Performance Night

Post by Shyael Falanae » Wed May 06, 2009 6:34 am

The Rat & Gherkin sounded more crowded than usual on this particular night. She was accustomed to the noisy hustle and bustle to an extent, but it always made Shyael feel a little uncomfortable and out of place. The echoes of conversation often left her feeling disoriented.

Even though she had learned to live with her blindness, at times like this, she would wish she had her eyesight back.

Trying to distract herself, she stared blindly at the flute in her hands as she began to fidget with it. She wasn’t exactly a stranger at the tavern – she performed here, typically, a couple of times a week, and tonight was one of those nights. But the manager was out elsewhere, so she had been told to wait for his return by the bartender.

Sitting quietly by herself at a little corner table, she found herself wishing he would hurry up. She’d been out and about all day, and she was ready to go home.

Finally her hearing picked up the sound of footsteps headed her way amidst the buzz of conversation. Turning to face that direction, she felt a hand rest on her shoulder and then heard the voice of the manager speaking to her in a loud whisper. Shyael gave a brief nod before the footsteps went back the way they came. This was the part of her work she hated the most - working up the guts to get in front of the other patrons.

Leaving her table, she found her way towards the front-most area of the tavern. The manager had set out a stool for her to use, so she sat down and took a second to calm her nerves.

Just a moment ago she was wishing for her sight back. Now she was almost glad she was blind - she wouldn't have to see any negative reactions from the patrons.

Lifting the flute to her lips, she started to play a soft melody. A couple of other musicians began to play along, and she heard the crowd quiet down a bit. She never had any way of knowing what all was going through these people's minds whenever she did one of these gigs, but she tried not to worry about it. After a couple of numbers her nerves would settle down and it wouldn't matter anymore, anyway.

"Another drink, please."

Alexander nodded at the bartender and flipped him a Bushan as he slid the glass across the counter. Ale--the same he'd been drinking all night. Enough to numb his senses and to return his usual cheery mood. This place made him distinctly nervous. After all, he hadn't returned home here to Marn in so long it almost pained him. Almost, but not quite. After all his life had been filled with nothing but misery, after he had joined the Guard.

That's why Alexander was so happy he had left. The memories pained him. That, and the punishment didn't suit him much. He was a deserter, after all. That was why he had to hide. He chuckled wryly to himself thinking of it and took another sip at the ale.

He watched as a youngish looking woman crossed the room and took the stage. His first look at her eyes gave away the fact that she was blind. Lavender and glassy. Haunting almost, staring at him. Obviously unaware of what was going on. He wondered what had taken them.

The music filled the room and he smiled.

As the music of the first few numbers died away, Shyael heard one of the other musicians leaving his seat and making his way over to her. Lowering her flute a bit, she listened patiently as he made a suggestion. Almost right away she nodded, not really being one to argue such matters, and he returned to his seat.

The next song she played was something a little more upbeat, and actually something she had made up herself years ago to cheer herself up after her father's death. She had never explained the origins of the tune to anyone, but these particular musicians had heard it often enough to know an accompaniment by now.

All the while she kept her attention focused on what she was doing - and not on what she was hearing going on in the crowd. If she let her attention wander, she knew her nervousness would begin to physically show. It was true she had been doing these gigs a few times a week for five years now...but that didn't mean she was used to it yet. Or felt comfortable with the arrangement, either.

Alexander could almost feel the eyes upon him as he sat, sipping his ale, trying to stay relaxed. It had been years since he had come to this place. His appearance and mannerisms had drastically changed. Yet something about it still made him uneasy. He felt as if there were always someone watching him.

Perhaps it was the desperate need not to be noticed that did it. He could never be sure. After all, recognition could easily mean his death, from what he had heard of the man who was now in charge of the Guard. He was still no more than a common deserter.

He clapped politely at the end of the piece and watched with interest as the next started. He let out a short sigh. This was to be a long night.

