Someone was prodding at her arm, slowly rousing Soneya out of her unconsciousness. Something had changed. Had she fallen asleep? Was she at home? What...?
With a start, Soneya awoke, only to realise that her two feet were not on the ground. What on earth was going on? How did she...? What...?

Slowly opening her eyes, Soneya looked up into the dark eyes of Guard Sinuvarakoon and realised that she was actually in his arms. Blushing furiously only half a beat after the realisation hit her, she stuttered. “I... I’m.. Sorry. I mean... Thank you!” she quickly remedied when it hit her just what had happened only a few moments ago – or was it longer? How long had she been out of it?

But, but, Guard Sinuvarakoon had carried her, he had caught her when she had fallen unconscious. He had basically rescued her from being forgotten in Memorial Garden. Her guard in shining armour!

Oh my god, Memorial Garden! Where was the girl? The blind one? “Where is...?”
And who was fiddling with her arm?
It was only now, after she had managed to tear her gaze away from Tasza’s face that she remembered what had woken her up in the first place. Her brain was a bit slow on the uptake, but she finally realised what was going on and that Guard Sinuvarakoon had brought her to the hospital, and not only her but the little blind girl as well.

Stirring to get back on her own two feet, she was determined to stay upright, though a wave of dizziness was already washing over her again. Turning towards the woman, obviously a doctor, who had held her arm, she said apologetically. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to cause you any trouble. I’m fine.” Obviously the pale shade of her complexion stated the opposite, but she wasn’t going to admit to any more weakness in front of so many people.

The whole thing was quickly turning into a living nightmare. Tasza had one girl in his arms, another that -- he took a half step forward to push Soneya towards Miss Sekhara when he realized there was no accompanying tug on his clothing. He twisted his head around and saw the little girl was backing away.

"I need a nurse to take the little girl and this young woman who, despite what she might claim, is in need of aid." His voice and words were flat, his demeanor stoic.

Of course, he wanted to squirm in his discomfort, rip all of his clothes off and dunk himself in a tub of cool water, followed by a thick layer of coltsfoot cream. The stuff was expensive, and he tried not to use it more than he had to, but after such a day as the one he was presently experiencing he felt it was a necessary action. Frustration only made it worse. He desperately wanted to itch himself, but he only ceded a few movements of his head and shoulders to the temptation. He could feel it starting down his arms.

"As soon as you are able to take this young woman off my hands I will return to my duty. Where is my charge?"

The woman’s pulse was quicker than she’d like, but that could be due to circumstance as much as anything else. Observation and inquiry was necessary. Ree released the woman’s arm and gave her a kind, warm smile. “You fainted, your color is off, and your pulse is higher than I’d like to see. Let’s get you checked out before you decide to head home. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen you for this, Miss Soneya.”

Even as Tasza spoke, Keris was patiently waiting with the wheeled bed. She did not want to bother the guardsman. He was gruff. Keris looked away from the man’s helm covered face. She didn’t like that his face was covered.

Ree worked to keep a studiously professional expression as she replied,

“As soon as you are ready to put her down, you are welcome to return to your duty.” Ree gestured to the bed and Keris moved forward, helping the woman onto it.

“Your charge is in her room, recuperating. Should your duties allow, Miss Isyrion would like to speak with your charge.” Ree nodded her head in the direction of the blonde elf, who was prettily dressed and coifed.

"I'LL BE SENDING LOTTI TO FINISH UP THE REPORT, DOCTOR MEH-TARIE!" Guile’s voice boomed out from the back, followed by the solid thud of the rear door closing. Ree’s mouth made a thin line for a moment. To regain her composure, she looked down as her hand moved to her pocket. A breath later and she was fine.

“Keris, please take Soneya to Room Three. Wait..." Ree paused for a moment. "Isn't your surname Vesurian? I think you may have a cousin over there." Ree gestured toward the blonde elf again. Coincidences seemed to abound these days... "I suppose I should make introductions after we have finished your examination."

