The Wolf and the Woman
The Wolf and the Woman
The summer heat did nothing to help Shade's already cross mood as he stomped down the dusty road. He wasn't sure what he'd done wrong this time or maybe they thought this was some sort of twisted reward for his 'good behavior' but whatever they were doing, he was seriously hating them for it. So what did he do? He was forced to walk the entire way to Shim in a pointless patrol.
At least they hadn't ordered him to go in his wolf form, even they weren't that cruel. What seemed hot to him now would likely kill him as a wolf, the shaggy black fur doing nothing but lure in the heat. He grimaced and shouldered his bag a little higher, chewing on his lip in thought. At least it wasn't rainy or whatnot.
"This is ridiculous." Shade complained loudly despite nobody being around, walking easily on the thick grass near the road. One of his wolf things, doesn't like walking on the road. "Why do I have to check on Shim and why can't I have a horse? I didn't even do anything wrong! Dammit, if this is their way of being funny then I'll show them how jolly I am when I get back."
Too far in his own self pity, Shade barely noticed his straying from the path until his foot lodged itself into a rabbits burrow and his ankle twisted sharp. He howled in pain and alarm as he staggered into the grass clutching at his leg. The pain made his body lock up, lips curling in a tight snarl as he forced himself to breath through his teeth.
He knew it wasn't broken. Being a shifter made him more than aware how broken bones felt but the mere movement of it cause him to hiss in agony. Slowly he gently brought his foot back and out of the hole, whining a bit as he slowly brought his leg closer to him. Still twisted the right way round. Points for his luck and ten more for his stupidity.
Realizing there was no sticks nearby to use for a crutch nor anybody within yelling distance, Shade mentally cursed at himself as he began to strip down, wincing at the purple splotches on his ankle and whining more when he realized how much this was going to hurt and dammit did it ever. The wounded ankle twisted farther as it shifted into a wolf's leg, a sharp wail running from his jaws before he was able to down the sound by biting into the grass. After taking a bit to rest, he slowly climbed to his feet and gathered his clothes, carefully hopping with three legs onto the road then again towards Shim.

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
It had been a quiet day, not many disturbances and no house calls causing Lorelei to be a bit bored. "I know I put that herb somewhere in here..." A quiet voice grumbled as a delicate hand shifted through a bundle of dried herbs. Carefully she smelled each one and gently let her fingers stray over the leaves to get an idea of what she was holding. The redheaded woman had been sorting herbs and making a few bundles for a special tea that would help some of the villagers allergies that were being stirred up by the summer heat and breezes.
After a few moments she gave a frustrated grumble before standing and removing the heavy cloak that normally obscured her tiny figure. Normally she wouldn't ever have her cloak hanging up with the chance of a patient bursting in through the doors but really in this heat she almost didn't care. "Damned heat." She grumbled once more as she made her way to a small table off to the side that held a glass of a lightly flavored tea. Well she would have made it there anyways had she not stumbled over the small stool that had been moved by a childs quick haste to escape the small house and get away from the 'monster lady' as she had been called after she had cleaned and wrapped up a rather nasty scrape.
She cursed and rubbed at her shin before finishing her short journey to her drink and plopped her body into a simple worn out chair. Sometimes she wished that she had more to do even though she didn't really wish harm to anyone. It just got lonely on occasion since her aunt passed a few years ago. She sipped her tea carefully and sniffed slightly her nose slightly bothered by the strong smell of herbs that permeated the air from her sorting.

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
The pain in his leg made his traveling that much slower, much to his growing frustration and shortening temper. He snapped irritably at a small flower that brushed innocently against his nose, tearing the small plant out with a fierce growl as he hobbled onward. Few people passed him but quickly gave him a wide berth, frightened by his wolf appearance and growling breath. It took nearly half an hour before he reached the town edge and there he stopped to raise his nose.
He could smell children playing not far away, a baking shop, and lunch cooking in the kitchens. Men laughed and bantered, working away at their jobs or bartering for goods. A few horses, dogs and cats mixed their scents among the roads much as he expected. Still, he raised his nose and sniffed heavily at the wind until he finally caught the scent of medicine herbs.
Wagging his tail a little in relief, he hopped wearily towards what he assumed was the backdoor. He doubted he'd be treated seeing how he was currently as a wolf but the mere thought of changing again made him stomach turn. So, giving what little hope he had he slowly reached a paw out and scratched at the door, whining pitifully as he could in an attempt to get some sympathy.

