SHE HAS INSURANCE

Post by Jenica Sabiny » Thu Jan 10, 2008 3:43 pm

Thank every god in heaven and on earth!

So I'm pretty sure most everyone knows by now that my car was in a very minor accident last week. A girl backed into the passenger side door, which caused a small dent. Seriously, it's tiny. She gave me all of her information and then told me she didn't have insurance.

Now if no one here has even been in an accident with an uninsured motorist, suffice to say that it is painful to say the very least. Insurance companies are the worst thing in the universe - but that's a rant for another time.

Anyway, I called up my insurance and got a claim filed and everything. She'd gone off to work but I needed to file a police report to expediate processing, so I called the non-emeergency number to have a cop come out.

They refused because it was on private property.

Confused, I e-mailed my self-defense teacher who was a cop for many years to find out why this might be:

"You’re all smart and stuff about The Law. Yesterday when I called the cops to file a police report I was told that because the accident happened on private property (apartment parking lot) they don’t file reports for that at all. Why is that?"

He replied with:

"Because they’re lazy. Understand that police by nature are the laziest entities known to mankind. That’s why so many of them look like walruses. It’s basically a legal loop-hole. If it’s on private property, they can opt out more or less because of it being privately owned/controlled property. I don’t understand why this loop-hole exists because if someone gets capped in the parking lot of your apt complex, they’re coming out to answer it. Or if your apartment’s broken into, they’ll come out to look at it. But if someone backs into your vehicle, they’ve got the aforementioned loop-hole to fall back on to keep from having to do any kind of work so they can drive around, do nothing and earn a salary."

Fantastic. This on top of her not having insurance made last Thursday awesome.

Later on I had to call her to get her address, and she revealed that she did in fact have insurance. She gave me a policy number and I called my adjuster to let him know. He told me to call them ASAP to file a claim. I said yey ok!

I called them...and they couldn't find her in their system. At. All.

Greaaaaat. I did make the effort to have some faith, thinking that maybe, just maybe, she just had old information or had given me the wrong policy number.

Thrilled to death as I'm sure you can imagine, I called my adjuster today to check and see what was going on. He told me that if he could get the uninsured motorist information approved my deductible would be $200 instead of $500, which is at least something that won't kill my pitiful savings. I was happy to hear this but pissed off that I was going to have to pay because she hit me.

So I called her and left her a message begging her to call my adjuster ASAP. And within 30 minutes I got a call from him letting me know she'd spoken to him and he'd gotten confirmation that she DOES have insurance which will be paying EVERYTHING. My insurance doesn't go up and I don't have to fork out the cash! YEY!!!!!

So this has helped my mood considerably. I know I haven't been as goofy or cheerful lately and I apologize, but I think I'll start getting back into it within the next couple of days here.

One final note: the girl has been really REALLY sweet this entire time, doing everything I asked. She tried a vague attempt to get out of paying initially but has since proven herself to be a good person. I think it was just one of those bad days, and I really can't hold that against her. I'm thinking of sending her a thank you card for not running away or being difficult during this whole process. What do you think?

I sure hope so 'cause that's what I'm gonna get her. Maybe I'll tell her about how I hit a nice grandma and grandpa on their way to see their grandkids. It was a rainy day and the road was slick.

It was also Christmas.

:sorry:

Oh gosh, I hope that never happens to me. I'm glad she ended up being pretty nice about it--especially since it's her fault. Probably had to convince herself to own up. It's also good it was only a small dent.