Now, the little girl. Ree moved around Tasza and crouched down so she was face level with the girl. She knew the girl was blind, but had not met her or had the opportunity to treat her for anything. If memory served correctly, the girl had accompanied her mother when one of her older siblings needed medical care and had reacted the same way then.

“If I am not mistaken, you are one of the Mahiri clan, right? I’m Doctor Metarie.” Again, her voice was warm and kind. Blindness happened. Fathia was not the only blind person in a city of 25,000. Surgeries might restore some sight. Magical healing might as well, but that was for the family to decide.

“You look fine to me. Was there something you needed?”

Navarre returned to the lounge and lowered herself onto a couch, frowning as she supressed thoughts of all the diseased filth that must have sat there before her. If only she had left after speaking with Guile like she’d planned, she wouldn’t be in this mess. Now she had to listen to some street urchin plead her innocence and beg for mercy. That brat cost her a valuable conversation with Metarie, so suffice it to say she wasn’t in a charitable mood.

The doors pushed open, and in came an attendant wheeling the girl in a hospital bed. Putting on a blank expression, she folded her hands on her lap to make sure she didn’t strange the bitch on instict. The courts would make quick work of her soon enough, so there was no need to waste the energy – especially when she had more important matters ahead of her. Navarre attempted to greet her when the orderly wheeled her over, but she launched into her appeal before she could even open her mouth. She’d be amused at the girl’s desperation if she wasn’t so annoyed. Hopefully she’d be able to nab Metarie for a few words if she dealt with the criminal quickly enough.

Once Tamaya finished speaking, Navarre turned to the attendant and smile. “Would you mind leaving us for a few moments, sir? The poor girl’s been through much today, and I’m sure she’d like some privacy while we talk.” As she expected, the attendant nodded his head and left them alone in the lounge.

Navarre turned back to Tamaya after he left. “My dear, I’m sure everything you’ve told me is true. These misunderstandings happen, especially given how hostile Marn can be to magic.” She paused and chuckled. “But I’m afraid the truth doesn’t matter much these days. The government sees you and your kind as a threat, and that’s all it takes to lock you up for the rest of your life… or worse. Perhaps you should have been more careful when planning your educational trip.”

The mock concern melted away, revealing the same demonic expression she had earlier. “Might I make a small suggestion, dear? You should be careful of whose time you waste. I’m hard at work trying to cleanse this city of degenerates like yourself, and you, an insignificant, foolish child, have the nerve to interrupt me. You’ve cost me a valuable opportunity, and now you’re making me stay in this disgusting place even longer. Give me one good reason to help you and not put you on the fast track to the dungeon.”

Some odd, detached part of her was actually impressed by the way the woman first lulled her into a false sense of security, then with the very next sentence turned around and stabbed her in the heart. The rest of her crumbled.

"I - I - I don't k-know," she stammered, unable to hold back tears. Don't stop talking. Say anything. "If I could register… I'm very strong. I could protect you… or someone. Or I could be your example. You could show that the magical… that the degenerates can be remediated. I could talk to others like me, spread the message. Hear how they feel about things."

She was painfully aware of how unconvincing she was. And Lady Navarre's words had robbed her of any belief on the goodness of the cause. But the stories of the bear people were full of young adventurers who had on their journeys ended on the bad side, only to learn a valuable lesson, or to change things for the better.

She found herself calming down a bit, possibly due to the hopelessness starting to sink in. "But I am deeply sorry for wasting your time. I shall speak with Doctor Sehkhara about the registration."

It was the kind words of a stranger that had stopped her from leaving the hospital just then. While she was concerned for her family and more than a little confused over why she was brought there in the fist place, she didn't feel comfortable being surrounded by strangers in a place known for magic use.

"Is...is anybody hurt? This man," she turned back in the direction that the man had been and reached out with her hand to grasp at his own. "He brought me here. They said someone was hurt."

