"Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Rhyn chuffed laughter at Kaevad's apology for not carrying her. She'd much rather keep her two, or four, feet on the ground. As he advised her of the cave outside of touch, she nodded, and her tail flicked out as she turned around, brushing against his wing as she shifted fully into her cat form, loping away.
She flicked her ears and tail in farewells to the villagers who noted her passage, and was glad to go ahead of the others. Leaving the small hamlet behind made her relax a little all on its own. The lope through the forest, while it left her panting off excess heat, was also calming. It didn't take her long to find the cave that the dragon-shifter had spoken of, and once there, she paced around it slowly, checking its safety. It was large enough for three to spend a short time in.
The clearing around it was open, but small, and Rhyn shook herself as she patrolled around it for a short time, inspecting any possible dangers. There were none that she found, aside from normal possibilities of the woods. She shook herself. She much preferred the dangers of the high reaches. They made more sense to her, and the sharp, clear air didn't clog her nose with too many smells.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
His wings, which had been keeping a steady beat, faltered as surprise rocked his system. He recovered quickly enough to fix what was bothering Soneya. "I'm under the impression you missed the rest of my statement." he voice was amused. "I meant, love, that you command more power than she does. You have courage that rivals a dragons from what I can see. And you are loyal. Those are magics of their own kind. You could have magic, I don't know, but I meant you are magical as a woman." he paused a moment toblet his words sink in before adding his own little embarassing admittance. Tit for tat and all.. "And I love having you in my arms. Makes me feel safe.."
Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Now, Soneya truly felt embarrassed. There was so much she had missed in what he had said, it wasn’t even funny. And it seemed as though she had missed the best parts of it, on top of it all. “Oh.. sorry,” she muttered, once again proving that she was really not used to being complimented in any way. But when Kaevad admitted to feeling safe with her in his arms, Soneya momentarily forgot her predicament and strained her neck to look up at him. “Safe? With me?” She was incredulous. How was that even possible? He was such a large and fierce dragon, even as a human he had something going if the muscles on his upper body were anything to go by, and he, he felt safe being with her?
“Shouldn’t it be the other way around?” she chuckled, attempting a joke to avoid feeling too thrown by the statement. She refused to consider the implications of such words, knowing that it would likely send her into fits of extreme shivering and blushing again, and she didn’t want that now. She didn’t want him to be overly aware of how she felt about him, aside the fact that she didn’t know how she would go about expressing it anyways. As far as interpersonal relationships were concerned, Soneya was a bit of a failure sometimes. She ran to everyone’s aid if she could and she would believe the worst lies someone could tell her, but when it came to her own person, she wasn’t quite as accomplished. Rhyn and Kaevad were slowly changing this a little and she really cared about both of them, but she could never tell them as much. Not consciously at least.
“Is that the cave you mentioned?” Soneya asked, abruptly changing the topic as she looked down. She could see something, but wasn’t quite sure what it was, but anything was better now than talking about anything possibly relating to emotions.

Rhyn sighed, and not finding anything dangerous around her, shrugged off her cloak, stepping out into the open clearing area and stretching. Her white fur gleamed in the light of the day, black rosettes standing out in stark contrast. Falling to all fours, she yawned, continuing to stretch in the manner of a cat, her back arching and her tail as well. She shook herself, bits of debris falling from her coat. She could use a good brushing, but was unsure if she still had the brush she had picked up in one of the lowland towns on her way down. She had never needed to brush her fur clear of debris in the high reaches. the woman sighed, knowing that nothing would ever compare to her homeland in her eyes.
Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
"indeed it should, and indeed it is..." He murmured, looking down at the indicated cave. Seemed his little lass tired of his company... or perhaps... perhaps she didn't wish to be near him. The thought saddened him, so he descended. Lighting down carefully he set Soneya down before moving away, the bags draped easily across his back. He tossed them to the side, by the rocks and moved back out to get firewood, his thoughts dark and deep.
