Thelonius Gant

Post by Thelonius Gant » Sun Feb 17, 2008 8:08 pm

Player Name: Ninja Bob (?)

Name: Thelonius Gant
Age: 30
Race: Human
Occupation: Guardsman

Height: 5' 10"

Weight: 185

Physical Description:

When Gant is not wearing his armour he is a decidedly average looking man. He has a dull grey eyes, stubble and short brown hair which manages to always looked tossed regardless of the face he spends most of the day wearing a helmet. You could say that Thelonius Gant has chiselled features but if you did you'd have to mention that the sculptor wasn't very good as for some his face that seems to have been set into a look of vague concentration or quite possibly discomfort.

When off duty Gant almost always appears scruffy and gives the distinct impression that he only got up five minutes before you met him. When he's on duty he still appears scruffy but this is more of an achievement due to the fact he's wearing the standard issue full body armour of a Guardsman.

His armour remains serviceable but at this point it's quite scuffed, dented and there are even sections which retain black scorch marks from incident with a gnomish pistol. Thelonius keeps meaning to clean up the armour but somehow it always slips his mind. The armour in conjunction with the fact that no one slouches quite like Gant have ensured that he is an easily recognisable figure on the streets of his district.

While Thelonius is far from muscular but he does leave you with the impression that he's quite solid. His occupation and desire to stay alive have conspired to create physique best described as the awkward middle ground between muscle bound and lithe. Admittedly, it's not as impressive as either but it does mean that he's relatively well rounded when it comes to a fight, as it so often does.

For a guard Gant is surprisingly scar free. In his time he's had broken bones and more than a few black eyes but generally these have made little impact on the man, except uncanny ability to be able to tell when a storm is coming by the pain in his left arm.

Gant weaponry is rarely anything other than the standard issue mace or sword. For a while he had a gnomish pistol but after a rather unfortunate and painful incident he has promised not to go near the things again. He tends to favour the mace more than any other weapon but often situation he finds himself need more than a good thump to resolve them and as such is often forced to carry a sword. Once again this is a standard issue piece of equipment but unlike the rest of Gant's stand issue equipment the sword actually looks well maintained. Perhaps this is because it spends a great deal of it's time in its sheath.

Possessions: Apart from his armour and weaponry, which technically aren't even his, all Thelonius carries around are matches, cigarettes and a handful of Bishani. He owns a small miserable flat in the residential area of the city with very little of worth to be found inside. He does have some money but even he's not sure of how much or were it's all hidden. Suffice to say he's unlikely to discover a great fortune any day soon.

Powers or Strengths:

Agility: Even wearing whilst wearing armour Gant remains surpassingly nimble. He has excellent reflexes, superb balance and on a good day can put even put the elven members of the guard to shame. Admittedly he can't do anything spectacular but because it does mean on average he hits people more than they it him and thanks to his other talents Thelonius' first hit often can often be the last hit.

Unarmed combat: Thelonius’ swordsmanship will never be celebrated in song and story his ability incapacitate an opponent in hand to hand is already the basis for many colourful tale told in the taverns of Marn. Thelonius is a graduate from a school of fighting that considers throwing dirt in your opponents eyes to be high brow and as such those he fights will often be walking funny for a few days even if they win the fight. Gant is an opportunist and will use anything he can find to his advantage be it his surroundings or some piece of knowledge he's not supposed to have. For Gant considers off limit is losing and so he acts accordingly.

Sensible: Gant likes to remains objective at all times and as such tends to ignore concepts like honour and revenge. Thelonius places a great deal of value on his own life and as such he is cautious about must situation and has no qualms about running away when things looks bad. Many assume that Gant is self serving coward because of this but in reality Gant is more than willing to do the right thing, he just wants to ensure he'll be alive to get credit for it.

Persuasive: Thelonius Gant likes to talk and often people like to listen to him. Lies, deceit and treachery are certainly not off limits when Thelonius is trying to win someone’s trust but more often than not it's the simple fact that he almost always speaks his mind. People often find it easy to listen to a man like Gant as he always seems to be making sense. Gant resolves most situations with talking, however it is worth mention that in a lot of these situations he simply talks a lot until he gets a good chance to hit someone.

Weaknesses

Talking: Thelonius Gant likes to talk but often his superiors don't like to hear it. Despite being a member of the city guard for many years Gant still has a very poor grasp on what is appropriate when speaking to a superior officer. He seems to lack some very important social skills and as a result of this his relationship with other are often quite strained.

Apathy: While technically Thelonius is a good man it takes very little to get him disheartened. When he first joined the city guard he had quite high expectations but unfortunately arresting the starving and the homeless never quite figured into them.

Mistrust: Gant has a pathological dislike for anyone who isn’t human, a trait he undoubtedly inherited from his father. However, unlike his father a part of Gant realises that such an attitude amounts to little more than pointless bigotry but unfortunately at this point it’s too ingrained in his personality to make much of a difference. What little censorship Gant exercises when dealing with others is completely absent when confronted with non-humans and more often than not he’s notably hostile toward them.

Swordsmanship: Thelonius has never really been good with a sword and when confronted with a skilled opponent he is probably more likely to injure himself than he is to injure his opponent. He understands the basics of it all but when it comes to the execution of it all Thelonius is slow and unwieldy.

History:

There is little of interest to be found in the history of Thelonius Gant. The youngest of Vacin and Aliera Gant's three sons Thelonius had a relatively comfortable childhood, by the standards of Thar Shaddin at least. He never really knew his mother, she died not long after his birth, but his father is perhaps the man most responsible for shaping Thelonius into the man he is today.

Vacin Gant was a strict militaristic man, a corporal in the City guard who had decided long ago that his children would follow in his footsteps. The time he spent with his family was either devoted to training his sons or “educating” them about the city. Unfortunately, Vacin Gant was a poor role model as even within the ranks of City guard he was renowned for excessive violence and drinking. Thelonius probably suffered the most because of these things, the youngest of Vacin’s sons did not seem to be taking after his father in terms of stature, but none the less Thelonius worshipped his father.

Like his brothers Thelonius joined the city guard as soon as he was able but unlike his brothers he failed to progress through the ranks. Thelonius’ brothers mirrored their father in the efficiency and brutality in their work and they were rewarded accordingly. Unfortunately while Thelonius did the work quite well but that didn’t little to change the fact that ability to impress superiors was dwarfed by his ability to irritate them. For several years low Thelonius has languished in the lowest ranks of the City Guard assigned to duties either too dangerous or too boring for other men. Thelonius has managed to survive all this but to this point all he's really done in his life is survive.

Vacin Gant death four years ago in a “magic related incident” and since then Thelonius has redoubled his efforts to emulate his father. As of yet he’s only managed to adopt his fathers drinking habits as his fathers style as a guard is something that doesn’t sit well with him. To this day Thelonius has never taken a bribe, even though his abysmal home in the residential district of Marn makes it abundantly clear he could do with some extra money, and only uses excessive force if he really doesn’t like the person he’s dealing with. Thelonius is a relatively good man, a rarity in the lower ranks of the city guard, who performs his duties for the good of Marn but even so often his only reason for getting up in the morning in that his bed is quite uncomfortable.