For some reason the name Metarie sounded vaguely familiar. She was sure she had heard it before. It was possible that she had heard her mother, grandmother and sister talk about the woman but she couldn't remember what it was that they had said. All she knew was that she could never remember ever being treated by a female doctor.

But if this woman was somebody her mother knew, that was enough for Fathia to trust this woman.

She hadn’t even realised… How many times had she been to this hospital? How many times had she been treated by the same people? It would be unfair to say that Soneya didn’t have a mind for remembering people’s names but when she was feeling like this, there certainly was no hope for her to form many coherent thoughts. Keris, yeah, Keris, she thought she could remember that name though she wasn’t particularly fond of being helped onto the bed. She didn’t want to, she wasn’t sick.

Though she wasn’t kidding anyone, not even herself. As soon as she felt the bed underneath her, she sank completely onto it, relieved to be able to just let go and lean back her head most of all. That particular movement instantly made her feel a little better. She offered Keris a brief smile before she turned her eyes back on Guard Sinuvarakoon and the little girl.

Upon Metarie’s words, her attention snapped back to the doctor, if only briefly. A cousin? Soneya looked to where Doctor Sehkhara was pointing but couldn’t really distinguish much else other than two people. Her vision was a little blurry and she could feel the increase of pressure behind her skull better than the feel of the bed underneath her back. But she couldn’t remember a cousin. Wasn’t her family supposed to be mostly dead?

“A Vesurian? Are you sure?” she muttered before letting her head loll back. Maybe she should just let Keris do her thing and not fight.

Her eyes looked for the blind girl who was now grabing for Guard Sinuvarakoon. What had she done to this little girl by getting her here? She should have just stayed away instead of thinking that the girl needed her help, which she obviously didn’t. But it was a little too late now. The shadows on the guard’s face were speaking volumes as well. “I’m sorry,” she murmured though she wasn’t sure either of them heard as she was wheeled away by Keris into Room Three as had been ordered by the doctor.

Tasza's tolerance for nervousness had burned out a little more, falling into balance with his frustration with the number of troublesome women he was forced to deal with that very day. He did not glare at Miss Sehkhara, though the temptation was there; unlikely she'd understand why he was glaring at her anyways since she seemed to have lost half her wits in the time he'd been gone. No. No, that was unfair. It was also true that her gentle rebuke had been unwarranted, as he'd given no implication of stupidity. He'd learned long ago to not hand off his load until directed. Tasza followed directions; he followed them very well.

Moving with brisk certainty he took Fathia's hand and pulled her gently in the direction of the doctor. "If the Doctor Sehkhara declares you fit, you may leave the hospital at will, little girl. I must return to my charge."

He did.

Too bad the hospital staff seemed determined to give him the runaround, first with the paperwork (normally he wouldn't file that until his shift was over) and now by moving Tamaya out of her room. Luckily for him the hospital was not overly large, for he found her in her bed in a short manner. Not only did he find the shifter get, he found Navarre, in her expensive clothing with the expression of someone forced to interact with the basest of parasites.

He spoke loudly, though Tamaya had decided to flap her lips more, not caring that he was speaking over her. "Is this woman bothering you, Miss?" He was looking directly at Navarre as he said it. Save for the subject of his sentence, he did not appear to notice Tamaya was in the same room breathing the same air.

Ree chuckled.

"That man is Guardsman Tasza who is doing his duty very well. Miss Soneya is not feeling well. So, I will go see if I can help her feel better. I am going to have Christina point you in the right direction to get home."

Christina Fabios was very human, very non-magical, and a volunteer helper at the hospital. She was hoping Doctor Michael Shea would take notice of her one day.

Speaking of Doctor Shea, he was not a magic user, but he was not a Puradyne either. His lack of magic, human-ness, and training placed him on the roster to treat Puradyne patients. In fact, he had just finished doing the rounds for patients who had to remain at the hospital for a few days.