If she didn't want to be near him... he'd have to respect that. After all, few could handle a dragon... or an honest man, really. He gathered wood, still pondering, and made his way back to the cave as night began to fall. He was tired, mentally drained and possibly a little grumpy as he walked into the entrance. Ignoring the 2 women he dumped a handful of the logs into the pit and spat fire in it, setting the rest close enough by they could reach it with little hassle.
"You two get some rest, I won't be sleeping for awhile." He voice was even, neutral, and far away as he sat by the entrance and stared out into the stars, his tail flopping on the ground much like Rhyn's would.

Kaevad’s mood had darkened drastically within a short amount of time and it threw Soneya because she coulnd’t help but feel that it was her fault. Yet, she didn’t know how she could remedy it, nor did she know what exactly it was she had done. Although it dawned on her that maybe it was because she had grown distant as soon as they had mentioned emotions.
Preparing the cave for a comfortable night, laying out the furs and sorting out some food for dinner was done quickly and while Rhyn generally didn’t seem to mind much when there was no, or not a lot of talking, Soneya felt uncomfortable now, even more so when Kaevad came back and completely ignored them. She didn’t want to act overly needy so she tried to ignore the situation but the atmosphere was slowly getting to her. Or maybe she was just overreacting but after Rhyn and her had eaten – during which time Soneya felt better, reveling in the calming presence of the snowleopard – her anxiety returned fully. A throbbing headache had started up as well and Soneya soon felt as though the walls of the cave were closing in on her.
Abruptly, she got up and squeezed past Kaevad, not looking back at either of them. “I need air,” she murmured briefly and off she was. Nightfall was just around the corner and she knew it would start getting dark soon but she didn’t care. She needed fresh air and she desperately needed to get away from that oppressing atmosphere. Not planning on going too far, she was relatively certain that she wouldn’t have a problem finding the way back to the cave again despite not knowing the landscape. She just needed a few moments of liberating peace and quiet so she could wrap her head around what was going on and what even had happened in the last few days. There had been so much and so little time to think about anything.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Rhyn had smiled upon their arrival, glad that she had found the right cave. After all, who knew how many there might actually be in the area? It could just be the one, but it could've been among ten or twelve or more. With a very quiet greeting, she helped Soneya set up the cave for a comfortable night, noting the strained atmosphere between the dragon and the young girl. Her ears flicked in confusion. What was going on between the two? Soneya seemed fine for a while, enjoying the meal that she share with the snow leopard by her side, but as they sat near the fire and Kaevad's brooding presence only seemed to increase, she ran out into the swiftly darkening evening.
The snowleopard stared after Soneya for a few moments, brush in hand. She had been planning to ask the young girl to help her groom debris from her fur. While she was able to get much of the branches and leaf bits out herself, a proper grooming took another's help. And down among the lowlands she was beginning to shed some, the warmer climate affecting her body. She would have to thicken her fur once more to be in the high reaches again.
She came up next to Kaevad instead. "Let her take a short walk. I will keep an ear tuned, and search once it is dark. Meanwhile... could you?" Her pale eyes were hopeful as she held out the brush, and the firelight gave a bit of site to the dirt that was sprinkled through her coat. Changing wouldn't take it out. The dirt would cling to her skin instead of her fur. Granted, it was easier to wash it off, but she didn't know where the river was, and getting brushed was also something enjoyable. Perhaps it would lighten Kaevad's mood.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
He wanted - desperately - to go after her, his brooding likely didn't help matters but still- wait, brushing? Kaevad's eyes focused on the brush before smiling and nodding. Sitting up so he could reach around her better, Kaevad began the calming chore of grooming his friend. He was careful, and thorough as he worked, picking out larger chunks of debris with his claws and brushing out the rest.
