll remain amiably oblivious, as always.

If you're up for this, Ree, I'd love to do a parallel thread in which you play the Lady. I'd do my own intro for Abmesh, but I wouldn't feel comfortable writing the Lady, because 1, she's not mine, and 2, I'm like, super duper rusty. A nice road trip with 2 other characters, and a gentle immersion into the Tian Xia lore, seems like the perfect way for me to ease back into this.

(00:56:02) Metarie: howdy boys
(00:56:12) Abmesh_Gwaelei: what's new?
(00:56:26) Metarie: nada, but that's ok ^^
(00:56:38) Abmesh_Gwaelei: no news is good news
(00:56:56) (SemiAFK_James): G'day Ree! I'm guessing you saw the plot discussion post in Shanyi?
(00:57:01) Metarie: yup
(00:57:08) Metarie: I have replies and thoughts ^^
(00:58:10) Abmesh_Gwaelei: excellent
(00:58:21) Metarie: a few notes for both of you, which Joe has probably forgotten and James knows (and I am sure pains him). Everything I write is all in my head, like straw in the Scarecrow, that falls out when something nudges the idea maker
(00:59:23) Abmesh_Gwaelei: I sympathise :)
(00:59:24) (SemiAFK_James): Hahaha
(00:59:26) Metarie: Having said that, it all seems work out with little conflict as James has learned (usually) to ask the right questions to draw out the information that is stuffed in my head.
(00:59:57) (SemiAFK_James): I'm like a bloodhound for details =p
(01:00:11) Metarie: Now that we have the "Ree has no clue, it just is" disclaimer, here's the other notes.
(01:02:56) Metarie: Yup. I'm all floaty, ideation. The details of how are yours :P
(01:03:42) Metarie: I'll paint the picture, but you'll have to figure out why there's an anachronism and how it fits :3
(01:06:31) Metarie: The Astral and the scene are partly drawn from pagan/celtic mythos (the green man sort of thing), a lot of Mizayaki (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle), Natsumi Yujin-cho,and Natsumi Yujin-cho shi
(01:06:37) Abmesh_Gwaelei: with James at the wheel, either he'll go insane, or we'll do fine.
(01:07:32) Metarie: It usually goes like this - James: "Well...<details>, it just doesn't work that way. I'm sorry, but no, I can't do that. <details>"
(01:07:45) Metarie: Ree: "Let's just write it and see what happens."
(01:08:00) (SemiAFK_James): So true XD
(01:08:01) Metarie: James: NO it DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY BECAUSE <details>
(01:08:12) Metarie: Ree: Sure, well, let me start writing and I'll go from there
(01:08:56) Metarie: James: NO IT DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY BECAUSE OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE, NOW I HAVE TO WRITE THAT WHOLE SETTING PIECE DETAIL i'LL BE BACK IN A FEW WEEKS
(01:09:04) Metarie: Ree: ... but
(01:09:17) Abmesh_Gwaelei: Haha! I'm like a hybrid of you two. I'm seriously details-oriented, and a perfectionist, but I'm too spaced out and easily distracted by cool ideas to put my obsessive nature into practice.
(01:09:36) Abmesh_Gwaelei: So I'm basically my own worst enemy
(01:10:05) (SemiAFK_James): Whereas I let other people have the ideas, then I fill in the plot holes =p
(01:10:15) (SemiAFK_James): WITH LOTS OF GLORIOUS DETAIL
(01:10:23) Abmesh_Gwaelei: hehe
(01:10:28) Metarie: Actually, what you said about you describes me. I can be retentive about things and pedantically mundane with how a room is laid out
