Geldenwing squeaked when the man grabbed her arm, in a combination of terror and bafflement. For a moment, she panicked, her eyes wide, as she imagined a bag thrown over her head, shutting all everything pretty and bright. The fairie feared nothing so much as the darkness from inside a prison.
She looked at the hand grasping her, then up, up, up at the man. Another moment of panic, for an entirely different reason - he looked so much like...like...
Gelden's free hand grabbed the amulet around her throat convulsively as she stared at the man. Her memory opened and snapped shut in one instant, leaving her with only tears and a vague recollection of someone male who she'd once known. But now she blinked, and he didn't look one thing like...the other one.
And for some reason, that made her angry.
"I didn't do nothin'."
She blinked again, and her anger sharpened. This man was a liar, even if only in her muddled thoughts. He'd looked like him and he wasn't him and what was that about prison?!
"I didn't do a thing, now let me go! This instant! I'm not about to go to prison for nothing, nothing at all!"
She twisted her arm in a wide circle to pull it from his grip, tears of anger and sadness and confusion all sliding down her cheeks. She couldn't pinpoint what had her temper going, but she wasn't about to try and fight it.
"I didn't! You can't arrest me and put me in a box because I didn't do anything! Did I? Did I?!"
She looked to Illilli for confirmation, then back to the man. She would start screaming soon if she didn't calm herself down or get a slap. She was very close to hysterics.
"All I did was give her a nutcake! A nutcake! Look, it's food!"
She shoved a hand into her pouch and produce another nutcake, then held this up for his inspection. By now she couldn't even see him clearly, her vision was so blurry.
"It'snotpoinsonedIswearit'sjustanutcakewhyareyoubeingsomeaaaaan?"
The last word came out as a wail.

Initially Camulous was willing to put up with some resistance. He was prepared to get rough with them in order to get two suspected magic users into jail, and had they put up more threatening resistance like Illilli was, he would have gladly met that with violence.
When the small one started her protests, he opened his mouth to interrupt and tell her that yes, she had done something wrong. She was using magic and she was a stranger, both things he hated... But he couldn't interrupt her. She was yelling at him loud enough, with that voice of hers that was surprisingly annoying. Before his words could come out she was yelling some more.
"All I did was give her a nutcake! A nutcake! Look, it's food!
He wasn't interested in the nutcake. He knew what nutcake was (didn't like it much but knew what it was). This wasn't about the nutcake, unless the nutcake was her. Again, before he could respond she had the food shoved in his face and started bawling in the most awful way. It made him want to yell out loud, run away, and punch her all at the same time, none of which he could do. Her wailing was so awful and embarrassing.
All he could do was stare, with little rings having apparently formed under his eyes. It also looked as though her yelling had messed up his hair.
He backed away.
And pointed a finger in their general area.
"Magic is forbidden in Thar Shaddin. If you're ever caught using it again I'll personally see you both in jail for the rest of your lives."
With that, he turned around and stormed for the exit, desperate to do anything to get out of the situation.

"Hmm that explains alot about this town then. I wonder what we are supposed to do if its a bodily function..." she muttered.
"Its not like I am trying to do this... It really hurts when my body decides to change on its own." She sighed and looked to Geldenwing.
"Are you ok?" she asked as she leaned down to Geldenwing.
This was definately a strange town and city. Illilli had been raised to respect magic, though she and her family didn't practice it. Magic tended to make a person's life more complicated. The recent events had really driven that point home to Illilli. However this wasn't magic she was persuing. It just... happened.
Returning to the wild forest lands was really starting to sound tempting at this point. She didn't want to leave Geldingwing though. That fairy was a real character and Illilli was certain that she'd be in for some fun if she stuck near the fairy. She just hoped the fun didn't land her back in jail or in some serious bodily hurt.

By the time the man was able to get in a word edgewise, Gelden was actually hyperventilating. It took her a full ten seconds to calm down enough to realize they'd been let go. But then she remembered what he'd said afterward, and found herself even more confused than before.
Magic was illegal? But...
Gelden looked down at herself in both dismay and confusion. She didn't understand too much about how the world worked, or why it worked the way it did, but she knew that she was magical, in and of herself. She practically breathed the stuff, by her very essence - which somehow was wrong.
She looked at Illilli when the woman asked her question. Gelden's eyes were wide with both confusion and shock.
"You don't think he means fairies, do you?"
Well, this was clearly something for a question. And the source of the answer was walking away even now. Time for action. Gelden grabbed Illilli's arm and practically dragged the woman across the bar, trying to catch up to the long-legged man's pace.
"Mister! Hey Mister, wait, I promise I won't cry no more! I got some questions, please Mister!"
She stopped about halfway there, resigning herself to her teeny stature and inability to catch up.
"Mister, I'm sorry I went crazy, I won't again I promise. Please, I just gotta ask - what magic's illegal? 'Cause I'm a faerie, see, a little flitter-flutter, and I'm practically made of the stuff. See my wings? See?"
She raised the iridescent wings slightly, to draw attention to them. They shimmered like tinsel. The tiny woman waited patiently, knowing that another outburst might very well make the man try to arrest her again, and then she'd have to shrink and flit away, and then she really would be in trouble.

