Re: Yiamas!
Ah, finally Sisara rode to the rescue. She was not surprised to learn Farius had felt equally desperate being alone with her and trying to strike a conversation. Nor was she particularly unhappy about that.
At the other woman's comment, she turned to look towards the bar. Were they actually throwing knives? "Are they actually throwing knives?" She covered her eyes with her hand. "I'm off-duty!"
Before she managed to sink any further into the pit of despair, Sisara produced three shots seemingly out of nowhere. She snatched one and downed it with one gulp. "Thank the Changers, I needed this! Whoa." At first, the shot made her stomach roil. Immediately after, the feeling was replaced with intense internal warmth, and near-complete loss of any higher brain function. "Wow. That was not meant for humans." It took some concentration to get her tongue to go to right places to form the words.
Freed from all care, she turned her chair to face the bar and leaned back to enjoy the show.

Re: Yiamas!
Barring a glance over his shoulder to discern who the new arrival was, Ferric neither turned around nor ceased his incessant writing. It was much easier to keep his thoughts clear without looking the raging guardsman in the face, in addition to being a sure way to wound Drayel’s pride.
The dwarf’s intervention proved problematic. Analyzing the issues of a dwarf was comparable to discerning the motives of a bull. They were often simple, straightforward, and worst of all, their faces were different enough that Ferric had greater difficulty with their body language than he would with a more humanlike species. In addition, he found himself outnumbered, and balancing the issues of two separate people in a manner which simultaneously disabled both of them was nearly impossible, even for him.
Ferric chose the simplest way out: the truth, albeit skewed. He looked directly back at the big guard and said “I merely complimented him for lightening up a bit.” Ferric’s blank, slightly bemused gaze did an excellent job feigning ignorance. If Drayel bought it, he would look inwards for what had caused his outburst and further poison his own soul. It was a mildly weak tactic which relied on the insecurities of his opponent, but the dwarf’s presence as a mediator necessitated such subtle attacks. Again he lamented the stout guardsman’s intervention, for Ferric was certain he could have done much better without him. His quill tapped his chin thoughtfully. “Apologies, Drayel. I am not sure what about my praise has angered you, but I meant you no ill will.”

Re: Yiamas!
The intention Tasza had in turning away after Drayel had not been to go with the other guardsman to his table, but to question the reason. Ferric was being Ferric. That Tasza was embarrassed about accidental eye contact with a woman's breasts was just another seed to toss into the bag, a brief release for Ferric that would sooner or later be forgotten in favor of some other target. So Tasza had stood and slipped off his stool, reached out to grab Drayel's shoulder and stop the man, invite him closer for drinks (after all, it wasn't Ferric's fault he was the way he was) rather than splitting them all apart. Someone like Drayel, and someone like Ferric – these were the sorts of men Tasza could feel most normal around.
He hadn't noticed Darrik slip in, and not just because the man was a dwarf and abnormally short in the wider world of humankind. But there the dwarf was, reliable as anything. Tasza respected Darrik. Barely saw him outside of exchanging patrols or when they reported for training, but there it was. That he was a dwarf made Tasza uncomfortable when he thought about it, but overall he could appreciate a man willing to stand up for what he believed in. Especially when the drinks were flowing and men turned over their character to find something new and unkind. How many guards were in the bar, and how many of them were presently willing to do a damn thing?
"He's right," Tasza said. Being that he was close to Drayel, he was in good position to physically block Ferric from sight. "You gotta just let the things Ferric says go. He's just a – well, he's a Loyalist. He asks questions, gets answers, has to get inside the minds of criminals all day. Him loosening up – yeah, sometimes it's a bit rough. Get Guardsman Drayel here a drink, hey Vintas? No need to mess up Vic's place when he's worked so hard to make it. . ." garish decorations, overly bright lights, overbearing music, "nice."