Lorelei had just been about to stand and return to work when her ears picked up the whimper at her door. Very careful so as to avoid the stool she moved to lift her cloak from where it hung and clasped it around her neck and pulled the hood up over her face. Once she had finished that she opened the door. "Is someone there?"she asked.
She stuck out her hand slightly as if trying to feel for someone. Though it did t take long for the smell of dog to reach her nose making it crinkle slightly. "Or should I say something." She added to her early statement as she stepped back letting whatever was there enter her small yet homey house.
While canines were on the bottom of her favorites list she didn't have the heart to turn the animal away if it was in pain. She had to blame her healer nature for that little bit of a personality quirk

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
At first, Shade wasn't really sure what she was doing. Her hands were waving about in front of her like she couldn't see that his head came to her waist, pausing after a moment as she realized that he was in fact not a person at the moment. Confused but pleased when she allowed him entrance, he hopped carefully into the small home and dropped his clothes underneath a chair and out of the way.
Slowly turning in a circle he gave her a friendly bark, trying to show her he wasn't a mindless killer wolf only to pause again as he tried to peer up into her face. Unsure, he stared at her for a long moment only to bark again and hop a bit away from her, laying down in the corner of the room with a heavy sigh.
Pained leg or not, the cool break from the sun's rays was welcomed as he simply waited for instructions from the petite woman. This was her house after all and with his luck he'd run into some sort of expensive potion she'd stewed up for twenty years or something. He grunted a bit, head lowering to his paws while he brooded on how he was getting home.

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
Lorelei flinched this first bark before carefully listening to where his claws echoed as he walked. She closed the door and followed where the sound had gone. "Hey there little guy or girl... Whatever you are." She said in a soothing voice she used on most animals. "What brings you here?" She carefully pushed back her hood again and wiped her face with the back of her hand removing some of the sweat that had started up. She figured a dog wouldn't mind the awful sight of her face.
She kneeled once she made her way I front of him and carefully reached out feeling for his body. Her pale hand gently touched his shoulder and she couldn't help but smile at the softness. "I bet you are pretty." She said absentmindedly as she carefully petted him letting the animal know she was no threat.
After a few moments she moved her hands more over his body checking for injuries pausing when she brushed her hand against his collar before moving to run her fingers softly down his legs. It took her a moment but the last one she felt she frowned at. "You have something wrong with this one don't you." She mumbled halfway to herself.

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
Shade blinked when her face came into view, his ears pricking in surprise as he examined the milky eyes and scarred face. Well, apparently she was blind. This could end rather badly rather fast. Still, he remained still and quiet as she reached out to him and patted him, letting out a series of low huffs in laughter when she called him pretty. Still he wagged his tell and gave the side of her face a quick lick to show he found her amusing.
When her hands touched his collar he paused, hoping she didn't feel the small spikes pointed readily at his throat. However when she touched his wounded leg he let out a loud whine and jerked away as a reflex. He grumbled a bit at her, complaining with a series of various grunts and barks before settling back down with his head resting near her feet.
She seemed goodnatured and her tone was gentle but still. He eyed her warily as he kept watch of whatever she was going to pick up. His knowledge of herbs was limited but he knew the area well enough to know which was poisonous and which could heal him. For once, he was glad he carried that heavy ass book around with him if only for reading material. Maybe it would come in handy.

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
Lorelei let out a soft squeak of surprise as Shade licked her cheek. She couldn't help but laugh softly at his antics before returning to being serious. Her brow furrowed slightly as she realized that yes his foot was bothering him.
"I'm gonna have to feel around some."she said soothingly as her voice lowered slightly. Very carefully she felt of his ankle and the muscles around it before frowning. "You got your self into quite a mess here princess."
She stood and walked over to her table and carefully picked up her pitcher and poured water into a pot over a small fire that was situated in the corner of the house to brew her teas, cursing only once as her arm brushed up against something hot. She then bussied her self with fetching a few herbs that would help reduce swelling and stop some of the pain.
Once the water was hot she carefully placed the herbs inside it. "This should get you to start feeling better." She knew that the dog wouldn't understand her but she felt like it would help keep the animal calm. Not to long later she fetched a ladle and a bowl and filled it with the medical tea. Carefully she set it down in front of the dog. "Here you go."

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
Shade huffed at the 'princess' but realizing there wasn't a way for him to tell her he was a male, simply let it pass. He really didn't want to sit on her and transforming back wasn't something he was fond of doing either. So, he simply grumbled and watched as she bumbled about what he presumed was the kitchen. Before long she returned to him with a bowl of strong scented tea.
He sniffed at it, eyes narrowing as he picked out the herbs and tried to remember exactly which ones were good for him. Sighing he slowly began to lap at the liquid, grimacing when it touched his tongue. Still, he remembered his manners and barked a thanks before lapping again at it.
Question was, what was he going to do now? He couldn't walk back to Marn with this leg or in this form. Walk too close to a farm and farmers wouldn't think twice about shooting him while the paths away from the main road weren't ideal for walking on a bad foot. He growled in frustration as paused in his drinking to glare at his foot.
Still, maybe if he behaved he could hide here until a guard came to investigate why he hadn't come back. Or until his leg actually healed a little. It wasn't like she knew he was a shifter and by the looks she just thought he was a dog. He could work with this. So he gave out a cheery bark and lapped up the last of his tea, his heavy tail thumping loudly off the ground.