The captain had almost reached the exit when he heard the small lady's calling out.
Mister! Hey mister...
He winced but stopped before the doorway and turned around to see what she wanted...
Camulous was a kind, generous, patient sort of man, which was why he had changed his mind about arresting her. When she mentioned being a faerie, it confirmed his suspicions.
Faeries. Pixies. Flighty manipulative little creatures who tended to cause trouble, usually without meaning to, and were never ever serious enough to be trusted. Pure constructs of the astral plane spat out into the material world, they symbolized the kind of tension that existed between the two realities, as well as within Thar Shaddin itself. Just being a faerie was technically enough to get arrested, jailed, and maybe killed for, but Camulous didn't have it in him to do that to a creature he didn't even know. Having never properly met one before, all he knew was that he would be careful not to trust her.
She was amusing though. Had his personality not become so jaded by his months in the service, he might even have cracked a smile at her. As things stood, though, the best she would get from him was a bit of leeway and to not get arrested.
"Yes, I can see that..." He answered, not entirely sure how to respond to the question. "All magic is illegal. Don't do anything."
That's all he could come up with. Don't do anything. He glanced at her friend, illilli, and then looked back at the faerie. It didn't take very long for him to realize that they were going to have a lot of trouble following the law.

Kaven was staring at his drink, trying to block out the voices coming from the bar, and then near the door. Mostly, he was wondering how in hell he got away from the Nymph. He knew that animals attacking her wouls slow her down, mostly the surprise of being attacked by creatures that are meant to be scared of her. His arm was killing him, it was a deep cut, but he knew if he stayed in his bestial form for long enough it would heal. He could feel the blood running down his arm, and he had to keep it bent up to stop it leaking out of his sleeve. It was lucky he wasn't wearing his cloak when she struck, otherwise there would be no way of covering it up.
He thought back to what happened. The animals attacked, and he pegged it away, fleeing on all four limbs, bouncing off trees. To his good luck he had found this place and was able to stay low, but with the noise that those three were making he wouldn't last long.
Kaven got up, downed the alcohol, paid and turned to leave. As he left he walked past those three noise makers, one of them was extreamly short. As he walked outside a gust of wind hit him and his hood was blown back, revealing his still transformed bestial face, it was a face grimanced with pain, he was clutching his arm. Kaven quickly tried to turn away, but it was too late, he had been seen, not good seeing as there was an anti magic cop right there.

When Illilli noticed that the man who had just passed her was not... quite... a man she gave out a small wimper of defeat.
"Is no one in this silly town NORMAL? This is just plain unbelievable."
Illilli looked like she was about to have a break down. The Ale was starting to get to her.
"I didn't want to be like this... sure flying is nice... but this just isn't normal... at least not for me... but I can't seem to go back, but I can't turn back because its magic somehow and so if I turn back I go to jail."
She dug her long nailed claws into her holographic blue-purple-red hair and was about to start sobbing into the heels of her hands. The marks on the backs of her hands were atleast stationary now. They had no more than the "normal" shifting color depending on which way you were facing them.
Illilli paused to sniff.
"Geldenwing, since magic isn't allowed in the city limits... Do you know somewhere out of town we can go until I have THIS under control?" Illilli was looking hopeful though kinda puffy and red and not all of it was from the sobbing. It was a rather disconcerting effect with the electric blue of her eyes.

