Never Trust Appearances

Safyra wrapped her cloak tighter around her as she shivered, hiding the stolen loaf of bread and chunk of cheese inside of her ragged shirt as she hurried along one of the streets that was covered in chunks of stone. The ruins were always a place that felt safer to her. Sure, the guards still patrolled through the area, as they did through all of Marn. And as they should! But there were fewer patrols through here, and it made them less likely to discover her. She knew that all shifters could go proclaim themselves, and they wouldn't be held, so long as they didn't shift inside the city, or where people could see them, at least. But she had never managed to gather up her courage. Which means I'm doubly a law-breaking citizen. They won't understand, either! I have to steal just to survive half the time, and the rest of the time I'm cold and hungry and scared... Ever since my family chased me out... She sulked off to the side into the shadows of a broken down ruin.

Dark eyes darted around, searching. There was nobody in sight. She dodged off into the building she was standing by. At least here she had walls that she could hide from wind with, even if there was not much of roofing left. Clutching at herself, Fyra stepped swiftly, feeling the itchiness that was a warning sign of her shifting. She took a deep breath to calm herself and tucked her slight body into a corner. Her back was against the side of an old staircase, her shoulder against a collapsing wall. But she had her back guarded.

Cautiously, she glanced around again, and then pulled out the small loaf of bread and her wedge of cheese. Her belt knife was pulled from under her cloak next, and cut into the loaf. The end-slice was her favorite anyways. She tucked the rest onto her lap and sliced into the cheese as well. Putting together the cheese with the bread left her with a pleasant mix of flavors. The food got tucked away under her cloak again, and she pulled her wool covering around her tightly, using a corner to clean her knife before sheathing it.

Her chewing had an odd pattern. Quickly, several movements would go by, and then she would pause, listening. It made her eat slower, taking several moments longer to get through a single bite. As the food hit her hungry stomach, she let out a sigh, tucking a dark strand of hair behind her ear, and running her fingers through the dirty blond strands. She was fully focused on her food for the moment, her lips turned upwards in a slight smile. Silently she sent up a prayer of thanks to Theogios for providing her with such bounty today. Stale though it was, it was more than she had had for three days. Her teeth slid through another bite, and she paused halfway. Had something paused near the entrance to her hiding building?

Kaleb had remained in the wood for longer than he could remember, scrounging up food with the help of a hunters ghost who taught him what was good to eat and not so good. Either way, after thanking the kind ghost, Kaleb left the wood, since the feeling of the gems in his pocket were starting to become rather troublesome. They'd stick in his side when he slept, they'd sway when he'd walk and thump against his side almost as if to say "OI! ASSHOLE! I'm still HERE!"

It was when he was trudging back to town, through the old graveyard (always a bad idea, Changers knew there were scores of ghosts there, not all of them nice) when he spotted someone flitting into an old building. Now, Kaleb couldn't tell if the being was alive or dead and just a ghost returning to its haunt, but it was getting late and he did need a place to crash, so eh, it worked. Silently he walked towards the building, pausing from time to time to acknowledge those ghosts who were delighted to see someone who could see and hear them.

Those who were decent told him of a young girl, someone who came here with food and to hide, someone like him. A thief, he figured, since no-one else in this Changers cursed place could see ghosts. Sighing to himself he ghosted up to the building, pausing to peer inside, his emerald eyes spotting not a small girl, but a rather tiny girl. A very tiny and terrified looking girl.

Holding his hands up in a gesture meant to be peaceful, Kaleb entered the building, smiling his mosy easy and charming smile.

"Hi there, it's okay, just looking for a place to sleep." Kaleb slowly backed towards the opposite wall, crumbling and rotten, and sat easily, still smiling easily. "I'm Kaleb," he called out easily after a small stretch of silence. "Who're you?"

Her hazel eyes locked onto the large figure that had entered her building, pressing herself into the wall, shrinking a little as her skin itched. Stop that! She closed her eyes tightly and willed herself to stay human. Thankfully, it worked. She opened her eyes back up and stared at the man as he gave her an easy smile, hands up in a gesture of peace. She almost didn't register the meaning of his words but as they did, she pushed back against the crumbling wall. Just another person looking to sleep. Doesn't he have a place to sleep? He looks well off enough. His lanky form looked filled out, as though his slenderness was because of his build, not because of not having enough to eat.

