Discovering Marn

Post by Sky Khaleh » Tue Dec 03, 2013 12:13 am

Sunlight crept over the land, racing across treetops and painting the colors back into the world. In a small clearing in the woods, lying on a bed of leaves is a small bundle of clothing and a ratty brown blanket. The fabric moved, revealing a woman’s face that is round with pixie like features that would most commonly be found on a doll along with snowy hair that obscured the left side of her face. Dirt smudged her skin, and her hair had a few tangles in it, showing that this was not her first morning sleeping on the ground.

All around her the forest was waking up, the birds began to sing their good mornings and the various animals came out of their dens. The young woman opened her eyes, revealing striking blue irises that were the color of a summertime sky devoid of clouds. She sat up and the earth colored blanket fell off of her. She wore a loose grey wool sweater, the sleeves hung past her small hands but that’s how she preferred her clothing. Around her slender neck hung a piece of leather and sitting on the dip between her collar bones is a tiny golden leaf. A yawn escaped her mouth, revealing slightly pointed teeth and a pink tongue. She threw out her arms, and at the same time unfolded two wings. The wings were large, easily giving the woman a twenty foot wingspan and were similar to a peregrine falcon’s wings. They have the same snowy white of her hair underneath with horizontal dark brown stripes on each wing feather that fade into a solid darker brown on the wingtips. On the opposite side of the wings the feathers are dark brown with the outline of each feather in white.

The woman gathered up her blanket, tying it into a sort of knot to make it into a sack. Underneath the blanket had been a bow, made out of polished wood as well as a small quiver filled with wooden arrows fletched with the same feather the woman had growing out of her back. From the ground she picked up a thick deer fur cloak and pulled it on. Her wings made her look like she had an abnormally large hump on her back. She threw the blanket over her shoulder, slung the quiver on over that and added her bow on top of everything for easy access. She pulled a knit beanie over her hair, taking extra care to tuck it all in so no one could see how stark white and odd her hair is.

With a smile on her face she set off towards the smoke that she could make out through the trees. It had been a long journey for the young woman, she had braved many nights alone on the ground. She is hungry though she had managed to feed herself by hunting small animals with her bow and arrows. She felt like she had done quite well to get so far. There had been a few hiccups on the way, one involving a particularly nasty man who owned a barn she had tried to spend the night in. The man found her sleeping in the stale hale that had not been used for a good long while. He prodded her awake with a pitchfork and told her to leave or he would find a better place to stick his weapon if she didn’t. She was lucky she escaped with her life. He was the third person the woman had ever met; he hadn’t been nice like her mother or brother. Her mother warned her of other people, that they were mean and cruel to each other but she hadn’t expected to be almost killed. She would have to be more careful.

As she neared the city she noticed the deep gouges in the earth where it had been beaten down creating what she assumed was the main road into the town. Her legs ached from the long trip, the smell of dirt and leaves was entangled in everything she wore and her face looks brown with all of the soil on it but she never felt so thrilled in her life. As she stepped through the entrance of the city her breath was taken from her lungs. There were people of all different shapes and sizes, tall people, short people, old wrinkly faced people and mothers holding mewling babes. Some people were dressed in fine clothes, bright dies and sparkling jewelry made them stand out. Other people were dirty and wore tattered clothing with muted colors; a couple of them even limped or held their body at awkward angles.

To the right of the young woman is a large beautiful building and to the left is a pile of scraps, she can’t make out what exactly made up the pile. She struggled to take it all in, walking down the street deeper into the city. Several people bumped into her, or rather shoved her out of their way. Some of the town’s people gave her looks that made her feel like she should have never stepped into the town but others ignored her all together, looking through her as if she wasn’t even there.

Farther down the street there were more people, along with the tantalizing smell of cooking food. Her mouth watered, the last thing that graced her tongue was a skinny squirrel she cooked over her fire yesterday. Her feet carried her towards the smells, which were off to her left in a rather crowded area. She was so distracted by the tantalizing smell she hadn’t noticed the disgusted glares and whispers aimed her way. Her thick cloak bulged over her back where her wings were, she was covered in leaves and dirt making her look like a hunch back street rat. The Marnians did not take kindly to outsiders, let alone street rats that had a reputation for stealing the wares being sold from the small shops set up downtown.

