Protocol for major character changes

Post by Derin Edala » Mon Oct 04, 2010 7:28 am

I was going to PM the mods about this, but since other people are bound to have the same problem it might be thread-worthy.

Derin's a body snatcher, and she's probably going to change bodies really soon. This is going to mean a different physical appearance, different property (her new body will live somewhere else and own different stuff), and possibly for future body changes (although my current plan is to stick her in an unremarkable peasant girl next) different abilities. The problem is that none of this is on Derin's character sheet, which means that new players won't know any of it unless they go poking around old threads. So my question is... what's the protocol when characters undergo changes? Do I make a new character sheet? Update the old one? Just bring people I play with in the future up-to-date via PM?

Right now, she's just going from peasant girl to slightly different-looking peasant girl, but if dramatic changes happen in the future it might be hard to keep track. Besides which, if she ends up in the body of anybody with significantly different abilities, influence or property, the mods would need to approve it.

You could just edit the old character sheet with the new information, as well as keeping the old information on there, right? And perhaps a date or something for when you changed it? Like at the top you could have the current form, and then previous forms listed in order below, along with the resulting changes, and maybe even links to threads which that body was used in.

Not that I'm a mod or anything...

Ask one of the mods (metarie or Niabi would be your best bet until Pagusel gets back, then ask her too) to unlock the app. Then you go in and change whatever needs change, tell them that you're ready, and one of them will go in and re-read it, and re-approve it. Then you're done!

Daq Bekkar is an example of a character who had a plot-related character overhaul. We don't have an established protocol for how this is done, but his profile shows one way this has been done before. He actually completely altered the former profile, including in the history a recap of what has happened to the character so far that led him to his current, altered state. He submitted the character application for approval.

In Derin's case, since this switcheroo may happen a few times over, I would recommend you simply post a new profile in the thread (without deleting the original) for approval each time you want to change the character. If you make a habit of changing bodies all the time, and each body is unremarkable in terms of abilities (say, a series of anonymous peasant girls who are all mostly the same), I would say you can just amend the "base" profile with the note that she sometimes occupies very common bodies, in which case her current form is really only the concern of the people playing in the thread with you, for purposes of clarity. Kind of like how shifters work, I guess, since we don't update our profiles every time we change forms.

But if anything drastic changes, I would ask you to put it in application form. I unlocked your profile thread so you can do this when you need to.

Thanks. I'd prefer her not moving around too much, but sometimes the plot forces it on you.
