Returning to the Scene

Post by Chrishton Radu » Mon Jun 05, 2006 1:23 am

Chrishton, once again in his human form, walked back through the alley where he had last seen the vampire and the feline. He had completely failed to track the vampire down, ending up all the way in Shim with nothing to show for it. It was really quite pathetic, and he was none too pleased with himself for the failure.

Nor was he pleased with the lack of help his guiding spirits were offering. Either the troll he found in Shim had some significance, or they were keen on wasting his time right when things got interesting.

Whatever the case, his only option was to go back to the scene of the crime and begin searching again for evidence of who the new vampire was and what she was doing in Marn. A tzimisce, she had to have some relation to Bela, and in turn to Chrishton's reason for being here - whatever that was.

He was hungry, tired, dirty... Living like a human on the streets without shelter or a hot meal was taking its toll on the man. Soon he would have no choice but to return to the woods as a fox and hunt down something to eat. A few days like that and he would feel better for sure, but he wasn't sure he could afford the luxury of leaving the human world behind just yet.

So he trudged his way down the alley once more, looking for clues and feeling miserable all the while. If anyone caught him now, he was done for, not even sure he had the energy to run away again.

Ryxa was off-duty. Her house was big enough for a large family but she was the only one there. She had sent away the staff, preferring to be alone to contemplate the new painting she had purchased. Her icy blue and black eyes traveled over the frame, the type of paint, and the scene depicted, studying everything about it. Abruptly she noticed it was half an inch off center, leaning to the right. Whoever had put it up hadn't done a very good job of it! Grumbling, Ryxa carefully nudged the huge painting until it was perfect, which took a few minutes. Stepping back, she smirked, and thought she would have to do some punishing for whoever had put the painting up… The skinny servant, the one with the forever-messy mop of hair, she remembered…

Footsteps sounded off the hard wood floor in the hall, and a man entered. Nervous, a hat he fumbled with in hand, the man jumped as he saw her standing staring at the painting, and cautiously cleared his throat to attract her attention. Ryxa turned from the painting and glared, frowning. "What?" she barked, making him jump again.

"Uhm, I knocked, but … um, your door, n'one answered yer door." He gulped. She continued to glare. "Well, uh, them judges wanted to know if you had sum time. That man still hasn't been found, and them judges wants you on the job round-the-clock, not at home on your-- They's said that, not me; those're them judges' words." The messenger's town accent irked her, and she continued to glare. However, her frown relaxed at the prospect of finding some new, slimy, sneaky mage-criminal, especially one who had eluded the guard for so long. That didn’t happen often, and when it did it was always fun.

"Tell them I'm on it," she said and flicked her fingers at him. Relieved at the subtle dismissal he backed away. His footsteps were hurried and heavy on the wooden floor as he left. Alone again, Ryxa strode to her bedroom and took her time taking out her neatly arranged Battlemage armor from her wardrobe and donning every last, customized piece. It fit her easily, made mostly of black leather but with plates of metal for extra protection. Last, the mage slipped on her red leather gloves. Ryxa brushed her strawberry-blonde hair until it was neatly parted, painted her lips with crimson lipstick, and rimmed her eyes with kohl. Satisfied she looked truly intimidating, she walked out the door, grabbing and tying on her long, black cape (and making sure to stuff a few matches into a nifty pouch to hang on her belt).

When Ryxa walked down the street in her armor, cape billowing out behind her, people moved. Her reputation preceded her; everyone knew about her, knew what she was capable of. Little kids started to cry if she barely glared at them. It was more than her appearance or reputation; her power lay in her magic. Anyone that crossed her was made to suffer more than racks, whips, or any known torture device could reproduce.

Yet, how was even someone of her power to find the tall man with "dark clothes and shoulder-length dark hair" in a city full of such people? She wasn't a fucking bloodhound! Her fist clenched. Her true job lay in torture, not tracking. The woman took a deep, calming breath as she walked down a less-frequented street. Well, it was better than sitting on her rump at home, and when she found him, she would have some fun. If he was "loud and unruly," he would most undoubtedly be somewhere "loud and unruly": downtown.

