Seeking Magic

Post by Lylessa Uluki » Tue Jul 15, 2008 12:16 am

Availability: Open to anyone until it's full. There's no specific set number of players; how many constitutes "full" will be played by ear depending on how fast things move. New players are welcome.

Posting Speed: Flexible, but with a wait of no more than three days, or we may have to skip your turn.

Characters Involved: Rotiku, Rayth, Garfane

Location: Marn, will begin Downtown, can move wherever the players wish.

http://www.tharshaddin.com/rp/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1787

Summary: Lord Alessar Hornwood, a noble with an affinity for dark magic, has decided to seek some sort of power that will enable him to overcome his former mentor, another cruel magic user.

Hornwood is aware of the dark powers that can be found in the ruins, but he's also aware of the dangers. He's not about to risk his own neck-- so he plans to hire a group to do it for him, to bring him back some useful bit of magic or sorcery. If they succeed, they will be rewarded, and if they fail, they're no loss to him.

And so the adventurers begin their journey...

Other Notes: I'm not intending to have Hornwood be a longterm full participant in the plot. He's available to be used in the story as much as needed, but since he's an NPC rather than a PC, I'd rather have him away from centre stage most of the time and have the story focus on the PCs. Hornwood will mainly be there to help things get started, then will fade into the background.

I'm also not planning to micro-manage this plot. Any plot developments past the initial setup (including story, NPCs, etc.) will be up to the players unless things get stalled, you want suggestions, or my help is specifically needed. I'm just providing a plot hook that you can do with what you will. It's not that I don't want to play with you guys-- just that I want it to be your plot, and for you to have freedom to do what you like. :)

I'd like to, as well. Being a merc is an easy way to segway into this plot.

Sure, I'll add all of you to the list of players. :)

I didn't manage to get a post for Hornwood up last night, but I'll get one done today, and then you guys can start posting.

Rotiku, I need you to make a couple of edits to your post.

I specifically mentioned in my post that Hornwood had not been giving out his name. So could you either edit out the part where Ro calls him by name, or explain in some way how he found the name out? Sorry to be nitpicky, but it directly contradicts what I wrote.

More seriously, you auto-ed a bit by writing Hornwood's reply.
"Lord Alessar Hornwood," He corrected me.
I would let this go since it's not a huge auto and Hornwood is an NPC, so there's more leeway than with another PC, but the problem is that he just wouldn't say that. He is not going to be giving out his name to mercenaries he's paying to do something legally questionable, particularly before he's even decided whether or not to hire them. So while I'm OK with Ro having learned Hornwood's name somewhere as long as it's explained, having Hornwood reply this way just doesn't work for me.

Thanks! :)

(Also, we generally write our posts in third person.)

The Frug has spoken -- all posts need to be in third person.

BLAH! I hate third person, but I guess I gotta do it huh?

As for him giving me his name, I will fix that up too. Sorry, most of my free time happens to be in the middle of the night when I am exhausted and in poor state of mind. Just kind of skip details without even noticing. For now I will just delete the whole post since I do not have time to write it right now.

Thanks for making those corrections.

Also, please don't feel like you have to make a post immediately after the previous one goes up. If you're tired and in a bad state of mind, maybe you should consider getting some rest first. No one gets the details right all the time, and it's no big deal to have to make an edit now and then, but the posts do need to form a basically coherent story.

If you need to take a day or two to consider your post before making it, that's totally fine. Posts at Thar do tend to be fairly thought-out and detailed, so it will benefit you, and make it easier for your fellow players to work with you, if you do your best to make your own posts consistent. If skipping details becomes a habit, I think you may really struggle at Thar.

Having to edit this one post is no big deal, and I don't want to make it into one, because it's alright. I just think that based on what you've said, it might not be a bad idea to focus on being careful rather than being fast. :)

Since this is really just scene-setting so far, I'm not sure whether it matters if you post next or Rotiku posts his edited version next. Ro, will it affect your post? If so, Rayth, you'll be after him, then it's back to me again.

Once the characters actually start interacting, I think we can go with the posting order that's been established by when people first posted. Does that work for you guys?

Right sorry. I edited it a while ago and forgot to tell you guys. You can go ahead and post Rayth.

Right, just remembered I am going on vacation. I leave later this week (I cant remember the exact day, but when I am dragged out of bed I will know.) So when I do not post anything for at least a day or two, that means I have gone. I will be gone for a week so that means you might want to skip my turn or something. If you can just let me know what you guys want to do, then I will agree and stuff.

If you guys are just skipping my turn, then let's start the plot so that something can happen that will let you guys go on without me for a bit. Either that or you can drag him along. Whatever you want.

Hey guys, I'm working a 60 hour week this week and seeing how this is my first post, I want it to be badass.

Feel free to skip me on this first turn, and I'll be sure to have something dope for the 2nd time round.
