Alone in the Woods (OPEN)

Post by Ohlea » Tue Dec 25, 2007 5:55 am

As the wind blew, the trees rustled, the stray leaves danced and Ohlea shivered. Wrapping her cloak tightly around her small figure, she continued wandering through the forest. Ohlea had been searching for hours for merely a morsel of food, with no luck.

No berries sprouted on the berry bushes, no fruit on the trees and all the animals were tucked away in their nice warm holes where Ohlea could not reach them.

It was an unusually cold night. Ohlea’s lips were almost blue and her teeth were chattering away. Her thin cloak could fend off the wind but could not defeat the sharp chills that attacked her spine. Instead she suffered, hoping for her next meal to jump out at her. She was almost delusional from hunger, the cold and the increasing time Ohlea spent in isolation.

Rip!

Swiftly, Ohlea glanced behind her, searching for the direction of the noise. ‘It must be an animal, what other creature would be out in the forest during the middle of the night?’ She thought to herself as she quietly drew her dagger and tiptoed towards the tree where, behind, her dinner awaited.

Out of no-where came a burst of energy, she was finally going to eat! It had been over two days since she’d had more than water in her stomach, but not for long…

Jumping to the other side of the tree she yelled, “Gotcha!” as she stabbed the dagger downwards…

It was a cold night. Unbelievably, so. There were a few things that Devon hated more than the cold, but not much more. Ever since...that night, he had hated the cold. Fiery heat seemed to course through his body, and this cold was like water to his flames. He had thought briefly about making a fire, it wouldn't be that hard, there was obviously enough tinder around for fuel. The only problem was her.

He was starting to drift towards the dreamland, a land that up until recently had brought dreams of generally pleasant thoughts. Now though, there seemed only darkness and malice in his dreams. Maybe it wasn't so bad that he didn't drift off this time.

Still, when your laying up on some limbs all by yourself enjoying the quiet of the breeze blowing around you, the last thing you want to hear is...

“Gotcha!”

Devon was so surprised, he nearly fell out of the tree. "What the..." Devon muttered to himself. Seriously, who goes yelling through the woods, he wondered.
After gaining at least a small bit of composure, he peered towards the ground, and there about twenty feet away stood an elf.

She was looking down at the groun before her and smiling. Devon focused his eyes and tried to catch what she was looking at, and there it was. "A rabbit?" he whispered.
"She wakes me up with that yelling, nearly takes me out of this tree with that yelling, and all because of a rabbit?" He gave a slight low chuckle. He noticed she was holding a knife of some sort in her hand, but it didn't really appear to be bloody, not that he could tell. But then again, the rabbit was sure enough lying there before her, dead as a rock.
"Probably scared the darned thing ta death." He chuckled again, continuing to watch her quietly. Maybe he could follow her. Sleeping in trees or digging a sleeping hole was getting pretty annoying, but so was almost falling out of said trees.

Ohlea almost screamed with excitement. She had finally found something to eat; it meant Ohlea did not have to go to town afterall. Looking down at the fat rabbit, Ohlea knew she'd be safe for another weak before she became too hungry to function.

She sat underneath the tree and, with her dagger, began skinning the animal. It was getting colder so she wrapped the cloak even tighter around her. This brought a thought to her mind, 'How am I going to light a fire in this weather, the wood is probably damp.'

Ohlea sighed, her hope for a meal tonight disappeared as fast as it came. Glancing at the half-skinned rabbit, Ohlea felt sick. She wasn't hungry anymore, her disappointment had got the better of her.

Standing up, Ohlea tossed the rabbit into the tree with the little energy and anger she had.

"Useless rabbit!" She yelled, when really she thought herself useless; she was an elf who didn't know how to make a fire, how disgraceful.

Ohlea began to walk away, she didn't know where she was going but if she stayed in the one place, hunger would find her quicker unless she made her mind think of other things.

Wow, Devon wondered. Fiesty lil elf ain't she?
"Well, no use in letting a meal go to waste", and with that he hopped from his perch.
Devon ducked behind the tree, it was bad enough he was fixing to steal the elf's rabbit and cook it. Might as well wait until she's gone. He waited a few more moments, and then once completely satisfied that he couldn't see her any longer he retrieved his meal for the night.

He set the rabbit down next to the tree and went for some nearby tinder. A few twigs and a small limb broke into three peices in the shape of a triangle composed of the campfire. Devon again looked around. He had no matches or flint or even steel. What was the use really? All they would do would take up more space in his pockets.

*Snap*

Devon produced a small flame from the tip of his thumb and held it to the bark.
The warmth that he produced calmed him, the heat felt so very good on this cold night. He looked down....
"Hmm, ok maybe a lil more then?"

He closed his hand into a fist, and then sprang it open in a burst of heat. No flame this time, just intense heat. He closed his eyes, he loved the feeling using his powers gave them. It went way beyond mental capacity of having power, it merged with his physical body and produced a euphoric state for his body to enjoy.

