Physical Description:
Rinler is a very forgettable face as the saying would go. He is of average height and lean build, mostly because of travel and a lack of nourishment that plagues many during these difficult times. Everything about Rinler strikes one as forgettable, no odd features or disproportional body type. Not even a head of hair can distinguish him from others as he rarely ever has any on his head with his very close buzzed haircut, almost nearing balding. One needs to merely get closer though to see the one feature of Rinler that sets him apart from others, and that is his very sunken eyes. They are a very light brown in color but they carry a certain sadness or weight that most can see immediately upon meeting the man. They rarely allow for a glimpse into his thoughts and if one were to meet him along the road they would assume this is a man who has seen great pain in his time.
Rinler has very simple and useful taste in his attire as he has spent most of his life traveling in some sense but he is more of a wanderer. He sticks to darker colors and mostly leathers. He is usually seen in a dark tunic and pant with a brown cloak wrapped around his shoulders with a hood to keep his shaven head under cover from the daylight when traveling. To best describe his outward appearance, nondescript would be the word most commonly used. The clothing also doubles as more than just the common courtesy others bestow as well of covering each others naked bodies. Beneath the cloaks and leather Rinler's story can truly be told for his body is scarred and marred in many different places. Some maybe old wounds from scraps as a young man while others have no obvious culprit as to the cause. Despite this he lives a rather simple life and from the looks of him but at the same time has a youth about him that does not show the forty years that have taken a toll on his inner self.
Possessions:
Rinler does not carry much and makes do with what he can buy or find throughout his travels. The very few notable possessions that he claims besides his clothing are a small, old carving knife. While sharp enough to carve into small pieces of wood it is relatively harmless because of it's size if ever needed in any for of combat. Rinler carries with him a small dagger for if the situation ever arose where one was needed, it has never failed him thus far and always struck home true the few times he has needed it to save himself. Rinler is no assassin slinking through the night dagger at the ready to slit a victims throat, he is far from that type of lifestyle although he has been told he can lurk in the shadows at times his motives are nowhere near as diabolical as one would assume. Besides the knife and the dagger Rinler's one other most prized possession is a small leather bound book that has lasted through the ages and ever since Rinler became conscious of life he has always had on his person. Granted he is unable to read any portion of it as it is in some dialect unbeknownst to him or anyone he has ever come across.
Powers or Strengths:
Rinler from his build is not a fighter, if he were to ever, and he has found himself in these situations, caught in the middle of a fistfight he could throw a few blows here and there but ultimately he would be overpowered by someone of a greater stature. While not the fighter in the sense of battle Rinler is hardened because of his years of travel. While he may not be able to strike a greater blow than an opponent Rinler is able to stand up to a rather severe beating at times. It has become a necessity traveling in many lawless lands where justice is merely a figment of the imagination. So while not the overpowering presence of a Herculean figure, Rinler makes up for it in his hardiness and grit.
As already stated, Rinler is no fighter in the regular sense of the word and while this may be so he does carry a dagger in his travels and is proficient in its use if the time presents itself. He his not at all a warrior hero wielding whatever sharp object he can find to slay his foe, but rather a calm calculating hand when need be in battle to defend himself. Rarely is Rinler the one to strike a first blow and if he is that blow is never intended to be lethal.
In contrast to the dagger, Rinler is a mastermind with his carving knife. He has been know to carve some of the most beautiful figures on whatever he can lay his blade too. It is more of a hobby and way to pass the time and concentrate his thought more than anything but in his travels at times there are those who are struck by the work and are willing to pay for it. It is not something Rinler looks to as a profit though, it is a ways to a means in order to feed and clothe himself at times.
Rinler's personality if one could not already gather it is that of someone very self-absorbed although that is not the word he would use or wish to portray. He keeps to himself as that has been how the majority of his life has been, he would like nothing more than to let someone into his life to give him a sense of belonging. Holding him back however is his cold and calculating sensibility which some who have met him in passing attribute as a complete pessimism. Rinler is just a man who has seen much and knows to doubt everything he sees and experiences upon a first glance.