At some point along the way, as she and the other musicians were taking a short break, Shyael heard what sounded like a bit of an argument stirring up at the far end of the bar. But other than give a quick "look" in that direction, she didn't let on that she had even noticed it. She stayed at her seat up front, kicking her leg lazily as she waited for the others to be ready to start again.

Near as she could tell by the voices, it was just that hot-headed pair of young fur traders that came through here every couple of months. Sounded like they'd had too much to drink and were exchanging heated words about a bunch of nonsense again. It was nothing new, really, so she saw no need for concern.

This time, however, was a little different. Because of her disability, Shyael couldn't see that tonight one of the men was drunk enough that he wasn't far from stirring up a physical confrontation with the other. He was on his feet and getting in the other one's face, dishing out loud drunken obscenities about something that made absolutely no sense. The staff were keeping an eye on the situation warily but kept going about their business.

The manager on the other hand was afraid the situation might explode at some point, so he made his way over to the end of the bar to try to diffuse the situation. He was a stocky middle-aged man with a bit of a limp - honestly the last person you would expect to see trying to break up an argument.

But that didn't seem to deter him, as he got right in the middle of it and butted right in. "Hey, boys, if yer gonna get physical, take it outside, eh? Yer buggin' everyone else."

The one who was standing got red in the face as he shifted his drunken anger towards the manager. "Butt out, old man! This don't concern you!" Without much warning he backhanded the stocky fellow straight across the face. While it didn't knock the manager down, it did send him backwards into a nearby table. A few cups and plates were knocked to the floor and shattered.

The heated words and crashing noises immediately caught Shyael's attention and she tensed, but she wasn't quite sure what to do. Obviously she couldn't do anything about the argument herself and neither was she going to try. But if an all-out bar fight was going to break out, she didn't want to hang around.

"Hey, hey!" Alexander said. As much as he was trying to not be noticed, sitting around while the drunken carousers pushed around an innocent old man was not at all in his nature. He walked over, hand on the handle of his sword. "I suggest you do what the old man told you to and leave," he said.

This whole thing made Alexander very, very nervous. He knew he was risking exposing himself by drawing attention. He knew he was risking being spotted. As it is several eerily familiar-looking faces were staring at him from multiple directions with enough intensity to make him want to leave entirely...but he wasn't going to.

The drunken men said nothing for a moment, then one of them drew his own blade. Alexander took advantage of the man's drunken state and used the flat part of his sword to unbalance the man. If there was one thing he was not going to do, it was getting involved in a fight. He would not risk calling the attention of the city guard.

Shyael was still ready to book it out of the place if need be, but her attention wavered a bit when she heard a voice jump into the argument she hadn’t heard before. She’d been coming here long enough that she recognized the voices of the staff and the regulars, as well as some of the other patrons who came in here less often. She made it a point to remember voices, since it was the only real way she had of identifying anyone who spoke to her.

But that voice was a new one. And in spite of the situation, she caught herself listening in a little more intently, rather than being so focused on being ready to leave.

As most of the other patrons had ceased their conversations to eavesdrop, she could easily hear the scrape of metal as one of the traders drew his blade. She suddenly felt uneasy again and hopped off the stool as a reflex, but then she heard the thud as somebody hit the floor. Judging by the slurred mutterings, it was safe to assume it was the drunk.

The trader who had been knocked over pushed himself into a sitting position and glared up at the young man who had just made a fool of him. He had half a mind to teach him a lesson, but then he felt all the eyes that were watching the alteration and quickly changed his mind. He knew how strict and harsh the City Guard could be, and even in his drunken state he knew better than to stir up trouble and bring them into it.

Deciding to quit while he had the chance, he stumbled to his feet and reluctantly headed towards the door – but not without first throwing out some lame drunken threat that the younger fellow would regret butting his nose into his business. In the morning, of course, once the hangover started, he wouldn’t even remember any of this had happened and would completely forget about the threat as well as the young man.