All the while, though, his mind was working hard. Why run? Was she upset at him? Did he upset her? How did he upset her? He was giving her the space she needed! Women... he stroked Rhyn's fur, eyes distant. Aileen had done something similar before, once. It had been after a fight about children. He was as against having them as any man ever could be - he refused to pass the curse to any others. As such he'd been very careful while... well. You get the idea.
Green eyes watched the entrance worriedly. It was getting dark, where was she?

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
The clean air was letting Soneya breathe and despite her worries and her headache, she soon felt better. She had not realised how much she needed a bit of time to herself, even if just for a bit. Slowly, she began to order the thoughts in her mind, letting the memories of the past few events play out in her head, while hoping to find her peace of mind again. It was hard however, especially considering that she didn’t know what to make of it all.
With Rhyn at least, things were pretty straightforward. The snowleopard was the silent time, not brooding, but merely watching, and she could always be counted on, which Soneya very much appreciated. The same was true for Kaevad; he would do anything to protect both of the women, even let himself lose control over his dragon. The thought thereof made Soneya shudder. The dragon was fierce and vicious, but it acted according to its nature. Should anyone be denied following their instincts and their very being?
Shaking her head, Soneya walked onwards a little longer. The problem was not simply that she was afraid that the dragon would lash out at the wrong time, the problem was also that she was afraid that neither her nor Rhyn would be around to prevent it from happening sometime in the future. It had worked in the village just now, but would it always? Would their mere presence be enough to restrain the beast?
Another thing was that she felt things around Kaevad she had never felt before. She neither knew what they were nor did she know what to make of them; in turn she didn’t know how to act upon them – or not – and she faced a similar problem when the dragon shifter fell into a brooding mood.
Realising all of a sudden that it was already growing dark, Soneya turned around to head back to the cave. At least she wanted to be close by when night fell fully without necessarily having to go inside yet. It all depended on whether she was ready to or not. What would they think of her anyway for leaving like that? Childish, most likely.
Just as she was about to step her pace up into a run because sundown really was coming a lot quicker than she had expected, a sob reached her ear. Instantly, Soneya halted in her steps. Had she heard right? There it was, another sob.
Turning into the direction the sound had come from, the young woman made her way carefully closer, wondering who it was and what was wrong. As per usual, the need to help was stronger than her senses for survival.
The sobs sounded closer with every step she took and Soneya eagerly moved onwards until she came upon a sort of clearing – which was when she realised she had to be in a part of the woods that were stretching out from behind the shifter village. An uneasy feeling spread through her stomach but it was too late. Hateful eyes were suddenly staring at her, brimful with tears, which were also streaking down the long-haired girl’s face. “You!” the brunette hissed. “How dare you show your face here again!”
The last person Soneya had wanted to stumble upon was the girl who had severely fallen for Kaevad within the blink of an eye.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Rhyn listened carefully, even as she settled in front of Kaevad. Slowly, as he carefully untangled the few matts she had garnered and brushed dirt from her, she began to purr. Arching into the strokes, part of her was glad that, unlike her silent cousins that were not shifters, she could purr. They did not, and often, neither did she. But it was a good way to express happiness. As night began to fall though, she strained her ears, listening for any sound of Soneya's return.
Hearing none, she stopped her purr, her coat shining silver thanks to the dragon-shifter's attentions. There was a small pile of white fur from her shedding, which she merely tossed int the flame without thought. It would smell like burning hair, but it would swiftly dissipate away. The sun was down almost, and she rose to her feet, worried now that Soneya had not returned.
"Stay here. If she returns before I find her, she shouldn't come back to an empty camp." Matter of fact, the shifter slid into her feline shape fully, and loped into the night. She didn't bother to hide her gleaming fur. Nose close to the ground, she searched out Soneya's scent, and finding it, followed. It was difficult, sorting through all of the scents that threatened to clog her nose.
