Jordyn ducked behind Jarrah when she saw the older woman let loose the pot and send it flying across the room in their direction, she snapped her eyes shut just before the worn metal weapon found its mark and gasped with a mix of fear and shock.

She was almost afraid to inspect the damage, not at all curious about what grave wound such an object could leave, but she peeked at the side of Jarrah's face anyway and felt a sense of relief that there was no visible damage to be seen. It was about that time that she caught sight of the woman lifting another pot in ready to launch a second attack.

Jordyn slipped further away from Jarrah, what kind of pot wielding madwoman had he brought her to work for!? She contemplated fleeing while the two were busy with their stand-off then the conversation reached her ears, the mention of a strangers name, and what sounded like a mumbled apology.

Still, Jordyn was uneasy, more so now that she had seen such an assault by a woman who appeared so kindly at first glance. Shim was definitely a new world to her.

Jarrah sighed behind his hands. "Ya know, Nys...it doesn't hurt to be certain that it is Cyrus on the receiving end of your wrath before you let something fly at someone."

Nyssa lowered the pan hiding her face, her lips curled into something that could be called a smirk. "Don't sound so much like him, then. Problem solved."

Hard as he tried, Jarrah couldn't help but laugh as he lowered his hands. The place where the pot had struck him was a little inflamed, but otherwise there was no noticeable sign of the assult. He was used to being mistaken for the woman's son and having something tossed at him - though he was surprised he didn't suffer more than his fair share of broken noses because of it.

He suddenly remembered Jordyn and turned to see that she was kind of hiding behind him - and was visibly uneasy around Nyssa. When he saw the look on her face he had to fight to hold back a snicker and lifted a hand to cover his mouth. He could just about imagine the thoughts that were running through her mind after that little fiasco, but he couldn't really blame her for being nervous. Nyssa could be a scary old lady when the fancy struck her.

But goodness, what a first impression to give poor Jordyn...

Pulling himself together, he cleared his throat and straightened up. He managed to keep a serious look on his face for little more than half a second before cracking a smile again. And despite his efforts to keep his voice steady as he spoke, it wasn't hard to tell he was trying his best not to laugh. "Um, Nyssa...there's somebody here with me who would like to talk to you..."

Nyssa turned her attention behind Jarrah then and finally noticed that there was a young woman with him. Glancing down at the pot in her hand, she suddenly realized how this must look to the girl. "Oh dear..." She was quick to set the thing on the table and fold her hands in front of her with a rather embarrassed smile.

Jarrah, meanwhile, was still trying to conceal his laughter.

"I'm so sorry you had to see that, hon," she said to the girl. "I don't usually throw things at people, I promise. Just my son when he irritates me, and...well...Jarrah sounds a lot like him..."

A small chuckle escaped Jarrah as he glanced at Jordyn with a smile, hopefully reassuring her that Nyssa was in fact perfectly harmless on a normal day and safe to approach.

The mirth in Jarrah's eyes was more than obvious, and very plainly directed at her when he turned to find her nearly quaking. She narrowed her own orbs at Jarrah, silently scolding him for finding humor in the situation, she didn't think it was funny at all.

He wouldn't be so quick to laugh if the woman had permanently disfigured his face! She thought.

Before she could murmur the remark Jarrah was calling the older woman to join them, Nyssa, and then there she was looking at Jordyn apologetically. Jordyn managed to shake away her irritation and smiled at the woman. "Its quite alright, I can understand how annoyance can move people to violence." She replied, glancing quickly at Jarrah, who even then was smiling.

"My name is Jordyn Maliki, I have just arrived in Shim and was hoping to find some work." She explained and stuck her hand out at the woman.

She had to give it to Nyssa and Jarrah, their little scene definitely worked to break the ice, and for that Jordyn was truly thankful. She no longer felt nervous, or out of place, she felt her old confidence returning and she knew that it would allow her to be herself amoung these almost strangers.

Seeing that Jordyn seemed to be more comfortable with Nyssa now despite that little show a moment ago, Jarrah decided that now was probably a good time to back off. So he knelt down to pick up the pot that had been thrown at him and wandered over to the table to grab the other one as the older woman took the offered hand and shook it politely.