A short while after his companion left, the other fellow – who was just as drunk but had less of a temper – dropped some money on the table and followed suit. Once both men were out the door, the buzz of conversation gradually resumed throughout the room.

At this point Shyael figured it was safe to head over to check on the manager. So she quickly told the other musicians that she was finished for the night and left the stage, weaving her way between groups of people and tables as quickly as her disability would allow.

Alexander helped the man to his feet.

"Are you all right?" he asked.

"Just some bumps and bruises, I've 'ad worse in my day," the manager replied. He got to his feet and hobbled back behind the bar counter. "I have to thank 'ya fer gettin those ruffians outta my tavern, though."

Alexander smiled a little bit.

"Well, hopefully they'll be neither seen nor heard from again," he said. He picked his ale back up off the counter and took a swig, trying to draw the attention back away from himself. He could feel eyes on him again, and that was never a good thing, when you were trying to avoid discovery. It was rather imperative that no one realized he was a deserter.

He turned his head when the girl approached and flashed a smile.

"Why hello, there," he greeted her. "Come to check on the manager, have you? Well, we've gotten things sorted out. Your playing is beautiful. That is, if you don't mind me saying so."

Alexander's tone was light, a light smile playing across his lips, though of course it would be impossible for the girl to see it. He could tell with a glance that she was blind. Her eyes as well as the way she moved gave that much away.

Shyael came to a stop when she heard the voice of the fellow who had diffused the argument. Now that she was closer and could hear more easily, she could guess that he was rather young - probably not much older than she was. Beyond that, though, she could only speculate.

Her attention momentarily diverted over towards where she knew the manager would have headed after having been informed things had been sorted out. She had no reason to doubt that the stranger was telling the truth. But she actually considered the manager here a friend, unlike the majority of the residents in Marn. It was just kind of second nature to want to make sure for herself.

The idea soon slipped her mind, however, when the stranger complimented her music, and she felt her face become a little warm. It was actually pretty rare for her to get any direct remarks about what she did, let alone positive ones.

Even though she couldn't see, her gaze drifted off to some random spot on the floor. "Um, thank you," she said quietly. "And...also for helping the manager..."

Boy, did she feel awkward and stupid right now. She was so accustomed to just coming into these places and doing her thing, then leaving right away. She almost never spoke to anybody in between, and it showed.

"There is no need to be embarrassed," Alexander chuckled. "I simply complimented your music. Now why would your face turn red like that, hm?" He smiled a smile that would have been charming, if she could see it. "Avoiding detection, are we? Well, I know a thing or two about that, I'll admit." He sighed and sat back on the barstool directly behind him. Yes, he did, and he didn't like to.

The backdoor opened and one of Marn's many guards came through the door. He walked up to the counter.

"A drink, please," he said. He placed a Bishan on the counter.

Alexander's face paled noticeably. His posture became more upright. To the blind girl he may or may not have resonated apprehension. Alexander knew this fellow, and that was most certainly not a good thing. Though the chances of him being recognized were slim, they'd served together in the city guard, in his day. He did not want a confrontation. At the same time, leaving now would seem suspicious. Alexander was trapped.

Shyael grumbled quietly, perhaps too quietly to be heard over the buzz of the tavern, when he started teasing about her embarrassment. She didn't much appreciate it, but she wasn't going to say anything. And his comment about her trying to avoid detection wasn't completely true - she wasn't exactly hiding from anything, she just didn't go out of her way to get noticed when she wasn't working. There was a difference.

She didn't think much of the new voice nearby at first, at least not until she noticed how the young man seemed to clam up upon hearing it. Combined with how he said he "knew a thing or two" of avoiding detection, it wasn't hard to guess that whoever had just walked in was someone the fellow was trying to avoid, even if she couldn't see his physical reaction.

She didn't recognize this particular newcomer's voice, so she couldn't guess the young man's reasons for not wanting to be seen. Yet she didn't hear the him leaving, either. So perhaps he thought that doing so without apparent reason might draw unwanted attention or raise suspicion. That in turn made her curious why he was trying to stay incognito.