With that, she remembered the food in her hand, and shoved the rest of it into her mouth, chewing it well before swallowing it in a gulp. Her hands pulled under her cloak and she tucked the bread and cheese into her shirt. It would last her two days, if she was careful. If she didn't share...

His voice startled her from her thoughts and she jumped a little. Kaleb. She scrutinized him again, dark hair and green eyes attractive, a shadow of scruff along his cheeks. She twitched a little, her lips pulling first to one side then the other as she automatically raised her nose to see if she could catch a whiff of his scent from where she sat. All Fyra could smell were the ruins though, rotting wood and stone dust.

He asked a question. She reminded herself and swallowed, not sure if she wanted to answer. She shifted, moving from where she was sitting until she could lean against the crumbling staircase and a block of stone from one of the walls. It put her a little closer to Kaleb, her eyes wide. Her voice was soft, and she had to clear her throat before actually speaking loud enough for him to hear. "I... aghem... I'm Safyra Car-." She broke off and shook her head. "Just Safyra... or Fyra, if you like...not that it matters." She swallowed and seemed to shrink a little more, nervously rubbing her nose. "What're you doing here? You don't look like you're bad off enough to need a place to sleep out here..."

Timid little thing... Kaleb mused to himself, watching her size grow and shrink as though just simple breathing made her change sizes. Animalistic movements, sniffing the air, small movements... vaguely he wondered what kind of shifter she was. Kaleb had seen enough of them to know who was or wasn't a shift, but instantly his guard was up. He hated magic, period. Shifters weren't too bad, if they didn't set him on fire or turn him into a toad... Amyrea didn't like her though, though Kaleb notched it up to jealousy.

"Me? Nah, got no place to call home but the streets. I'm just good at what I do." Kaleb said with a casual wink. He'd seen her stuff her face with food, looking ravenous. Poor thing likely hadn't eaten in awhile. Shame really, Kaleb reflected as he eyed her discreetly, she really was a pretty little thing. He dug into his pocket and pulled out the dried venison he'd managed to snag from a hunters place and tossed the small pouch of it to the girl.

"Don't think just bread and cheese will do it for you, love." He drawled out. With that he moved to recline against a corner, clearly at ease. He didn't want to seem anxious to the girl, didn't want her thinking he was going to hurt her. Changers knew how many times he'd been in her spot, and knew just what she likely wanted most - safety, food and maybe a nice companion to take some of the worlds weight off their shoulders.

His wink made her smile in response, reminding her of one of the particularly cute shop-boys that she used to flirt with while bargaining for sugar or other baking goods. He had had dark hair as well. The memory allowed her to relax a little as she leaned on the block of stone, sighing slightly, and the itching of her skin stopped as her body resumed its normality. Inside her cloak, one hand slipped down her side, reassuring herself, as always, that her body retained the shape she had grown into. It was skinny, of course, much skinnier than she should be, but it was still her.

Fyra looked up sharply as Kaleb tossed something her way. The building they were in was rather small, but she still started to scoot backwards. The pouch landed in front of her and she stared at it for a moment until his voice clarified that it was food of some kind. She reached out to pick it up, and the meat- smelling pouch disappeared into her shirt. The first, tremulous bonds of trust were starting. He had offered her no harm, had introduced himself plainly, and now, had added a gift of food to her. It was something that anybody on the street would take advantage of. The young woman tilted her head and studied him from her place, not sure how close she dared to get to him, but part of her longing for the closeness or even just conversation that she hadn't had since her parents had kicked her out.

"Bread 'n' cheese is more than I've had for days... I reckon I'm lucky to have gotten that today... But thank you..." She fell into silence, feeling awkward. Her little used voice felt hoarse and rough, and she fiddled nervously with the chunk of black hair that fell into her face. She leaned into the rock she had chosen as her protection, unsure now what to say. Manners had been met, and that was more than what most people would ask of anybody living on the street.

With that test passed, Kaleb relaxed further and grinned at her. She wasn't a ghost after all, ghosts can't move solid objects. He eyed the girl, noting the shivers that wracked her body and contemplated offering to let her relax against him. The night wasn't going to get warmer after all and for all he knew, her animal half could be fish.

