Cimri arched a brow. "I get a choice now? Wouldn't it have been better to give me a choice before I figured out you're up to something illegal?" She laughed quietly. "But of course, now you have my interest. My undivided attention. I'm not going anywhere.""If you want out of proposition by the time I am done, you may leave. However, if you speak one word of what passes, I will hunt you down and kill you."

Re: The Drunken Rat
The paranoid thief in Cimri wanted to close every door and every window, then insist on sitting in the most windowless corner for this discussion, but the woman in charge had apparently decided to do things differently. Given that she was sharp enough to detect Cim's light fingers, the shifter had to assume her employer knew what she was doing. For now. Pushing aside her concerns, she tuned in, curious to know what was actually going on. While she kept her face expressionless, her eyes shimmered and her pupils widened in excitement. Of course, stealing a book didn't seem all that challenging, but this was a job. And assuming that this mysterious wealthy lady knew what she was doing, it was probably much more difficult than it sounded. Why else hunt down a thief instead of hiring your average thug from Shantytown? Cimri did love a good challenge.
Re: The Drunken Rat
"Quite the predicament you have found yourself into. What are you possibly going to do now? How are you going to get yourself out of that"
"I don't know, I need to think. I can't think without a smoke" Talion murmured as he struggled to stuff the old wooden pipe full of the newly acquired drug. To insure he got the right high he was looking for, he made sure to put in a combination of both the new stuff and the old stuff he already had.
The task would have been a lot easier to accomplish if it were not for his fingers which would not cease from their shaking. They made it all that more difficult to hold the pipe steady as he stuffed the purple-green plant into it. Tiny bits and pieces would fall from between his fingers and forever be lost in the many folds of his large clock. He hurried as fast as he could, trying to lose as little of the drug as he could for the longer he went without the herb, the less control he had over his weak body.
When the pipe was sufficiently stuffed, Talion ran his tongue over his dry lips before replacing it with the much loved pipe. Just having the old piece of wood in his mouth relieved some of torture that he had been putting his body through. If only I had access to a large amount that I would not have to limit myself as I do.
"You wouldn't have to limit yourself at all if you just gave that shit up. You are so weak though, that you would kill yourself rather then living free of your precious drug. You know how pathetic that makes you?"
He choose not to respond to the demons that taunted him, they didn't understand the pain and how the drugs helped to make it all go away. The drugs were what kept him going and as long as he could get his hands on the stuff, he was going to use it.
With a finger placed above the pipe, he decided to use a little magic to light the thing. What wrong could possibly happen from showing off what I can do, if I can help this woman she might be willing to part with more of her drugs. A small purply-black spark came out of his finger and set the herb to light.
Deeply, he inhaled the smoke. He let it roll over his tongue, down his throat and fill his lungs. He closed his eyes, to enjoy this feeling as much as was possible. Damn, this feels so good. He held the smoke in for as long as he could before blowing out the purple-gray smoke. As he opened his eyes once more to take in the others, his eyes changed from a dark emerald green color to that of an amber-gold.
"So what are you going to do now?"
"I am getting to that." He turned and snapped at the demon iguana-like lizard.
"Quite the proposition you have given us" He chucked to hint both at his altered state of mind and to make a mild joke of death threat he had just been given. As he spoke, his words left a hint of magic lingering in the air. "Help you or die, hmmm I can't say I would much like dying so I guess that means I must help you."

