Silas

Post by Silas Mirkyr » Sat Jan 10, 2009 2:52 pm

Name: Silas Mirkyr

Age: 33

Height: 5'7”

Weight: 170 lbs.

Race: Human

Physical Description: Silas is not a large man by any means, but he is in great physical condition. Long time in the sun has tanned his skin. He keeps his dark hair cropped short, though gray has begun to spread from his temples. His broad-featured face has begun to show the signs of age, with creases beginning to appear. If Silas is not found in the Guards' armor, then he usually wearing plain, loose fitting clothes in dark colors.

Possessions: Morte is Silas's prized possession. It is a brilliant dwarf-crafted sword that has passed down through his family since before Marn was settled. The blade itself is a dark blue that has an unnatural glow. The blade is incredibly durable and has never required sharpening in Silas's lifetime. But the main power of the blade is that it glows brighter when someone is lying, which is obviously useful for a Guard trying to sort the stories of criminals, though the glow makes it painfully obvious the Blade is magic. Due to this, Silas must be careful to use it around the other Guards, as to not draw attention to its' magical properties. His only other possessions are a matching dark blue shield, and a house in downtown Marn, close to the Guard Headquarters.

Powers or Strengths: Silas is a well-trained swordsman, and can use Morte with deadly skill. This was gained by partially by his Father teaching him as a child, and then built upon by the Guard Training and subsequent service. His family is from the one of the original Descendants, and thus, he carries a moderate amount of weight in Marn, and has cousins throughout the Government. Silas is also a decent tracker, learned from years of hunting with his Father.

Weaknesses: As a born and raised Marnian, Silas abhors magic, and sees its as an impurity. And yet, he contradicts this belief with Morte, his sword. He uses it out of necessity, although he hates to do so. The fact that it is magic, but is so useful to his work, gives a kind of love-hate relationship in Silas's mind. After a long time debating the issue, Silas decided to make the sacrifice of using the blade, though he is still hesitant about it. Silas is not unbelievably strong or fast. A larger opponent could overpower him, and a smaller one could easily outrun him. Silas isn't much of a brawler, so without his sword he is almost useless. He also refuses to break any laws or protocols, which can be a crippling blow to his investigations. And once you get outside of his knowledge of common criminal behavior, Silas is just not a bright man, and is easily outsmarted.

History: Silas was born to Rebekah and Terapin Mirkyr. Terapin was a hunter, and spent most of his time in the woods between Marn and Shim, or, when the game began to run thin, he would go on long expeditions. When Silas was eight, Terapin began to take him along on hunts, and he began to learn how to track prey, use the Bow and Sword, and all kinds of useful survival tricks.

When Silas was fifteen, he and his father returned from an expedition and entered their small house. What they found would change Silas's life forever. Three men had broken into the house to rob them. Rebekah had tried to stop them, but had then been raped and killed. Silas and Terapin found the men in the kitchen, and in a fit of rage, Terapin attacked them. Two of the robbers died, along with Terapin, but the third got away. Silas never forgave himself for letting the last one get away.

After the incident, Silas pledged his life to hunt down people like that so that no one else would suffer through what he did. He pushed himself to learn the finer points of swordplay, and when he was sixteen, he joined the Guards officially. He has served courageously since then, and continues to be a shining example to new recruits. He serves Marn with every fiber of his being.

Giving a guardsman anything magical is very iffy terrain. It might be okay if it didn't glow when people lied, but that glowing would make a lot of guardsmen want him to leave that sword at home, or not have it at all. It's impure to them.

It would be better to just give him a knack for spotting liars, gained from experience being a guardsman, than the sword.