Behind this rather average facade though lies something much greater and harder to see. Those scars and marks all over his body are from something much more surprising, much for frowned upon by some sects. Rinler is blessed, or cursed, with magical abilities. To him they are a blessing and a curse for they have helped him escape the most perilous of situations but at considerable cost to his mind and body. The more severe scarring on his body stems from the use of these magical abilities when abused. Rinler's powers are currently a small repertoire but are rather useful in a lone wanderers lifestyle. He has the ability to control the element of fire on a very small but slightly growing scale. He is currently able to produce flame to provide a torch of sorts to brighten places around him or to start a fire if able to come in contact with flammable objects. There have however been, mishaps, with this power that are far from Rinler's control. He has had moments of passion, mostly fury, where he is able to cause an already lit flame to grow out of control. This is nowhere near controllable yet and Rinler is afraid to meddle further with this power at this current juncture.
Rinler's one other power he currently possesses and has prospered during his lifetime is his ability to see his own immediate future when in perilous danger. This vision of sorts is also very wild and only when in immediate danger does this foresight occur. It only appears when Rinler is in some type of lethal danger, he is not able to see someones future or even his own past a few seconds from an event occurring that may threaten his life.
(This character has a special power that will develop as his own plot moves along)
Weaknesses and Flaws:
Besides the obvious physical weaknesses of Rinler in addition to his lack of proficiency in any type of true combat he has internal flaws an weaknesses that no one can see or feel. In regards to his magical ability as already mention he has brief respites of time where he cannot control his elemental adeptness with fire. In addition to this flaw with his magically ability Rinler also has issues with his life or death foresight. In times of even greater passion, be it rage or ecstasy, Rinler's visions become rampant and flurried. There is no immediate danger to his life and as if in a blur he sees actions unfolding except he is unable to decipher or even remember what he will see in these moments. He assumes they are of his own life because that is the nature of his power currently but he has no idea what they mean.
In both of these situations there are multiple backlashes to the uncontrolled use of magic. The first being the physical pain and drain it causes on his body. The scarring as mentioned is from the misuse of Rinler's emotions as a younger man, allowing these powers to prevail through his own judgment has caused him physical harm at times. The marks on his body are the sign of this in addition to the weakness he feels, it is as if he has been running forever after one of these incidents occur and he is virtually useless after they occur. As time has gone on he has learned to subdue his emotions but here is no way to stop the process once it occurs and the physical drain is still unbearable. On top of the physical pain the mental and emotional strain is greater. It is as if a life's full of knowledge has flown through his mind when they occur. His thought process is that of someone wit no memory or recollections and will to function or think. A very dangerous situation to be in on the open road.
Another flaw that Rinler possess is one that also has likely kept him alive and that is his ability to keep himself distant from others when he feels the need. Traveling for so long it is hard to have friends to confide in as everyday has the goal of survival at the top of the list. It is as if Rinler trusts no one which is partially true, but that is because he has yet to wander upon someone worthy of the trust he wishes to bestow upon them. This can cause quite and issue if Rinler were to ever arrive in a community sort of lifestyle as he himself knows those who isolate themselves tend to remain that way by their own doing.
Some of this may stem from past experience because at one point Rinler had trusted a woman with an unwavering loyalty. So he was capable of function as more than just a passerby, but due to unforeseen circumstances that partnership is the closest word that could be used ended abruptly.
Rinler has always felt some type of calling in his life and wanders not as aimlessly as it may seem. There is something he is searching for, he just knows not of what it is. He feels there is something out there for him to attain he just cannot find out what that is. This in turn can make him a rather abrupt fellow, which is slightly justified. If you were searching for a reason for life, for why you feel you were placed here today, and had spent most of that life traveling to discover it and had not , you may understand the burden he places on himself.
That is the other major flaw of Rinler, the responsibility for all of his actions no matter his control. He does not believe in the idea of sharing the burden and anything that happens is of his own doing and of his own responsibility. He is without doubt his harshest critic and is the judge, jury and executioner of his own trial. It makes it difficult for others to work with or associate with him in any sense because he refuses to let others assist him in his endeavors. It could be his undoing but so far it has lead him to be the man he is today.