Michael shook his head. He was still trying to figure out how that vegetable "accidentally" got stuck in that man's buttocks. Well, not really, because he knew it wasn't an accident. The things you see at a hospital... Michael secretly suspected the man did these things because Michael had to be the one to remove them. Add to it, this wasn't the first time. That was a fact that made him feel especially dirty.

"Mr. Faulkes, you are going to damage yourself if you continue this behavior. If that happens, surgery will be required and our best surgeon aside from the Minister of Health is Doctor Sehkhara." The man paled. He did not want the "dirty, stinkin', magic-using elf " to touch him or "that dirty, stinkin' gnome," either. Michael wondered again how Metarie and Rosie could stand to be the brunt of so much hate, so often. He wasn't so Puradyne that he was blind to the value people like the elves and gnomes brought to the City. He hoped playing the race card would keep the man from shoving things up his ass so often. "I hope you understand the severity of the situation, now." Michael fixed Faulkes with a stern gaze. "I do not want to see you in here again for this."

"Oh, Christina," Michael smiled at the blonde woman. "Mr. Faulkes in 209 needs a meal tray. Mind what you put on the tray, would you? I think Keris is helping Doctor Sehkhara."

Christina blushed prettily when Doctor Michael smiled and looked up at him with a puppy-dog gaze. "Whatever you need, Doctor Shea."

"Thank you, Christina." With that, Michael made his way to the doctor's station where Metarie and Fathia were speaking. Just in time, he heard Metarie's comment.

"Oh, and Christina," he called over his shoulder, "when you finish with that, we need you up front."

WE need you up front. A spike of jealousy ran through her. Christina narrowed her eyes and twisted her mouth up into a grimace while she put a bowl of flavored gelatin, some sliced fruit, and a cup on the tray. First the freak in room 209, then the front desk. Christina sighed, then brushed her hands down the front of her red and white striped apron. Next she checked her hair, making sure it was in place. Then, she took the freak his food.
She smiled prettily at Mr. Faulkes.

"I heard what Doctor Shea told you, Mr. Faulkes. He is right, you know. Plus, if you keep bothering him, I might have to put something in your fruit salad to make sure you stop. We are going to be married, you know, and a wife should always protect her husband." She had such an angelic face and smile, but the smile did not reach her eyes. Mr. Faulkes paused, spoon hovering before his lips. A few pieces of fruit fell to the tray.

"There, there." Christina patted the man's other hand. "I didn't say NOW, did I? I am just telling you that Doctor Shea's impressive skills are really best used elsewhere. You do this to yourself for foolish reasons." Christina leaned forward and whispered conspiratorially. "He isn't into that sort of thing." Smiling smugly, she leaned back.

"Don't forget! If you need something just ring the bell." Christina waved at Mr. Faulkes with a chipper smile as she left the room.

Finished with her first task, Christina moved to the front. Doctor Sehkhara was just straightening up, giving the weird little girl a smile. Christina resisted the urge to roll her eyes. That blind, little freak can't see the smile, why bother? Giving an inward sigh, Christine walked to Doctor Shea.

"Yes, Doctor Shea?"

"Would you help this girl get back to her family?"

"Anything for you, Doctor Shea!" She responded perkily, blonde hair bobbing up and down in its pony tail.

"Doctor Sehkhara, Doctor Shea says I should help this young lady find her way home. I'll take her now." Christina took the girl's hand without asking. "Are you ready? I can take you all the way, or I can take you wherever you are familiar enough to get home on your own."

Still perky, Christina smiled at the girl because everyone else did, so it was in her voice. And, you just know these blind ones just know in other ways if you're being sincere and genuine. Freaks! If it wasn't enough there were things walking around that looked ALMOST human, but weren't...

"Yes, thank you..." Ree appreciated the young woman's efficiency, but felt she was sometimes a little too efficient. Turning, she realized Tamaya was IN THE WAITING ROOM with Isyrion and the Guardsman. Why? She was supposed to be in L-1, waiting for the guardsman to return not having a conversation with Isyrion unaccompanied. Inwardly, Ree groaned. This would definitely go in a report somewhere and she would have to speak to Keris about following protocols.