As she approached the door that the smell was coming from someone shoved her to the ground. A rather large burly man stood in front of her, his gigantic arms were crossed and he wore an ugly smirk on his face. Fear made her heart hammer in her fragile chest, this man could crush her and he looked like he just might. She should have never left the cottage; there were so many people here and many shops. She pushed herself up, bolting in the opposite direction as tears began to flow down her dirty cheeks leaving lines of pale skin in their wake. She could hear her mother’s voice in her head, playing over and over.

“My sweet Sky, there are people out there who will not accept you. They aren’t used to seeing anyone like you, you belong here with me.” Her mother’s voice just kept echoing in her head.

Sky ran as fast as she could, not knowing where she was going. Tears blurred her vision; she bumped into people, not even slowing down to apologize. The town’s people gawked at her, all staring at her as she winded through streets. She finally slowed down when she found a quiet secluded wall to hide behind. She let out a sob as she slid down the rough stone; she curled up with her knees to her chest and her head on her knees. Why had she come here? Tears still fell down her pale, doll like face and left wet patches in her tanned pants. The hood of her cloak had fallen away, and her snow white tangled hair lay over her face. Silent sobs racked her small body.

Ryoko had wanted to sleep in today but wasn't able to due to her new job. Stretching out of her queen size bed Ryoko let out a small but cute yawn. Looking back at her bed all she wanted to do was get back in it and sleep half he day. If it wasn't for he party she had last night, for her gaining the District Magistrate position she would have no problem waking up. Letting out a sigh, she walked over to her desk and began to brush her hair. After Brushing her hair she walked over to her dresser. It was light brown with a gold edging around the handles. Opening the top one Ryoko grabbed her normal clothing.

Ryoko's favorite dress is a light blue with a dark blue outline at the top near her chest. It is a strapless dress that goes almost down to her knees. Around her waist is a small black belt her mother gave her. She doesn’t need the belt but likes wearing it as it reminds her of her mother. The lower half of the dress has two layers to it. The top layer is a light blue but darker than the second and also goes down more. The second layer is a whitish blue the goes half way down to her knees.

After getting ready she walked to the main door. She did like how her room was on the first floor. It made it a lot easier for her to leave without interrupting her mother and father in the morning. As walked out side Ryoko thought about what she should do on her first day. After spending a few minutes on this she decided she would take a look at the Residential area and see how everyone is doing. Until now she was to deep in thought to realize how nice it was out. There was a gentle breeze blowing from the west.

As she walked to the residential area she noticed that most of the town was already but. The streets where crowed with people going to and from shops. Most of the time she was able to walk without people bumping into her, because of her small size, but today was different. By the time she arrived at Residential District she bumped into four different people. Standing in the middle of the street Ryoko looked around and smile as she saw most people enjoying there day. Her smile faded away when she saw a girl run past her with tears in her eyes. After running past her Ryoko started to fellow her until she stopped at a wall.

Breathing heavily after running after her, Ryoko raised her right hand as she took a deep breath. Looking into her blue eyes Ryoko asked in a soothing voice, "Are you all right and what happen?" As she waited for her to respond to her question Ryoko walked a little closer and but her left hand on her shoulder. As she kept looking into her eyes Ryoko smiled as patted her on her right shoulder.

Drayel stood silent, his lips curling down in a scowl as he eyed the standing people with a wary eye. He wasn't on duty as much as he he was trying to get away from work. Yet, here he stood like a solider as he kept his eyes on the mass of people around him. It wasn't hard, most people didn't dare to shove around a man of his size nor apparently intimidating vibes. He growled when one woman staggered too close, glaring at her darkly as she scrambled to get away with a couple stuttering apologies. He didn't care, he didn't like these people anyway.

