Valz sat up as Lachtna approached him. Before Valz could do anything Lachtna reached out and touched Valz's shoulder: a moment of disorientation followed. Valz felt cold, hot, nauseous, and back to normal all within the span of half a second. Valz didn't know what to think before he realized that his nose was no longer hurting. Reaching up Valz touched his nose without pain.

Valz had been around the block a number of times and was no stranger to magic. Not every land had as odd a view of magic as Marn. Valz looked at Lachtna,

"We must speak of this later." Valz speaking was punctuated by Mol's fist hammering into a man's face, whom she had pinned up against a wall. Valz stared at Lachtna, stood up, and started approaching Mol.

Lachtna breathed in slowly through his nose and out through his mouth as he had taught himself to do shortly after he had begun experimenting with his abilities. It helped the weakness fade more quickly, and left him with less of a chance of suffering a massive headache from the experience. So, he did it however great or small the healing was, just in case.

We must speak of this later. The words rang in Lachtna's head, and he was uncertain if they had an ominous intonation or not.

His fingers flexed around the hilt of his forgotten sword as he watched the other two and the fight they had created with their care, a fight he entirely agreed with, a rare occasion in his life.

Mol watched the man stumble back. He was going to try to leave. She was inclined to let him. But what were the ramifications? Who was he likely to answer to? Who did Sirah answer to? This was apparently a more significant organization than it had first seemed. Were they going to end up on the wrong end of some kind of organized crime racket?

"Wait a minute." Mol said stopping him with a foot. "You need to answer some questions."

"Fat chance of that." The man splurted. He was holding his face and bleeding freely from the nose.

Valz approached the man, Grendal or Morti, Valz wasn't sure who was whom, that Mol was restraining with her boot. Blood flowed down the man's face in a mirror image of Valz's, although the blood on the new man's face was free flowing whereas the Valz's blood was dry and sticky. He didn't have time to deal with Lachtna's strange actions, trusting the man to be on their side.

Valz went shoulder to shoulder with Mol, both of them looming over the bloodied man. "You are going to answer her questions, or you are going to answer to me", Valz said with obvious malice as he loosened his belt knife.

The left corner of Mol's mouth twitched upward. The man looked as if he were going to try to scramble away so she kicked him in the ribs.

"Who do you work for?" She spouted. "What's he want with a bunch of ragged kids?"

"It's all profit." The man sputtered. "Don't matter where it comes from."

"That is only half the question...who do you work for?" Valz demanded of the prostrate man. keMol had the whole "boot to the ribs" thing pretty well under control so he didn't think it was necessary to step into her domain.

Glancing over his shoulder to make sure Sirah was still down Valz realized that Lachtna was gone. He nudged her shoulder to alert her before heading back to Sirah in order to tie him up.

Mol nodded to Valz wordlessly. They hadn't known each other long but they both seemed to know how this sort of thing could go down.

"Grendel Malgoza." The man sputtered. "You'll be sorry you heard his name today. Payback's a bitch."

Mol refrained from kicking him again just yet. "If this guy Malgoza is so big how come I've never heard of him?"

Valz was still concerned about Lachtna's whearabouts, and even more concerned about how the man left without him noticing. He realized that Lachtna must have been scared after healing him; afterall Marn was not a forgiving city. Wherever he went was of no immediate concern to Valz.

With half an ear cocked towards Mol's "talk" with the man on the ground Valz stood over Sirah. The man was on the ground in the fetal position cradling his shattered arm and crying soundlessly. Stripping the sheets off the bed Valz forced Sirah's arms behind his back and bound them together, then repeated the process with his feet. The movement brought a series of cries from Sirah which were promptly cut off by Valz shoving a shirt into his mouth.

Mol was less benevolently disposed toward Lachtna's departure. What if he'd gone to fetch the guard? The whole lot of them could be tossed into the brig.

Glowering she nudged a toe into the man on the ground being certain to hit a bruised spot.

"I should stomp your face in." She growled. "But I'd like you to be capable of telling Mr. Malgoza that that's what I'm gonna do to him if he shows his face around here. I'm going to take care of these kids. You and Sirah and the rest of your cronies are not welcome. Is that clear?"

She kicked him again for emphasis. The man yowled painfully.

"You're going to tell Malgoza that right?" She reiterated.

"Alright! I'll tell him!" The man sputtered. "Just stop..."

She grunted with a nod. "Go on then." She nudged him with her boot.

The man scrambled slowly to his feet and then scurried away with as much speed as he could muster in the crumpled state Mol had left him in.

She watched him leave with a sinking dread in her stomach. Had she really said she was going to take care of these kids? What did she know about raising kids? This was crazy. She didn't have time for this!

Valz stood by impassively with arms folded across his chest while Mol basically took ownership of the children. He sent daggers with his eyes as the thug scurried off to report back to Malgoza.

"Well, I can't say I wasn't thinking the same thing," Valz told Mol, "and as I see it we have two problems."

Valz paused to collect his thoughts, "First, that little thug is gonna run and tell his boss, who is going to have some serious issues with us."

Glancing down at Sirah, "What do we do with him?"

"Then we deal with his boss when we have to. As for that one." She glared at Sirah. She couldn't say what she wanted to say because she could already see little eyes peering in through the windows and peeking around doorways.

"Maybe we should hold onto him for now. He might be able to tell us more about this Malgoza fellow and it wouldn't hurt to be better prepared if he does show up. In the meantime there is more work to be done than you or I have time to do. I'm supposed to be back on the job..." She looked distinctly confused about how she was going to resolve these two obligations.

"You are right about keeping him as a source of information." Valz said. "As much as I would like to slit his throat here, I'm not too keen on cold blooded murder." Valz thought for a moment...

"I'll find an appropriate place to keep him locked up until he is in the mood to answer some questions. I think you should go back to work. Whatever these gangsters want to do probably wont happen until after dark and after they've fortified themselves with some liquid courage."

He knew that most people like this Malgoza weren't used to having their authority questioned, and really weren't used to women beating his hired muscle to a bloody pulp.

"Maybe you can come back this evening after I've had some time to think about what to do? Plus, I'm going to have to find some food for these kids." Valz said, knowing there must be some kind of larder or pantry.

"Thank you for having a clear head." Mol said with a sigh. She cast her eyes downward. "And this place is a real mess. Are you certain you'll be all right here? I can try to get my hands on some more supplies before I come back. This is a tall order for you and me both. I wish I didn't have to get to the warehouses just now."

"Yeah, I'll be fine" Valz said, "whatever is going to happen isn't going to happen before sundown."

Valz looked around him at the condition of the building. The windows were warped and twisted in their frames and were probably incapable of opening; which was a good thing in Valz's mind, one less entry point. Valz made a quick mental checklist of things that needed to be done and was quickly overwhelmed.

"Any supplies we need to fix this place up are going to be too heavy and too expensive for you to just aquire from a worksite...for now." Valz took another look around. "I don't know anything about this guy, Malgoza, or his goons. Maybe one of the older kids knows about him. In any case we should probably at least gather them together and see how many there are and what they need. Right?"

"That sounds like a reasonable plan Valz. You see to that while I get back to work and when I return I'll see if there is anything at all I could bring. I will try to get back before sundown. If I can't, it is ok if you think you need to move these kids out of here."