"Indeed." Drayel said crisply though his back stepping was more forced then willing. He looked down at the dwarf and then slowly over at his fellow guard before letting loose a strained rumble. He turned his burning gaze to Vic and forced his head to bow. "My apologies Vic. I hadn't meant to cause trouble though I still think your a disgusting waste of flesh, ya fat maggot."
Drayel huffed darkly at Ferric before turning his whole body stiffly away from them and lumbered back to his corner where he sat before, tense and huffing as he leaned back on his chair and closed his eyes. His lip twitched. He took in a deep breath and forced himself to think up a riddle. To take his mind off his fury, to make his brain work. A riddle.
"There is a line of ducklings crossing the path towards a pond. There is two in the front of the line, two in the back of the line, and one in the center. How many ducklings are in that line?" Drayel muttered after moment. He chuckled at absolutely nothing before he tried to think of another. His brain complained instead and gave him pictures of the crocodiles at the pond's edge. He frowned before cracking open an eye and peering warily at Ferric. Yes, he did sort of resemble a crocodile.
Cunning, deadly, fat mouthed and ugly to boot.

Re: Yiamas!
Darrik was relieved. Last thing any of them needed was guards shedding the blood of other guards. That kind of thing could poison the morale of an entire watch in the dwarf's opinion. What relieved him even more was that there was at least one other guard who seemed to give a damn that evening. Darrik caught Tasza's eyes and gave the man a courteous nod by way of thanks.
Returning his gaze to the two who'd come close to blows, Darrik realised he didn't particularly give a damn what they'd been arguing over. The dwarf said nothing more once it was clear things had eased off, but he got the impression that Ferric was a sly weasel and Drayel was a hot-headed twit. What had Henrik hoped he'd get out of this evening anyway? Socialise indeed.
When Tasza made an effort to distract Ferric, Darrik suddenly he realised he still had the tankard and Drayel's dagger. With a grunt he separated the two, left the ruined tankard on the bench in favour of collecting his own, and tromped over to where Drayel had removed himself. Darrik returned the large guard's property without comment, placing it on the table next to him. With a polite nod, the dwarf would turn to scan the room for a quiet spot.

"You can sit here if you would like." Drayel grumbled cracking open and eye to peer sheepishly at the dwarf. Noticing his dagger he picked it up with a grunt of thanks and returned it to its sheath, huffing as he turned a subtle red. "I won't cause you trouble though I suppose I owe you an apology."
Drayel grimaced as he glanced around as well and snorted. He looked for the other guard who helped his temper cool, wondering if he could find him and buy him a drink as apology. Then again, this is what he had to do now too right? Wasn't that normal protocal? He sighed a little as he rubbed his aching head. He wasn't good at these things.
"I hadn't meant any harm nor troubles for you Sir Darrik. My apologies on behalf of my shameful behavior." Drayel said gruffly keeping his eyes turned away. Hesitantly he cleared his throat. "Ah... and since you probably left your drink on my behalf I'll buy you another."

Darrik was a bit surprised the bloke spoke to him, though it was a mark in his favour. The dwarf turned back to Drayel, revealing the tankard already in his other hand "Fear not mate: no dwarf worth his beard leaves a beer behind. But I'll take your offer of a seat." Settling himself in, Darrik added with a smile "Between that little situation, and my face, I reckon we're likely enough to be left in peace a short while."
Darrik acknowledged the apology with a nod, and said "Just remember: if a bloke pisses you off, punch him in the nose. Nobody looks twice at that. What you don't do is draw a bloody weapon in a bar. That's just escalating trouble t'the point o'no return, right?"
Darrik took a long draw of his stout. "Anyway, I ain't no sergeant or Inquisitor, so I won't belabor the point. An' I'm not goin' to pry, neither. I reckon a quiet an' relaxing drink is what the moment calls for, aye?"

Sisara kept her gaze on the group at the bar, though her eyes started to glisten as tears rose in them from the sting of the shot. Gosh, what on earth had that liquor been? Blinking a few more times, she tried to clear her vision – and her head, though there was no telling what good blinking would do for that. She was oddly surprised to see that Tasza was still where he had started off despite Ferric’s humiliating jibe.
It felt like a balloon was sadly deflating when the dwarf suddenly stepped in and the whole situation was resolved with merely a few words. Dissatisfied, Sisara grunted something unintelligible before flopping back down in her previous seat, just in time for her food to arrive too. Thanking the maid, she instantly dug in, only now realising just how hungry she was, and happily ignoring the lot of them, except for Farius and Lina.
After the first few bites to settle the initial hunger, she looked up at the two, picking up her previously unanswered question. “So what is the plan for tonight? Are we going to hang here all evening or are we going to roam about a little afterwards to see other festivities too?” She wouldn’t mind disappearing for a while, especially since she could still feel the others’ presence behind her back and wouldn’t mind being rid of that feeling.
As if Vic had heard her question and wanted to change her mind about leaving his bar, the orchestra he had hired strummed a few instruments in preparation. “Oh, almost midnight already!” Sisara muttered, digging back into her food as she preferably wanted to be finished before the stroke of midnight. She hadn’t notice time pass, but seems as though even with an interrupted show, the minutes had flown by nevertheless.

