Something had blocked her first strike, that pissed her off. She ignored it, focused only on the man's pained face - then her beautiful, deliciously beautiful blade cutting into his skull. But it wasn't enough. Elegantly her second blade slid free from the half-elf, the blade not slicing her a whit further, and dove into the man's shoulder. In a move of finality, Fay withdrew the blades, crossed her arms so her blades rested on either side of the man's neck, then slashed out, effectively beheading the already dead man and freeing her (temporarily) of her duty to her mother.

She panted, then remembered the block - what was that? Only then did she smell it - the blood of an innocent. Whirling she saw Jerial clutching a half-elven woman, seemingly trying to stop the bleeding of the belly wound Fay's blade had caused.

Nausea rose. She'd spilled the blood of a innocent for the blood of a criminal... even though the woman had been stupid enough to get between an assassin and her kill, she did not deserve this. Fay fell to her knees beside the two.

"I am so... I apolo-... Changers, I'm so sorry... but you should never have stepped infront of me."

See? She's insane, she's gorgeous. She doesn't even know she's talking to someone that's dead. Ohh, that's so great...

The id voice annoyed him to no end, so much talk and he can't even experience his desires unless he chose to reveal it to him. His rage was confused by Fayane, though. He abruptly dropped the body and ran his fingers through his hair, leaving the babbling woman and the bleeding woman behind. He paced...and paced...and paced. His thoughts would not bring themselves under control.

With finality, he roared with a warrior's feral insanity and threw himself to the ground, his head feeling as if it were tied to the tail of a galloping horse. A torrent ripped through his very being, pain mixed with pleasure, fear and ferocity mixed with confusion and a fire that kept it burning for days and days and years and centuries of endless, wracking time. As the black approached the edge of his mind, he grasped it, pulling it over him and letting him escape...

She saw Jerial drop the woman she now realizes is dead and felt sorrow. She should not have interfered. Murmuring a quick phase that wished the woman a peaceful passage to the Astral Plane. She'd just closed the woman's eyes with a gloved hand when Jerial roared. She looked up int time to see him fall to his knees, his head being cradled by his hands. Why would he...? The voices... they caused him pain? Fay's eyes saddened further still before she moved to crouch before Jerial, hesitantly covering his hands with her own. When that didn't feel like enough she quickly pulled off her gloves, stuffed them in her pocket, and covered his hands once more. Changers only knew why she was doing this but it felt right.

She looked around, people had obviously noticed her little quarrel and were now taking interest - too much interest. She looked down before cupping Jerial's face in her cool hands, patting his cheek.

"Jerial, we must move swiftly... I fear we- I- have drawn too much attention to us. We may meet with your contact later, but for now we must move. She murmured, heaving him under the arms when he didn't move instantly. She had to get him out of here now.

When Jerial awoke, he knew the headache was gone, and with it his resident voices. He was mildly interested with the fact that he was now propped slouching against a tree in the forest right out of sight of Shim. He was relieved that he saw his sword, now whole as a staff again, was propped against a nearby oak.

No, what surprised him was that Fayane was lying to his side, buried in the crook of his arm, as out cold as he was mere seconds ago. The warm heat of her body felt not oppressive but welcome. He could not see her face, as he knew moving would awaken her, and he knew she had suffered almost as much as he, inside; dealing with murderers sickened him.

He settled himself and drifted back into shapeless bliss.

He still wasn't moving, much to Fay's dismay, as she realized she had no choice now that people were cluing in that two people were dead. Quickly Fay pushed Jerial into a standing position, only to bow at the waist and catch him over her shoulder. Hefting him somewhat easily she crouched and grabbed his sword-turned-staff and turned to walk to the woods. Should she run she would draw further attention to herself. That didn't stop her from running once she was out of eyesight, however.

She ran to the one spot she'd never though she'd go again - home. True the corpse that was the once quaint cottage was now covered in cheerful undergrowth, but it was still home. Gently she couched to deposit Jerial against the same oak she would nap under when she was but a girl, leaning his staff beside him.