Yet, something happened near a food store. He blinked as he straightened, peering tall over their heads as he made his way to the ruckus. He paused in time to see a fat man shove somebody, a child by the looks. He bristled as he shoved his way through the gawking crowd of fools. He barely made it to her before she shoved off again, tears streaming down her face as she scrambled through the streets.

He didn't get a good look at her, her body covered with leaves and strangly deformed. Even he paused a moment to watch her, confused momentarily to why she looked so different. His shock wore off however when a sneer met his ears. Turning he glared as the fat man continued to sniff at her retreating back, arms bulging as he laughed.

"What's so funny?" Drayel growled as he turned his attention to the other male. "I see no humor in any of this."

"What's funny is that rat thinking it can just wander in! That mongrel was filthy! Would've scared away my customers it would've!" the man sneered back, glaring at the larger man with challenge. "Why? You know that trash?"

"No, I don't." Drayel answered flatly. His temper however began to show in his body, fists clenching as his shoulders rose and his eyes began to flash. "Yet she ran off in tears because a fat fool like you decided it right to throw her in the dirt."

"Right where she belonged too!" The man snapped. "It's my shop man, if you have a problem with it I'll jus' call the guards! How'd you like that? Getting tossed in jail for disrupting peace!"

"Well I suppose you wouldn't have to look far." Drayel growled as he stalked closer to the frowning cook. Now that they stood toe to toe, it became apparent how large Drayel was and just how muscled he'd become. "Now, either you give me a large bag of good food or I'll damn well feed you to the dogs."

The man paused, his eyes starting to widen as the words sunk in. "Y-You can't do that!"

"I damn well just did. Food or fight? I'm more then ready for both." Drayel answered coldly as he crossed his arms firmly across his chest. "Considering how you threatened a guard, I suppose I could arrest you for that as well, eh? Though, with a bag of food in my hands I suppose it would be hard to haul you to the pens."

The man bristled, his face turning beet red as he gaped his mouth like a fish. Then briskly he stormed back into the restaurant leaving a gaping crowd in his wake. Taking notice of them Drayel turned his glare to them, causing them to scatter quickly with whispered murmurs amongst them. He snorted before turning his attention back to the cook. "Good food as well, or I'll demand double for wasting my time."

A curse and smashing came from the kitchen. Waiting impatiently outside, Drayel turned his eyes towards the alley where the girl had run. Where was she? Finding her wouldn't be hard after all but still... He growled a bit. It would take time and that was only if she'd stopped along the way. He glanced back to the doorway where the cook stood panting, in his clenched hand a medium sized bag of food. Nodding Drayel took it and peered into the bag, taking note of the semi-decent quality with a hint of disgust.

"It will suffice." Drayel said flatly. He tied it back again before turning his attention back to the cook. "I suppose next time you'll think twice before pushing a woman to the ground, won't you?"

The cook turned purple as he promptly began cursing under his breath before storming back inside. Drayel snorted before turning and walking quickly down the alley in which she'd disappeared to. Now, the hard part. Finding the woman amongst all the idiots.

Sky looked up into the eyes of a young woman, a couple years older than herself. At first she shrank away from the woman, still scared and afraid but after meeting her eyes she felt her body relax. The woman was beautiful with eyes that somehow emanated kindness and warmth. With a pang she felt embarrassed, she was acting like a child.

Sky wiped her tears away with part of her cloak, attempting a small sad smile. The kind woman wore beautiful clothes with colors she had never seen except when she came to Marn. Sky never had use for bright colors back home. Sky shifted, her bow had begun to poke into her wings that her cloak covered. She imagined how much a wreck she must look like to this clean beautiful woman. Sky’s clothes were tattered in spots, patched here and there, and her deer skin cloak had stitching that held it all together. The woman’s hair was shiny, and smooth unlike Sky’s own hair which had leaves and sticks woven into the tangles. Her gold leaf pendent had fallen out from under her shirt; it sat just above her breasts gleaming in the light against the plain fabric.

She wasn’t sure what to say, she’s never talked to a woman like this before. Maybe it was a trap, maybe she wanted to hurt her. Sky lowered her eyes at the thought, shrinking farther away. Why else would a woman with such fine things be talking to her? Sky stood, fear in her eyes as she thought of the many ways people could hurt her. Her body was much like a rabbit, frozen before it decided to bolt.