The little faerie woman stared open-mouthed at the man, unsure of how to react without actually going into hysterics again. Behind her, Illilli was sinking further and further into an alcohol-induced depression, and Gelden could only pat the woman's arm to try and comfort her. She leaned in for a moment, eying the guard and trying whisper low enough to exclude him. But she wasn't a very good excluder.
"I know a place...I'll take you...but we need to know the rules...I promise I'll take you away."
She gave the poor dragon woman her most enthusiastic and hopeful grin, but Gelden wasn't feeling to hopeful. The moment she looked away from Illilli, the grin fell into a confused, hurt sort of look, like a dog whose owner just walked out. She looked up at the man again, bewildered and lost. She spoke in a little voice.
"You gotta understand, Mister, everything I do's kinda magic. It's all woven in me, like the strings on my skirt, and I can't...pull it apart."
She was starting to sink into a depression of her own, but she made a conscious decision to save it for later. It wouldn't do to have two blubbering females. It was hard to fight the tears, but Gelden fought. For the dragon lady's sake.
"I don't know how."
At her last statement, she looked away from him, in time to see another magical being. He had to be magical, after all, because only the most boring humans didn't have a single drop of the stuff in their blood. And that was mostly because they never knew what they could do.
"What kind of a place doesn't want magic in it? How can children play in a place like that?"
Her eyes glazed for a moment, but then cleared again, and she turned to the man and snorted out a tart comment.
"You could just close off your stupid border! Or at least put up signs!"

The captain's attention was on the faerie. He knew what she was going to say before she'd said it. Magical creatures always protested, they couldn't understand how the world might actually exist without them using their abilities, which was a big reason for the division between the two cultures. Thar Shaddin was its own culture, and it was a culture of isolation, duty, fear, and above all it was a culture against magic. Having grown up there, Camulous could no more relate to her inability to avoid magic than she could understand his order to avoid using any.
Time and stress had taken their toll on the man, and he wavered between wanting to help the girl get along safely in Thar, and wanting to thrash her for being what she was. He glanced at Kaven briefly, but was too determined to deal with the faerie to bother dealing with some lowly non-human. Granted, he wasn't human or elven, which Camulous didn't like much, but Thar hadn't quite reached the level of fascism where they persecuted every non-human around. It would be impossible to exist that way - there were simply too many non-humans around.
"You could just close off your stupid border! Or at least put up signs!"
Close off the border? To who? The dozen people a week who actually passed through? Most of them provided what little economy the place still had. The border had closed itself years ago during the onset of the depression.
"Signs." He stated, in a deep, angry tone. "You mean a sign like that one?"
He pointed into the tavern, to the bulletin board where he had just posted the wanted ad for the long haired thug. There were all kinds of other papers on the wall, including the list of laws prohibiting magic.
"Or the ones clearly displayed in every other tavern in the city? Signs like those? Yes, I suppose we should post some signs."
The last word came out as a hiss.
"I'm not going to hold your hand while you figure out how not to cause trouble. If you use magic, you will be arrested. If you keep doing it, you will be tried by the judges and probably executed.
If you can't handle that, get out of my city. Is that clear?"

"Well now, I think we have a slight problem" Kaven removed his cloak, revealing not only his deep cut, but his bulging muscles, steel katana, and claws extended. He flexed, muscles rippling, he hoped if he scared the guard enough he would let him transform him back into a Drow. "You see I was recently in a very sticky situation and had to transform into this to escape, now if you would please allow me to transform back into my original Drow form I would appreciate it. Otherwise, things might get slightly nasty here".
Kaven growled the last sentence, his bulking form and deadly threats made it impossible for almost any human not be scared. He put his hand on his sword hilt, already in a very bad mood; he would not think twice about slicing this guard up, in fact in his current form, the speed he possessed would be too fast for the human to follow. Dead before he knew it, Kaven needed to vent his anger somehow and this human was fast becoming the best option right now.

Something in Illilli snapped when she saw the beast-man place his hand on his sword hilt. The stress, depression, and of course the alcohol she had imbibed all combined with the instincts taking root in her from her change.
"Can't... You... SEE THAT WE WERE TAAALLKIING?!?!" she shrieked as she turned on the newcomer. Her cheap cloak flared open as she raised her wings and rattled them in her anger and frustration. A hiss escaped her as she crouched. He may be large, but she certainly appeared much larger.
With a scream that would have been more terrifying if it had not been so shriekish she sprang and launched herself at the attacking intruder.
It seemed that this time her fight instinct won over flight. As she sprang she reached with her long clawed fingers in an attempt to grab his shoulders and bear him to the floor. Her tail flailed about like that of an angry cat and the sharp teeth in her mouth were well on display.

