"Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
"Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Free days were far too rare. In fact, they were so rare that Soneya generally spent a lot of the day sleeping and trying to relax after a rough few days of work. Today however, the weather was too good to remain anywhere inside or near her parents, they were in a bad mood as every year on the day her grandfather died. She was not inclined to care about their feelings however. She was going to spend this day grieving in her own way. Away from her parents.
It had been a long time since Soneya had been outside of Marn and even though she was a little scared of what might happen to her, the trees of the forest were calling to her and this time she heeded their call.
The coolness that greeted her amongst the trees was a blessing. Like so many days this week, Soneya was suffering from a slight, lingering headache but nothing too strong, nothing she couldn’t handle.
Soft moss and leaves were padding her path as she was slandering along aimlessly. She did not have a clue as to where she was headed but she was enjoying the walk very much. It was calm, peaceful and felt very relaxing to both her head and her mind.
That was until suddenly there was a slithering and hissing she did not quite know where to place. It sounded frightening in any case and Soneya immediately began backing up, trying to get away from the noise. However, it was no use, because as soon as she had taken a couple of steps, it was not just one but two or even more creatures hissing at her from different directions. Awfully close, too!
No matter where she turned, there were eyes glaring at her, tongues flitting out and hissing at her threateningly and it was enough to bring her close to a panic. She was just a normal little girl without any means of defence.
Sweating and shaking in fear, Soneya didn’t know what else to do and began yelling at the top of her lungs: “Help! Somebody help! Help me!”

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
The woods around Marn were vastly different from the harsh clime that Rhyn'aura was used to. She kept her cloak around her shoulders mainly to help her blend in with the area around her, her stocky, silver-furred form not meant to blend well with the browns and greens of the lowland forests. Where is all the snow?! She sighed to herself, actually quite warm. Part of her debated sliding into her human form, but her feline head shook. She had no clothing. And while she may not care at all, most people seemed to care quite a bit. She was hardly decent to them when covered in fur, let alone when stark naked and only skin.
Her thick tail flicked behind her and her ears perked up as a scream came through. A very human scream. The cry for help, desperate and sounding like a girl, threw her into action before she even began her usual thought process. She launched towards the sound, falling onto all fours as her form shifted closer to it's fully snow-leopard shape. Despite the hampering cloak she wore, she ran at full speed, managing to not trip over the cloth.
Heavy paws skidded to a halt in the loam of the forest floor as she came upon the scene from the outside. The young woman in the center of the threatening snakes was weaponless and, as far as Rhyn could tell, from Marn stock. With a shrug, she flowed smoothly into her half-form, and snarled silently as she threw herself at one of the snakes, claws out and teeth descending towards it's head.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
He moved through the forest, breathing in its scent and life. So much life, so much peace. Disgusting... burn it... the dragon hissed even as the boy whimpered in protest. The peace, naturally, was shattered with a scream. A call for help, interesting. We have to help her! For once, Kaevad had to agree, after all, anyone who was pathetic enough to beg for help, obviously needed it. And so he lunged through the woods, breathing even, until he happened upon the cat-woman and the lass. Damsels... Changers thrice damn- he snorted. Snakes. Of course they were snakes.
And so he stalked forward, pushing his feet into that of a dragon's, growling at the pangs. Claws, scaly and preventible, stepped easily on the reptiles as he made his way over to the damsels. The cat was first, his claws grabbing her scruff carefully and hauling her over his shoulder, the second lass a quick second, jerking her close quickly so that she sat on his arm. Grunting slightly, he turned and moved away from the reptiles, ignoring the fangs that sought to find a weakness in his scales even as others wisely slithered away.
"Are you two harmed?" He rumbled as he moved away to a safer spot, kicking a persistent snake away.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
When suddenly a white-furred something came rushing towards her, Soneya screamed even more and tumbled backwards, stumbling over a protruding root and crashed to the ground, barely a handbreadth away from the gaping maw of a snake. What the hell was going on here?! Wanting to get away as quickly as possible, she was just about to actually crawl out of reach when suddenly she felt she was grabbed off the ground.
Screaming again, she fought the hold of whoever had grabbed her only to end up sitting on a... shoulder? What the...? I lost my mind, I’m not thinking clearly. That has to be it. This isn’t really happening. I am just imagining things!
However, the arm underneath her posterior felt extraordinarily real and when a male voice reached her ears from a close proximity, she noticed that she was in fact not dreaming but that this was indeed quite real.