A few seconds later, he calmed himself a bit more and pressed his hand to the bark, exherting a bit more heat. A small campfire was really nothing hard for him to do, and besides he loved watching the fire consume and grow.
After the fire had been burning for a few minutes, he went and grabbed the rabbit, skewered it with a stick and held it aloft.
"She was even kind enough to skin it for me, haha how nice."

Ohlea stopped in her tracks. Something did not seem right; she felt that someone, or something, was watching her, but what? Searching for the spot she’d just left, Ohlea struggled to see amongst the trees in the darkness. She’d heard something, a dull sound in the distance. The sound too loud for a small animal to make but what other creature would be wandering through the forest whilst it was pitch black?

Covering her cold pointy ears with her black hood, Ohlea cautiously crept in the direction she had come. Suddenly, a bright red flame could be seen in the distance, she knew now that she was definitely not alone.

Stealthily, Ohlea weaved between the trees until she was only three trees away from the one she had left not so long ago. A warm blaze hit her face and she gasped for the fresh air she’d come accustomed to.

‘Oh no! The stranger will have heard me!’ Ohlea thought as she slammed her hand over her mouth to keep herself quiet.

A few moments passed before the shadow by the fire continued to move. Ohlea watched as it walked over to the rabbit and picked it up. She soon became angered by the simple fact that, whatever it was, was able to cook the rabbit whilst she shivered in the cold. Ohlea was jealous and intrigued. What magnificent creature could light a fire with damp wood? What brilliant creature could hide so quietly as it had done whilst she skinned that delicious rabbit?

Ohlea had to know, she had to find out and hopefully learn from such a creature. She’d been alone too long and hoped for a piece of meat, a warm spot to stay the night and a possible friend that could help her execute her plans of destroying the human race.

((OOC: if the last bit makes no sense, if you haven't read my profile, she just wants revenge on humans because they killed her father))

Devon perked his head to his right side. He had heard something, and he had really only one idea as to who it might me. That elf was the only one who he had seen or heard. She had left a while ago, but then again he had lit the damned fire at night in the middle of the woods. Oh well, he had decided that he was more hungry than cautious. He thought about that mindset for a second, well, maybe that elf was feeling the same way.

Devon stood up and grabbed the stick sitting next to him. The rabbit was just starting to turn a darker color, a sign that it probably had another 10 maybe 15 minutes at the most left rotating before it was cooked enough for his liking. He started to walk around the fire poking at the hot wood to keep the air coming in, giving his fire some room to breathe. He walked around until he was on the other side of the fire and sat down. He peered over the flames in the direction of the noise.

Devon was in no sense a tracker nor hunter, he couldn't exactly place the sound. But it sounded like a gasp. Well what would you do if you had seen a fire just appear in the middle of night?

It struck him, he had used his magic to create the fire! Well that certainly put a damper on some things. Not too many people were very keen on people using magic, unless they were healers, then they were more than happy for them to use it. To be completely honest to himself, he had once been one of those people, fearful of magic.
Then again, he didn't know magic could feel this good.

He peered over the flames again and then looked to the rabbit. Leaning closer he made an overdramatic gesture as if he was smelling the meat.

"Mmm, well that does smell good. This really is a plump rabbit, might be enough food for tomorrow night too, if I watch my rations." He said a little too loudly, to really be talking to himself.

"Whatcha think stranger? You want some, seeing how you went through most of the work scaring it to death and skinning it for me? That really was nice of you." As he shouted this a little louder than his previous statement, he took his eyes from the rabbit to the shadows.

Devon stood up, the flames ruined his vision at night. He brought up his arms and crossed them about his chest, covering the direct light from the fire to his eyes. He didn't think that the elf would be dangerous, not when there was food about, but he did want to see the elf coming. His right arm snuck itself into his overcoat, hidden from view by his other arm. There it rested on the pommel of his dagger.
Well, he thought, Just in case.

Whilst the strange shadow moved around the flame, Ohlea crept closer until she was but a tree away from the fire. She glanced at the rabbit, how delicious it looked, how hungry it made her! She was almost desperate enough to march out there with her dagger in hand and demand her rabbit back! But how was it her rabbit? She found it, sure, but she lost it when she tossed it away.

Ohlea was suddenly distracted from her thoughts by the low sound of the stranger’s voice. It was a man, but what? A human, come to take her away? An elf ready to help her in battle? She’d heard of other creatures like dwarves but she wasn’t sure, she just didn’t want to be in any danger.

Startled by the stranger addressing her, Ohlea drew her dagger and kept it low by her side. She was ready for anything. He stood and she decided that she might alarm him with her dagger so she hid it underneath her cloak, still ready for any funny business. Vigilantly, she crept out until she was on the other side of the fire to the strange man.

He was visible now and any question Ohlea had disappeared. Anxiously, she stared into his light green eyes. Angry and confused, Ohlea studied the strange human in front of her. How was he able to use magic, it was a gift to the elves; how life had changed. She felt uneasy at this fact for it seemed he had more power than her and she knew of no-one who could help her here.

