Special ability's and character flaws

Powers or Strengths
Specialized training
Aathane's foster father was an expert hunter and tracker and had taught Aathane from a young age to see the woodland realm for what it truly was. He has always had a strong affinity for the natural world. Though he knows no magic, ancient paths seem to make them selves know to Aathane as if he has walked them a thousand times.

Expert tracker
There are no two better people to find something in the Virdara Woods Than Aathane or his hermit father Hadrian and it is widely known to the people of shim.

Spirit walker
He excels in the Virdara woods. Where most will not venture for fear of ghost's and monsters. Aathane feels perfectly at home. For what ever reason the spirits of those woods leave him be.

Herbalist
He has a wide knowledge of plants and wildlife in the forest. He knows their healing and curative properties as well as the harmful ones.

Half Elven traits
Due to his half Elven heritage and his training he is lithe, quick and has very keen vision. He is strong and healthy from his long years living in the woods.

Weaknesses
He is half elven so he has no true place in ether society. He has had no formal martial training. Long years in the wilds have made him somewhat quiet and nervous in large settlements. In the wilds if he wants to disappear he can, but in a city he really sticks out.

History
Known Family

As a very powerful wizard he shows the form he wishes and he chooses to go about his daily life as a wised old man. He took Aathane under his care for his own reasons and raised the young half elf as his own. The two live together deep in the Virdara woods. Where most wont dare to tread. He keeps the evil that dwells there away from Aathane and has for some time. But for how much longer.....This is open for later story arch's if any.

History
He was known to few as “Hadrian's son”, fewer still as “Aathane”. He was raised in the care of a ranger, a man of the woods and close friend of his true father. Hadrian raised the half elf from a babe and under his tutelage, Aathane was trained in the ways of a forester, huntsman and tracker. His foster father never told him how he came to be in his care and Aathane never asked.

He was happy in his time with Hadrian; he was a good man and a wise teacher. Growing up in the dense woodland known as the Vidara was a simple life. They survived off the land, they hunted only what they could eat, and he was taught to always give back to the forest. And with that, the forest always provided.

Though to most these woods were a terror indeed. On the few trips he and his foster father did make into the small town of Shim to trade herbs they had collected in the forest, the towns people would give him and his father a wide berth and wider stares. He never understood why until he was much older.

No one ventured into those woods especially at night, not even the guardsmen. Stories told of spirits in the woods, they were haunted, and of gruesome monsters. Though Aathane had never seen anything of the sort, there were indeed parts of the woods that he was told never to venture into, but their grove and small hut was peaceful and safe.

Their home was a small wooden hovel overgrown with vines. But it was comfortable and quaint. It had three rooms, and a cellar outside in the back where they would store dried meats, hides, and various herbs. It wasn't much, but it was home.

The small town of Shim was not far away. That is where he and his father would do their trading, though they never stayed for long. He loved the chance to see others, to see the children at play, and hear the sounds of the town. When they did venture into the town of Shim, they would stay at the Red Chalice Inn. There was always music, good drink, and hot food. The chimes and tunes played there were magic in Aathane's ears. He would sit and listen for as long as he could and even longer after Hadrian had fallen asleep.

Years had passed peacefully enough and the boy had grown tall and into a man. And this was the norm for Aathane: on the change of the seasons they would travel to the town of Shim and trade their stores of herbs and hides. Hadrian had aged; he was already an old man when Aathane came into his care. But now he was able to make less and less trips with the half elf. He would stay behind and read old books and work making herbal remedies while the young man took their goods to Shim.

THIS IS HIS CURRENT HISTORY SO FAR. I WISH TO ADD SOME THINGS ABOUT HIS YOUNGER YEARS, BUT NOTHING MAJOR AT THE MOMENT.

Hi and welcome to Thar. We spoke in chat a little bit and I'm glad you decided what kind of character you wanted to write.

I gather from your application that you have this impression of the site as something it's really not. It's not a combination of Tolkein's universe and Dungeons and Dragons. You use some words that sound like they might be borrowed from Tolkein, and while it's not like it's against the rules to use authors as inspiration, words like "Hathelas" are a little bit too close for comfort, so you might want to change them up if they're that close.

You don't need a long equipment list. What if those things move around? Surely he doesn't wear the same set of clothes every day.. one hopes...
Anyway, just describe things he might be wearing in your appearance and get rid of those sections. The only possessions we need to know about are things like his house, his horse, his money, and his weapons.

I'd like to see the weaknesses/flaws expanded on. Half-elves aren't out of place in Thar Shaddin. Marn and Shim both have about a quarter of their population as half-elves and they're fairly well integrated. The elves here are not high fantasy elves, so they're not as mysterious or mystical as Tolkien's elves, they just live longer, are better with their hands and eyes, and tend to have a greater affinity to magic. I would play more on how he might be quiet and nervous because he doesn't spend much time around people. I can't imagine he'd know how to act around women, for instance.

I think you think the Virdara woods are a lot bigger than they are. That's probably our fault because the setting description is pretty short, but the walk between the deepest part of the woods and Shim is still probably around three hours. I have trouble believing that there are still areas of the woods Aathane hasn't been too because they're too dangerous, simply because the size of the woods aren't big enough. With a riding horse like his, it'd be even shorter. The woods are dangerous but they're not large enough to warrant somebody who's specialized in tracking. I also don't think that all Shimians would know who Aathane is because your first character should start with very little renown. Some of them might know his father, however.

So you've got a few choices here. I'd suggest you either relocate Aathane and Hadrian as starting off somewhere else in the setting. You can invent some dense woodlands from them to hail from the west or some such, and maybe they're coming to Marn for a specific reason. You could also have them live in Shim instead of the woods, which would make more sense. They could be general bounty hunters and might just know woodlands particularly well. They might have studied the Virdara woods quite a lot on their spare time.

Sorry if my reply is long, I do like the writing and the idea of the character, I think you just need to wrap him in the setting a little better. If you've got questions you can hop into chat.