Rhyn sighed slightly. She would likely need more debris brushed from her by the time she returned. Perhaps Kaevad would do her the favor once again. Ears flicked forward at the thought. The large man had done a very nice job of it, for sure. Her eyes worried though, as the trail turned, and led back towards the village. Had Soneya thought to go back?

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
When Rhyn left, Kaevad couldn't stop the irritation rising. He stood and paced... and paced... and paced some more. He stepped outside of the camp sightly to punch a boulder when his fury rose, and slid back, shaking his hand as his temper cooled. Where WERE they!? Everything in him screamed something was wrong - very wrong. Not necessarily mortally wrong but- Go.Go. they spoke at the same time and Kaevad turned his head, tail flicking. Rhyn would think him foolish but- hopefully she could respect instincts and gut feelings. He turned and quickly scrawled a note in the ground for Soneya - right by the fire so she could read it: "Gone to find you, be back soon. Stay put please ~K." That done he stepped from the cave and took to the air.
He flew low enough he could see through the trees, spotting Rhyn easily, but continued on, in the same direction she was headed. She had Soneya's scent, he was sure of it - and it was headed to the village, which wasn't good. Even if a handful of people there liked her... well, she'd taken one very ideal candidate off the market in their eyes, something that wasn't acceptable in this area- there!
In a clearing he saw a girl standing from a crouch, rage seeming to vibrate every inch of her... it was the blonde woman that had given her heart like a fool. Who was she- Soneya. His heart stopped. Defenseless Soneya. Changers thrice fucking damn him and his stupid, stupid, STUPID need to coddle and protect this fucking woman! He beat his wings harder, faster, trying to get to her before the girl could do anything stupid.
He landed with a harsh slap of earth against scale, and a snarl of protective rage. He'd landed directly between the two, his tail curling around Soneya protectively his his head bowed to show his horns and give him a far more intimidating appearance. "Child, you seek to do something very stupid, I'll warn you against it. I will not allow anyone else to touch my mate unpunished." His voice was a hiss, low dangerous and controlled. Almost golden eyes peered back at Soneya a moment later. "Are you alright love? You worried Rhyn and I sick." His tone was gentler, though the steel of restraint was still there. She could have gotten killed, should she have ran into the wrong villager... he'd gotten lucky.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Well this was really not the situation Soneya had hoped for when she had wanted to be left in peace for a bit to clear her head. Really not. She had stared back at the girl with a fairly calm expression, waiting a long time before she had just been about to open her mouth to speak, when the unmistakable sound of beating wings had reached both their ears. Neither of the girls had taken away her eyes of the other though.
With Kaevad’s tail now suddenly curled around her and the protective snarl thrown into the girl’s face, Soneya almost smiled, although at the same time she wanted to roll her eyes. This dragon was a mystery to her, he really was. Snippy when she didn’t do what he wanted or expected her to do, but agitated as soon as she was out of his eyesight. If she didn’t know any better, she would think that...
And that seemed to be exactly the problem. The pretence of the three of them being in a sort of relation didn’t seem to have affected the girl very much but now in the face of an angry dragon protecting his mate, she seemed to waver a little, confusion and doubt in her eyes. Anger and hatred overruled any other emotions however, and she snarled in return: “Get out of my way! This is between me and her.”
Soneya looked back at Kaevad, uncomprehending where her composure came from, and said: “I’m alright, don’t worry.” She knew that Rhyn was not far off and that the snowleopard was more likely to understand the reason behind what she was about to do.
Taking a few steps towards the hissing girl, Soneya laid a gentle hand on Kaevad’s cheek before facing her foe. “So apparently this is between you and me. Go on then, what is it you have to say to me? Tell me what it is that makes you loathe me so profoundly.” The reply was instantaneous: “You’re not one of us! You are filth! You are less than the dirt we tread on! Worthless piece of shit! You have no right to lay claim to a potential mate of ours!”
