Ina Aedis

Post by Ina Aedis » Sun Aug 03, 2014 3:05 am

Player Name: Nikki

Name: Ina Aedis

Age:19

Race: Human (unknowingly part Fae)

Physical Description:
A girl with a bit of muscle on her, Ina stands at 5 ft 6, and is curvy with good muscle tone. Her head of straight and shiny dark red hair perfectly compliments her snowy blue eyes, and she seems to have an indescribable element to her. Something eye catching about her looks that says exceptionally pretty, but if you focused on it you couldn't quite put your finger on why.

Possessions:
Aside from the regular things she would own, Ina has a very special bow made from the trunk of an Ash tree that she grew up next to. It is beautifully crafted, and made custom for her height and pull strength which to say is short-ish, and strong.
She rides a younger speckled grey mare that seems enamored of her.

Powers or Strengths:

Bow Shooting: Ever since Ina can remember, she’s always been good with a bow. She had a knack for it even before her mother started teaching her to hunt for the pot.

Lengthened Life: Though Ina doesn't know it yet, her lifespan has been lengthened considerably due to the Fae magic in her blood.

Quickened Reflexes: Though not necessarily perfect, Ina has very, very good reflexes. She seems to be able to see something coming at her out of the corner of her eye, or spot actions and just react to them rather than thinking through how she should respond.

Animal Affinity: It seems that Ina has an innate ability to befriend any animal that she comes into contact with. Once when she was younger she accidentally went onto someone else’s property. Their attack dog who was known for being particularly vicious saw Ina and trotted up to her, licked her face, and acted as guard for her until the owners found Ina and returned her to her parents.

Weaknesses:

Naivete: Ina is very naive. She easily believes in the inherent good nature in all things, and has not ever experienced anything differently.

The Family Bloodline:
Ina has no clue of her family’s background. She is entirely unaware of the Fae in her blood, or the fact that she got it from her father, who is also unaware of any magic in the family.

Nightmares:
Ina is plagued with nightmares she doesn't understand. This is a side effect of the Fae blood within her attempting to send her visions but not being strong enough or developed enough yet to do so with any sort of clarity. So Ina’s mind turns them into terrible streams of nightmares.

Headstrong:
What Ina believes she knows about the world is how it is, and she’ll be damned before she believes anything else.

History:

Ina’s great grandfather Fien was a full fledged Fae and seduced her great grandmother Llisha, tricking her into thinking he was a wealthy human from Marn fallen in love with a farm girl. Before the half-fae child was born it was discovered that Fien was very much long gone. It seemed a senseless tragedy, a farm-girl being left while with child, at least until the baby was born. Llisha was shunned from the family, ex-communicated, and told to leave. The town was all abuzz with gossip and rumors, but the family hid the actual secret well, deciding to corroborate the rumor that the child was physically disabled in some manner, and the family was ashamed.
Llisha’s brother Shae felt that the responsibility to help take care of the new mother and child fell to him since their father couldn’t bring himself to even look at Llisha anymore and Fien was nowhere to be found. He built a small cottage on a piece of land close to the outskirts of Shim and made it as cozy as he could with what little he earned. He even helped Llisha build a small fishing business, so she could start earning some income on her own to support herself and Ylette, her child.

Ylette grew up hearing about everything that had happened between her mother and the rest of the family, and was taught kindness in the face of adversity and cruelty. Llisha explained that her father was only acting on what he knew and had been taught. That it was more sad that her family, all except Shae that is, lost Ylette than it was that she lost them. Ylette being only half Fae looked a lot like a human and had learned to conceal her powers more out of kindness and the want to spare her mother more grief from the family. The power she couldn't hide afforded her a sort of ethereal beauty about her, and in her twenties she fell in love with a ferryman’s son named Kaijah Aedis. They lived very happily together for a long time having only one child themselves and teaching him the family business of ferrying. It wasn't until Kaijah started to age, and Ylette didn't really seem to age at all, that the family secret came out.
There was some fighting, and much loving that night, but they decided to keep the family secret from their child Shael nick-named Shae after Ylette’s uncle. Ylette decided she needed to go searching for her father. That it was time he answered her questions, and time that she leave before Kaijah’s family began suspecting anything. So they staged an elaborate attack, animal blood and tattered clothing of Ylette’s and all, and Ylette left her family with tears on her face and a heavy heart.