Ryxa skimmed the crowds going about their business as she reached Downtown, but everyone seemed calm enough. She didn't see any undue commotion or anyone suspicious. The seedy lurkers straightened and looked away nervously when her eyes swept over them, but none of them seemed like the wanted man "Chrishton Radu."

Ryxa made sure to stop at every alleyway entrance as she went by, checking the shadows for anyone suspicious. She interrogated a few people in them, most of them youngsters or bums, and then interrogated tall men with dark hair on the street (who were all meek even though she was much shorter than they) to no avail. A few hours had passed as she wandered the streets and her irritation grew. If she didn't find the murdering magic-user soon she was going to arrest someone random to prod into screaming and tears. She wanted the joy buzz.

Then, as Ryxa looked down another alley, she saw movement. It was hard to see, so she scooped out a match from the pouch on her belt and moved inside. It sprang to life with only a slightly mental nudge, and she held it out to see the person. They were tall, with dark hair… Suspicious. "You, state your business," she barked, glaring over the match at the guy's back.

"Of course" He muttered.

Of course someone would find him now, at exactly the worst possible time. Three days alone in the streets with nothing to show for it but filth, an empty stomach and some brusies. As far as his mission, whatever that was, was concerned, he had accomplished nothing. He was more angry than anything else, frustrated at how bad his luck had been, and although he was strong enough and mentally able to keep fighting for months, even years if he had to, he didn't want to. Stuck in the middle of nowhere, friends all vanished, hunted by a vampire and an army of guardsmen... And for what? Inari had never even given him a reason to be in Thar Shaddin. It was all very aggravating.

He tried to see who it was, but the match light was in his eyes and all he could make out was the figure of a shorter woman with nice hair who dressed like a battlemage. A female and a battlemage working for Marn. That was both good and bad news. Good because he was sure he could pummel her physically and perhaps manipulate her emotionally. Bad because she was sure to have some nasty abilities of her own if she had managed to get into the battlemages.

Deciding to avoid conflict, he started shying away from the light. He crinkled up his face, which was filthy from his journey through the woods and days spent without bathing, and managed to look quite pathetic and homeless.

"Er, nothin'. I'll get outta yer way..."

Fortunately, he was a good liar.

This man was quite filthy. Ryxa frowned in disgust. He muttered very briefly to himself, which was odd, but not unusual for people wandering around at night. Then he went on to say to her, "Er, nothin'. I'll get outta yer way."

"Indeed, 'nothing,'" she said with obvious disgust, the way she said it accusing him of being some sort of worthless bum. He sure looked the part. Physically he fit the description, but not behavior-wise. Still, she wouldn't let it go; she was irritated and had gotten no progress this whole night. The judges wouldn't be happy; at least she could bring in suspects. Anyway, he would do to have some fun with, if he proved to be trouble.

As he shied away from her match, she thrust it forward more, to keep a look at him. It was a long match, and would do for another minute. She'd ask this man some questions, but not in this gross alleyway. Ryxa blithely said, "I need to ask you some questions. If you'll step out with me to the street, that would be… dandy." She smiled coldly. "And if I make you, it won't be pretty. Clear?" She wouldn't take no for an answer.

Wonderful. She wanted to ask him questions. He eyed her sidelong, squinting through the light. Something in his eye suggested he wasn't quite the pathetic homeless man he made himself out to be, but it lasted only a second as his mind worked on picking a course of action.

The course he ended up deciding on was the easiest one: doing what she said. He hadn't seen the wanted poster and believed he could still fool her. Unless she had some mind reading powers, she'd never know. Would she?

"Questions? Okay, okay..." He said humbly, still playing the innocent.

He looked around as if he wasn't sure where she wanted him to go to get onto the street, as though he was so afraid she would hurt him somehow that he didn't want to make a single move to upset her. When he figured out which way was best, he shuffled out onto the street, checking around nervously for other guardsmen who might be around. His actions didn't suit someone of his size. His arms looked strong enough to wrestle a horse.