Ryoko didn't know what to think about her, but she was annoyed that she didn't answer her question. For Ryoko, she was used to people don't take long to respond to a question. Ryoko just notice that she wasn't clean and her clothing looked like it also need a wash. The one thing that stood out the most was the gold leaf pendent. At a closer look she could tell that who ever made this had put a lot of time in it. The amount of detail was amazing. As Ryoko continued to look at her she notice that the woman was still afraid.

Ryoko was at a lost of words for this. She never thought of herself as a person who would scare someone or even looked imposing. Ryoko than looked down at herself. Thinking to herself, 'I guess I should act more straight forward.' After thinking that Ryoko looked at her again. At this time she was still looking down. Keeping her smile Ryoko put two of her fingers under her chin. Slowly lifting her head up Ryoko tilted her had and said, "You don't have to be afraid, I just want you two smile and mean it." Removing her fingers from her chin Ryoko grabbed her hand and asked, "My name is Ryoko what is yours?" After she asked that she could hear someone walking to them.

Ryoko started to hold her breath as she waited for who ever it was to come around the corner. As she waited she moved a little closer to the woman. Even with the dirt cover her face she still looked like a cute woman. With some better clothing she would look amazing. That thought alone made Ryoko fear vanish. "It wold be nice to she her clean up and even get her some new clothing" she said outloud without realizing it.

It hadn't taken Drayel long to find the woman. A couple of directions asked, a couple coins tossed and he'd found her. Yet, to his surprise he'd found not just her but another woman as well. This one was decently dressed, covered in blue and just looking at her screamed high class. Why was she venturing near a poor woman? He frowned.

He stayed in the corner, watching just out of sight to try and discover their relation. By the appearances she had nothing but a mere coincidence but he wasn't sure yet. Still when she'd mentioned the clothes and wash he decided to make his entrance, causally but slowly walking towards the pair as he tried to keep himself from appearing rude.

"Perhaps some food first." Drayel pointed out as he stopped a good distance from them. He paused to look between the two, watching the newest one warily as he debated who to give the bag to. Finally he cleared his throat and came closer, stopping now a foot away as he offered the scraggly woman the bag. "It's from the store from earlier. Sorry I took a while, it took a bit to of scolding with him."

Straightening he took a step back again to give her space and hopefully not appear as frightening. He wasn't good with people after all and by the looks this poor woman was scared out of her wits already. So, he tried the friendly approach though without a smile it probably fell flat.

"Are you hurt? I apologize for not getting to you sooner, the crowd was rather thick..."

Sky squeezed her large eyes shut when the woman touched her again, expecting...she didn't know, maybe a knife. But her touch was soft, and her words were not mean or judging. Her breath caught in her throat, maybe this woman was genuinely trying to help. She slowly opened her eyes again, stumbling over what to say.

"Ss-sky, my name is Sky." She mumbled, her eyes studying the dirt in front of her.

Ryoko moved closer to her and said something else but Sky's attention had been drawn to someone else approaching. She made to grab her bow with one hand and an arrow with the other. A huge man appeared, walking towards them. She felt like a child compared to this mammoth of a man, complete with defined muscles and rugged features. As he walked towards her she could feel her heart beat faster, she was sure everyone in the entire city could hear the racing of her heart. Her fast fingers had already knocked an arrow into her bow, but she held it down without it drawn back.

The man held a bag of food towards her, a drool worthy aroma reaching her nostrils. She slowly put her bow and arrow up, looking into the mans face. She was shocked at such kindness after learning he had stood up for her.

Sky snatched the bag, clutching it to her chest. She looked over at Ryoko, than back at the large man as he spoke again.

She could feel a couple bruises she had gotten from the scuffle but other than that she felt fine. She creased her mouth shut, still not sure how to talk to these people. Was she supposed to address them as sir, or mam, maybe madam. She was at a loss. Sky never figured how different the city would be from her home. She shook her head of white hair, indicating she was fine. Her eyes fell on the scar on his face, and the thought crossed her mind that she never wanted to cross this man.