“What just happened?" she asked in a fear-stricken voice, completely ignoring the stranger's question. "Who are you? Where did you come from?” The white-furred thing she had seen arrive, though she still was nowhere nearer in understanding what on earth that was, but this being – was it a man or was it a monster? – she had not even seen, despite the enormous size. And the claws!
Staring at the claws and scales, Soneya felt as though she might completely lose her grip on reality. Her vision started fading into blackness before she quickly shook her head and forced herself to focus. This could not be real. Pinching herself hard, she was hoping it would lead to her waking up but when she opened her eyes again and looked around, the two were still very much there. “Why am I dreaming with my eyes open?!”

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
She ignored the second scream from the girl, focused mostly on the very nasty taste of snake blood in her mouth. Ears twitched back as she heard steps coming from another direction. They dug into the loam of the forest and then a clawed hand curled into her scruff. The claws tapped the bundle of nerves in her loose skin. Her jaw clenched as her body reacted instinctively. Just like a kitten, she went limp in the man's clawed hand, allowing him to sling her over his shoulder without problem.
Seeing the prudence of it, she didn't struggle until he had stepped out of the circle of snakes, and then she pushed at his arm and shoulders, twisting to get away from his grip. Her voice was nothing but a rough growl as she spat out the dead snake. "Am fine. Appreciate being grabbed not!" Her fur was fluffed out as she stood on her own power, ears sideways as her pale golden eyes took in both the stranger and the young woman who was now dissolving into a panic attack.
Roughly, she licked the blood from her jaws, the movement very feline, like the snow-leopards she had grown up observing, before she stepped towards the young woman, claws sheathed. Her tolerance for nonsense was not high. Her voice was soft though, paw-like hands reaching out. No longer a growl, her voice was thickly accented. "Calm, kitling. Not dreaming." She made a soft huffing sound in her throat. "Snakes attacked you. Heard you call. Came to help." The sentences were short, curt, but kind in tone. Her pale eyes turned towards the clawed and scaled man "He came after. Grabbed us both."
Cocking her head sideways towards one side, she looked at Kaevad and snorted. "Not know who he is. I am Rhyn'aura. From the north."

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
The furred one who smelled of the cold worked her way free, much to Kaevad's entertainment. He stood stock still, keeping the little woman on his arm even as the cat tried to soothe her. Kaleb gently shifted the upset human so he was cradling her, ignoring the dragon's hissing. Eat her heart, can't you smell that blood? All that life... She's pretty... The human observed, and Kaevad couldn't help but to agree.
"Calm yeself, little woman, we mean ye no harm. I am known as Kaevad." He spoke slowly, carefully, trying to make sure they could understand him. "I came when I heard ye screaming. Please be calm." He tried the tone of voice that had soothed his love so many years ago. "I truly mean ye no harm. Either of you." He looked back up to the cat calmly, meeting golden with greenish-blue.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Blood. There was blood on the animal’s jaw. And it was right next to her. It wasn’t as though Soneya had a problem with blood. Being a housekeeper she had to deal with a lot of various things and working on smaller wounds counted amongst those. But it was different to see a half-cat lick it off its overly large teeth.
Neither of the two seemed to intend any harm however and Soneya was slowly starting to calm herself. Their voices and sentence structures may be a little different from hers but their tone was rather comforting. “Yes, I need to calm down, you’re right,” she finally acquiesced, feeling a little sheepish for her behaviour. “Thank you. Both of you. You saved my life. I am very grateful.”
Soneya was shifted by the man and cradled much more comfortable in his arms. She wasn’t quite sure what to make of it but in her rather shaken state, she was glad for the support. Her head was pounding, as was her heart and she couldn’t quite understand why a bunch of snakes had attacked her.
“I thought snakes didn’t do that sort of thing? Why did they attack me?”
Finally having a grip on herself, she introduced herself as well, after the other two already had a while ago. “My name is Soneya. Really, I appreciate you coming to my aid. I don’t know how to repay such a kindness!” It was hard to speak through the thickness of her skull but she managed to utter the words, trying to focus her gaze on her surroundings and most importantly on her two rescuers, both of which seem a little odd. She had seen white fur, had she not? But it was a woman’s voice talking to her nonetheless. Weird.
“Lucky you were both close by,” Soneya whispered as she let herself drift even deeper into the embrace, feeling as though much of her energy had left her. In addition, there was something incredibly comforting in being held in someone’s protective arms. It was a sensation she was not used to. Her parents were not into displaying their feelings through gestures such as hugs.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Her eyes stayed on Kaevad, even though her ears twisted in a manner that made it clear she was paying attention to Soneya. Her jaw dropped slightly in an open-mouthed grin. Good, the woman was calming down. She tilted her head slightly, observing the half-shifted dragon. She didn't know what she was searching for, but sensed no danger in particular from the man, no hidden malice. So her gaze finally turned away from him and she looked upon the girl in his arms instead.
