-Introduction of Jordyn-Maliki Grace-
Wind-blown and soaking to the bone, Jordyn, stepped into the well maintained Red Chalice, and pushed the wet auburn tendrils from her face with a huff. After a day of walking in the rain and having multiple doors shut in her face, she finally resolved to spend what little money she had on a warm meal and a decent bed. Tomorrow would be soon enough to resume her search for work.
Her weary blue eyes grew round as they became accustomed to the low light, she had never in her life dreamed of such a clean and richly furnished place. Perhaps to others the Red Chalice would appear nice, but to Jordyn it was all that was grand and splendid. She shifted from one foot to the other, suddenly painfully aware of how out of place she must seem. Her hands fluttered with nervousness as a few of the patrons turned their gazes toward her curiously. The examination only lasted a fraction of a moment but it felt like it was a lifetime before attentions were returned to meals and conversations.
Jordyn drew in a deep breath and ran her hands over the rags she wore, she wished she had something nicer, something more like the finely crafted garments that she was now looking at on the others in the room.. With a silent sigh of resignation she shrugged off her misgivings and stepped further into the tavern. It wouldn't do to stand in the entrance still as can be and call more attention to herself.
She crossed the buzzing room, glad suddenly for the low light, and pulled an empty wooden chair away from the table. Jordyn nearly groaned with relief as she sank down onto the hard surface and scrapped closer to the table. Setting her pack beneath her feet she turned an unsure smile to the server.
"If its no trouble I will have whatever the cook has prepared." She informed lightly, hoping that whatever that was it was within her ability to pay for it.
A short time later she sat at her table of one with a steaming bowl of porridge before her and a key for a room upstairs. Surprisingly enough she still had a few coins to spare, that alone was enough to lighten her mood a great measure.
The porridge was by no means a grand meal, but it was hot, and it filled her protesting belly easily enough. As she ate Jordyn reflected on her plan. It really was not much of a plan at all, she needed work, and she needed it fast. She had never worked for pay, not a day in her life had she been expected to. She had been well cared for, though her family had been nearly as poor as one could be without being homeless, yet they had always survived. Now here she was alone, and her survival depended solely on all of the things she had learned from her parents and Namad. It struck fear in her heart, yet she knew, without a doubt, she could manage. All that was needed was someone to give her a chance. Surely there would be work for her here, she was useful with all household tasks and gardening, and if it came down to it she could set up in the street and petition passerby to purchase a drawing from her.
Yes, that was a good plan. Jordyn wiped her finger around her now empty bowl to capture the last drop of food and popped it into her mouth. She settled back in her chair comfortably and turned her gaze to the window. It was still daylight, she could return to her hunt for work, or perhaps explore a bit more of the Village.

Re: Unraveled
Footsteps could be heard making their way down from upstairs, and after a moment Jarrah appeared in the staircase, in the process of replacing a few things into the bag thrown over his shoulder. The infant daughter of a couple who were passing through town had come down sick with a severe fever, so the innkeeper had sent one of his staff to fetch the medic to handle the situation.
Jarrah paused at the bottom stair long enough to readjust the satchel to keep it out of his way as he walked, then searched the room for someone who worked in the place. He assumed the innkeeper was busy elsewhere, but he did find the lad who had been sent to find him. He gave the young man a quick update on the situation upstairs so that he could pass the information along to his boss and added with a small smile, "It should be under control now, but if anything else comes up, you know where to find me."
As the lad returned to his work, Jarrah wandered off towards the direction of the front door. He flashed a smile of greeting to a few of the patrons he passed along the way, one of whom he noticed appeared to have gotten caught in the rain. He left the situation alone, though - he saw that she had a key to a room upstairs sitting on the table, so it looked to him like she had things pretty well in place.