Camulous's harsh language had exactly the wrong (or right) effect on the tiny woman - she was crying by the time he snarled out the warning. Now she was confused, lost, and frightened, which all added up to her emotions welling beyond her control.
She didn't wail, though. Instead she covered her face with her hands and hide herself from the world. She tucked her wings in real tight and scrunched her body and thought, over and over, if they can't see me, they can't see me crying...
And then the air changed.
Gelden was about as skilled at fighting as a dead fish. And so when the clearly inhuman man threatened, she squeaked and hopped back a step. And then Illilli actually attacked, and she found herself chewing her knuckles in flat-out terror. These were big people, and if they fell just the right way they could crush the life out of the little faerie.
She skipped back a few more steps, eyes wide and tear-filled, looking back and forth between Illilli and the wolf-cat-man-thing. And then she remembered the guard, and she nearly twisted her head off looking at him, too.
It was a brawl!
"Stop it! Stop it stop it STOP IT STOP..."
She rose in the air and darted into the fray, now thinking of nothing but stopping Illilli. She grabbed the woman's flailing tail in both arms and tugged back, trying to use her minuscule strength to stop the fight. The air didn't offer much purchase, so she settled on the ground and heaved with all her might, which of course meant very little might at all. Tears streamed down her face as she begged the two animal people to stop.
"Stop right this instant! Stoppit or he'll be mean again! Stop now, stop!"
By now various other patrons had given in to their own desires and began wailing on each other or trying to join in the actual fight. It was more than a mess; it was becoming a brawl...

Camulous' adept social skills gave away the faerie's little secret. He knew she was crying again, but that didn't surprise him a bit. He'd been known to make children cry when they misbehaved. Even his own men didn't like to see their captain angry, which was precisely why he was their captain.
Then Kaven interrupted their conversation with an uncalled for threat, and Camulous grew even more annoyed. He hated to be interrupted, and was about to tell the man to get lost when Illilli beat him to it by freaking out.
She screamed in the way only a woman could, lunged onto the man, and Cam wasn't sure who was in more danger; her or the weirdo. He was used to fights. Seeing yet another one barely got his adrenaline going, regardless of who was involved. Unfortunately this was going to be one of those situations that was difficult to diffuse without someone getting hurt.
The faerie started yelling at the two, but Camulous knew better than to yell at her to be quiet. That would only set her off even more, just like the patrons of the tavern were being set off...
When he saw that, he took action. Two strangers fighting was one thing, but a tavern full of his own citizens, each of which knew exactly who he was, was entirely unacceptable. Camulous drew his gun and pointed it at the first man to approach Illilli and Kaven.
BLAM
The shot cut through all the yelling in the tavern with an ear-shattering noise that would impress a mage. It was enough to get everyones attention, particularly the man Camulous had just shot who, once he'd realized that there was a gaping, bleeding hole in his leg, started whimpering pathetically in pain. Camulous stared back at the rest of the patrons, eyes wide and full of promise for the next idiot who thought he could cause trouble in the presence of the captain of the guard.

Kaven had his attention focused solely on the guard, when he heard the scream from the winged women, and only saw her coming at him at the last second and had no chance to move out of the way. His face was one of shock and surprise when he tried to put his hands up to stop her. It was an attempt in vain, however as she hit him full force and sent him flying into the wall of the Inn.
The outer wall had not been too badly damaged, but some of the bricks had been broken, with one or two deciding that this was the moment to bounce off Kaven’s head. He staggered to his feet with all the speed of an eighty-year-old human with crutches. “Urrhghhgh”. Kaven tried to clear the pounding in his head by rubbing it, with no apparent effect. Then the sudden gunshot from the guard at first accentuated the pounding in his head, but also managed to jerk him back to reality, at least enough to clear his head.
The guard was holding the gun, Kaven began to realize the trouble he was in, a gun, and a woman who was very angry indeed, “Please” was all he could manage at first, he was still quite groggy, “I really don’t want to fight. I just managed to escape a Nymph and a Vampire after nothing but blood” He held up a hand in an attempt to show he didn’t want a fight, “I didn’t mean what I said earlier, I was just angry, you know…not thinking straight!” Kaven looked up at her, hoping she would leave him alone.

Illilli started when she heard the crack of the gnomish pistol her eyes going wide. Her eyes bugged and her intoxicated state made itself known with a resounding belch redolent of the rot-gut ale she had been imbibing.
"Oh, yuck... Excuse me." She yawned and finally noticed that Geldenwing was trying to get her attention. She moved cautiously away from the beast man and sat on the floor of the tavern next to Geldenwing her hands on her knees and her legs in the shape of a W with her tail wrapped around her. Her wings were once again stored beneath her cloak.
"Rude wasn't he... and what on Pal Tahrenor was that noise?" she hiccuped and swayed slightly.