"Now, I don't want to seem forward love, but you come closer, the nights not gonna get any warmer." He let tje last part trail off as he relaxed, smiling winningly at the girl. Really the body heat wod be welcome.

He's really quite cute, even if he is a street-boy. He had relaxed even more, and was grinning at her. She was looking in a different direction, but it was in her peripheral vision. Shivering, she clutched at the wool cloak. It was thin, but it was all she had. Part of her debated changing. She had sometimes spent nights curled up as whatever animal it was that she was able to shift into. Her fur in that form kept her warm, so long as she stayed dry. Warmer than the wool cloak she had. The many-patched garment was growing thinner by the week. Her eyes turned towards him, subtly, glancing at him from under thick lashes. He looked strangely comfortable, leaning against the place he had chosen. He looked healthy, and as though fear was not something that ran through his veins and mind on a constant basis.

Kaleb's voice made her look up once more. He had relaxed even more, and the grin that he had shot her was contagious. She felt heat rising into her cheeks, blushing under his bright gaze. Fyra blinked and blinked again. Did he call me love? She remembered that he had called her the same thing earlier, and shrugged it off. It was probably how he addressed every lady. With a winning smile like the one he was giving her, he probably got away with it too.

She studied him though. His offer to share warmth was tempting. But the last man who had made an offer like that had wanted more than just heat. Her hand slipped to her knife, and she pursed her lips as she thought. It was his smile that both won her over and made her cautious. She wanted to trust him, but that charmer's smile was something she had encountered before. She rose to her feet, stepping towards him slowly. One hand brushed hair from her face and she moved slowly until she was staring down at the man who had intruded upon her hide out. Pausing for a moment, she looked at him and felt small. Shee was always small.

With a grunt, she sat down next to him. "You try anything and I'll stick a knife in your ribs." She growled, still roughly four inches away from him. She tugged the cloak around her tighter, her body continuing to shiver.

Kaleb had been surprised when she moved closer, those sharp eyes of hers wary. Kaleb turned his head to look at her fully, clearly shocked. He chuckled and lifted an arm, gently beckoning her over.

"I won't try anything you don't want, love, relax. I may be a street kid, and a thief, but I've got some morals. Now come here before you freeze to death." Kaleb was honestly amused by the girl and suddenly he was launched back into the days when he was a Hawk. His eyes softened slightly.

"Look, I dunno what ass hurt you, but I used to be in a small gang of thieves, we looked out for each other. I'm not about to rape you." He said bluntly, though with good humor. Amyrea sputtered, then cursed out the girl for thinking such things, as if her love could do such a heinous thing! Kaleb fought the urge to roll his eyes as he waited for the girl patiently, arm still raised enough for her to slip under.

Still cautious of his intentions, she hesitated as he raised his arm and urged her to curl up next to him. Dark eyes focused on his face, still not trusting. Her shoulders dropped a little though, a single step towards the relaxation. She wanted to trust him, but Fyra was a cautious woman, now with her experience in the harsher side of the city life. She met his gaze and noted how his green eyes softened. It encouraged her a little, but she still couldn't quite move.

The mixture of his blunt words with the gentle quirk of his lips broke past her icy shell of caution. A hollow laugh came forth from her throat and she scooted the distance, ducking under his arm and leaning against his side. A deep breath, and she sighed. That heat. Warmth. The warmth of another person on a cold night. It was welcome, even though by normal standards the night was not super cold. But she knew her starving body could hardly keep warm when she wasn't able to get enough food. She wasn't sure how she would make it through another winter. Maybe go and start working as a barmaid... But she knew that wouldn't work. She was too timid by far.

Her voice was quiet. "Nobody ever hurt me. S'just... folk's've tried. Figure...what reason have you got to look out for me at all? You don't know me..." She pushed against him a little warmth seeping through to her skin and inwards.

The temptation to just pull her flush against him and get some more heat into her almost overwhelmed Kaleb for a moment when she felt her chilled body press against his. Changers above, how the hell had she lasted this long? Kaleb shifted slightly to grab the cloak he'd had and had folded as a pillow. Grabbing it now he wrapped it around the both of them, being sure to keep her with the warmest bits, concern coloring his eyes.

"I may not know you, but does that really matter? You seem like a nice girl for all your interesting character traits." Again Kaleb winked before pulling her as close as he dared, trying desperately to warm the poor creature up.

