A conversation in my class forum.. I'm sure Frug will like it.
Why is October 10th of this year the answer to the question of life, the universe, and everything?
Because 101010 is 42 in binary.
And the Question to the answer of the question of the meaning of life, "What is six times nine" is actually 42 in number base 13.
I don't remember reading about it being base 13 math. Now I have to figure out how to convert it.....just because.
The easiest way is to use integer division and modulus (%).
For this case, you take the decimal number and use integer division by 13. So the ultimate question is "What is 6 times 9?", which in decimal is 54.
So, 54/13=4 using integer division. So the 13's place is 4. 54 % 13 = 2, so the units place is 2.
Thus, 42. You can convert any base to another using this method, but it's easiest to compare them in base 10. So converting from binary to hex it's easiest to add an intermediary base 10 adjustment unless you can do basic math operations in the resulting number base manually.

Re: 101010
Sweet. I had a feeling that 10/10/10 would be special in some way, but I never thought of it like that. Numbers are magical. If you don't love them, you're obviously mad... though I can see how spending a lot of time with them could send you mad too.

This makes me want to re-read the Hitchhikers guide.
Through the gates of hell, as we make our way to heaven, through enemy lines, Primo Victoria!