History:
Born of parents with no desire to care for him and no desire to tell him who he was or who they were. Rinler was discovered abandoned with a small book that said on the inside cover“The opportunity lies within and the choices you make will define you, but never destroy you...” by an older couple who made a living on a rather small farm. Rinler Mikhailu was never born, an unknown child was born, Rinler was someone who developed because of the struggle and battles he fought through his life. There were no values instilled in him from caring parents, there was no such thing as a family to Rinler.
He grew as a newborn with this old couple on their farm, he was fed a bare minimum to survive as that was all they could offer but for whatever reason they felt the need to care for this newborn, it could have been because they had never had children of their own but for whatever reason they did what they could and managed. Rinler as a small child never spoke, his “family” was always concerned with this as he made no noise whatsoever, a dangerous thing especially for a newborn.
There was no eventful moments in this small child’s life living out of the way and being cared for by the old couple with the exception of a few odd occurrences. There were times where the couple would be away tending to something and young Rinler would quietly grow discomforted, when the couple would return they would find that upon touching the young child that he had a feverish temperature. The first sign of this child being something special came in the form of a fever. Little did they know, and how could they after all, that this was the beginning of the power young Rinler would find he possessed. There was one other time his powers seemed to potentially manifest early and that was particularity frightful night when he was awoken by crashing noises within the small house that was called home. Thieves had broken in, finding nothing of value but as a young child Rinler knew they evil that these men possessed and while never communicating anything it was apparent the look of rage upon the young boys face followed by a look of shear confusion and bewilderment. Those were the few moments as a young child where the powers Rinler would soon discover occurred, they lay dormant otherwise for most of his youth.
As time bore on young Rinler eventually broke his silence and began attempting communication with his mother and father figure. Fortunately for him, although he would not agree then, they were rather learned and educated him to read, write and speak the language of the day. He had a very humble upbringing and worked diligently on the small farm and watched as small village began to blossom nearby. He would be adamant on attending trips into town to see the development, while rather small scale it was still progress.
Rinler probably would have lived a rather happy life the way things were, he knew nothing of his history and as far as he was concerned this had always been his home and would be his future. By the time he had turned what would have been sixteen he had matured greatly. The people he knew as mother and father felt he had reached a point in his life where it was time for him to know the truth. A precursor though to this telling of truth however was that Rinler respected his “mother” more than anyone he knew. He felt not a feeling of spousal love towards her but more than just the love a a mother and son. This bond likely formed as she was the only person around for much of his life and was the only person he could connect with as her husband had other matters of the home to attend to.
Needless to say the conversation was not a pleasant one, and to make matters worse his “mother” was the one who bore the brunt of the news. His “father” had grown disconnected and tired of the lies and so he distanced himself from Rinler gradually throughout the years in the preparation for this moment. It had been roughly twelve years since those last occurrences of weird ability and today was the day Rinler truly discovered more about himself than he could have ever imagined by discovering everything he had know so far was a lie. The hatred swelled greatly in him because of this betrayal, all he knew, all he called home was a fallacy. A facade for what he really was, an orphan with no one who truly wanted him. The rage built up inside of him in this moment and that’s when the worst of it occurred, a small torch of flame appeared above his hand but what was worse was the visions streaking across his mind. The mental pain it caused him was too much and for what seemed like an eternity was merely two seconds to the couple. All they saw was the flame and the look of all the blood being drained from the teenaged Rinler's face and then saw his collapse.
Rinler was out for nearly three days after this, and a lot of talk had gone on in the household at that time. It was decided “mutually” that Rinler would leave as soon as he was ready. Really it had been his pseudo-fathers intention all along, it was too much for another mouth to feed and he had grown separated from the boy. His “mother” was not as agreeable at first until Rinler awoke from his semi-paralysis. His hatred was not as burning, but this woman before him whom he had trusted was someone he could no longer bear. The thought of staying to live this lie repulsed him almost and he took his leave, he was allowed the carving knife he carried today an d the most basic necessities.