Wrinkling her nose, she licked her teeth again, and spat to the side. "Snakes. Nasty." Cautiously, she looked closer at Soneya and spoke once more. "Soneya?" Her name was carefully pronounced, but even so, sounded rich because of the thick accent. "Think she is in shock." She stated to Kaevad, and shrugged slightly, her fur beginning to flatten out once more, though it was easy to see that it was a plush coat.
"Snakes... attack people little, yes?" She seemed to struggle to put the sentence together, missing words, but making sure that her meaning was clear.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
He nodded absently at the cat. "Nay, snakes avoid humans in most cases. I am led to believe the little woman walked across a breeding area, though this is uncommon..." Keaved swivelled his head to look back at the offending area before looking back at the cat, only to look to the sky when he scented water. "The sky shall weep soon." he commented, looking down again. "I have found shelter within a cave for the time being, we shall go there for shelter from the storm, aye?"
Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Wait, wait. Storm? What was he talking about? Soneya’s brain finally snapped back into some sort of clearer reality and that was when she realised just how weird it all really had been. “A snake breeding ground? How is that even possible?” she asked, more to herself than to anyone in particular but she couldn’t see any other logical explanation herself. She wasn’t very knowledgeable on snakes though but she figured that this had not been normal behaviour.
“How do you know there is a storm coming?” she asked but the question had not even been out yet when her headache grew worse, a regular occurrence for when a storm was approaching. “I can’t stay with you. I have to go home. I have to go.” The words were mumbled more than properly spoken as she tried to force herself to keep the focus she had only recently gained.
All of a sudden, it seemed like a few puzzle pieces in her brain switched into place and she struggled against Keaved’s hold, noticing just how very inhuman he looked. “Who are you people? What are you people?!” The scales, the claws, the fur. Animals speaking?! Where was she?
As if on cue, the first drop suddenly landed on her forehead while she was still securely tugged away in Keaved’s arms. Cursing, she struggled a little against the hold but to no avail. She never had been strong and as her nerves were still on edge and the shock was still sitting in her bones, there wasn’t much going on than a mere few kicks.
She should calm herself though. These people had just rescued her. Why would they do her harm now? They could have just let her to the snakes in the first place and go about their own business without giving her as much as a second thought. “You said you had a cave?” Soneya asked shyly as she had her temper somewhat under control again. Spending her time outside in a storm had not really been part of her plan, so was glad for the offered shelter.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
The girl was struggling and panicking again. Rhyn's ears flattened. Her own nose scented rain on the way, though Kaevad's prediction said it would be sooner rather than later. The first drops scattered about not moments later, stilling Soneya's struggles and helping her calm. The snow-leopard woman flipped the hood of her cloak up. Rain. Abysmal thing that it is. Snow is so much better. It does soak my fur like this lowland rain. She shrugged herself fully under the cloth folds and then looked to Kaevad.
"Lead the way, lizard-man." Her murmur was soft. "I think we will be better out of rain. Kitling will be able to return home after rain stops." There was a tone of dislike in her voice for the rain that matched any cat's.
As she waited for Kaevad to lead the way, she looked at Soneya, and wrinkled her nose. "We explain when we are in dry place, yes?"

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
She struggled a moment, panicking, but Kaevad refused to lower her, knowing the next step she'd take even before she did. T'was the benefit of being over 200 years old... and so he waited for her fit to pass. Sure enough, as the rain began to fall, she calmed, even curling closer to him. He turned to the cat when she addressed him, his goldening eyes matching her own. He nodded before smiling tightly. "I'm no lizard." he corrected before he took a deep breath and grit his teeth hard as he closed his eyes and spread his wings. He hated the pain, Changers yes, but the little woman would get sick if she got wet... and he needed all the light exposure he could get. He shuddered as he flicked his wings and couldn't stop the groan.
"Fuckin' hate doing that." he hissed to himself, "I'm a dragon." he added, straitening from his slight bend. He'd been curling in pain, much to his aggravation, but couldn't be helped now. Up came one of the wings, much as an arm would, to hover over his head, spreading slightly so the membrane would shield both him and the woman. After a moment he gestured the cat over, raising his second wing well over her head. Once she moved to him, he curled it around her, so as to keep her warm and dry while keeping their mobility mostly unlimited. That done, he led the way.