"Thank you." She said softly to him, lowering her eyes. He had armor like the knights in her mothers stories. He certainly wasn't as handsome as the ones her mother had told her about but the scars seemed to give him a kind of rugged appeal. Her cheeks burned as she thought of how great of a knight this man must be, she was embarrassed to be so disheveled in the presence of such greatness.

As the man walked over to Sky and her, he made Ryoko felt small compared to his overall size. It wasn't just height but also the shear amount of musicals he had. They way he stood made Ryoko feel like he was a combat veteran. His pose made him even more attractive than when he was walking over too them. When he said he had a few words with the owner of the store it made Ryoko want to know what happen. She didn't like it if the used to much force than need be, but since he never mention a physical problems.

What caught her by surprised was him handing Sky a large bag of food, and he heard her talking about giving Sky clean cloths. Letting go of Sky's hand she turned to face him. She wondered if he was one of the city guard station in her district, if he was it would be a good idea to keep on his good side. It could always be good to have a few guards on her side if anything bad where to happen.

Ryoko started to rub her left hand on her leg as she lean closer to get a better look at his weapon. As she was leaning towards him Ryoko looked up and asked, "So what is your name kind Sir, and what where these words you had with the owner of the shop?" Ryoko hoped that it wasn't anything to harmful. Thinking to herself, 'Before i jump to any conclusion I should find out what happen. I don't think Sky would do anything wrong, she is to frighten to do anything.'

Looking back at Sky, Ryoko smiled and said, "Why don't we go somewhere where you can seat down and enjoy that food?"

Drayel eyed the clean women with a wary frown. He wasn't really sure how to read her, his first instinct to snap at her for daring to question anything or even press it further. Still, he forced himself to remain calm. He just watched her as she tried to get an eye for the cross bow on his back. Or perhaps it was his sword she was trying to find. He didn't say anything as he leaned back on his heels and gave her the eye.

"I assure you I did him no phyisical harm." Drayel answered coolly. "I simply had a word or two with him about the incident and resorted to simple eye contact when he showed reluctance in making things right. His reputation may have shrank a fair bit due to some of the cussing he used but past that, I see no reason to relive the past. The rest of the incident is not my story to share."

Turning back to the shaggy woman...Sky was it? He offered her a hand and rumbled softly from deep in his throat.

"My name is Drayel Morig, guardsman of Marn and it is a pleasure to meet you both." With that he offered a bow of the head to the both of them as he kept his hand outstretched. "Come on then my Lady. Let's see what we can't do for you." He glanced back over ot the merchant. "Where do yo suppose we should take her then? I haven't a place in mind."

Sky looked at both of the kind people who she never expected to find. She was still suspicious and jumpy, always shifting her weight back and forth and fluffing up her feathers out of a nervous habit. Drayel had a deep voice and he spoke well, she wasn't sure what a guardsman was. Maybe guardsmen protect princesses? Sky stretched out her arms, bending forward in the best curtsy she could manage with her large wings. Surely that was the correct thing to do, maybe a guardsman was a type of knight. He even called her my lady, knights and princes said that, right?

Sky crept slowly towards Drayel, believing him to be the kind knight she had read in her mother's stories. She got as close as she could to him without actually touching him. Her cloak was shaped oddly, her feathers had become ruffled and poked the deer skin and made for an odd shape like she had arrows strapped underneath her cloak.

She glaced up into his rugged face. "I'm Sky." She said in a quiet voice, and lowered her eyes to the bag of food she clutched to her chest.

Ryoko watched as Sky got closer to Drayel, It looked like Sky was finally breaking out of her shell and trying to get to know them. That alone was a good thing but she did get the feeling that Drayel still didn't trust her at the moment. Moving her right hand to her face she began to rub her chin as she thought on how to show she had no motives behind being nice. "Why don't we just go to the park for now. It is a nice day so going over to the park should be enjoyable and relaxing" Ryoko said as she looked over to the main road.