(01:10:40) Metarie: I end up drawing diagrams >.>
(01:11:13) Metarie: "No, see, the little mossy hillock thing would be there and...<details>"
(01:11:20) Metarie: so yeah.
(01:11:22) Metarie: ANYWAY
(01:11:43) Abmesh_Gwaelei: 8)
(01:12:12) Metarie: My Gwabmesh mention was an homage :) AND the three heads thing is inspired by these guys https://www.google.com/search?q=three+ ... 93&bih=514 The Kashira
(01:12:27) Metarie: speaking of ideas
(01:12:57) Metarie: Since Gwab is also a toad, I suggest that Cai will get another line art drawing on her other arm of a toad
(01:13:50) Abmesh_Gwaelei: So Abmesh would have to be bound to Cai in order to travel from the Lady's court and meet them?
(01:14:14) (SemiAFK_James): No
(01:14:18) (SemiAFK_James): Not happening.
(01:14:23) Metarie: And, he can appear at the hot springs, as a toad, chillin on a rock. Originating from a chestnut that falls out of the bag in between them. He can hang with Piao Bai
(01:14:30) Metarie: see? there it is lol
(01:14:45) Abmesh_Gwaelei: lol
(01:14:53) Metarie: ok scratch that part
(01:15:04) Metarie: keep the part about the chestnut and chillin' on the rock
(01:15:10) (SemiAFK_James): It makes a lot more sense for the gift to be between the Lady and Piao Bai, as they were the ones with a strong narrative connection
(01:15:44) Metarie: But Piao Bai is of the astral, so for the connection to the physical
(01:15:55) Abmesh_Gwaelei: yeah, I was thinking Abmesh falls asleep under a chestnut tree and enters the Lady's court, where he gets offered the chance to accompany Piao
(01:15:59) (SemiAFK_James): As for Cai, she has learned her lesson: she is not going to be linking herself to any other Astral entity ever
(01:16:27) Metarie: So, does Gwabmesh live in the Chestnut like it's a pokeball
(01:16:27) (SemiAFK_James): Unless the Emperor offers, which only ever happens in the nice dreams
(01:16:33) Metarie: "I choose you, Gwabmesh!"
(01:16:38) Metarie: hahaha
(01:16:40) Abmesh_Gwaelei: the chestnuts work as an anchor for a dream teleportation
(01:16:42) Abmesh_Gwaelei: lol
(01:16:47) Metarie: Cai has naughty dreams about the Emperor
(01:17:02) Abmesh_Gwaelei: brb, diaper
(01:17:11) (SemiAFK_James): Not that she'd ever admit to =p
(01:18:01) Metarie: She should have an uncomfortable dream (nightmare) about Piao Bai where the Emperor and he morph in her dream as she is waking and Piao Bai is calling her name
(01:18:06) Metarie: That would be hysterical
(01:18:16) Metarie: Oh Cai!
(01:18:19) Metarie: Oh Emperor
(01:18:20) (SemiAFK_James): That'll be down the track
(01:18:28) (SemiAFK_James): But not any time soon
(01:18:29) Metarie: Cai! (Insert Piao Bai)
(01:18:33) Metarie: AIGH!
(01:18:37) Metarie: hahaaaaaa
(01:18:45) Metarie: right. Gwabmesh. Yes. Happy to have him join.
(01:18:49) (SemiAFK_James): She still thinks of Piao Bai as a more annoying cat
(01:19:22) (SemiAFK_James): Because at least cats have the decency to not be telepathic
(01:19:30) Metarie: Chestnut is a gift. It'll be a necklace gift Piao Bai. Drops it in hot spring, poof Gwabmesh
(01:20:07) Metarie: And Piao Bai will be treated to the final image and be all uncomfortable around Cai, covering himself up and stuff
(01:20:28) (SemiAFK_James): LOL