Re: Unraveled
Jordyn had just made up her mind to resume her hunt for work, or at least ask around for some leads, when a half-elf descended the stairs. She meant only to glance up in a passing way, however, the sight of the man took her for a moment. His eyes met hers and suddenly she felt an odd sense of calmness wash over her. She blinked away the silly notion and returned his smile, then went about swooping up her pack.
Perhaps he can point me in the right direction. She thought to herself, being that he seemed, at least for the moment, to be a kind fellow. With a measure of renewed energy and optimism Jordyn darted around the tables keeping her eyes locked on the back of the man's blond head so not to loose sight of him. As she neared, she rubbed the smeared coal stains on the index and middle fingers of her left hand, not that it helped. Realizing her frantic rubbing was only making the stains bigger and more noticeable she gave up on her task and shoved her left hand into her pocket.
"Excuse me, sir." She called out tentatively when she was a mere few feet behind him. Her belly twisted with nervousness, she was not the kind of person to approach strangers, yet meetings like this were unavoidable for the time being.
Drawing up the the man's side she put on a smile that she hoped would reach her eyes. "Excuse me, sir." she repeated more softly this time. "Perhaps you could take a moment to help me?" She asked. Having been flat out rejected so many times that day already she decided that it would be best to just rush on with her purpose and request, lest it not be heard at all. "I am looking for work you see, I can do many everyday tasks, caring for a home, sewing, laundering, planting, and such." She rambled on breathlessly. "Would you, might you, know anyone in the village who is in need of assistance?" Jordyn finished, she bit the inside of her lower lip as she waited, hoping that he wouldn't flat out refuse to speak with her, but fully prepared for it none-the-less.

Re: Unraveled
When he heard the first call, Jarrah slowed his pace and glanced behind him. He wasn't sure if the voice was calling him specifically, and the place was a little crowded to be immediately certain where it had come from. So he didn't completely stop until a second later when he noticed the waterlogged young lady hurrying her way around the tables, apparently trying to catch up to him.
He turned to face her fully as she asked for his help, and he started to respond until he was cut off by her trail of ramblings. He was a little taken aback at this and it showed in his expression, but his smile was back in place by the time she finished. If this, coupled with her appearance, was to be any indication, then he could safely assume she'd been having some trouble finding work so far.
He didn't want to have to turn her away, yet he could only think of one person who for sure could use some help doing things around the house right now. But he couldn't be certain if even she would be willing to agree with such an arrangement. The woman was ridiculously independent, even in her old age.
"Well," he said, a bit tentatively at first to make sure this young lady was done rambling before he went any further, "I could introduce you to someone, but I can't make any promises."

Re: Unraveled
Jordyn's face lit up with a genuine smile, at once anyone could see how young the half-elf truly was. She felt like giggling, that is how great her relief was at that moment. Of course she knew that the man could make her no promises, but he was willing to at least point her in the right direction, that alone was more than any one else had offered.
"Oh, thank you sir!" She exclaimed with a breathless voice, her relief as apparent as her sopping red curls.
Jordyn suddenly realized how much attention her excited behavior was drawing by the hush that seemed to fall over the room. Her cheeks colored slightly and she ducked her head down while shrugging her pack over her shoulder.
"Forgive me." She murmured with an apologetic smile, realizing how odd her actions must seem to the man and everyone else. "It has been quite a day." she added with a sigh. "By-the-by, my name is Jordyn-Maliki Grace." She introduced herself, thrusting her left hand out as an after thought. Instantly her eyes fell on the stains upon her fingers and she jerked her hand back with embarrassment. "Ah, coal...I draw." She felt like a complete fool. Am I completely incapable of acting normal? She wondered.
At that moment she wanted only to be swallowed up in a hole, how insane she must seem. She was acting like a madwoman. She mentally ordered herself to gain control over her actions and her flapping mouth, as if that would actually work. "I..I am nervous, I talk when I'm nervous. To much." She commented, trying to explain her odd behavior.

Re: Unraveled
Jarrah tried unsuccessfully to hold in a silent chuckle at Jordyn's initial reaction and raised a hand to his face to hide it. Yep, she'd been having a tough time of it, all right, if she was that relieved about such an iffy offer. He knew he shouldn't be laughing and that if anything it was somewhat inappropriate - but he just couldn't help it.
At her mention of being nervous, he pulled himself together and lowered his hand to her shoulder to calm her down. "Relax, Miss Jordyn," he reassured. "There's no need to be nervous, okay? Everything's fine."
He lowered his hand and flashed his trademark smile. "I'm Jarrah Mantiév. I'm one of the medics here. If you don't mind a short walk, the woman I was referring to lives just a couple blocks down the road, and I know she's home."

