Really? I'm glad to hear that. I really try, and I'm happy someone was convinced :D But anyway, I think I've said before, I thought you were a guy, too, since you wrote for Julen. So we're even :P
Ryxa's hot! You watch your mouth!
Haha, Frug likes masculine women! Just kidding... Yeah, I really try to make her hott. Again, I'm glad I'm convincing!

I've done some fan fiction writing in my time, I will confess. I'm mainly written X-Files and Harry Potter stuff, though I did have a funny (at least to me) Underworld story going on that I actually kind of liked and am saddened that I can no longer find and never finished.

There are really two things I do with fan fic. One is that I'll get interested in a minor character who has some level of development but is not fleshed out enough to suit my obsessive standards, so I'll write some fiction stuff of my own to fill in the gaps. I don't think I've ever written a serious fan fiction about a major character simply because so much exists about them in the original source, I see no point in adding to it. I also tend not to mix invented and canon characters from any source. I have no idea why, it's just not an idea that appeals to me. I'll either write a completely original story or use all canon characters, with no overlap.

The other thing I do with fan fic is I really enjoy parody, satire, absurd irony, etc. I haven't really done much of that at Thar-- my character tends to be pretty serious, so my writing is too-- but comedy is a love of mine. In addition to the aforementioned Underworld story, I've written a couple of humorous (again, to me) X-Files fics, and a Harry Potter parody story.

I haven't done much actual posting of my fan fic. I usually just pass it around to my friends. I have posted three of my Harry Potter stories, though, and people have liked them, so I might do more at some point.

I don't tend to read a lot of fan fic, just because frankly so much of it is absolute garbage. I used to read a lot more of it, but I've lost the patience to sift through really lame stuff to find the gems. Those gems absolutely do exist, but I'm too cynical to be a gem hunter much these days.

One other thing that stands in the way of my fan fic reading is my lack of belief in and patience with teenage true love and romance. I just find stories about it rather pointless. The don't offend me, but I can't be bothered with stories that are solely driven by teenage crushes and affairs. So... that pretty much eliminates most of the Harry Potter fan fic oeuvre right off the bat for me. ;)

I'd like to read some Firefly fiction, but I'm scared. So much has to go right with it, and there are so many great characters who have to be captured exactly. I just don't trust an amateur author to hit the right notes.

I tend to read fan fic, now, based on the recommendations of others rather than searching for it myself. And if you recommend it, I may or may not read it.

Why?

Because I am a stylistic snob. I am a preachy harpy with unreasonably high standards.

But that is who I am. :D

Read Volk's work, the chick I recommended, and let me know what you think. Someone with high standards is the best kind of critic.

Millennium (if you're familiar with the show and enjoy the writing, this one is pretty rough to read, actually): http://members.shaw.ca/sylviavolk/Millennium.htm

I started out writing a fanfic with a character who turned into an RP character who has now been RP'd for the last hum... 3 years. She's on hiatus at moment as we opened the RP to others who then flaked out on us and so we lost a little steam, got distracted by other characters, and what not. I'm sure we'll resume again.

Happy to share to those who want to read both the fanfic start and the RP.

So I bought the Firefly series and liked it even more than Serenity. My wife totally fell in love with the characters... So does anyone know of any fanfic out there... Good Fanfic.

I am sure there's some out there. I thought Julen mentioned it in one of the posts here.

That show was brilliant!

I need to watch it again.

I should buy that, too!
Oh, and Jen, I agree the yaoi X just doesn't do it for me, either.

I used to write loads of fic, now I mostly read. Biiig slash fan.

House MD

Good Omens
(A Neil Gaiman/Terry Prattchet collaborative novel about the end of the world, featuring a very slashy angel and demon)

and Torchwood (spin-off od Doctor Who, slash comes as canon).

Now I'm concentrating on original writing... I'm sending my detective show to the BBC as soon as I get some episodes done, and I've got a 10-minute play featuring in a local Literature Festival later this month! :D

I love Jack! When he kissed The Doctor, I actually cheered. Haven't ever seen Torchwood, unfortuntately -- I don't think it's been shown in the US. But I heard that they really play down his bisexuality, which I think is too bad. If you could recommend any particularly good fan fics, I'd appreciate it.

Good luck with the detective show! And congratulations on the play!

Well, you could say Jack's bisexuality has been played down - but only because he hasn't yet snogged a girl this series (two guys, one of whom is almost a proper boyfriend), but we're only on episode four or something. The rest of the team make up for it - they're pretty much all varying degrees of bisexual with the possible exception of Gwen, who only snogs alien girls under sexy mind control(tm).

It's good watching, but a little different from Doctor Who - there's more humour, a lot more sex, and a different dynamic that comes from having a regular team of five instead of just Doctor and assistant. It also takes itself a lot less seriously, hence 'sexy mind control' and all the rest of it.

I'll link some fics when I get home - can't access them here. Also there may be the actual episodes floating around online, I think they have them at Youtube. With it being the BBC, nobody actually cares all that much.

I love Torchwood. You can see it on BBC America - digital cable.

Yeah, I applauded and cheered when Jack kissed Captain John at the end of Season 1. BUTTTT In Season 2, episode 1 he hit on Gwen, hit on Ianto and asked him out on a date who strangely enough accepted, and then kissed James Marsters (Spike from Buffy sans the bleached hair), too (aka John Harper). Frankly, I'm bored by it now.

I still like the show, but I'm glad episode 3 isn't about Gwen, Owen, or Jack being a 'ho. :P

Frankly, if that kind of plotline bores you, you're better off with Doctor Who than Torchwood. I love it, but cheesy, campy loosely alien-related plots that don't detract from the real plotline of how everyone being a ho is what Torchwood is now, and it's not for everyone. I know a few people who quite violently dislike Torchwood since the second series, and it's all because they're under the impression that it's a proper action/sci-fi show.

*Stands at podium in front of Thar Shaddin community* Hello, my name is Jeremy...and I'm a nerd.

Not many authors I keep up with in the fan-fiction world, but I've read a lot. I'm mostly into the writing part. Writing about the people and places that others have created just get my creative juices flowing for my own original work.

As for what I've written fanfics based on......I'll just list 'em.
-Resident Evil (the game series, not those crap-fest movies)
-Final Fantasy (yeah, leave me alone Frug)
-Star Wars
-Firefly/Serenity
-Dragonlance/Forgotten Realms
-Bleach (I like manga and anime, so what)
-Full Metal Alchemist
and the piece de la resistance
-Harry Potter

That nerdy enough for you Jen?

Cool Drake, awesome.
Kutlin was orginally planned for the Forgotton Realms.
And if you could by any chance forward me the firefly fanfic that'd be awesome I'd love to read it. That is if you choose to.

Sure Devon, if I can find them again. It was back during the time of the t.v. series when I wrote them, so needless to say, they've been lost amongst all the hard drive upgrades and such, but I have them backed up on one of my thousands of floppies. If I can find them I'll be more than happy to send them along though.