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
Lorelei chuckled slightly at the bark that echoed slightly in the small house before lightly patting him on the head. "Now do you have a home?" She asked absentmindedly. She then moved and ladled out another bowl of the stew that sat to the side. "I cant spare much but this should fill your belly some and get that taste out of your mouth." Carefully she placed it down near Shade before turning to busy herself. Atleast she would have had she not once again stumbled over that damned stool.
She stumbled and let out a yelp as her hip collided with the sharp edge of her table. "Damn it all." She grumbled cringing as she heard a cup roll off the table and hit the ground rolling off to a corner of the room. Normally the blind woman had a slightly more graceful demeanor but today it seemed like she was lacking it slightly. "Well Princess atleast I can make you feel better." She commented as she rubbed the offended hip and sat down for a moment.

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
Shade blinked when a bowl of stew appeared under his nose, the meal making his stomach growl greedily. He opened his jaw, ready to eat when the clattering and curse caught his attention. Startled he watched the cup roll away with a frown before turning his attention to the small woman rubbing at her hip. He huffed a scolding at her before slowly getting to his feet and hopping towards the cup; careful not to knock into the stew.
He wasn't about to let the blind woman fumble around later to find her cup after all. Pained or not, he ought to be a bit handy. So with a few grunts and limps he made his way to the cup, growling lightly as he gently took it between his teeth and brought it back to her. Taking a seat in front of her he gently placed his large head on her lap, holding the cup gently between his teeth as he waited for her to take it from him.
As his nose caught her scent, he found his tail thumping on the ground again while the smell of herbs and stew wafted pleasantly into his nose. It wasn't long before he simply settled, breathing softly into her lap as his eyes closed and a pleased growl escaped his chest. In the back of his mind he was reminded of the food still sitting ready for him but he pushed that away. He'd eat it in a minute. Right now, he had a cup in his mouth.

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
Lorelei listened carefully as she heard Shade start to move and frowned at his pained noises. "What are y- Oh!" She smiled as she felt his head rest in her lap. "Well thank you." She carefully took the cup and put it on the table before running her fingers over his fur scratching lightly behind his ear and just running her fingers through the soft strands.
"For a dog you aren't so bad." She commented as she affectionately petted him. Although her hands did still slightly when they came in contact with the collar. Her brow furrowed and her fingers danced lightly over the metal spikes. "Your master must not be very nice." She said rather unhappily before she returned to petting him.
Normally the blind woman wasn't quite this friendly with dogs but this one... Well he was different. That and being kinda lonely must have something to do with it. While normally she had a slightly regular flow of people in and out the past week it had been slow and almost painfully quiet. Not for the first time did the woman wish for companionship of some kind.

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
Shade barked and let his tail thump readily on the ground, shoving his nose under her chin snuffling it loud as he made like he was going to lick her. He wouldn't of course, he had more manners then that. Still he liked her little smile as he gave her another pleasant bark and slowly climbed back to his feet and towards the stew.
Distantly he wondered what the poor girl would do if he shape changed back into his human form. Probably freak. If not for the fact that he was a shifter, then because a random naked man would be standing in her house. He grunted in amusement at the thought as he began to scarf down his food.
Oh well, he'd cross that bridge when it came there.

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
Lorelei laughed at the dogs antics before she listened to his foot falls move back towards the bowl. Her sightless eyes turned towards the larger window of the house as she heard the sound of distant thunder. "Sounds like a small summer storm." She commented lightly before moving to close the shutters on the few windows in the house.
She started to hum softly as she carefully moved around the house carefully moving things back in the right place. She carefully moved her chairs back under the table but paused as her foot pushed against a small pile of fabric. "What's this..." She mumbled as she bent down to pick them up. "Clothes...?"

Re: The Wolf and the Woman
Shade grimaced when he realized she had found his things. No doubt confused now he cursed himself for not hiding them better. Though to be fair he hadn't expected her to really go looking either. Sighing he swallowed the last of his meal before trudging over to her and seizing the clothes in his jaws, careful to avoid her hands as he pulled the fabrics away.
Turning he hopped to the other side of the room, pausing only a moment before growling lowly. With some luck she wouldn't panic and throw things at him before he could put on his pants. Worse was he would limp/hop/hobble with medicine numbing his pain as he ran naked back into the trees. Not the most manly of exits but he wasn't about to get beaten by a piping hot kettle either. Deciding on his escape route he bowed his head and braced his legs, clenching his clothes tight in his jaws in order to muffle the whimpers and yells.
The transformation to human took longer much to his pains, groaning roughly into the leather as bones twisted and his flesh stretched over moving muscle. For a moment he was completely naked of hair and clothes as his fur fell off and vanished only to have his human hair growing back in itchy waves. The five minutes it took to transform felt like an hour, his ankle helping even less with the matter.
"Don't scream." He wheezed, shuddering when the last of his bones popped back into place save for his still swollen ankle. He kept his hands gripped on his clothes as he watched her face. "My name is Shade, I'm a shifter."