Re: Unraveled
He laid his hand upon her shoulder in a soothing manner. Jordyn's eyes snapped to the connection, it was not unpleasant or painful, it was just that it was unexpected, just as unexpected as the rush of flashing images that fluttered beneath the surface of her conscience brain. A dull throb formed in her right temple, she had forgotten how easily touch could agitate her senses when she was unprepared for it.
She closed her eyes and mentally pulled herself away from the sensations that washed over her, all the while willing her head to calm. It only took a moment really, most would miss the brief, fleeting, moment of concentration. Jordyn opened her eyes again and focused them on one feature of Jarrah's face, a lightly colored eyebrow. Then he removed his hand, and all of the sensations ceased. It took all Jordyn had not to blow out a long breath and praise the forces above that she had remained calm and somewhat normal through that test.
"I don't mind a walk at all, I see it's stopped raining, it should be pleasant. Thank you again." She replied easily. She added a smile, feeling triumphant, not only in her employment endeavors but because she had overcome her first hurdle. Living among others, strangers, perhaps was a bit less daunting.
Jordyn re-adjusted her pack on her shoulder once more. It was a simple movement, but it kept her mind busy so that she would not focus too much on what had just occurred, to do so could open the flood gates, and she would be susceptible to much more than just Jarrah's being.
Over the years all the attempts to hone what Namad called a priceless skill had been in vain, nothing provided relief when she became overwhelmed, and soon both she and her care taker stopped viewing the ability as a gift and started seeing it as an affliction. It had taken her so long to build up barriers when she was around Namad or her parents, so that they could go on living average lives without disruption. Now it seemed she would need to do so again, but she didn't know if she could, not with so many people about. Could she truly desensitize herself against so many others?
Jordyn pushed the thoughts away. She would deal with what happened when it came along. For now she needed to focus. "Perhaps along the way you could tell me more about this woman." She suggested to Jarrah in a steady voice as she pushed the door open and stepped into the street.

Re: Unraveled
"Her name is Nyssa," Jarrah began, following Jordyn out to the road. "She's an old medic who's living alone at the moment and still seeing patients. She used to make house calls, but after suffering a fall three years ago, she has some difficulty walking and had to stop doing that. But she absolutely refuses to stop working altogether, so the housework sometimes gets ahead of her. Especially when her son is off elsewhere for weeks at a time."
He turned to look at Jordyn. "I try to get over there as often as I can to check on her, but once in a while it gets a little tricky for me to do that whenever I get swamped with my own work. Much as I'd like to, I can't be in half a dozen places at once."
His smile turned into a bit of a mischievous grin. "Oh, but I should warn you - in spite of all that, she's still got a lot of spunk for an old lady and one heck of an independent streak going. If you do end up working for her, I can promise you'll never be bored."

...."You won't be bored."
Jordyn smiled at the thought, it would be nice, if she did in fact get a job with the woman, to help care for a home again.
"Oh, I won't mind really, I prefer to keep busy." She confessed as she began their walk to this woman's home. She wondered about what might lie ahead, she also wondered about Jarrah. He had said he was a medic hadn't he? "You mentioned that you were a medic? So you care for the sick and injured, that must be very rewarding work." Jordyn commented. "Is it something you have always wanted to do then?" She asked, hoping she didn't seem too curious.
The truth was, everything she had encountered here in Shim so far was completely new to her. She had never set foot on a well maintained street, or inside a building with wooden floors before today. She had never met anyone who dedicated their life to one trade before either. In her community people took on whatever job needed done, sure there were those who excelled in some areas, but that didn't lighten the load for anyone else.

Re: Unraveled
Jarrah chuckled a little at the question. He stretched as they walked, eventually clasping his hands behind his head as he glanced down the road. They still had a bit of a walk yet, but their destination was already in view.
"Well...I'll be honest with you," he confessed with a shrug. "When I was younger, it wasn't something I was planning on. With my circumstances as they were at the time, it just kind of...happened, I guess."
For a split second his thoughts wandered back to the reason he and his brother had come to Shim in the first place and the years he'd spent with Nyssa himself. He truly hadn't figured on becoming a medic before the incident back home, and he doubted Kaius had ever dreamed of joining the city guard.
But he quickly shoved those thoughts aside and returned his full attention to Jordyn, smile still in place. "But yes, it is rewarding work. I honestly couldn't see myself doing anything else. Even if it does get a little nuts sometimes," he added with a quiet laugh.
"So what about you?" he added as a kind of afterthought. "You said you draw, yes? So then you're an artist?"