Ryxa watched him closely as he shuffled past, which was amusing to watch. His size did not fit his actions, and as the glare of the streetlights rested on him he seemed even bigger. Not just tall, but bulky. He acted nervous, unsure, and she wondered what he was playing at. That was very suspicious to her.

Ryxa stepped out from the alley behind him, then began walking around him. She glared at him slightly, as if daring him to make a move as she circled him. Her eyes were cold, predatory. As far as she was concerned, he was already howling in pain. However, she was not one to hurry into things (unless her anger took control, she thought sheepishly). The battlemage would savor the hunt.

She stopped in front of him, looking him squarely in the face not very far from his reach. It was tempting to just lunge forward and touch him with her pain-inducing magic... "Your name," she demanded.

Chrishton kept his posture slightly hunched in an effort to look less imposing than he was. It was a nice try and he almost managed, but such a feat just wasn't really possible. At most he looked tired and a little past his prime. There was a little grey in his dark hair to help with that, along with some accented wrinkles on his unshaven face.

He didn't follow her with his eyes, just kept them down on the street while she paced circles around him. Even when she stood in front of him he avoided eye contact by looking off to the side.

"Lars. Lars Kain." He said, drudging up a name from his past.

He didn't see any other guards around or any backup. One quick elbow to the face is all he needed to take her down. Just one move and he could be walking away. She'd never expect it, if only he had that kind of freedom.

"Lars Kain," Ryxa repeated, thinking. He wasn't looking at her, which she took to be from fear, and he had said the name easily enough. For now the mage believed him. Yet, she knew an interrogation such as this wasn't going to suffice; anyone in their right mind would be lying to her, no matter the question she asked. The best route was using one of her spells.

"Look at me," she commanded. The pull to do that would be enormous. It would be so easy to just look into her eyes, let his consciousness go. She shut out all the pre-day noise of the street and concentrated on pulling his eyes to hers. It was well practiced, and the spell went smoothly. All that was left was his power of will; did he even have a reason to resist the spell, or recognize it? If he knew it was a spell, he would have to have some experience with spells: that would give her enough reason to suspect him, and bring him to the judges.

His eyes flicked to look straight into hers the instant she ordered it. He didn't disobey, didn't even try to fight it. He had no idea she was using a spell until after the fact, when he realized what had just happened. It was a bit unsettling to be caught like that by any kind of mental trick, no matter how trivial it was.

She still didn't know who he was though, and he knew she didn't. He had normal, human eyes. Full of life, yes, but still normal and dark green in colour. He looked surprised and confused. It worked with his sharade perfectly.

Ryxa frowned into his face. He wasn't fully in the trance, if at all. She could tell. Well, he was a big man; must be stronger than she thought. He wasn't a weakling like most of the citizens of the city, that much was certain. The challenge gave her a thrill, and she shivered slightly.

The mage broke eye contact and turned her back on him. The short part of her strawberry-blonde hair faced him, along with the length of her black cape. "What do you say we go for a walk together?" Ryxa suggested, never losing her almost toneless, cold voice.

She took a few steps away down the sidewalk, her boots thumping, and then stopped. She half-turned back to him, keeping up a very weak, charming thread of the magic to his mind. Walking would sound like a very good plan, and he should follow without question. However, Ryxa expected him to be able to resist this, since he had resisted succumbing completely to the first strong trance. It was subtle though; perhaps his body would move to her command without him realizing what was happening. With this she would lead him to a quiet place, where she could exercise her magic prowess. To do that would be very tricky with this one, which would make his crying all the more sweeter.

"We can talk on the way," Ryxa said, looking back at him, prepared for whatever choice he would make.