After saying her idea she moved closer to Sky and looked at the food. Smiling at the both of them Ryoko looked back a at Drayel and asked, "So what kind of food did you get for Sky here?" At the same time as they where all talking a few people started walking down the side street. It seemed like they where heading home as the talked about what they did this morning. The atmosphere they gave off was a lot different than the one around the three of them. Looking at the Ryoko said, "So should we start heading over to the park or is there a place you would rather go Sky?"

"Let us say it was a grudging apology gift from a fool." Drayel said with a shrug. He glanced down at Sky who was practically tucked under his arm, frowning a bit in an attempt to understand what was wrong. Normally people avoided guards, not snuggled close. Though that dreamy look she had on earlier may have explained a bit. Still, he felt his gaze soften a bit as he continued to speak. "What do you wish to do? Don't worry about the crowds, I doubt they'd hurt you with myself and such a rich woman near you."

He lowered his head a bit to try and look at her better. There was no way he could be eye level. She was too short. Yet at the same time he could at least attempt to seem smaller. It seemed to be working so far anyway, she wasn't running from him and the other woman Ryoko. He huffed after a moment before straightening and glancing at the blue clad woman.

"You mentioned advice. Are you two newcomers?"

Sky glanced at the people walking down between the houses, she didn't like the way they all seemed to stare at her. She felt safer beside Drayel, because he looked like he knew how to fight and he was kind to her. Ryoko and Drayel didn't look at her like the rest of the town's people. They didn't seem to look down on her.

Sky shook her head in response to Ryoko's question, she didn't know this place.

Sky smiled as she watched Drayel trying to lower himself to be the same height as her. After seeing all these people she had come to the conclusion she is short. The knight towered above her like a fully mature pine tree. She even let out a chuckle when he straightened himself back to his normal height. She relaxed a bit, feeling more comfortable with these people.

"I came from far away, I had to travel many days to get here. " She was once again reminded of her shabbiness compared to Ryoko's beauty.

Grabbing a hold of Sky's arm Ryoko started leading her to the main street. As she walked by Drayel smiled and said, "We don't want to leave our brave guard behind." Walking past him they arrived at the main street. The day was still young and the main street was full of people still. Those near them stopped and looked at them. An older man in all black whispered to the others and with what ever he said the rest of the people looked shocked and started talking even more. Ryoko looked over at them and back at Sky, she assumed they where talking about them but she didn't know if they knew who she was yet. Looking back at Sky she asked, "SO what made you come her Sky?"

After asking her question she looked back at Drayel. Letting go of Sky's hand she walked over to Drayel to the point where their breaths where hitting each other. Looking up into his eyes she smiled and said, "I get the feeling you don't trust me yet so I figured I would let you know who I am. I am the Residential District Magistrate and I came out today to see how everyone was doing and to find some things out." Taking a step back Ryoko continued to talk. "I really hope you can come to trust me, because you seem really nice and I would love to get to know you more."

Happy with what she just did she walked back over to Sky. "The park is right over there" she said as she pointed to the park.

Now Drayel really wasn't sure what to do. One minute he was glaring icy pellets at the murmuring groups and the next Ryoko was talking to him again. Why? What happened? He blinked when she mentioned her title and frowned, confused and rather unsure what to do. Part of the magistrate? Well she was in fancy clothes.

"We shall see what happens." He answered gruffly as he too picked up the pace to stand close to Sky. He didn't like her wandering too far. He glanced down at the raggedy woman, keeping a couple steps between them as he tried keep up mentally. Sky came from far away whilst Ryoko apparently was a bit of a high head. He snorted. Quite the odd trio they made.

"I'm surprised! It seems rather... empty for this time of year. Of course, I haven't been here in since childhood so that may have a factor in it." He frowned as he continued to look around, head tilting slightly as he tried to recall what it looked like before. Surely it was busier than now, the couples and the strayers wandering aimlessly across the streets. He watched almost curiously as one couple decided to try and snuggled while walking and nearly ended upon their faces. He snorted in amusement. "They look a pair of birds."
