Spooks of the Forest
Silas secured Morte on his belt. His hand fell absentmindedly to it's hilt and he held it there for a long moment before grabbing his messenger bag and throwing it over his shoulder, before he left his home, and began to make his way through the streets of Marn, every now and again waving to the citizens he recognized.
As he passed the last of the buildings of the city, he shifted his sword higher, for a quicker draw. Around noon, he had reached the edge of the Forest. He saw an old man leaning against one of the farthest trees, playing a flute. As Silas drew closer, the man stopped.
“Beware, Guard. The Ghosts of the Forest are about today. You may never return, should you let your fool hearted bravery lead you on.”
“I shall take my chances, sir. There is little in this Forest I cannot handle.”
“That is what the others said, Guard.”
Silas dismissed it as the ramblings of an old man and continued through the Forest. His feet moved at a steady pace, making a soft thump upon the ground as he walked. His deep blue eyes kept watch of the Forest around him, awaiting the slightest sign of anything unusual.

Re: Spooks of the Forest
It was a quiet peaceful day in the woods. The deer, Nia included, grazed upon the sweet young grass with little worries of danger from the nearby village of men. Though they felt that they may be safe in the secluded glen in which they made their home, they weren't above keeping an ear and an eye out for danger.
On this day though, everything seemed to be going as it should. The sun was shinning. Grass was moist with morning dew and plentiful enough that none worried about not getting their fill. Even the deer seemed to be in a pleasant mood.
With the rut not yet in full swing, it was easy for the herd to just relax. It was still to early in the year for them to be competing with each other over the best mates. For now they could eat and sleep, bask in the sun and enjoy the things in life that mattered most to them. This was how life was truly meant to be lived.
Nia enjoyed the simple life of the woods, though she had known no other life, she found peace in what the woods had to offer her. It provided her with food, shelter and protection from men who sought to bring death to her and her forest friends.
Men, the vile evil creatures that they were, entered their home unwelcome and brought death to those that they encountered. Too many of Nia's loved ones had been lost this way. She could not stand by and watch as those around her fell victim to these murdering monsters.
So it fell to Nia to protect the creatures of the woods from those that would bring harm. She would help her friends in the only way she knew how. She would kill men, this way not out of pleasure but instead out of revenge for the dead.
Today though, she thought not of death. No today was a peaceful day or so it seemed.

Re: Spooks of the Forest
Silas's stomach grumbled in protest. He had been walking for over an hour now, and if he didn't see any signs of disappearances soon, he'd have to start bushwhacking and looking for the clues. Silas decided it was time for a meal. He found a small clearing next to the river and sat down. He filled up a frying pan, although it was not ideal for making a stew it would have to do. He made a small fire and began to cook his stew. He pulled some venison he had purchased in town out and put it in the boiling water. He cut up a few vegetables and added them in next.
He laid down as he stew cooked, and watched the clouds pass overhead through the small clearing of greenery. The wonderful smell of his food mixed with the natural, rich smells of the forest. He smiled and sighed heavily. It brought memories of hunting with his father rushing back. Tears filled his eyes slightly as he remembered the strong figure of his father.
When he decided that he couldn't wait any longer for the stew, he sat up and poured the concoction from the pan into a large, ceramic bowl. Slowly, he ate it, for the moment, oblivious to his surroundings.

Re: Spooks of the Forest
Nia loved the nice warm weather that came so often at this time of the year but even if it was cold and stormy that is something she would not question. The animals of the woods did not question the weather or why the sky was blue or the grass was green, they excepted things for what they were. Today that meant lying in warm sun, tomorrow who knew what but they just didn't care.
She had found it hard to keep her eyes open as she lay curled in a ball. Such a nice day needed to be enjoyed with an afternoon nap. Her thick brown coat warmed under the bright light above and her nose rested in a soft bed of grass.
Other members of the herd took turns both napping and keeping watch. Those that served as lookouts, stood tall with watchful eyes darting in every which directions. Their ears stood up and would twitch at even the slightest noise, with but a simple flick of their bushy white tails they could warn the others of danger.
So far, they had nothing to fear. Only a few birds and a floppy-eared rabbit had made their way into the sanctuary but they like all the other creatures of the woods were welcome there.
As Nia drifted off to sleep, she was greeted with peaceful dreams.

Re: Spooks of the Forest
Silas stood up once he had finished his lunch. He stretched his muscles, and heard his bones pop. His hand fell to Morte and he tested the play in his sword belt. It seemed fine, so he started back on the path through the woods. His eyes caught movement off to his left, so, with the skills he had developed as a professional hunter, he began to move silently through the Forest.
He came to the edge of a clearing where a herd of deer lay in the grass. He smiled. He could get himself some dinner here. He quietly pulled out his small bow and notched an arrow on the string. He slowly took his aim on the closest deer and let his arrow fly.
Something spooked the deer at the last minute though, and it took off running. The arrow landed harmlessly in the ground Silas cursed and threw his bow to the ground. Anger ran through his veins, and he abandoned the clearing to stomp back through the woods and onto the path.