"It's very nice to meet you, Jordyn," she said, flashing a bright smile. "And it's good to see a young lady making such an effort to find work. But I'm afraid you won't find much here - the medical business is rather slow for me in my old age to warrant much help." The idea that Jarrah had in fact brought the girl to help out with the housework never even occurred to Nyssa, so she kind of jumped to conclusions in assuming why Jordyn was there.

Jarrah was suddenly glad he'd picked up both pots and gotten them out of Nyssa's reach. Once Jordyn explained that she was actually there to help out around the house, the old lady was going to want to throw something at him again, this time for implying that she couldn't handle things herself. So he casually headed across the room and put himself to work cleaning up the pots, just as something to do - and to have an excuse to be outside of Nyssa's striking range.

Jordyn smiled, she couldn't imagine being expected to help the woman with medicinal work, yet, she completely understood how Nyssa might think that she was there just for that. It took a moment for her to develop the best response, without hurting the woman's very evident pride or blowing her chances completely.

"Oh, no," she said with a sweet smile. "I am not at all qualified to help with your medical work, everyone in Shim would be far better of being placed in your more than capable hands than mine." She explained. "Actually, I would be much more help around the home or garden, I am sure that you are much sought after when health crisis do arise, with my help here you would be free to pursue you work, or even have some leisure time, which I am confident that you deserve plenty of." Jordyn's smile never waivered, nor did the pleasant tone of her voice change for a moment.

Inside however Jordyn was all nerves, this woman before her had spunk, she was independent and had a proud personality. However, Jordyn meant every word she said, she wouldn't ever dream of taking on work under the impression that Nyssa was unable to handle it herself, no, it would simply be to lighten the load. She knew from her first impression of the woman that she was fully capable.

"Perhaps you need a list of my skills. I do have a list." She added before reaching into her pack and withdrawing a tightly rolled page. "I am sure there are a few things that I left out, but it truly is difficult to sit down and recall every task you complete well, or area you excel in. I have been managing a household most of my life, so many of these come naturally to me, and as I said, with some on board to take care of the mundane you would have free time at your disposal." she was rambling, nervous again. Jordyn clamped her lips together and held the page out for Nyssa.

The older woman quirked an eyebrow as Jordyn mentioned helping out around the house. So that was why Jarrah had brought her here to look for work? For a quick second, she discretely threw him one of those looks - just because she knew he was expecting it - while Jordyn fished around in her pack. He had his back to her so he didn't see it, but she was aware that he could feel it, just the same. The way he was careful to keep his focus on what he was doing made that much evident.

Nyssa turned her attention back to Jordyn again and had her smile back in place by the time the younger woman finished hunting for that list of hers. It wasn't hard to sense that Jordyn was getting nervous, but Nyssa waited to say anything until after she took the paper and gave it a quick look over. The girl certainly came prepared.

If young Jordyn had, as she said, cared for a home for most of her life, then chances were she'd had a good upbringing and wouldn't be likely to raise mischief. That was the only thing that really concerned her, but she could tell just by watching the young lady that there would be no such issue. And with Cyrus having left for Marn that morning, it would be a few weeks before he came back and the housework might start to get ahead of her. So...

Lifting her eyes from the paper, her smile brightened a bit. "You can relax, hon. I know I intimidate some people, but I don't bite." Handing the paper back to Jordyn she added, "If the airborne pot didn't scare you away and you don't mind strangers coming into the house on a regular basis, then you're more than welcome to help out here whenever you have the time."

Jarrah, who had quietly been listening all this time, paused in what he was doing and stared blankly ahead of him. Nyssa actually agreed to it? That didn't take much. It threw him for a loop, but then his smile returned and he chuckled softly when he remembered why he shouldn't have been so surprised.

The woman may have been fiercely independent and ridiculously proud in her old age...but Jarrah knew better than anybody else that she was a huge softie at heart. Especially when it came to someone who was having a hard time and she could do something to help them out. It was always evident in the way she handled her work - and in the way she took in the two strange boys she found hiding out in her backyard twenty years ago.

When he heard Nyssa speak again, her words carried an oddly serious tone. "There is one condition, though."

A little curious, he stopped what he was doing and glanced behind him at the woman.

"If the airborne pot didn't scare you away and you don't mind strangers coming into the house on a regular basis, then you're more than welcome to help out here whenever you have the time."