Navarre raised a brow when she started crying. As overwhelming as she knew the thought of rotting in a jail cell must be, it wouldn’t kill her to face her fate with a bit of dignity. Bawling like an infant wasn’t exactly helping her case. Though as much as she hated to admit it, the girl had a point – using a reformed magic-user as a mouthpiece for her propaganda could be useful. It would give her argument more weight to sway those still on the fence. Not everyone would fall for it, but she doubted the average person would be smart enough to see through the charade.

Perhaps this girl was worth her while after all. But even though she had a useful new resource, Metarie still needed her attention. This had to go quickly.

“Wait a moment,” she said, raising her hand. “Your pathetic sobbing aside, you raise an interesting point. As stupid as this city’s people are, not all of them are buying my message. My most recent publications aren’t winning over any support I didn’t already have, if the surveys are to be believed. But to have one of their own turn on them, shed light on their crimes…”

Rising from her seat, she crossed her arms and looked Tamaya over like a piece of meat. A “reformed criminal,” broken and pathetic, sharing her story with the compassionate Lady Navarre, the only one willing to give her a second chance. She’d have Calder or one of the others ghostwrite a testimonial, plaster Tamaya’s sad face over it and she’d have a tearjerker to win the hearts and minds of the doubters. And better yet, sponsoring this filth might give her a better chance of winning Metarie’s favor. That woman was far too wrapped up in that social justice nonsense for an aristocrat of her standing.

Smiling, she leaned in closer to Tamaya. “You’ve found yourself an out. If you do whatever I say, no questions asked, I can make your troubles disappear.” As she spoke she crept even closer, and soon her lips were inches from Tamaya’s ear. She continued in a whisper, “But if you cross me, there will be nowhere you can hide. I will find you, and I will devour you. You are mine.”

Glimpsing Tasza standing near the door, she pulled away from Tamaya and glared at him. How long had that buffoon been standing there? “What is it? I expected this would be a private conversation.”

She nodded her agreement to everything the horrible woman said. No, she had no desire to comply, but neither did she see another way out. The most important thing was to survive.

Learn from everything. Anything can be used as fertiliser for growth. Growing is not possible without acquiring a few scars in the process.

"I will help you," she said, rather flatly. "I will obey you."

She hadn't noticed Tasza before Navarre spoke to him, and even so she couldn't see who it was. She leaned back on her pillows, praying for the situation to be over. Now more than ever she wanted to hide in her room and sleep. She felt dirty.

She felt a soft, gentle hand take hers and start to lead her towards the door. Before she left though, she had something very important that she had to do first. Fathia fished through her pockets and pulled out a small bundle of undyed linen, not much bigger than the palm of her hand. She handled her package as if it were a delicate treasure that needed to be given the utmost care. With such care she carefully pulled back the layers of cloth to reveal half of a sticky pastry that had been leftover from breakfast and she presented it to the guardsman.

"Here," she said. "I want to thank you for helping me."

Her father had always said that it was important to thank those that helped you and she could think of no better way to thank one of the many heroes of the city than by sharing with him one of her father's top selling baked goods. Her father would understand.

The room was not exactly decorated a lot but there wasn’t much to be expected from a hospital. It was still a hospital after all but Soneya felt cold all of a sudden. She had been examined so many times before and Doctor Sehkhara had, although always gentle and kind, not managed to find the source for her headaches. In a way, she simply didn’t want to go through this ordeal anymore. She had accepted her fate, the fact that headaches simply were an almost daily companion for her. Why did she have to do this again?