Even though she knew the area was deserted, Fay quickly scouted it, her ears catching only the sounds of the animals that resided there. Reassured, Fay slipped back to the still unconscious Jerial and though that perhaps sleep would be a good idea. Leaning back against the tree, pressed only barely against Jerial, Fay tilted her head back and allowed the shadows to slip over her mind and draw her into her dreams.

Little did she realize that while she slept, she moved to nuzzle and cuddle Jerial, comforted by his scent and warmth. She did, however, realize it when she woke shortly after Jerial. She stiffened as realization sank in, and slowly looked up to see his peaceful face, grateful to see his eyes were still shut. Perhaps he hadn't awoken yet, perhaps if she just slipped away...

She moved, slowly, gently, cautiously, praying to anyone who'd listen she didn't wake Jerial and anger him. Changers knew that was the last thing she wanted.

This time, Jerial bolted awake, clutching at his cloak. Fayane was gone. Elohim, she'd abandoned him. He'd really gone over the edge this time. He stood with a jolt and grabbed his staff. Jerial glanced around, finally spotting her. He was relieved, and once again ashamed at being so hasty to believe she had abandoned him. Blood and fire, she was a confusing one.

Fayane was obviously startled by his abrupt awakening. Jerial strode over to calm her down, adopting a calm, even tone and poised to attempt to relieve the half-shifted Fay. He reached his arms toward her shoulders to calm her; her fox tail twitched, her wide eyes staring.

She looked ready to bolt. Jerial backed off with his arms, instead walking up almost abreast with her. He was quite startled when she suddenly shifted her weight; indeed, he impulsively half-shifted to phoenix form. His eyes were almost the only indicator of such a change physically, but it was in this state that he was the strongest, physically and magically. He was also somewhat steeled from his voices.

Jerial's heart leaped out of his chest, only to return for another leap a half-second later. He was sure his eyes were as wide as Fayane's, as she stared back at him. Their eyes met for the third time, now half-fox to half-phoenix; this time, however, their eyes stayed locked for some time.

He was awake! Shit! Changers and any other Gods be damned and cursed! He looked so- wait why was he coming at her? Her tail twitched, alerting her that she'd shifted unconsciously and swore in every way she knew possible. He knew she was a guard, he knew she was a shifter, and he likely knew such things were NOT allowed to be combined. He was going to take her in, they were going to kill her. He shifted to her side and she moved to run - then suddenly she was staring into his eyes... again. But this time it was different. How was it different-

Feathers?

Or at least - that what it seemed like. Fay didn't SEE any per-say, but if felt like there were some there. And his eyes... they were more... bird like? Fay stepped back, eyes still wide, as she took in what she now realized was a fellow shifter. His hair was thicker, his eyes seemed to glow more, and he seemed... lighter? Was that the word? She cleared her throat before pushing her hair back slightly as though to see him better.

"Well... ah... I-I-I apologize... for one." Where was she going with this? "I-I-I should not have been so close to you while sleeping and it was very acceptable- no! UNacceptable because you likely did not like that and I apologize for making you uncomfortable and- Changers what ARE you?" She blurted out, very confused and, well, emotional to say the least.

Jerial approached the immobile Fayane, continuing his method of calming her. She didn't respond in any comprehensible way, so he grabbed her shoulders with his hands, tilting his head in a curiously bird-like fashion. She did not recoil from his touch. "Are you okay?" he whispered, drawing even nearer than before.

Her tensed shoulders slumped after a few seconds, as did the rest of her body. Jerial had no idea where to go next; the last tendrils of sleep still held him, along with the draining effect of adrenaline. He sat there, searching her with his eyes, waiting for her response.

He'd asked if she was alright. Fay could only giggled helplessly before looking back up into his grey eyes and smiling. He'd touched her, he hadn't fled, he was concerned for her. Without thinking she moved, arms around his neck and her frame shaking with restrained laughter.