Jordyn lit up, her face suddenly shedding years and her youth much too appearant. What luck! She was so relieved she thought she would cry, but there would be plenty of time for that later. What she really wanted to do was look over the home and decide where she would be the most help. Oh, she was still much too worried about stepping on her new employer's toes, but she knew that in time she would come to know Nyssa and know how to keep everyone around her pacified for the most part, it was a natural thing for her.

The thought of strangers coming and going often was a bit disturbing, but she knew that if she kept herself guarded and avoided to much physical contact with the distraught and suffering she would develop a natural barrier against the sudden increase of people in such a close proximity.

She was about to thank Nyssa profusely when Nyssa's all too serious voice broke the momentary silence.

"There is one condition, though." Her tone was no where as light as the one she had used with her before, and that alone gave her a chill.

Jordyn raised an eyebrow and looked . "Oh?" she managed, hoping whatever that condition might be it wouldn't be a deal breaker, or be nearly as grave as her shift in mood conveyed it to be.

Nyssa tried to keep her expression serious but couldn't hold back a bit of a smirk. With a quick glance over at Jarrah, she lifted a hand and pointed in his direction as she spoke to Jordyn. "That one over there has this awful habit of teasing people for his own amusement. If he gets annoying, don't feel obligated to put up with it - just chuck something at him. He'll get the message."

Jarrah blinked in surprise and turned a little red in the face. Yeah, he did have a bit of a tendency to tease people in good humor to get them to loosen up, but even so...

Deep down, though, he knew she was only picking on him as a way to help Jordyn feel a little more comfortable in the situation, and he couldn't hide a small smile. "Hey, now! That's not fair!"

Nyssa just glanced at him over her shoulder and stuck out her tongue with a grin of her own.

Jordyn expelled a breath she didn't realize she was holding and lifted her hand to her mouth to hold back a soft chuckle. Her eyes moved from Nyssa to Jarrah, she could definitely see, beneath the jeering, a deep family like connection between the two, and it warmed her as she remembered her own connection with Namad. The memory was bittersweet, but welcome all the more.

When she felt she was had her mirth under control she dropped her hand and smiled. "Thank you Nyssa, I am sure Jarrah will serve well to keep my aim in practice." She joked lightly.

It had been so long since she was able to joke, and the lightness of the situation was definitely a nice change from the tense moments that it followed.

"Do you mind if we look about the house? I would like to be familiar with it when you need me." She asked then, there were still so many details left to cover, like where she should stay, she honestly wanted to stay at the inn for the time being but Nyssa may not have been counting on paying her enough to accommodate that wish, that was another issue left to cover, pay, and both topics were definitely not something Jordyn was looking forward to approaching.

She smiled a bit wider, perhaps it could wait until tomorrow, that would give her ample time to come up with a way to bring it up without seeming pushy or money hungry. Her mind made up Jordyn pushed the worries from her mind and looked around.

" Also, it might help me to know what tasks there are that you would prefer not to do yourself, I don't want to step on your toes, just help where needed."

Jarrah's gaze drifted over to Jordyn, somewhat surprised, when she joined in on the teasing. But a second later he found himself laughing quietly. Nyssa had a knack for helping people to relax whenever they felt anxious - granted, though, it was often at his expense - and it was good to see that Jordyn was already starting to loosen up around the older woman and not seem so nervous or intimidated.

And he didn't really mind being the brunt of Nyssa's jokes. At least it was nice to know that he was useful for something.

Nyssa also laughed a bit at Jordyn's joke, though she settled down and became a little more serious as the younger woman inquired about exploring the house and what tasks she might be asked to do.

With a brief nod and smile she responded, "Of course, I'd be glad to show you around. I'll point out some things that might need doing as we go, but I don't think you'll have to worry about stepping on any toes. If you see something you think needs to be done, then just go with it. If you're not sure, just ask. You'll get the hang of the routine before too long."

Jordyn smiled and turned to follow Nyssa, she glanced over she shoulder to see Jarrah still had his back to them, he was certainly interested in something. Jordyn shook her head and promised herself she would over analyze the details of today, this situation, and Jarrah later, when she was alone. With her mind settled she turned her full attention to Nyssa and the things she explained as she showed Jordyn around a bit.