Re: Unraveled
An artist? Jordyn blushed slightly, she had never considered herself an artist before. Her eyes followed his for a moment, trying to pinpoint their destination. "Ah...I suppose that is what you could call me, I have never really thought of it in that sense." She answered, realizing how silly her answer was, she suddenly felt the urge to explain. " I picked it up at a young age, sometimes my mind gets so full, sketching seems to release some of that energy." Jordyn shrugged a little.
It was the truth really, Namad had presented her with her first coals and sketch paper when she was still a child, he explained to her that she could use it to get the bad things out and make room for the good. It seemed silly to her then, but she soon realized that it worked, it was like an outlet.
After some time Jordyn began noticing the substance of her sketches change from dark and horrid to containing the moments of beauty she had managed to glimpse in her condition. It was a good memory, that change, and it brought a smile to her face. "It's a hobby I suppose, I could never truly support myself with it." She added, to keep the pleasant conversation going.

Seeing the color rise in Jordyn's face, Jarrah couldn't help but smile. This kid embarrassed easily, it would seem. Listening to the way she spoke of her little hobby - even though he hadn't seen any of her work yet - he had a hunch she probably could support herself with it in time, if she put her mind to it.
Whether or not the young lady ended up working for her, Nyssa was just going to love her.
Dropping his hands, he winked in Jordyn's direction. "I wouldn't rule it out just yet. You never know, after all, right?" Since they were now only a couple of houses from Nyssa's, he picked up his pace a bit and moved ahead until he came to the woman's front door.
Having practically grown up with the woman, he just pushed the door open rather than knocking, not stopping to consider that it might seem a little odd or more likely flat-out rude in Jordyn's view. He'd never had to knock when coming into this house, so he didn't think anything of it.
Instead he just nodded for her to head on inside, stepping back and holding the door open for her as he did.

Re: Unraveled
Jordyn looked wide-eyed from Jarrah to the open door way,he must know this woman quite well, she stepped forward only a little at first and peered into the room, it was a good deal dimmer than the street outside but she could make out the lines of a cleanly furnished room.
Unsure, Jordyn stepped over the thresh-hold and blinked rapidly, willing her eyes to adjust. The last thing she needed was for the woman to see her squinting like a near blind person, when she had literally come begging for work.
Almost as an after-though she looked over her shoulder at Jarrah smiling face, "Ah, thank you." She croaked a little, realizing how rude it was not to have thanked him for giving way to her before she stepped into the home. For a moment she looked at him, hoping he would follow and stick by her.
It sounded silly, her needing a complete stranger to stand with her before another complete stranger, but Jarrah was the only person she knew even the slightest bit in Shim, and he knew the woman she was meeting as well. Given the facts, she felt her feelings were absolutely natural.
For the third or forth time that day she cursed herself for not developing more socially as a child, this would no doubt be much less uncomfortable for her, and she would sure appear more wizened if she had just gone out more and socialized with people other than her family.

Re: Unraveled
Once Jordyn was inside, Jarrah stepped into the house as well and glanced around as he pushed the door closed behind them. It took his own eyes a moment to adjust to the change in lighting, although Nyssa wasn't anywhere in sight. But he knew she was home - it was just a matter of figuring out exactly where.
He cupped his hands around his mouth and raised his voice, enough that he would be heard from anywhere in the house. "Hey!! Anybody home??"
"In the kitchen!"
Hearing a familiar voice coming from the next room, he glanced at Jordyn and motioned for her to follow as he lead the way. When he reached the doorway, he leaned around the corner and flashed his usual smile in the woman's direction. "Hey, Nyssa! Can I talk to - "
He didn't get a chance to finish, as a pot flew across the room and struck him right in the face. It startled him more than anything and caused him to step back a bit - although his nose hurt something fierce right now. By the time he caught his balance and glanced across the room, the old woman was hiding her face behind another pot that she apparently was prepared to throw.
He lifted his hands to his face where he had been struck, slightly muffling his voice. "Again...?"
Nyssa didn't lower the pot. "I'm sorry! I thought you were Cyrus!"