He kept to the winder area's, mostly paths and game trails, though this made the rain now pouring down, much more of a pain. Water drizzled off his wings, though he, the cat and the girl remained dry, he still felt the chill. The dragon kept hissing about eating their hearts and drinking their hot blood, the human simply remained silent, apparently entranced by the small woman. How he missed having a heart... or really caring much for the opposite sex. But after the violent deaths of two of his beloveds, he didn't think he could survive a third. Shaking himself free of the thoughts, he drew them into the cave, shaking his wings as the entered.
Sliding inside he set the girl down on his bed of pelts, moving away to the fire pit once he was sure she was comfortable. Breathing in, and knowing this would burn, Kaevad exhaled sharply, breathing fire into the wood to start it. Quickly he moved back and into the rain, tilting his face up and opening his mouth to let the water sooth his throat and tongue.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
Wings? He can grow wings?! Soneya ripped open her eyes and stared at the unfolding membranes in an equal measure of horror and fascination. Never in her life had she seen such a thing and it was just as fantastic as it was terrifying!
Deep down in her brain, something stirred and tried to break through the fog of the headache and this extraordinary situation, something that tried to remind her that this should not be acceptable, under no circumstances, but the spark soon died again as Soneya was more preoccupied with snuggling comfortably back into his arms as the rain began to thicken and his wings spread over the three of them in a sort of protective shield.
As soon as they entered into the cave, Soneya felt both less chilly being out of the rain and more insecure again. She was in his den now. His house, his rules, and she wasn’t quite sure whether she liked that. After all, she had no means of protecting herself. Then again, he had just rescued not only her but also sheltered both her and the other woman from the rain, why would he want to attack her in any way now?
The same thoughts kept turning in circles in her mind and it was starting to make her dizzy. She almost missed Kaevad breathing fire as she wanted to do nothing more than settle deeply into his pile of furs and forget everything. But the sudden roaring of flames snapped her attention back onto the current situation and Soneya regarded the odd man curiously. She may be afraid of what he could possibly do to her but he was visibly in pain.
Stalking after him as he went to the entrance of the cave to soothe the apparent burning sensation in his mouth, she quietly stated: “You’re in pain.” It was stating the obvious no doubt but Soneya really disliked seeing anyone in pain and she always felt the need to do something about it, though in this case, she had no idea what she could possibly do. Helpless in the face of his pain, she turned to the woman. “Is there anything we can do to help him?”

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
She watched the man grow wings from his back, curling in pain with it. Strange. I never feel pain when I shift... but perhaps he is cursed and not a born shifter as I am. Her ears flattened sideways as he beckoned her close, but standing underneath a strange dragon-wing was better than getting wet. The stocky, feline woman slid close to the man, so that his wing easily curled around her, but she made sure that she did not touch him. She remained silent as they walked, not even commenting on his correction of what he was.
They reached the cave and she stepped away from Kaevad as he moved to set the girl down on the furs that must make up his bed. Colorless eyes glanced about. There were the furs, and the firepit, but not too much else. The roar of flames made her swiftly turn to look, and she caught the wood crackling and Kaevad stepping out into the rain, opening his mouth to the sky.
Rhyn assumed that the man had done such things before, and knew the consequences of his own actions. Soneya got up to walk over to him, but Rhyn stepped over to the fire to tend it and make sure that it was tended. Her ear turned towards the others as the girl asked her question. Pushing her cloak out of her way, off of her head and shoulders, she tilted her head and answered. "I do not know. He is shifter, like me. He knows to take care of himself." The heat of the fire was nice, and she found herself unclipping her cloak to spread it on the ground where she planned to sit. "You will be ok, yes, dragon man?" Thought Kaevad had introduced himself, she liked the way "dragon man" rolled from her tongue in her thick accent.

Re: "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?"
He closed his mouth and simply allowed the water to slid down his face and body. With the chill numbing him, Kaevad pulled his wings inside with a low groan, hissing as his feet shrunk and descaled. Shaking and breathing for a moment, Kaevad turned to the little woman, amusement glittering his ice-blue eyes. "I am well, young one, worry not. My pain is the curse I suffer for mistake I made long ago." He moved within the cave, stiff and and slow. He sighed as he sat by the fire, warming himself, ignoring the small rivets of water sliding down his skin from his soaked hair.
"If you wish to question me, children, you may." Kaevad rumbled, ignoring the dragon hissing deep within. We are alone... strike Kaevad, feast, taste their warm lifes blood.