It was not at all an overly large home, nor was it too small to house a family. Jordyn figured that Nyssa's home was indeed comfortably suited for anyone who might live in it. The home showed expressions of loving care and mementos that meant more to the owner than anyone who might come across them. It was a nice place. Jordyn could almost see her own future home being something like this. She had no notion of what mansions and castles looked like inside or out, so she did not desire anything that grand, perhaps she never would. No a quite, somewhat solitary life was what she wanted. She could not even consider seeking out companionship, for she did not know how her senses would react to constant company or sleeping in close quarters with another person, it was, for the most part, not something she wished to explore.

In her mind, when it wasn't full of pointless thoughts, she made a list of things to do, there was a corner that looked like it needed some tidying there, and a second shelf of things that could use a light dusting....

Jordyn was content with the amount of work, not over much, but enough to keep busy with if she paced herself, and she would also have plenty of free time to work on her portraits and landscapes if the mood struck her. It would no doubt be a good arrangement, she only hoped that she could be useful enough to Nyssa to return this monumental favor of employment the woman had so willingly agreed to.

Jarrah waited until the women headed for another area of the house before he shifted his attention elsewhere. He had half a notion to head home himself, since things seemed to be under control where Jordyn and Nyssa were concerned. But it wasn't like he had anything else to do for the day or anywhere to be, so he supposed it couldn't hurt to hang around.

Besides, Nyssa would probably want to chew him out if he just left. And Jordyn probably wouldn't much appreciate it if he just dumped her off in the older woman's lap, so to speak. So he wandered over to the next room and flopped into a chair near the front door to wait for the ladies to finish their little tour.

Once she was pretty much finished showing Jordyn around the place, Nyssa paused and leaned some of her weight against the nearest chair. The knee joint she injured a few years prior had decided to act up today, and it was becoming a little difficult to move around at the moment. "I'm sorry, dear, but I need to stop walking for a bit. Why don't we sit down and talk, get to know each other a little?"

Jordyn nodded with a smile and took a seat across from Nyssa. Once seated she looked around her again and gave a little smirk, she liked it here. Returning her attention to Nyssa she said. "Namad, my caretaker had bad knees, injured in some battle or another." Her comment was spoken softly, and her voice caught slightly on the name she spoke. "He used to make a paste from ground fresh mint and pepper, he swore by it, and after a day of shuffling around the house with it on his knees he was right as can be."

Jordyn gave a slight shrug. "He taught me so much, I honestly don't know how I managed to stuff it all into my brain. In the end though, I felt like there was so much more left he could have taught me." Like about people, how to act around them, what to expect, he could have taken me into the village no and then so that I wouldn't feel so anxious now, he could have taught me how to cope with being so alone. Jordyn's thoughts became erratic and with them came the dull throb again. She frowned for a moment in concentration, and when the pain passed she smiled as if nothing had happened.

"I think I am going to like working for you Ma'am." she offered, and taking care of someone again, she added silently.

Nyssa listened quietly as Jordyn spoke about this Namad, chin resting in her hand, with a slight smile on her face. Although, if one were to look closely, a slight hint of something that could almost be classified as sadness could be seen.

The tone in the girl's voice...it was one that Nyssa was, unfortunately, quite familiar with. It was clear that this caretaker Jordyn spoke of was no longer alive. And chances were good that her parents weren't, either, considering she was here in town on her own rather than with them. Given her line of work, Nyssa dealt with a number of people who were put in similar positions. Generally she would try to distance herself from such situations whenever she came across them, as one has to be able to do in order to be a successful medic.

But she was finding it much more difficult to do as she grew older. Especially when those left behind were so young.

Her thoughts drifted back to the matter at hand and her smile brightened again at Jordyn's last remark. "Well, thank you. And I'm sure I'll enjoy having you around. It'll be nice to have another woman in the house for a change."

It was now well into the early hours of the evening, and if Nyssa was anything at all like Namad she would soon want to retire. Jordyn rubbed her palms over her legs and smiled warmly at the older woman. "Well, the hour grows late, and I am sure you are looking forward to winding down a bit, I have a room for the evening at the inn, if you have need of me." She said while rising.

She rolled her shoulders slightly, noticing the tension between them gone after having a chat with Nyssa. She was likely a natural healer. "When should I report back to you Ma'am"?" She asked.

It was amazing how small a change in her circumstance could brighten her future, even if it were only temporary, no doubt there would come a time when Nyssa would no longer need her services, hopefully by then Jordyn would have saved enough to secure a small place of her own.