Re: The Drunken Rat
Yyan inched closer to the slightly open door, straining to catch every spoken word. A book. The woman with the strong magic wanted a book. And she sought assistance from the other two… For one so powerful to seek out assistance, and threaten grisly death to anyone who spoke of this plot, this book must be of great importance indeed…
You shouldn’t be here! his mind practically screamed at him. If you value Hyalith’s sacrifice at all, turn and run, right now!
But he couldn’t. Yyan’s hands trembled where they pressed against the wall of the shack, and he knew he would not be able to run without being caught. And more than that… something compelled him to stay. It was not her magic; she had given the others the choice to leave. Why bother if she sought to keep them bound. Something else, something deep had sunk hooks into Yyan’s heart, leeching away his will and tying him to the spot.
Dark faces, dark voices, pain, heat, and then him. And then it…
A wave of sickness rolled through Yyan’s body and rushed to his head. He staggered, his hand slipping from the wall, throwing his balance, and he fell to his knees.
The wave passed as quickly as it had come, leaving a knot of fear in Yyan’s gut. Now he was really in trouble.

Tsaikatlaua gave another leonine smile. No one left, which was good. It wasn't that she minded sacrificing people to her gods (she was, after all, blessed and that meant she'd better start soon with the blood sacrifices, because her gods could get tempermental about lack of respect) it was just that it was time-consuming and she had other things to do. She set about forming her next sentances, her linguistic skills rapidly improving.
"Good, none of you are gone. And no," she commented, addressing Talion, "Your life is mine. I give you drugs. Thief, were you to leave I would trace you back to your home and report you to the guard... or I may just kill you myself. Needless to say, i am very happy that will not happen. This book is highly sacred, as I said..." she trailed off as she sensed rather than heard a disturbance on the air. "Stay." It was a short, sharp command, and she didn't particularly care about how her recruited gang reacted to her ordering them about.
Her mind was filled with curses at herself as she slipped to the door and closed it firmly. Stupid! She knew better than to leave windows open, but she was still trying to rationalize this strange culture. Her people didn't have doors or windows, ones that shut. With a backwards glance at her... collegues... she fell into anaconda form in the span of a second and slithered out the window, gigantic snake coils bunching and swirling.
A man knelt outside her house. She fixed beady snake eyes on him and whipped the end of her tail in his direction, smacking it in the direction of his stomach to press him up against the wall. After she aimed a few blows his direction she morphed back into her human form. "You were listening," she snapped coldly at him, leaning heavily on one of her hips and crossing her arms. "Tell me what you heard."

Talion continued to puff away at his pipe. Purple-gray smoke drifted out of the old piece of wood, twisting its way around his face, playing with his senses and raised up to ceiling.
It was such a nice feeling. Such a peaceful feeling. The drug brought with it a sense of calm that didn't come normally. It chased away all the pain, all the hardship that came with life and in its place was the relaxed feeling that came at no other time.
"You're high, of course you feel good, you're stoned off your ass." This time it was not the voice of the iguana but the Voice of Master. The cloaked demon was nowhere to be seen but his voice was heard nevertheless. He had to be nearby, somewhere, he was close.
Talion tilted his head to one side and stared blackly as the jeweled woman changed into a giant snake and slithered out the window. What the hell? Is she a demon too? He hadn't seen anything like that happen before but if she were another servant of the Master then anything was possible.
"Master, Master if you are going to speak, it only seems polite that you should show yourself too."

The sight of the enormous snake gliding from the window made Yyan’s mouth fell open. He just knelt there, gaping, until the reptile whipped its body against his midsection. The air left his lungs in a rush, and he stood defenseless against the following blows. It struck his face, his chest, and then his stomach a second time, not hard enough to cause lasting injury, but such was the power he felt in those tightly bunched muscles that it probably could have killed him if it wanted to.
When the blows stopped, Yyan’s knees collapsed. He pressed his palms against the cobblestones, holding himself up, and coughed until his lungs unseized. Then he noticed a female figure standing in place of the monstrous snake. Tentatively he looked up, and saw her, staring down at him coldly.
“You were listening. Tell me what you heard.”
Waves of her overwhelming magic pressed Yyan’s head down. She expected an answer, was likely to kill him if she didn’t get one quickly. He forced himself erect, swaying where he knelt, and gazed at her beseechingly. He opened his mouth to show her the empty cavity where his tongue should have been, asked her for patience and mercy with his eyes, then pantomimed as best he could that yes, he had overheard the plot but no, he would speak of it to no one.
If that wasn’t enough, Yyan was prepared to try speaking with her directly. Silently, he wondered if he still possessed the strength…

