Hello
I just happened upon this board today and figured it was worth a try. I've been trying to find a decent game to play in for awhile now. I presently run a play-by-email game that's been reasonably successful since last November (2005). I'm OLD. I finished college back in 2000 and have a baby daughter. I've been playing RPGs (tabletop, then online) since before college so hmm, that'd be 1993-ish.
This is my first time working with a BBS system. I've been playing PBEMs for a couple of years now and stumbled over the BBS and livejournal games when advertising my own mailing list. I've thought the BBS games were some of the neatest ones for awhile now especially because of how they incorporate graphics.
Hmm, what else to say about me? I used to work full time as a software engineer but now I'm a stay-at-home mom who does independent software contract work from time to time. In college I completed two bachelors degrees, one in Biology and the other in Computer Science but I also studied Biomedical Engineering for a number of years.
My character is one I originally created for a game a friend of mine was running. She decided to kill the game after a couple of months and I've kind of wanted to play him anyway. I typically like to have a few characters in games I belong to and I love to play a wide variety of personas from villains to goody-two-shoes to the not-sure-whats in between. In fact my favorite villains are the ones who sometimes seem like good guys even though they're really being self-serving pricks. On the other hand I don't believe in joining a game with a bad guy. It just seems like that would be bad form.
So anyway, I hope y'all like my character and I should be around to chat.
Becky

I'm waiting for character approval and was reading through some of the current threads. I'm not sure where I want to put Philo yet. The brothel is tempting but since he's low on money I don't think that would be on his radar as something to do.
I also saw the help wanted notice for the guards. It would humor me immensely if Philo got it in his head to try to join the guard. That is definitely not his calling. I think he wouldn't last very long but it would be fun to write about anyway.

lol that's okay... at least it doesn't cut off every minute or so... imagine trying to rp in a chat room like that.. yeah that happened to me... Ask Verrik about it.. I'm sure he remembers lol
anyway...i found that finding a place to start was the hardest part as well. As far the guard thing... that could be quite fun to play (and read lol) as you probably know well putting a character into a situation that "isn't exactly them" can make for some of the most fun writing. :-)

If that happened to me I think I'd give up and switch to my computer that's on the wired network. Actually I fixed my wireless problem earlier. I just had to tell the router to use a different channel to cut out interference. I'd been having problems with interference in the early part of the day anyhow and that seemed to have fixed it.
And that was precisely my thought about Philo and an unlikely job. I think that's what I'm going to aim for. Philo's supposed to be kind of a comedy character anyway. Past incarnations of him have tended to be court fools.
I noticed Sabek is looking for work too, maybe he and Philo both can apply for work with the city guard. I'm sure Sabek would be equally welcome *snort*.

Welcome, and sorry I didn't write here sooner! I hope you enjoy your stay at our humble board
.
I agree - putting your characters into situations they can't handle is unbelievably fun to write, and always leads to interesting things like character development, hehe. Or being stabbed in the back. Whatever.
I'm so thrown off by all the new people. It's like, I check OOC stuff, and there's like, MESSAGES. Magic.

Hi!
Philo!
Welcome to the boards. If you want to join me at the brothel I can work something out.

Hah! I just wish I could justify it.
Well, I still need character approval so I don't want to put the cart ahead of the horses.
But let's see, I suppose he might wander into the brothel if he got lucky and stumbled onto some money. He's a spendthrift so that's the sort of thing that probably would part the man from his savings.
Though I suppose he could also get a job working around or near the brothel. That might be amusing and would provide an opportunity for him to interact there.
Any other ideas?

And a late welcome from me too.
I'm looking at your education and thinking woah. Biology and computer science. That's hardcore, and very cool. You character's name suggests an interest in philosophy too, ancient or modern. Makes me think of my philosophy of religion course, which is probablyright up Tom aka Nathaniel Betterman's alley... Although I fear ooc debate of any form.
Yes Jess, I fear it. Anyway.
Your character's been approved but I don't have any suggestions off hand for where you should start RPing. I have some catching up to do here as I'm a bit swamped o.O

Don't worry, I'll find a spot to start. There are a lot of possibilities and the hard part is aiming for someplace where it would do some good. IE. someone who needs a posting partner right now.
Actually Philo's name came from a name website I'm very fond of. I often pick names for my characters based on the meanings of their names.
Here's the site:
http://www.behindthename.com/
It's a cool site also for the random name generator thing, but I recommend it for the search facility and just the amount of useful information it has. (There's also a variant of the site for surnames http://surnames.behindthename.com/). It's great for when you're having a block naming a character but have some notion of what you're going for. I like it also if I'm trying to come up with a name for say, a few Russian characters and I don't want them all to be named Vlad.
Now according to Behind the Name, Philo is actually Greek and it means "to love". The last name is English and means "white dog" or "hero" (but I got it from a different website). And I could probably get into a long discussion of why I picked those specific names for him but it would probably ramble on for more than a few more paragraphs so I'll spare you all unless someone really cares.
Oh yes, and "putting on airs". I didn't think that was all that obscure a saying. It generally means to lord it over someone or to act like a master of something. So in the case of Philo's father he was putting on a show for a lady friend and ended up pulling a tree down on himself. This is actually sort of based on a legit Darwin Award story. If you visit that website you could probably find it.
And this is too funny. My 11 month old daughter got her hands on a clean diaper. I don't know why she insists on playing with things like that but I guess it's better than a dirty diaper. She carried it over to her diaper pail and put it right in LOL. Well yes, it does go in there eventually I guess.

Hehehe. Stuff like that is why I love watchin' my nieces. Kid logic is just adorable to watch. I LOVE watching them work stuff out, and they're both way smarter than anyone can handle.
The littlest, though, she's determined to give us all heart attacks. She's absolutely fearless, which means she walks INTO the waves instead of running away, doesn't mind going up/down the stairs when no adult is around, and doesn't care if you're a stranger. Ugh.

Yes, Evie is somewhat fearless. She climbs all over the couch including the back of it and frequently disappears up the stairs. She recently learned what "clap your hands" means and it's so cute to see her actually do it. I'm trying to teach her about where her mouth and nose are among other things.
Unfortunately at her age she wants to fight naps. She'd rather be awake all the time and when she gets over-tired she gets clumbsy. Last weekend she fell and hurt her eyelid on the coffee table when she was overtired and I hate seeing her with a black eye.