Normally in a situation like this, she would make it a point to stay out of things. Anyone with any common sense would think the fact that the young fellow was keeping himself hidden seemed rather iffy in its own right. For all she knew, it meant he was an escaped convict and on the run from the City Guard. And right now she just wanted to go home - it had just been one of those days.

But...she supposed it wouldn't be proper to just leave him to fend for himself... He did chase off those drunks and help out the manager, after all...

With a quiet sigh, she turned her attention back to the young man. A part of her knew she would likely regret this in some way or another later on. But even so, she'd just feel a little guilty if she simply walked off. So... "I'm sorry, but...would you mind showing me the way to the front door? All the noise in here is a...a little disorienting..."

Truth be told, she could find her way back outside just fine on her own. But it wasn't hard to sense the young man's tension and, while she didn't fully understand the situation herself, she was giving him an excuse to slip out of the tavern if he felt uncomfortable enough to want to leave.

She just hoped he understood what she was getting at so she wouldn't have to try to get the point across any further. She felt uncomfortable enough as it was.

"Yes, I would...be glad to," Alexander said nonchalantly, taking the girl's arm and leading her toward the door. He could still feel eyes upon him, and it made him itch. Especially those of that man...the man he knew. The man he knew he knew, from his days in the guard. He edged toward the door and slipped out without so much as a sound. As soon as they made it outside, Alexander sighed with relief as the crowd ceased pressing in on him, the tension quickly draining from his body.

"Thank you," he said. "I suppose I should explain myself, but on the other hand...I'm not entirely sure I want to."

It was always a gamble, trying to describe what his situation was. As a matter of fact, Alexander was nearly certain it was a bad idea, at best. He thought perhaps he could leave bits and pieces of the story out, as he had so many times before. Doing that though had its pitfalls. Somehow it always managed to come back to haunt him. No matter how careful he was to weave a strong cover, someone always managed to find the loose thread and unravel it.

As she was led to towards the front door, Shyael found the situation a bit...odd, perhaps was the best word. Over the years she had become so accustomed to finding her own way around and having to be ridiculously careful in everything she did. But now for once she didn't have to pay extra attention to every step she took. It was a little weird.

Once they were outside and she knew it was okay to pull away, she did just that and listened quietly as the young man sort of debated out loud whether or not to explain what had just happened. Deciding she didn't want to know, she turned to face him and gave a very quick, very slight bow.

"Never mind, then. It's not my business, anyway." She was a little anxious to head home, so her words were a bit quicker than they had been inside the tavern. The only reason she hadn't already turned around and left was because she didn't want to come off as being rude or snobbish. "Thanks again for your help tonight."

"--Wait," Alexander said. He sighed. "The truth is...I used to be...part...well, let's just say I lived here a long time ago. I've been holing myself up in various places the last few weeks, hotels and such. It is very important that no one recognizes me...hence why I left so fast." His eyes were worried, though with the girl's blindness it would be impossible for her to tell. "Perhaps I should introduce myself. I am Alex." He took her hand and shook it politely. "And you are?"

Much as she wanted to just leave, Shyael stayed put and made herself listen as the young man tried, rather clumsily, to provide an excuse for his odd behavior. It wasn't hard to guess that he wasn't being completely forthcoming and seemed to be on the run from someone - not that she cared. She didn't plan on sticking around long enough for it to matter, anyhow.

She considered coming up with some excuse to go her own way once he'd finished but was cut off when he gave his name and took hold of her hand. It startled her a bit, but only because she didn't normally stop to talk to anyone long enough for the conversation to reach the point of introductions. So it always caught her off guard whenever it did happen.

With a quiet sigh, she finally gave up and conceded that she probably wasn't going to be getting home as quickly as she would have liked. At least this Alex appeared pleasant enough. Not snobbish or conceited like the majority of the people in Marn seemed to be. She managed to work up a rather weak and awkward smile as she answered his question. "Shyael."
