New guy with a dillema: Elf tarrot reader or Gnome engineer?

Having said that I would want to say that this looks like a fantastic roleplay site. The setting, the atmosphere (I love the black-red lay-out!) and the size of the community... it's great.

Anyhow, I have a dillema concerning the character I would like to play.

At first, I wanted to play as a female Elf (with a little Fae blood) who possesses Ykon magic. She is able to read tarot-like cards to gain information about past/present/future of people or events. That would be her way to make money as well.
Other then that, she can draw runes (in sand, with pen and paper, in the air, etc) in order to influence chance and probability. No supernatural effects but changing probabilities like meeting someone you were looking for, hitting with a bow, turn around at the right moment, etc.

But then I noticed the Gnome race and asked in chat if there are any Gnome players, the answer was there aren't. So then I thought about playing a Gnome. A Gnome engineer/gadgeteer, able to create mechenical tools like clocks, steam-machines, explosives, etc. He would have his own shop or work in the already existing Gnome shop.
He could try to start a project to restore the current powernet, create a new facility or something else Gnome-ish. Lots of oppertunities.

I like really like both ideas, but at the moment I am totally lost as to which to choose. Any help/tips/suggestions/questions/info and anything else would be greatly appreciated! Which of the two do you think has the most roleplay oppertunities in Thar Shaddin?

I think either could work well. Just off the top of my head your Elf character sounds more developed and like she has a clearer direction, but you could do that for the other character too, so that's probably not a deciding factor.

I suggest playing whichever one seems most fun in the short term, and then if you decide you like the site a lot and want to get involved in a second plotline, you could always write up an application for the second character then.

The Elf is indeed more developed since I spend a lot more time working on it (and what I wrote it just a short sketch of it) while I only got the Gnome idea minutes before I posted here.

There is almost no other information about Gnomes then their affinity with technology, that they are responsible for the power grid and running water and that their is a Gnomish shop in the north-east part of the town (near the power plant). Since this is a free-form site, the other information about the race can be made up?
Like aging, difference between genders, culture, how they actually create technology with magic, etc.

Also, since Elves (are known to) have an affinity with magic are they looked upon differently, taking in note that magic is banned/restricted in Thar Shaddin?
And, for example, would it be allowed to start something like a tarot-reading shop? Would that be considered illegal magic or would it be allowed?

I'm pretty sure I will go on with the elf. I have a way better idea of her character then the Gnome one, though I like them both. So unless I get some trouble at the application fase you will soon have a new elven neighbour!

I'm not sure what's going on... But I wasn't around beforehand and I wanted to welcome the new person...

So, hi! I like the Gnome idea because it's a shame we don't have more gnomes here. They are part of the backbone of Marn, after all. There have been one or two people who've been gnomes in the past but they didn't stick around long. You can make up anything about them as long as it doesn't conflict with anything put in the setting.

You may want to play the elf first to get a feel for roleplay here and get comfortable, however. You can play multiple characters, after all.

I thought it would be nice to give you an update.

I ran into some trouble concerning availability of computers and the amount of work I had to do. Things seem to be solved now and I will soon (tomorrow or the day after) have a private laptop again.
I'm still working on my character which is looking quite promising, if I may say so myself. I am quite sure I have never written such a long one before, or spend so much time on it. All I need to do now is write the physical appearance part and edit the personality part; then lots of proofreading :-).
