The Ale Star

Philo felt a warm flush in his cheeks and ears again. Yeah he would find an acting job that put him in a brothel. Well it did seem like a nice job and the perqs were very hard to beat.
Further warmed up by a drink or two he was disinclined to swat the devil off his shoulder.
He eyed the lady in question with a boyish smile. Then looked back to Francis. "You're sure it's all ok?"

"Is it okay...well, let's ask the lady herself...Rebecca, are you busy?"
Rebecca shook her head no.
"Do you find my partner Philo to be a pretty dashing fellow?"
"Yes," she answered softly, blushing a bit.
Francis couldn't help but chuckle. It was always funny to see one of the working girls behaving shyly. Most of the time it was part of their act, and others did it because it was just a part of their sweet nature. Rebecca had just joined the brothel and she hadn't had a man enjoy her
"Would you like to have a few more drinks with Mr. Philo and I and spend some time alone with him to 'welcome him' to his new home." Francis asked, he slyly dropped coins into the small purse she kept to her side for the customer's
Rebecca's eye's shone brighter it seemed.
"Of course...that is...if that's alright with Mr. Philo," she answered coyly.
Although no one worked for free, Francis knew that a few of the women let their favorite clients or men they felt close to have a few "free rides" and since he already liked the young lad so much he would help them out.
"What do you think, Mr. Philo? A beautiful young courtesan wants your attention, will you deny her that?"

"I wouldn't deny a young lady any such thing!" Philo said grandly, though some of it was the wine talking and some of it was the devil on his shoulder and the rest of it was the boy from a small town who thought he had seen far too many pretty ladies tonight in variously provocative poses. It had gone on long enough.
He smiled again and slipped an arm around the girl. "A glass of wine, a pretty girl, and a beautiful evening, what more could any man ask for?"

Rebecca giggled like an innocent schoolgirl would. Francis could tell that she was already taking a liking to him. Many of the employees enjoyed tumbles. In fact, he and Mae sometimes took turns being the other's customer for a night. Nothing could be better than intimacy with someone else who sold their body for money.
"Let us go downstairs and we can have more wine and conversation. Then I'll leave you two to get better acquainted," Francis said, flashing them what he called his "devil smile"...the one he used to persuade anyone to do about anything.

Naru nodded and turned to Gimmel.
"Sir, if you would follow me please," he said politely. Gimmel laughed.
"Don't call me sir," he grumbled with a smirk, "I work for a living."
Naru shook his head, not really understanding the joke, then led Gimmel towards Mr. Ricoletti.
"Mr. Ricoletti," he said deferentially, "I present you Mr. Millwinder."
Gimmel wiped the ale foam from his moustache and offered his hand to Mr. Ricoletti.
"Pleased to meet you, Mr. Ricoletti. The name's Millwinder, Gimmel Millwinder. I wanted to talk to you, if you have the time, about some of my latest products that might be of value to you in protecting this valuable enterprise of yours."

"Well, I already have quite a good security staff here as you can see by my latest acquisition in this Mr. Naru. However, even they need a rest sometime. Please tell me about your wares," Andreas said. He then turned to Naru, "Thank you for seeing him to me, Naru. I think Otak needs some help at the bar."
Andreas then turned his attention back to the gnome. He never knew a gnome to sell faulty technologies so he was interested in what this man would have for him.

Philo saw that devil smile and knew instantly that he needed to develop some such expression of his own. That was really quite clever, and damned twisted too. He liked Francis, it was hard not to. Francis probably would have fit in well at the carnival, probably even better than Philo did.
Philo watched them leave and slid a hand down the girl's back. "I'll be honest with you." He said with a small shrug. "I haven't exactly been with a professional before. And I wasn't expecting this for tonight." He paused and smiled at her admiring her face, hair and eyes. "Everyone here is so beautiful. I mean you are too." He curled his lip sheepishly. "Well you've certainly injured my ability to form an aptly beautiful phrase of words."

For Philo:
When they all returned to Francis' favorite table he signaled one of the wait staff, a tall man with dark skin and very deep green colored eyes.
"Poel, could you run behind the bar and grab a bottle of cha'ree."
The very large man nodded and walked away.
"Cha'ree is a fabulous wine made in the Chareen Vineyard to the west of here. Lovely stuff indeed," Francis explained to Philo, and then he looked over to Rebecca, " Rebecca...is there anything you'd like to know about our new friend Philo?"
Bless the girl's heart, Andreas thought, she is still rather shy. He figured if he made her voice her question they could begin conversing and he could slip away, maybe he would ask Mae for a roll in the hay if she were available. Or maybe just a lovely dance.
Rebecca nodded, "Where are you from, and what did you use to do before you came here?"