Re: Spooks of the Forest
Nia had been sleeping when the intruder happened upon the glen. Though she had not heard him or the felt danger with which he brought, she had not been without warning.
The young bucks who had keeping a vigilant watch over the herd, signaled to the others the sign of warning. With a lift of their bushy white tails and a snort that drew the attention of the entire herd, they acted as one in the attempt to flee to safety.
By the sound of the snort and the stomping of many cloven feet against the ground, Nia's eyes shot open. Her ears perked forward as she attempted to frown, an act that wasn't easily preformed by a deer. This was not how she intended the day to go.
With a well practiced jump, she was up on her feet and leaping over the nearby underbrush. Unlike the rest of the herd though, Nia did not continue onwards in the pursuit of another safe place to sleep. No, she hid in the underbrush and watched this would be attacker.
His weapon lay on the ground now, and he seemed to frustrated at himself for being unsuccessful in killing the herd. With what now seemed to be a smile on her face, Nia plotted revenge on this man. No man was going to enter her home with the intent of killing her family and be allowed to get away with it.
As the angry man stomped off in his shiny, yet noisy hide, Nia took to the form of his own kind. The transformation from deer to woman took but a few moments. Her legs lengthened, her long ears and tail disappeared, and her thick brown fur was replaced with long dark hair. Rising up from her knees, Nia glanced down at her now naked body as she looked around for her skirt.
The tangled mess of animal furs lay hidden behind a nearby rock, it was for times like this that she kept the thing handy. Living as a creature of the woods, it was not normal to go about dressed in the skin of other beings but to hide her true self from the eyes of her victims, she had needed to adapt to their ways. Though, the skirt was much more then that, it was fashioned out of the hides of many of those that she had held dear to her and who had lost their lives to that of men.
Wrapping the skirt around her waist in a way that would cover her hooves, she made her way back through the underbrush and slowly followed the sound made by her attacker turned prey.

He raised his nose and scented the air. The woods were quite today, and though he was a city pup born and bred he had decided to come out into the woods for a nice day of relaxation. It also helped that the guards were looking for him yet again. So escaping into the woods was his best bet, it was hard to track a wolf in its element.
The herd of deer had been his target until that damned hunter had shown up. When they broke in one direction to run from him they unwittingly ran rigth towards an even more dangerous predator. With a quick lunge he clamped his jaws around the throat of a large doe and bit down. The neck severed with a snap and his weight drug it to the ground.
With a yip of delight he began to to feast. He normally didn't like to hunt as a wolf prefering more human oriented meals but he hadn't ate in days. Even as he fed he notcied a single doe disappear into the brush and come out a half-naked woman. Luckily he was downwind of her so she hadn't scented him yet. This might just be interesting he thought to himself. He ate a little more and before falling back to trail her from the shadows.

Re: Spooks of the Forest
Nia had not noticed the lost of one of her herd but had she witnessed the wolf down one of her herd, she would have understood. Wolves were creatures of the woods, meat eating creatures of the woods, and as such they needed to hunt the other creatures of the woods in order to survive. And wolves, like the other predators of the woods hunted in a way in which their prey had a fighting chance.
This is what separated men from animals, men did not give their prey a fighting chance. No, they killed whenever and whatever they wanted and gave neither a warning or a chance for survival. For this reason, Nia despised men. She hunted men as they would hunt animals.
No, she had not seen the wolf or heard it. She had been to distracted by the man who had just tried to kill her. In her rage, she might have been oblivious to the potential danger the wolf might pose but at the moment all she could think of was getting her revenge.
Leaving the meadow, she followed the guardsman. She was not being all that quiet as she followed him, if he were to listen carefully he might be able to hear her little foot steps behind him. Part of her wanted to get caught though, it was all a part of her ruse as the innocent woman of the woods.

Silas had just made a turn on the path, and rounded a thick area of trees when he heard the footsteps behind him and drew Morte in a single motion. The blade shimmered blue and he spun on his heels and started backwards. He spun Morte in his hand to get a feel for the weight again.
“In the name of the Law, Show Yourself!” He called out to the empty forest. He shifted into a firmer stance and awaited whoever was following him to show him or herself. He was ready for whatever would round that turn. Or, so he thought.

Re: Spooks of the Forest
Stepping out from behind a large tree, Nia came in clear view of the man. She had seen his kind before, with their shiny hides and their weapons of death. Never this close though had she gotten to one of them before. This didn't stop her though, she would not let her fear of men overcome her in the fight to protect those she held dear.
As she drew nearer to him, She noticed that this man stood only mere inches taller then herself. Short as he may be, his body spoke of a great physical strength. A strength that that she would take pleasure in overcoming.
With slow steps and a shift of her hips, the distance between them dwindled. Batting her eyes and smiling were but a form of distraction until she could get close enough for her charms to take effect but if that wasn't enough to lure him into her trap, she made sure that with each step she took her breasts would bounce just a bit to catch his attention.

