Gold-plated

The farms and houses of Shim, a single inn known as the Red Chalice, and an old manor on a hill overlooking it all to the north.

The oddly matched pair, divergent in height and tenor, were, despite these contraries, both quick to leap up and fall in step with the unconcerned Chezak. It was then, tailing on the exiled D'Maroe's heels, that Benjamin noticed, for the first time, just how bloody light the elf's hair was in the overhead sun. He was well-muscled, for one of his lithe frame, and he carried himself well. Definitely a good man to walk behind, given the uncertain circumstances. As for Maeve, well, he had admired her enough.

Sandwheel, on the other hand, seemed to think he hadn't quite gotten his fill of the proverbial siren song; he was doggedly tagging along beside her, front paws curled and arms rocking back and forth, endeavouring to speedwalk two-legged, at Maeve's pace, so that he might look up at her. He spoke easily, despite the effort.

"Ye look dead tired, miss. A bit o' water'd do ye good, if I might be so bold."

Maeve gingerly took the pouch from him and bowed her head once in thanks. She opened it and dumped out a handful, looked at it for a moment, then popped it into her mouth. Chewing daintily with her mouth closed, she gave him a real smile in thanks. What he said amused her greatly, and she was still smiling when they approached Benjamin and Sandwheel. She kept further comments to herself.

When Chezak looked up at the sky, she copied the movement. The sun was getting much lower on its downward arc, making her wonder how long she'd be distracted by the highwaymen. If they kept up a brisk pace it would be late evening by the time they found a place to stay, as long as it didn't take long to drop of these two. Somehow Maeve doubted that would be the case; this whole situation just stank of trouble.

She followed after Chezak automatically and only noticed Sandwheel walking beside her when he spoke up. She looked down at him, mildly surprised, and finished up her mouthful of assorted nuts and crackers before replying. "Oh--" she laughed nervously. "Yes, that fight was, um, rather grueling." The part-dryad looked ahead at Chezak, who was a stride or two ahead of her. "Chezak," she called softly, as if she was afraid to startle him. "Do you have a flask of water I could chase this wonderful trail mix with?" If he looked back at her, she would bat her eyes at him demurely.

Chezak paused long enough to turn and hand Maeve the waterskin he had at his waist. He continued on, setting a fast pace, but not something that Maeve wouldn't be able to keep up with. He didn't like where this was going, and normally would just leave. But something about Maeve captivated him, and he wanted to learn more about this woman.

And since that was the case, he wanted this little side journey to go as quickly as possible.

Less than two hours later, Chezak paused at the bridge just before entering Thar Shaddin. He nodded once to one of the guards there whom he was familiar with. The guard gave each of his companions a quick look over, frowning at the badger. He then looked Maeve over frankly, once as a guard, and a second time as a man. He smiled at her before noticing her eyes, but all he did was cock his eyebrow.

"If you have any magic, it's best to go declare at the Justice Hall instead of being dragged there by one of us guards, or worse yet, a battlemage," he says, nodding pointedly at Maeve and Sandwheel.

Chezak offered a mocking smile and responded before anyone else could. "The young lady is a friend of mine, and I'll vouch for her, my friend. As for the badger, since I live in the woods around Shim, as you know, I've made a friend or two of the various woodland neighbors in the area. I've tried to stop him from following me," he says, turning and looking significantly at Sandwheel before turning back to the guard with a shrug, "but he seems to want to, so I tend to let him."

The guard eyes Chezak suspiciously for a moment or two, before waving the group through. Chezak turns to Benjamin and motions for him to take the lead, allowing Maeve to fall in beside the elf, and taking the rear next to Sandwheel, hoping it will add credence to his story of the badger being a pet.

Benjamin was a well-known face at the bridge, and a respected figure at that, so he had no trouble with the guards. Sandwheel, for his part, was clever enough to play the dumb beast, and as soon as the bridge had come into view, he had gotten down on all fours, handed his effects to Benjamin, and glazed over the grumpy sentience in his eyes.

When Benjamin took the front, he indicated the water tower with his eyes. "I've got to meet someone over there. You are welcome to join me, if I have yet to earn your trust. Otherwise, I suggest you make yourselves comfortable here in town, and I will be in touch rather shortly."

Sandwheel meandered around Benjamin's legs, sniffing here and there. He hazarded a clandestine whisper at the old elf's heels: "You smell like shit, gramps."