Philo felt intoxicated by the very room now, as well as the light perfume of the woman who sat near him. His eye was drawn to the shine in her hair and the delicate curve of her upper lip.
He rather liked to see women up close especially if they wore make-up where he could see the line where lightly powdered skin was deeply colored to mark the line of the lip. Or about the eyes where sometimes different shades were blended to create a variety of hues that were only visible up close. Of course he also liked the look of a woman who had been so thoroughly mussed that all those careful lines and hues were muddled together and smudged.
He was speaking mostly to Rebecca as he started in on his life's history.
"Oh, I've done a lot of things, but I think I decided fairly early that acting was my passion. You might not have heard of where I'm from. It's a small town called Plugh, mostly a farming community, in fact my dad was a farmer. You see, my father never amounted to much and I didn't like his reputation. So I started out in the carnival." He smiled, recalling his history there. "I mean I kind of ran away and joined the carnival. They took me in, gave me some pay and gave me every filthy stinking odd job that could need doing. I stayed with them long enough that they did eventually assign me as personal assistant to the lobster man. How many people can claim such an illustrious title?" He chuckled, opting to leave out some of the less-fun aspects of his carnival adventure. At the time it had been his life and he had always known he would move on to something better.
He brightened. "But I moved on from there. Onward and upward!" He looked to Francis. "I left the carnival to join an acting troupe, which frankly wasn't a whole lot different from the carnival in some aspects but at least had some other promise and opportunities. I've played a few roles." He decide not to tell them how much more often he got to play "prop boy" or "personal assistant".
Eyes back to Rebecca he shrugged. "But that's really just history. I left them to find work here in Marn and here I am." He smiled again. She truly was beautiful. In the troupe he had little chance of meeting girls even half as lovely.

For Philo:
For the first time in a long time, Rebecca felt comfortable around men. This Philo seemed so down to earth and friendly, as well as perhaps a little modest deep down inside. Maybe he would be the one she told her problem to. However, that would have to wait. She still had a job to do since Francis paid for her services.
She also liked Francis and Andreas. They seemed like men she could be trust as well. It was strange, in her earlier years she would distrusted such men but considering that her family's problems she let go of such concerns. She was a courtesan now, but maybe these men could do something about it.
She smiled as she listened to Philo's story. He was a good man, she could tell.
"Yes, you've moved onward and upward. You're here with us at the Star now," she said flirtaciously and her hand slid to his leg.
The best way to get a man's attention was through certain appendages, after all. She gave Francis a wink and then whispered in Philo's ear, "Would you like to see my room?"

Philo's breath caught momentarily when he felt her fingers. The flush in his face became embarrassingly obvious.
Philo had to check himself from saying something truly goofy like. "Boy would I!" He had enough sense to tone down his enthusiasm at least a little. "Your room! Dear lady I would be honored." He allowed her to take him by the hand and start to lead him away.
He gave Francis a slight shrug and a wave in parting as if to say. "Sorry chap, she's the one in charge."

A few hours within his arms made her realize she could trust this man, this somewhat awkward but handsome and kind actor. Philo reminded him a lot of her previous lover before she had become a courtesan. Marco had been so honest, so kind...
But he was dead, killed by some hired thug. It was then the blackmail began. The blackmail that had landed her in the brothel. He wanted her to work there and every week, the same murderous thug would arrive and "purchase" her services for the evening. The share of profit would keep her father, Alexander, alive.
She wasn't sure why this mysterious villain with seemingly endless resources near the township of Shim was after her family, all she knew were that the only assurance of her father's safety were the letters and the cruel way the thug...T'eargos, would molest her behind the closed doors of her suite.
The demands had gotten higher on her body and her money, and the letters both from her father and his captor were more desperate for the first and more taunting from the latter. She needed help but she knew that they had a man watching Andreas Ricoletti
She began to cry then, helpless tears of despair that she could no longer hide under an innocent smile. She had tried to tell Francis about what was happening but he had been drunk that night. She wanted to pursue it again, but Francis would be endangered. Then again, so would Philo. She wasn't sure if she could place this weight upon their shoulders.
It was then that Philo began to stir.
Damn! I've awoken him[/i]