"I have NOT the slightest idea." She managed to tell his ear. "I have finally killed the man that I have hunted for what feels like my entire life, though killed an innocent in the process." She tried to stop there, she honestly did, but for whatever reason she continued.

"I have found someone of similar experience as I, and have also found him to be a shifter as well. I am not alone!" She'd drawn back by this point, tossing her hands into the air, avoiding hitting the bird-man before her. It was then that she caught his stare and stopped, blushing.

"But I have been foolish and I apologize. Also irresponsible - it is I who should be inquiring as to your well-being... you were unconscious for some time."

Jerial chuckled, and went to her again, a slightly puzzled expression across his face. This time, he slid his hands around to the small of her back. "I'm fine. I was worried about you."

His voices chimed in. He was so glad they were back.

Woo-hoo!
That's it.
She is a fox?

"...about...me?" Now Fay was baffled. He was hugging her. He'd been worried about her. What the hell was going on here?! She was confused, frighted and happy all at once.

"Wha- why? I...what?" Fay didn't pull back, just kept on hugging him, but still... she was baffled.

(Note: This is a joint post)

Jerial thought for a moment. "Fay, I do care for you. Your father saw you as nothing, as a tool, a weapon to be used at his whim; I can tell that has scarred you." He paused, not sure what to say.

"You're more than a weapon, Fay. To me, anyway. Much more. In fact, I've never met someone more worthy of my praise, for I can say firsthand that I know exactly what you've been through." He chewed his lip, again unsure. He was on rocky ground.

"You're scared, and I'm not sure of what, but I would be too, and I am. But that can change." He stumbled over every word, and he was sure that the woman would see him as a fool. His doubts reigned quietly in his mind as the silence lingered.

Fay cast her eyes downward, shaken to the core. It was impossible, she tried to reason. No one, and she did mean no one, could ever care like that. Death stains a soul to the point where it would disgust even the most tolerant of men. So why...? Why was this man before her telling her this?

"I don't... understand." She managed to get out. "I am... not... human. Not... desirable beyond my skills. What- why-?" She looked helplessly at Jerial

He shook his head, pain in his eyes. "No. Those are lies that you've planted in yourself to cope with horrible experiences, more horrible than anyone should experience. I think you are a beautiful woman that needs someone to help her find her way." Jerial's lip felt like blood was about to flow; his heart felt like the beat of a war drum in the very deep of him. His expression was pained, sympathetic. The woman before him was obviously shaken; he felt like something was left unsaid, but his mind could not focus. Even the voices fell silent. "W...would you like that?...Do you understand what I'm saying?"

Lies...? But... they were what explained it all. Why Father saw her only as a weapon, why she'd fought all these years, she she'd become who she was. She looked at her hands almost feverishly. Could someone really, truly, believe she was more than just a blade? Could someone really understand enough to not only bypass judgement on her past actions, but accept her future ones? She swallowed and looked up to Jerials eyes, seeing his nerves, sympathy and pain.

"I...understand. And yes... I-I would... I would like that."

Jerial knew no response but to pull her closer, taking in a deep breath and hoping he would have a voice to talk to... be it Fayane's or one of his own

Fay allowed herself to be drawn closer when she remembered something. "Jerial... I must ask... what was your mission in Shim?" Slender hands rested awkwardly on his back.

"Mission?" He chuckled. "There was no mission. I was intrigued by you, and felt like I needed to learn more. I'm quite certainly glad I did." It was then that he realized they had been whispering.

Fay was baffled. No mission? Get to know her? Changers! Who was this man!? "I-I see...?" Fay murmured, doing her best to understand. Another question, instead rose to her mind.
"So... if I may ask... what now? What-" her voice broke a moment and she cleared her throat. Damn these emotions! "What are your plans?"

"Your guess is as viable as mine." Jerial wiped her cheek, tears she probably didn't even know she was crying.

Fay started at the contact and stared at his damp fingers. Tears. She had not cried since... since... she shook before closing her eyes and automatically switching to her assassin's mind.