“So you’re saying the fact that I’m not insulting people who have helped my own people and generally don’t seem ungrateful for what others do for me, makes me a lowlife in your eyes.” She knew that she was not going to last against the girl in a proper fight, but she also knew that she had to stand up to her. If she let Kaevad or Rhyn defend her once again, she wasn’t going to be accepted by these shifters, ever. Not that she was very interested in coming back to this place but it seemed to her that these villagers had a little something to learn in terms of attitude, and Kaevad’s words had not been lost on her – despite the fact that she had only really listened to them when he had repeated them during their short flight.
“You think you’re so much better than me? Then prove it!”
Okay, maybe that had been the wrong way of going about it, but the words were out now and it was too late to take them back. All she could do now was hope that it would all end for the best.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Rhyn's ears perked up as Kaevad flew over her and with a snarl of frustration, the cat sped into a sprint. She arrived onto the scene even as the young village girl snarled out a reply as Soneya stepped forward, challenging the other to prove what made her better. The feline stood, shifting so that she was comfortable on two feet as she stalked forward, her stormy fur standing out against the shadows of the night.
She came up next to Kaevad, understanding that Soneya felt the need to prove that she could stand on her own, but not caring. "Idiotic. Posturing. Are like bucks in breeding season, only female!" Her mutter was low as she came up to Kaevad's head. "And you can stay right there. Idiot again. Told you to stay at cave. Can't listen. How can I take care of her if you won't stay safe yourself?" She growled and made sure he stayed put, letting Soneya step away from them. It was idiotic, but the girl needed to learn. Let her get a few scrapes for her stupidity. The irritation was clear on Rhyn's face though. "Let her get some bruises. She has challenged another. If she cannot fight, she loses status. Her own foolishness has led to this. You will not step in unless she is in true danger."
The cat turned to watch what would happen.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Kaevad had no intentions of helping her in the first place, though since Rhyn basically ordered him, he didn't like it. He even moved away from Soneya just enough to give her space if she needed, flopping on the ground like a old, patient dog. She wanted to play with the big girls, she could be his guest.there was a line between bravery and stupidity after all...
What the girl did next though... that concerned him. She hunched a moment before wings shot from her back and she began to grow at the rate Kaevad would if he- no... no no... He was on his 4's now, skin rippling painfully as he fought back the need to shift into the larger version of what stood before him. A dragoness... but that... that was impossible. No one else could have had access to a dragon tooth - certainly not one as young as her-!
He inhaled, preparing a fire, only to stop, as realization sank in. Ahhh... that tricky minx...
"You see? Weak, mortal and useless next to me!" The dragoness snarled, her scaly face bowed to look Soneya in the eye. "What do you have to offer him, worm?"

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Soneya had to admit, as soon as Rhyn’s words sunk in and when Kaevad didn’t even object, she knew she was in trouble. But, she had to learn. She really had to, one way or another. Of course, she’d chosen the hard way, if not to say the most foolish way she could have possibly thought of, but at least she had finally had the guts to stand up for herself.
Besides, she had never had the intention of actually fighting the girl, she had merely wanted to lure her out of her hiding place. Something had had to have been special about her, why else would she have made such a fuss?
Though when the girl portrayed just what kind of an ass she had up her sleeve, Soneya’s jaws dropped. A dragon?!
Nevertheless, she quickly composed herself and stared back into the dragon eye in front of her, ignoring the nerves bunching up in every spot in her body. “Do you think a relationship would ever solely be based on how strong the other person is? You may have far more to offer than me where shapeshifting is concerned, but do you really believe that is ever going to be enough to win over someone’s heart? Do you really believe there is nothing more to love than being equal in physical strength? Equal in longevity? I may not be able to offer him companionship for all of his long life and yes, I may be fragile, but I can offer him something you cannot. The understanding of what it means to truly be human, to be able to trust someone and to appreciate the strength and support they can offer; what it means to have mutual respect one before the other. No matter how suitable others think the pairing is. Being fragile doesn’t equal being weak.”