Tsaikatlaua nodded sharply to show that she understood, another one of Parrot's gifts coming into play. She jerked her head towards the house and said, "Inside. Now."
She'd shut the door and locked it, she recalled, so she took snake form and slithered her way back inside through the window. Going human, she used her long fingers to unlock the door and held it ajar for her new guest to enter.
Talion looked out of it, to put it politely, and there was no response from the cat-girl. Tsai settled back into her seat and waved her hand about, magically turning up the humidity a bit more. She'd closed the window this time, and the door, and was not planning on another interruption. However, if there was, she could always begin the blood sacrifices early and feed her inner jaguar...
She turned her attention back to her latest press-ganged recruit. "Will you or will you not help me to get what I seek?" Cutting straight to the chase was always the best, and Tsai didn't particularly want to dance around the point. Especially, she thought, since this person couldn't speak.

Re: The Drunken Rat
Yyan obeyed the woman's command, struggling to his feet and stumbling through the open door. The air inside the one-roomed house closed around him in a stifling embrace. He avoided the gazes of the two other people he had seen across the street, the woman who felt wild behind her golden eyes and the sickly, dark young man... his attention was only on her.
"Will you or will you not help me to get what I seek?"
Yyan almost laughed, but suppressed the urge with little more than a wry twitch of his lips breaking through. He nodded seriously. He would do what was necessary to stay alive, help this powerful being, and then...
And then? Where could he go? How would he escape this place? To be free of one prison only to stumble straight into another-
No. Yyan refused to let those thoughts run away with him. To do so now was to invite despair into his heart, and he had come too far and endured too much to give in now.

Re: The Drunken Rat
At first, Talion had taken a liking to the sudden raise in humidity. This land lacked the moisture that those raised in the deep forests of the Island were so accustomed to. He had welcomed this change but it was quickly getting to a point that was beyond comfortable.
His long dark hair clung to his face and the back of his neck. It felt hot and wet at the same time. Underneath the many folds of clothing he wore, he begun to sweat. His skin felt damp and itched.
If it weren't for the drug, he may complained to his companions but as it was, he merely sought to make himself more comfortable in his situation.
The robe had to go, followed by the crimson vest and his dark shirt needed to be unbuttoned. He couldn't stand this heat anymore. His skin was burning under all of the clothing and he couldn't take it much longer.
Rather then the handsome body of a young man on the verge of manhood, underneath his clothes was a sickly pale looking body of an overgrown child. Talion felt slightly ashamed for exposing himself like he was but he couldn't help it. He couldn't take the heat.
Then woman came back into the room and with her came a cloaked figure. Master? He looked shorter then Talion remembered him being but who else could it be? How many clocked figures could possibly wander around this city at a time?
"Master good of you to finally join us. Now come and have a seat, enjoy a smoke and come discuss this whole book stealing business with us."

Tsaikatlaua eyed the sickly looking man somewhat warily. Calling the newcomer 'master' could be good or bad--either these two men knew each other beforehand or the sickly one was simply delusional. And delusional could be good or bad...
Tsai nodded to herself, not really about anything. "Very well. Now. Do either one of you know anything about the government in this place? I know very little about ruling systems, and the wards and guards on the library."
She was hoping that they could tell her more than the meager amount that she'd found out. "All I know is there is a guard... gin? Porter, that is it."