"Well... I have a general idea, should you feel like you would like to be my companion you are free to do so." She took a deep breath before reaching into her pocket and pulling out the item that she had found on the ground.

"A letter," she explained "telling of a gathering of the rest of the bandits who destroyed my life. I wish to destroy them." She said simply.

"Where are they? I am willing to follow." Jerial was somewhat glad for the change of pace, for it brought his better voices out of hiding.

She unfolded the letter and re-read it painfully. She'd tried to read over the important parts while carrying Jerial, though it had been hard. Even still... she averted her gaze.

"I do not know... I could only tell from what I could read that they were to meet." Fay pointed accusingly at the word as proof. "Beyond that I...am at a loss."

(Note: Another joint post, we were on a roll x))

"Feel no shame, it is not your realm." Jerial carefully took the letter, taking care not to seem callous in front of Fayane. He read it quickly, three times to make sure to look slow enough to not be showing off. "They are meeting near the grounds of the Society of the Changed. Near Apthoni. Between there and Athena." Jerial could not tell of any specific mark emblazoned on the letter; in fact, it had been written in an off-hand, to purposely hide racial, personal, even regional, handwriting. "Are we to go now?"

Fay watched, enviously, as he read the letter far faster than she ever could. "Where is that? I have never been outside these woods save for Marn and Shim. And yes... we shall leave as soon as we are able. I may have killed mother's murderer... but I wish to protect any from any harm that may follow should they be allowed to remain alive."

"If there be anything you should need, you would do well to acquire it now. I require a last trip into Marn for personal effects, and I expect you would also." Here he laughed, and his voice became coy and light-hearted. "Not many carry their world on their own shoulder. Actually, some would do well to try such a lifestyle." Jerial knew that Fay was familiar with some of those he was alluding to, primped, spoiled Battlemages and the like, that would not dare to leave the walls without heinous reason.

"Come, let us go," Jerial suggested, ambling to collect his staff. He turned to wait for Fay to follow, or to take her own path, as she usually did.

Fay stood, dusting herself off before nodding at Jerial. "One moment... I must pay my respects, then I shall follow." She told him before moving to stand where their front door once was. She closed her eyes and breathed, allowing memories to surface and fade.

"Soon, Mother... Father... I shall have destroyed what had destroyed us, and then you may rest in peace." Her eyes opened slowly before she murmured a farewell and moved towards Marn, seeing nothing beyond her own tears once more.

Jerial checked the straps of his fairly new iron bracers for the third time. He had spent next to all of his money on supplies for the trip, and the bracers were part of the deal he had made with the unknown merchant. He gave the butcher most of his Bishani, and a few other meaningless belongings, and the merchant gave him new boots, a grey woolen cloak, iron bracers, a mail shirt, and leather gloves. All he had other than these were clothing and the contents of his leather bag. Fayane had gathered her belongings and had met him south of the city, outside the walls.

Jerial was quiet; he had been listening to a new philosophy on politics from one of his voices all morning, and chose to continue listening. However, he would be interrupted if an interesting topic was raised by an outsider. It was a nice day, and the air was free of the wind that had plagued the land for the past few days. The sunlight played warmly across his freshly washed face. He would wait for Fayane, then commence the journey to Apthoni.

Fay'd made it home safely enough, small scratches on her face a testament to her distracted mind through the trip. She'd stopped by the Guard-Captain's room, explained she was quitting, and left. She wouldn't bother returning her armor - she'd paid for it after all.

Now she walked the streets of Marn, her bag with all of her possessions slung over her back, not knowing if it was for the last time. She'd grown to like this city, if only barely, and the thought of leaving forever upset her... barely.

A gloved hand came up to toy with her mothers locket, fingering the familiar shape. No... it was her Mother she would miss. She hesitated, did she really want to leave Marn, her home? The letter in her breast pocket burned, as though reminding her of it. Yes, yes she did. A small breeze carried Jerial's now forever familiar scent to her and she smiled slightly. At least, she thought to herself, I am within desirable company.