Chrishton could feel the pull of her magic calling to him, tugging at his will to obey her. It was difficult to understand what was going on with a clear head, or even to realise that anything was wrong at all. As a human, he'd had no magical abilities at all and in fact hated magic so much he wouldn't have wanted any to begin with. Even as a vampire his abilities remained generally non-magical. Now though, in the body of a kitsune, he understood it much better. He wasn't very good at envoking it but identifying it was usually a trivial matter. The longer she used it, the more time he had to figure out what was happening...

But he was already following her down the street. Time was moving in fast foreword. When she looked back at him he was like a zombie, lost in some other place.

Go for a walk? That meant she suspected him of something or that she was arresting him. She probably wanted to lure him to the guards or some of her battlemage friends.

He stopped following her in the middle of the street and tried to gather his wits. "Am I under arrest? 'Cause I ain't done nothin' wrong."

What was he doing? He should run, this was ridiculous.

When Ryxa looked back at Lars he was following her blindly, finally in a trance. She smirked in approval and walked forward with him. However, before she could start her casual interrogation, Lars stopped. "Am I under arrest? 'Cause I ain't done nothin' wrong," he said, confused.

The bum had been in the trance but now he broke free, a sign that he would be oscillating between being aware and vulnerable. Her hands balled into fists and quivered as she tried to restrain her anger. Her fury was swift, and she was lost in its drowning power. The mage growled, her words dripping with barely controlled heat and danger, "We're going for a walk, you shithead. You're too stupid to be assuming anything, so don't even fucking try. Hurry up!" With the words 'hurry up' the spell tugged at him again to lure him beside her.

Her eyes burned as she watched him. If he made to move in any other direction, she was prepared to act.

Chrishton stared at her in confusion when she snapped, seemingly unprovoked, and started cursing and insulting him. He had no idea where it came from. She was being reasonable at first, and then bam! The battlemage had gone completely psycho on him. He didn't take kindly to her words against him, but with the spell messing with his head and the situation he was in, he ended up doing nothing about it. Once again he debated punching her and running away, and once again he was following her before he was able to weigh the pros and cons of such an action. All he did was jog a few steps to catch up to her and, dirty and confused as he was, managed to look pretty pathetic in the process.

He didn't like it. Any of it. Her attitude, her superiority, her careless tongue, her magic. His exhaustion, his poor luck, his confusion. It was leading somewhere bad, he could tell, but bad situations were his element. Maybe getting himself arrested for a second time in Marn, now by the battlemages, was the right path to take. Maybe in prison he would meet up with the female vampire again, or someone else important, or maybe make an ally who would actually stick around.

He would pay her back for her words when the time came. For now, though, he followed her and did what she wanted. The less she figured out about him, the easier it would be later.

"Oy, sorry..."

Ryxa flexed her fingers. The spell would last only ten minutes, and it had already been a minute or two. She didn't have the time to waste being angry. There was no way she'd reach her destination within the amount of time she had. Ryxa believed she could browbeat him into submission if need be, so it was time to start asking questions.

"Good. So, Lars Kain, have you heard of the man called Chrishton Radu? I expect a full answer, including how you know him if you do." She stared at him impassively as they walked at a fair pace down the road. It wasn't obvious if she was expecting a surprising answer or not, though secretly she didn't.

"Act... Uh..."

His initial instinct while under the influence of her spell was to immediately say that he was, indeed, Chrishton Radu. However he caught himself starting to say as much and started tripping on his own words, trying to come up with a better response. It was a bit surprising to him to find out that she knew his name.

"I mean no. Never heard of that... uh... guy."

He looked back at her, his brow furrowed. He was trying to figure out whether or not she was going to fall for it, and in the process was starting to look like he had a smirk forming on his face. Having accepted the inevitable eventuality of being found out by the woman, he started to realize that he could at least have some fun with her first. Messing with people was always fun, and he had a knack for it. The only thing about her that intimidated him was her uniform, but beneath that he saw just another human being with mood swings worse than his own and the common habbit of taking everything way too seriously.

"What'd he do?" He asked, knowing he wasn't supposed to interject with such questions.

If she snapped and used her combat powers, at least he would find out what she was capable of.