Re: Spooks of the Forest
Whether or not it worked for the man in the uniform of a guard, it sure caught Kibe's attention. His lips rose in a wolfish impression of a smile and he released a small huff which was his version of a laugh. He stayed in the underbrush, creeping along the outskirts of the small clearing.
He was tempted to shift back to his human form to investigate further but that wouldn't have been a good proposition for him. Most of the guards of Marn and Shim knew his face from several wanted posters that had sprung up here and there over the years. Its amazing how much trouble you could get in for a few accidental murders and well planned robberies and suddenly EVERYBODY wanted you in chains.
So for the moment he shook himself like the large canine he was and hunched lower. For a large brown wolf standing 5 foot at the shoulder and weighing close to 180 pounds it was amazing how stealthy he could be. His biggest concern was the black collar around his neck with the shiny metal tag. The glint from the item could easily give him away if it was seen. So still he decided he would just stay low and out of sight.

Re: Spooks of the Forest
The tip of Silas's sword wavered as he saw the striking woman round the corner. But, to equalize one tip falling, another, lower tip, raised itself in response. He averted his eyes and cursed softly to himself.
"For Teodinus's Sake, woman! Clothe yourself!" He said, and then all of the sudden, he saw a glint of movement from the forest next to him. His eyes shimmered and he squinted for a brief moment before letting out a fierce rumble from his chest.
"Stay behind me, woman. I fear we aren't alone." He pointed his sword directly at the large wolf. He yelled a loud yell that was so primitive, no semblance of words could be made out, yet it still conveyed the meaning of "Anger" perfectly.
"Come, beast. Your kind is an abomination to which there is only one solution."

Re: Spooks of the Forest
With another blink of her big brown eyes, Nia tilted her head to one side and stared blankly at the armored man standing before her.
He seemed to be taken by her womanly charms, that is until he was distracted by something off in the bushes. From where she stood, she could not see the thing that the man was yelling yet. To have hid in the bushes unnoticed suggested that it was an animal of some sort. No doubt, the man had been furious at losing his earlier target and was now turning his attention on the next animal that he had come across.
Men had that way about them, they were cruel and heartless. Out of anger they would turn on whatever stood in their way. Too many times had she seen men preform such acts of cruelty on her animal friends but not today. No, not today. She was not going to stand back and let a man kill if she had anything to say about it.
The man had turned his back on her, giving her the perfect opportunity to sneak up behind him. Moving slowly on just two legs, this time she didn't intentionally make more noise then she absolutely had to.
Placing a hand on his back, she leaned over his shoulder to get a closer look on what his intended target would be. At first, she saw nothing but the thick underbrush in the shadow of a large tree. It had appeared to be nothing but a bush sitting dormant on the forest floor.
Then the light shifted and she caught the sight of a small shiny object. It appeared to be made of the same material as that that the man wore for protection. Following the light, she made out two dark eyes and behind them a very lupine face hiding under cover of the plant.

This was so not how he planned on spending his getaway time. Hide out, eat meat, let the system cool down and then sneak back into Marn. Now this guard with the itchy sword arm was going to make him have to take another life. As soon as he thought it he gave a very lupine shrug. Wasn't his fault was it? This guy was asking for it after all. But maybe just this one time he'd try and scare him away.
He stepped out of concealment, his fur already bristled and hackles raised. His teeth were bared and a menacing growl rumbled up fron his chest. He was already close to five feet at the shoulder, much larger than any regular wolf he had seen in the wild. His dark brown fur was a lighter tan on his underbelly, tips of his paws and the tip of his tail. Now that he was in the open the collar around his neck was easily visible with the metal plate attached to the front of it out for them to see what the glint had been.
He planted his feet firmly and lowered his head to make a more imposing figure and growled again. If this didn't scare him off then he would just have to rip his throat out he guessed.

Re: Spooks of the Forest
So there Silas was. Standing in between two of what most be the most dangerous creatures in the whole of the Forest. But, more dangerous than the wolf's teeth, was the deception of the creature behind him. The unknown danger, no matter the magnitude, is the worst thing in the world.
The sounds emanating from the massive beast before him would have been enough to scare most men. But the Guards of Marn were well trained. They were the epitome of what a city guard should be. Pure, noble, courageous, most of all, vigilant. He had seen his friends die before the horrors from which they protected the city. His blood boiled at the wolf's futile attempt.
"Well come on, then! Strike at me, you mangy dog! I've faced your lot before, and I'm not afraid!"