While young still, Rinler was not completely daft, he stayed close by because while he wanted to deny this life as much as he tried it was all he knew. He took shelter in a nearby village where he was tormented by the inhabitants there. Beatings occurred regularly and who was Rinler to stop them, he had no reason to be there and was incapable of properly defending himself at the time.
As the days grew on young Rinler realized this was no place for him, he took what he had carved what he could and set off with whatever he could use to barter be it currency or some type of food. The life of Rinler the traveler had now begun. He was able to move alongside some of the trade routes and learned the way of life of a vagrant quickly. He was however not well received no matter where he went. He did realize the potential he had after hearing stories of the power he seemed to possess on that night that seemed ages ago. He sat and tried as hard as he could at night to reignite that flame. Try as hard as he could it still would not occur for him.
Then, one night, as seems to always be the case with Rinler it happened. He had fallen asleep off the beaten path when all of a sudden he had what he thought was a dream of seeing himself being bitten by some vile serpentine creature of the wild and watched as his body convulsed until pausing and turning to a lifeless corpse. He awoke to this sight in his mind and felt the heat of an open flame almost as if in the palm of his hands, he looked first to see there actually was a flame there, and a rather large on at that and then off just outside the light of this flame he saw that serpentine creature slither away from his dream.
It was then he saw what he could do and with this new burst of wind he tried at his might during his travel to reproduce these occurrences and was able to do so on a smaller scale with the ability to light himself a fire and provide some type of light in the darkness, the visions however he could not replicate.
One day on his travels he came across a small band of people sitting around a fire of their own. He walked, more of lurked closer to join them, but stopped on his way when he saw what was occurring before his very eyes. These burly men were forcing themselves upon a very beautiful and unwilling female. While Rinler's only connection to another person had been his “mother” and that tie was severed long ago the sight of a female be wronged in such a matter was infuriating. Rinler immediately eyed the fire and knew what he must do, he had no idea how his powers extended but he somehow knew at this very moment that he could at least direct them. All as if a swift wind had come through the flame at the center of the group erupted uncontrollably igniting everything surrounding, including the men...and the woman. Rinler did not see all of this unfold fortunately, he saw the blaze erupt and then just darkness. He awoke to the morning sun and gruesome sight, while he had stopped the crime it was at some cost, particularity the cost of all involved. The pain he felt was unbearable, it was as if their lives were now directly connected to him and all the pain they had felt was impressed upon Rinler. It was at least hours later before Rinler had completely over come that additional emotional pain that Rinler began to feel the physical pain of what had happened.
He disrobed and to his disbelief saw a marred body covered in painful scarring in indescribable shapes. It was then that Rinler realized the true cost standing next to that carnage that he knew he had caused. Then as if a flash of lightning Rinler's eyes closed to see a group on horseback approaching, and then saw his untimely demise met for the crime that he obviously committed being the only survivor of the scene. Rinler did the only thing he could, he ran, he ran and fought through the pain. He had no idea how far or how long he traveled. When he did stop, he realized now his potential, he could apparently see his potential demise before it happened if it was a certainty. He also knew though that at any moment he could see his life come to and end so he did not see this as a power to control but a fortune he was blessed to have.
Rinler's later years were anything but uneventful but in consideration for who he has become today many events in the early portion of his life have shaped who he has become today, he has traveled many miles near and far trying to find his purpose, at times having horrible relapses of his uncontrollable power but at the same time learning to harness it when he can. As time goes on though and he uses this magic his scarring gets deeper and darker and the cost on his mental stability weakens. Who knows what is to lie ahead for Rinler, while his body seemed to deteriorate he still looks and feels young and alive. He hopes to find his true calling and lives by the book he cannot read that was provided when he was abandoned save for the inside cover. Rinler knows the choices he makes are what cause him to be the man he is today, the question is, what do those choices, either decided or not say for tomorrow?