Trying to focus on something else other than her own pain, Soneya watched Keris, as the nurse went about her routine of preparing everything the doctor needed for her examination. Seeing instruments and medicine wasn’t actually helping the young woman though and she averted her eyes again. Sighing, she just hoped this would be over soon. Of course, the good thing about the whole ordeal had been lying in the incredibly strong arms of Guard Sinuvarakoon.
Now there was an interesting line of thought to pursue. She had never realised that he was actually rather handsome. Maybe not in a typical kind of way, but to Soneya… A smile playing around her lips, she ignored the fact that he hadn’t been overly friendly beyond what was required of a guard. After all, he had caught her and he had carried her here. Her knight in shining armour…

Before she could lose herself in a daydream however, something else poked at her mind again. “Keris? May I ask you something? Who is that woman who was out there just now? The one Doctor Sehkhara pointed out to me? Could you tell me about her please?” She had never seen the woman before, at least not that she could remember but the doctor had thought they might be related?

Tasza had left without a backwards glance at Fathia, without hearing her words or seeing her outstretched hands. In a like manner, his entrance and his words, loud as they were, were ignored by both Navarre and Tamaya. They continued speaking as if he had not entered.

Working as a guard meant one had to possess two abilities: disappearing, and having a commanding presence. Failing at the latter was embarrassing and frustrating, but holding to his dignity was more important than trying a second time. He waited, and was rewarded by some interesting words from the lady. Hah, even the upper-class fluff were capable of showing claws once in awhile. . .

What was more interesting was the shifter's response. Tasza didn't know what was going on, and he wasn't sure how to feel about it. Something to mull over when he was off duty or standing guard.

They finally noticed him.

"This woman is my assignment until she has been properly processed, ma'am."

He didn't like the way Navarre had addressed him. He didn't like the way the beast had decided to swear loyalty to someone before the government had properly processed her and decided whether or not she merited punishment. Tasza didn't like a lot of things, but he was on duty. He remained impassive.

Christina moved toward the door, but a tug on her hand made her pause. Keeping the smile on her face, she looked down to find the little girl doing something with. Ew! A half-eaten whatever that is for that guardsman?

"Oh, sweetie..." Christina breathed out in her kindest voice, "Guardsman Tasza has already gone off to get that Shifter in the other room. I can give that to him for you, if you'd like?" Christina didn't want Dr. Michael to think she was horrible to children. After all, she planned to have several of his children and she wanted him to see she was good with them.

Ree put her right forefinger and middle finger against her right temple and rubbed to remove the throbbing. Except for Tamaya's being in the wrong place, the scene really was not as disorganized as she felt it to be. Michael was at the front, ready to handle any new intakes. Christina would make sure the Mahiri girl made it home safely. Guile had left. Lotti had not arrived. Granted, Isyrion was another thing to consider, but that was for later. Right now, Ree had a patient to help and that, really, was all that mattered. Hearing Fathia's sweet words, Ree's hand dropped and she couldn't help but smile again, a warm feeling filling her heart. Children sometimes epitomized the best facets of the people of Marn. Like that, the stress melted away and Ree's resolve returned. Christina handled it well. Ree hoped the child would not be too put out that Guardsman Tasza left so abruptly.

"Ah, Michael. The patient with the Guardsman is a Shifter, accused of practicing magic within city limits without a license. She has been severely injured and needs to recuperate for at least three days in room L-1. " Ree reached for Tamaya's patient file and held it out to Michael. "She required extensive stitching. The medication list is noted in the file. When they finish, would you please make sure Ms. Tamaya actually makes it to the room? Soneya Vesurian is back with more headaches and another fainting spell. I'll take the diagnostic this go around."

Michael took the file and nodded, listening to his senior. "I've run every diagnostic test we have for her, but if you can find something that would be a good thing." Michael shook his head. "She appears to have had these episodes for years. Though, you should know her family are extremely anti-magic. I think that is part of the reason you haven't seen her before."

Ree was pulling Soneya's file as she listened. She nodded. "I know. I figured as much. Mr. Faulkes have another vegetable encounter?" Ree quirked an eyebrow and the pair shared a knowing look.

"You know he did."

"Never..." Ree gave a little smirk, which disappeared as quickly as it appeared. She sighed and shook her head. "You'll just have to shave your head.