Ferric was surprised when Tasza defended him, though he supposed he shouldn’t have been. Tasza looked up to him for some unfathomable reason. Ferric drank slowly as he watched Tasza’s efforts prove insufficient to draw Drayel to forgiveness, but that was to be expected. Ferric had struck gold with the comment about loss, and a stammering young guard would not be enough to hide the sudden insight Ferric had granted him.
He supposed he ought to stop remembering Tasza as a child. While Tasza had been barely twenty when they first met, he had been working in the guard for a good seven years or so now. It was nearly as long as Ferric himself had been around which meant the younger guard could handle himself. Ferric’s finger tapped rhythmically on the countertop as he scanned his friend, the sound of nervous laughter in the background dying down as the tension of the confrontation vanished from the room.
“I appreciate your defense.” He said simply, not bothering to put too much emotion in his voice. “Are you certain you don’t want that drink? It might help, erm... hm.” Ferric was finding himself remarkably underprepared when it came to building people up, rather than breaking them down. He sighed, putting two fingers to his forehead wearily. “Ah, forget it, why don’t we just catch up instead. Teonidus knows we haven’t had much time lately with all my raids ending in some historic district warehouse.” He searched for a suitably related topic to inquire about, and asked, “How have your patrols been treating you lately? You don’t appear to be missing any body parts, so I assume they’ve been going well?”

Re: Yiamas!
Neither Dray nor Darrik showed any particular interest in Tasza or what he had to say. It was expected more than felt, but noticed all the same. With that in mind, a sweep around the tavern to look for any more conflict was a necessary thing. Rather than respond immediately to Ferric's question, Tasza took his time checking the locations of the other guards and the citizens who were settling into the tavern for the celebration. Only a few of them were drunk enough to not have noticed the altercation; it wasn't that loud yet or that full that Drayel's disquiet could so easily be ignored or unseen.
As a result, there were a few patrons who had slipped out even though it had ended peaceably. Tasza sighed and shook his head. He spent enough time in and around brawls and other such disturbances that he could recite word for word each of the numerous complaints often delivered to the guard on duty in the area; it was usually no big manner for those involved, but for the operating owner of said tavern or inn it could mean whopping losses in profit. He'd heard of one or two owners having to let go some of their staff in order to recoup losses when the damages were especially high, or if bad rumors lent themselves to fewer patrons nights after. Unless, of course, the taverns in question were in the bad parts of town, and then it was more a matter of getting good information about the what and the why.
Which lead him back to the present, and the too many seconds that had passed since Ferric had spoken.
"That's not like you, being so provocative in public. Is something wrong?" Tasza's brow furrowed as he finally looked at the cause of it all, unable to fully keep the disapproval out of his voice. He shook his head quickly, holding up a hand as he stepped closer to the bar so they could speak more quietly. "I'm sorry, it's just . . . well, Qe dragged me out of my apartment to come here tonight. I'd hate to be making arrests on my night off. Oh," he said the last as if just realizing he was being rude, "Sorry again. Did you say something, Ferric? I'm woolgathering, it would seem."

"Indeed." Drayel said with a soft sigh. "Both on relaxing and the stupidity of the weapon. I would have punched him but I fear I would go farther than a mere dagger throw. My temper tends to get me in quite a bit of trouble."
Drayel sighed again as he leaned back and looked around, watching Tasza and Ferric with an almost calculating look. He felt the burn of anger burning still, building like a bonfire until he turned away and growled heavily at the table in disgust.
"Ignorant pig." he scoffed as he gave his long-since empty cup a shallow glare, it's unfilled belly offending him with its lack of drink. "I understand him being an investigator but I do not like being pinned up like a bug on a wall. Pah! Bunch of-.... Apologies, I'm getting worked up again."
With that he pinched his nose and started to grumble.