Shael had a fairly normal childhood between Ylette and Kaijah. He was a very lovely boy (that inherited ethereal beauty) and though he was very shy, he was popular with the girls. Unlike all the girls that were fawning over Shael though, Lenae stood out as an adventurous, red-headed tom-boy and they grew up very good friends who ultimately got married and had a particularly beautiful baby girl.
Shael noticed some special tendencies that happened around him while growing up, but he didn't really notice them as “magic”. He just knew he was really good at a few things that took most people years and years of practice. He “lost” his mother, Ylette, to a vicious attack not long after marrying Lenae. Kaijah went to stay with some extended family of theirs. Having lost Lynette took it’s toll on him. He left the cottage to Shale and Lenae after they all found out Lenae was pregnant telling them it was a beautiful place to raise a child, and the ferrying business they had wasn't too far away.

Ina was raised by her parents Shael and Lenae in a small cottage her great uncle Shae built himself. It is just a few miles away from the Ofriyu Mar where the Aedis family has for generations been ferry-men, and fisher-women. Ina herself has no idea about her family’s fall from society, or why her grandparents are never really talked about. The Fae blood in her granted her a poignant beauty that she was all too unaware of.
Ina grew up much like her mother, a dark red-headed tomboy. She loved shooting a bow, and riding horses. As she got older she had heard about guns and such and was curious, but never wanted to ask her parents for one since they were bound to be expensive.
Horseback riding came as natural as breathing to Ina, as did a couple things. She, much like her father, just assumed that it was all part of just being naturally good at things that it took some people years to master. After years of asking and being told she wasn't ready yet, upon Ina’s 19th birthday her father finally consented to allow her to go on a trip by herself into the great city of Marn and look for an apprenticeship. Try as she might, Ina just wasn't interested in fishing or ferrying. She constantly felt like she had a fire in her veins to do SOMETHING else, though for the life of her she couldn't figure out what that might be. Ina grew up being very good at hunting, and foraging, as well as being an excellent bow-shot no matter where she was, even on horseback.

( To explain how the Fae magic specifically effects Ina: The Fae blood in Ina specifically makes her reaction time, and reflexes very fast. As she gets older, and comes more into her own, The fae magic will begin to bloom inside her and begin to affect each of her senses heightening and strengthening them. At her peak, Ina will eventually be able to develop a foretelling of future events. But that won’t happen for quite some time yet. All that Ina has currently, as a magic gift from her Fae blood is lengthened life, quickened reflexes/reaction times, and an affinity with animals, and as a balance to this, Ina’s nightmares will get worse as she gets older, making her suffer from fatigue occasionally when they get really bad. Her quick reflexes are at times TOO quick, and she will react wrongly potentially causing pain or anguish to others, and being a friend to most animals means that they get very attached to her and can attack friends and even family if they dont know them well enough.)

Welcome to Thar, Nikki!

I think the concept for this character works overall; that is, a child of fae heritage whose history is known by the older members of the town of Shim. However, there are a few things I'd like to see addressed.

Looking at the application in terms of balance, Ina is very attractive and far more skilled than other people her age, as you've described. Of course, fae magic is a reasonable explanation for this, and there's no real problem there... but she lacks significant weaknesses to balance these strengths out. Especially as a first character, if you choose to make her very good at most everything compared to an average person, you need to somehow bring her down to the level of a normal person with weaknesses. My suggestion is to try to include some personality weaknesses. Perhaps try to think of things people in real life have to struggle with.

I also didn't see any mention of this anywhere in your application: "The ambient magics coming from the cemetery in Shim also frighten them off. They don't know why, but something about the place repels them." This comes from the wiki entry on fae and it should have some effect on Ina's ancestors if not herself.

You should probably include some indication of her attitude towards magic, as Shim is very strongly Puradyne and she'd have been taught that magic is evil and wrong. How does this affect her view that all things are good? What kind of interests does she have? Are there any things she dislikes or fears?

When you're ready to have your application looked at again, reply to this thread to let me know. If you have any questions, let me know in chat, reply here, or send me a PM. :)