"So," he asked casually, as a means of conversation, "what's your animal half? I'd guess something small and rodent-like from how you've been acting and shrinking and what." He smiled down warmly at her, completely and utterly calm.

He pulled out a cloak that she hadn't seen, tugging it around the two of them. She ducked down a little, clutching her own threadbare cloak around herself and fighting down the fear of his arms encircling her as he pulled his cloak into place. Her shivers were quieting, barely, and she didn't see the concern in his eyes, looking down at the ground in front of him. Relax...if he tries anything you can always shift and get away... You're already cursed, Theogios can't blame you for using it to keep yourself alive.

She seemed a nice enough girl. Ha. An obviously sarcastic snort came out in response. interesting traits that he knows nothing about. Flatterer. Fyra shuddered, partly from shivering, partly from a small sense of fear.

And then his next words made her freeze all movement, even her shivers, for a single moment, in which wide, fear-filled eyes turned up towards him. Then the cold got to her once again, and she shivered, even as she pulled away from him. How can he be so calm? He can't be serious! She pushed against his arms, ducking out of the embrace and trying to detangle herself from his cloak. "You must have me mistaken for someone...thing, else. I'm not sure what you're talking about." She couldn't find the blasted way out of his cloak! Her eyes saw his warm smile, but it didn't stop her at all. Was he amused by the fact that her soul was probably cursed, just like her parents believed? Fyra cursed, her skin itching a little as she tried to keep calm.

His eyes widened as she tried to get away. "Woah woah woah, hang in there, love, didn't mean to upset you! You just act like a couple shifters I know, nothing wrong with that." He managed a grin. "Hell some of the nicest ghosts I talk with are shifters." Shit. He said that out loud. Wincing at himself he loosened his grip and attempted to help the girl disentangle herself from him.

"Here, I'm sorry I upset you." He managed as he worked her free. "Take my cloak, it'll keep you warmer at least." He felt bad, his eyes reflected the guilt. Changers he was like an open book tonight. He blamed it on the emotional exhaustion. He just didn't want to act today.

She paused as he mentioned something about ghosts and shifters, but continued to scoot away from him, and it was easier, since he was helping her. What? He's actually letting me go?! Her eyes showed her shock, and she decided to respond to the only things she had clearly made out of his speech. "Well, how would you act if you were as small as me and out on the streets? There's only so much one can do before reverting to what little instinct is left after civilization!" She had avoided his gaze, shivering violently again as offered his cloak.

Her hands started to reach out, but she pulled back, meeting his eyes and seeing the guilt there. He may be better off than her, but it would get colder before it got warmer, and nobody would find it pleasant to be out in the open. She grumbled softly. "It's alright... I suppose... " She shifted a little, as though to move back towards him, but not sure now. The ground was cold, and her body shuddered as shivers ran through her again. She wanted that warmth again. With a bit of a grumbling sound again, she scooted towards him. "Don't let me take your cloak from you. It feels like it'll get bitter cold tonight."

"Same as you, I guess. Actually, I have acted just like you." Kaleb responded, staring off into space as he remembered before shaking his head to clear his thoughts. He looked back down to her, watching her frame quake and frowned.

"Look love, I give you my word, if it means anything anymore, that I won't bloody hurt you. Now get over here and get warm." He gestured, clearly unamused with the girl now. "I know I'm likely being forward, and blah blah blah, but I can manage the cold. You look like you're gonna freeze to death before the night's out. I don't need another spirit haunting me, Amyrea's enough." He'd already said he saw ghosts and she'd brushed it off, so what the hell, right?

She knew it. Her actions were not that odd! and that meant her shifter couldn't have shown through so easily... right?

Shiver, shiver, and then he was scolding her. What? Yes, that was definitely a scold. He was irritated. Why?! Freeze to death?! She stiffened and glared at him. "I woudln't freeze to death! I can take care of myself just fine, thank you very much! I've survived out here this long, I hardly think i'm going to die by freezing now! But despite her protesting verbally, she crawled back over to him. "And what do you mean, another spirit haunting you?" She shifted as she settled into a sitting position again, her stomach starting to rumble, having swiftly digested the small amount she had given it. There was still bread and cheese left... she could share, she supposed.