(10:15:59) (SemiAFK_James): I think it makes more sense that the magic stays in place, forcing Piao Bai to try and escape/hide through physical means.

Because he is green when it comes to that stuff, he gets bagged. In an abortive attempt to break through the magic, he turns human instead

NB: What I describe in my last post, with the first part of the seizure, accounts for about 5-7 minutes of the full 15-odd minute seizure Cai is enduring

What do you think about Piao Bai helping her recover quicker by taking on some of the backlash? Given their link this could be feasible.

I'd rather not, because that would
a) largely invalidate the character's core weaknesses, and
b) set the kind of precedent I'm not comfortable with: you know the trope - that 'Super powerful character has these weaknesses but it's okay because they've got a free pass to mitigate those weaknesses' scenario we occasionally see in new character applications.

If anything, it'd make more sense for Piao Bai to have to learn how to deal with the backlash which will flow along their link: for a pampered dragon prince, I imagine what is coming through the link right now could prove rather distressing =p

While Cai is trying to contain everything within herself, the link is still a very new thing and she doesn't really know how it works, so stopping Piao Bai from receiving any of the backlash will be beyond her abilities at this early stage.

Some of the sensations filtering through will likely be various combinations of pain/agony/embarrassment (for being seen in this state) mixed with grim determination to endure/clinging to her sense of duty to the Emperor like a mental shield (A 'Lay back and think of the Emperor' kind of thing).

Mental note that I need to update my current post to a time skip

--------

(14:36:52) Cai: I have a feeling that, as the current conversation between Piao Bai and Cai dries up, it will be time for a fast forward
(14:41:10) Long_Piao_Bai: yeah. Probably could anyway
(14:41:40) Long_Piao_Bai: Lot of tromping through woods. Internal monologues about human body parts. yeah. fast forward :P
(14:42:07) Cai: Cool. I'll do that with my next post
(14:42:28) Long_Piao_Bai: I think I am going to take some NyQuil and watch the telly before I pass out
(14:42:41) Cai: Cool. It's your post next, then we'll time skip
(14:43:01) Cai: Unless you want me to change this post to a time skip
(14:43:55) Long_Piao_Bai: Go ahead.
(14:44:24) Long_Piao_Bai: I'll volunteer to describe the layout of the hot springs spa
(14:44:33) Cai: Awesome!
(14:44:36) Long_Piao_Bai: Unless you just really want to :)

If I'm reading things right here, the glade is outside time, so Abmesh is, for all intents and purposes, there at the same time as Cai and Piao? If Abmesh were to meet and converse with them, would any developments/friendship etc resulting from the exchange be locked in our subconscious minds, for later revelation when we eventually meet in person?

Notes from chat.

I'm thinking it would be interesting/hilarious if Piao Bai remembers Abmesh from the Grove meeting, but still has to convince Cai that it's a good idea to bring the overly circumlocutious head along with them, given how suspicious of the Grove meeting Cai was (and still is, to an extent).

---
(08:30:34) Cai: Just reading through the glade segment of the RP to better answer your question.
My first reaction, pre-read, based on Cai's personality would be 'there'd be no sense of pre-existing camaraderie from the glade meeting' - she was suspicious of the entire event, and only Piao Bai's positivity towards the entire encounter has assuaged her suspicions in that regards. But I'll let you know shortly if that changes post-read

From what I'm reading, only Piao Bai was paying attention to anything outside of the conversation with the Lady of the Grove. Cai might have seen Abmesh, but thought nothing of it. But that's not too relevant as Abmesh' vector of entry into the thread is Piao Bai, who likely will remember him - this post certainly suggests 'Gwabmesh' made enough of an impact - http://www.tharshaddin.com/rp/viewtopic ... 531#p41042

(08:53:32) Cai: On a related note, it's getting pretty close to a point where Abmesh can make his entry into the main thread I think. We've reached the hot springs, Ree's next post will likely give a good description of the location, and my next post will likely be a combination of Cai's recovery post/npc interactions. Because I'm a pedant, and ABC posting order is easy to remember, I'm thinking that whenever you are ready to jump in, you'd be posting after Ree/Long Piao Bai
(08:54:15) Cai: As to when you want to jump in, that is largely up to you :)
(08:55:22) Abmesh_Gwaelei: Not sure I'll be able to keep up with the main thread yet. My current posting speed will likely continue for the next couple of months, so it's better keeping Abmesh as a sort of aside for Ree.
(08:55:49) Abmesh_Gwaelei: I'm all moved into the new flat March 20th, then a few days sorting shit out there, and I ought to be in better shape.
(08:56:39) Cai: No problem. Given how we planned to make your entry a matter of random happenstance to begin with, it will be easy to contrive that entry under pretty much any narrative circumstance
(08:57:06) Abmesh_Gwaelei: yeah, it'll be fun just winging that bit, I think.
(08:57:17) Cai: Yep =p
(08:58:10) Cai: There is no narrative circumstance that cannot be made that little weirder by the sudden appearance of a talking head
(09:00:20) Abmesh_Gwaelei: classic ;)

Seriously. Apologies for the delay. Piao Bai takes a little more thought to write than my other characters and I've now coming on a month of respiratory/sinus infection. Hate to delay and leave you hanging.

They've given me a codeine based cough syrup. Makes me pass out AND have horrid sleep.
Here's to hoping the new round of antibiotics kick this shit! booyah and all that.
A story is like a tapestry; it is never finished until the final thread is sewn.