“Master, good of you to finally join us.”
At the sound of the voice, Yyan’s gaze snapped to the pale man in surprise. At the offering of a seat he accepted, somewhat warily, but as it was the only chair still available he had little alternative. Had he…really called Yyan “master”?
As gently as he could, Yyan opened a layer of his inner defenses to brush at the other man’s aura. The dark illness he felt beneath the surface nearly sent him reeling, and his eyes widened in pity mingled with horror. He had never felt anything so…tainted.
When the woman in gold spoke to them, Yyan almost thankfully turned his attention away from the other man. He was about to shake his head no to her question, when he paused. A guard… Porter? Something teased at his memory, and he closed his eyes to bring his mind into sharper focus.
White walls, lights sterile and painfully bright, the sound of distant cries, and a feeling of powerful magic hidden behind a surly face.
Yyan strained for it, knowing that it was important and relevant, but he couldn’t bring up anything more solid than that. He ran aground of a block within his memory, and its presence distressed and annoyed him.
The fever frayed his focus, but Yyan considered it was worth the risk. Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly, he got to his feet again and met the woman’s gaze. I think I… The sound of the words emerged like a restless breeze, quiet, hard to catch. Yyan grit his teeth. Concentrate! I think I have been there before. My memory is… incomplete, but if you give me a little time I may be able to recall the defenses. I… can make no promises, but I will try…
Yyan reached his limit. With a soft groan he sank back down in the chair and pressed his hand over his forehead.

Re: The Drunken Rat
Master spoke into his mind, it wasn't something that he usually did but at times it was necessary. When Master wanted him to kill someone or to borrow some of their power, Master spoke to him in a way that others would not hear.
What stuck him more odd then the lack of insults was both the tone and sound of the voice. It was not Master's usual voice. Something was wrong with him. He didn't have that harsh deep sound that beat against the back of his skull. No, instead he sounded weak, maybe in pain.
"Master what is wrong with you? Are you not happy?" With gold-ember eyes that changed back and forth to an emerald green, he stared at the cloaked figured holding his head. In shame? Is he shamed by my actions? Is he angry for my back-talking earlier?
"Master don't be upset, I shall make this up to you." He eyed the thief, who had been sitting quietly in the corner this whole time. Nobody would miss her would they?
"Do it."
"Would that please you Master? I will do it if that is what you so wish."
Talion half-dragged, half-crawled across the room over to the corner were the girl sat. His hands were no longer shaking as he placed them on her shoulder. A smile crossed his face, a large wide smile reviling many yellowed teeth behind his thin lips.
She looked back at him with a confused look on her face. If only she knew what was going on.
"What do you want?" She nearly growled at him.
It was to late, he was able to dig his long bony fingers into her flesh and draw from her the power that she kept hidden beneath the surface. A dark purple-black light filled what little space was left between his hands and her skin. He was draining her of her deep rooted power. Shifter power.
His eyes rolled back into his head and he let the euphoria that was her power wash over him as she grew weaker under him. He knew he could not kill her in this way but if she choose to fight back, he could simply use her power against her.
If this is what Master wants, it is what Master shall receive.

Re: The Drunken Rat
Tsaikatlaua had noticed a lack of response from the cat-girl and sighed, almost a little regretfully as Talion took the initiative in dispatching of her. It was hard enough to find a thief, and she had been slightly relieved to find this one... but then, there was always more scum in this wretched city. She would simply have to don the gold again and do a... what was the phrase? repeat act? appearence? Tsai had forgotten the correct wording, but she knew what she meant by it.
"Thank you, Talion, for your willingness to help." Tsai sensed the power flowing away from the shifter, but realized that Talion wouldn't be able to kill her that way. She leapt forwards in her jaguar form instead, dappled coat bunched with muscle as she dug her claws into the floor. She raised her head and then bit down deeply into the girl's throat, steaming scarlet drenching the dark wooden floors and her own pelt.
Tsai stepped back and shifted into her human for again, summoning enough water into the palms of her hands to wash her face and throat of the blood. There was little enough she could do about her clothing, so she stripped it off and donned a new set, retrieving them from a chest half hidden in shadows.
"Now, let us venture forth into the streets and scout around for a new thief, and ensure a proper look at the building." Without waiting for an answer she stepped out the door, motioning for Talion and the recently-conscripted Xeis to follow.