Re: Yiamas!
Darrik could understand wanting to smack a bloke in the head for being a prat. A decent proportion of his youth was spent in the odd bar punch-up over some philosophical differing of opinion. In fact, it lasted until about halfway through his journeyman period when the dwarf started to mellow out a bit. Might have also had something to with Hylde's calming influence.
These days, it took a lot to stir Darrik's temper, so the dwarf took a long draw of his stout while the larger guard rambled some of the anger out. "Seems the two of you have somethin' of a history. Probably the first time I've seen a guard draw on another guard. Somethin' serious, I take it?" Darrik took another swallow of ale "Teodinus knows we normally have our hands full enough with rowdies and criminal bastards."
Darrik could think of a dozen things he'd rather be doing, but if Drayel was sitting there talking, he wasn't up at the bar knifing Ferric. Which pretty much came under his job description of keeping the peace in Marn. Darrik didn't know either guard all that well, truth be told, due to the different schedules between their watch and his. "Ever considered applyin' for a change in watch? Might be worth a thought, if the two of you get on like fire and oil. It's a blimmin' hassle of a process I hear, what with the staff sergeants wantin' to know the whys an' wherefores, but it might be worth the headaches in the long term."

Re: Yiamas!
"The last time I asked for a switch the slimy bastards stuck me on Gnome watch." Drayel grouched in clear displeasure. "Before that, drunk's-gone-naked patrol. No, if I just have to put up with that idiot then I keep my schedule and my mentality."
He snorted before rolling his eyes.
"Of course, I need to control my temper and stop angering my superiors as well. Doesn't mean it will happen any time soon." He barely glanced up as he was handed a drink that swapped his empty one. Well, Vic did know him pretty well though most of the time it was him getting thrown on the streets. He glanced up sheepishly as the other gave him a sharp look. He chuckled weakly. He pulled the mug close and took a tentative sip, eyes remaining on Vic who snorted at him. "Enough about me though, you are Sir Darrik? How has the days been treating you dare I ask?"

Re: Yiamas!
Darrik wondered if he'd ever sounded so damn silly when he'd been younger, muttering about Holsted into his pints of an evening. Humans aged quickly, physically speaking, but Darrik was never quite so sure about everything else. Half the time it seemed that a thirty year old human man was about as mature as a 30-year old dwarven youth. One had to have patience with them, Darrik supposed, so he let the comment about gnomes slide. Gnomes and Dwarves tended to get the same kind of treatment in Marn, by and large, and Darrik wasn't presently in the mood for breaking noses in the name of racial equality.
The dwarf guard quietly let Drayel ramble into his cups until the large bloke asked him a question. "Me? Mostly patrollin' the ruins. Except for the odd secondment to Auxiliary, when the bastards need someone with an iron stomach t'head into the sewers for an extended patrol." Darrik drank another mouthful of lager " Y'know what it's like. Mostly breaking up brawls when the terrible beer down in old city drowns folks' common sense and gets 'em all fidgety. Not a lot out o'the ordinary, not since I killed some large troll-ugly rat in the sewers. Apart from the usual, I've straightened out a couple of pickpockets, and broke the nose of some stupid thief I caught climbin' out of a bloke's window on me way home a month back." Darrik emptied his beer. "Business as usual, really. Nothin' to complain about."
The dwarf examined his empty, and pushed the tankard away. "Truth be told, Drayel, I should probably be thinkin' about headin' on. Need t'get in the right way o'sleepin' over the next day, what with a midnight shift on me blimmin' horizon. Nothin' like the night watch to bludgeon the hell out of your rest, eh?"

Need t'get in the right way o'sleepin' over the next day, what with a midnight shift on me blimmin' horizon. Nothin' like the night watch to bludgeon the hell out of your rest, eh?"

Re: Yiamas!
Boy, Farius was in a good mood. He felt like snuggling with something, and he was sure he had a lovely self-contented grin on his face. Composure, Farius, said the part of his mind that had trained itself to function under this much alcoholic influence. Thankfully, it had control of his body, and Farius straightened and welcomed himself back to reality. He looked back at the bar. Damn. The bar fight hadn't escalated like he wanted, and after a while, it had no indication of coming back. Just calm conversation.
Where was Sisara? Oh, there she was. She was okay for the moment, but she might try to ruin his fun. The sensible part of Masello hoped she would stay around in any case.
But boy, that constable was looking very nice.
With a smoldering smile, Farius said calmly, "Say, Lina, what do you say we quit this musty old place?"