Ohlea wanted to pull her dagger out and stab him before he had a chance to do anything but she knew she was probably powerless against him and he’d surely kill her before she had a chance. Instead, she decided to act calm and learn more of this man; for man he was indeed, a disgusting human being who she wanted nothing to do with. She needed the rabbit though and, with disappointment, decided that satisfying her hunger was a good excuse for postponing her vengeance. After all, killing one man would not bring her father back.

“What’s your name?” Ohlea demanded as she hid her dagger back in its sheath, hopefully, without him noticing.

He smiled and then eyed her up and down. She really was beautiful in a sort of everyday kind of way. She didn't wear anything that striking, it was a sort of subtle beauty. Her skin was a bit on the pale side, but her hair was what caught his eye, so red!

He wasn't really just looking at her with his body, he was looking at her with his mind. Checking for anything out of the ordinary. Besides being alone in the middle of the woods at night ofcourse. He knew that most people didn't travel without some sort of protection, this was an elf, undoubtedly gifted in the magics. He wondered if there might be a bow or a sword or even a dagger close by, but since neither were out and pointed his way he decided he was atleast safe for the moment.

She had asked his name. Well the blunt answer would have been Devon. Then again, his surname had been whiped out back in his town. He felt somewhat despairingly about this, and after the quick recall of pain and suffering in his past he answered.

"The name is Akula, friend." He had no way of actually telling whether or not she was indeed a friend or not, but it was customary for Devon to treat everyone as if they were, and if they turned out to be an enemy...well that would be settled later.

"And your name, kind elf?" Again with the pleasantries, he didn't really like all of this fancy stuff, though, it did make for better first impressions.

He eyed her over again, checking for any signs of angst or malice. He had witnessed enough fights to realize that the first strike ususally came from a person that took advantage of another's time of speech.

Ohlea looked him up and down, trying to work him out. Why was he, a human, being so kind? How dare he call her friend! She was confused and hid the confusion best as she could, by being defensive.

"Look, Akula, I don't know what you're playing at but you better quit it or, or..." She didn't know what she'd do, she knew he was stronger.

But he didn't. Ofcourse! This, Akula, had no idea she only used healing magic.

"I'll, I'll..."

She didn't know what to say or how to say it. Sadly, she knew nothing about magic, except that it was illegal around here. Ohlea had it, she found her threat!

"I'll tell Marn about your magic use!" She yelled with excitement at the fact that she may hav beaten him.

Ohlea realized how stupid she probably looked. She gazed down at the rabbit and sighed. Her first real encounter with a human and she blew it. Like Akula would trust him now, he'd probably take his rabbit and run.

Devon became slightly agitated, for two reasons mostly. This woman was become insistently abrasive, and she accused him of magic use. Okay, yeah sure, he had used magic, but that wasn't the point. There was still a remainder of his old self left, the self who felt wierd and cautious using his powers. He wasn't born with them and they were still relatively new within his body, his mind did not completly trust them. Here she goes, just accusing people.

"Magic? Since when does someone need magic to create a fire?"

He bluffed, he didn't really have any proof he didn't use magic, but then again, Devon didn't assume she had any proof to the contrary. He tried his best to make his face reflect the lie as truth, then again Devon never really was that great of a liar. Alrighty then, time for a bit of improvisation.

"But, if your so sure on the thought of me using magic, to tell you the truth, it was a match. The last one to be more specific. So if you don't mind, let's sit and eat and be pleasant to each other, before this fire goes out and we waste that match."

Usually Devon wouldn't come off so abrasive, it wasn't really his nature. He liked to fly under most people's attention. But I guess if you steal someone's fresh kill, and then immediately roast it not more than five minutes after they've left, it makes it kind of hard. She had irritated him with accusations after he had made an offer, then threatened to get him in trouble for it. Seriously, can't two people just sit and eat?

Ohlea was amused by the simple fact that this man, this stranger was a horrible liar. It was comforting to know that the threat about magic had worked. Otherwise he'd have no reason to lie unless that was just a thing humans did.

A match? Would a match even work on wet wood? Ohlea wasn't sure and wasn't going to argue on the subject incase, by the small chance there was, she was to lose. She was not going to be defeated by a human, not that easily.

She'd already lost her dinner to him. This annoyed her. She was too hungry to fight for her rabbit though and, if she wanted to eat, had no choice but befriend this stranger. Or atleast pretend to befriend.

"I'm Ohlea." She smiled.

Hesitating, the hungry elf edged closer to the fire for warth and to show she would trust him, for now.

Suddenly remembering something she'd heard of from passerbys, Ohlea realized the possibiliies that had just opened up for her. that is, if she could trust thi, Aluka, he might be able to escort her there. She didn't dare venture into Marn alone unles necessary but having someone who knew their way, who had magic and strength, she would be safe. Plus, if she ever got a bite of that rabbit, she'd have enoug strength to keep up.

"Someone told me of some magical gathering somewhere in Marn, is that where you're headed?" She asked, hoping he was.

This elf was seriously pushing this magic thing a little too far. Devon had never met someone so bent on making him seem like a liar. Well, it is magic he thought. Not too many people liked it, and pretty much everyone had a fear about certain kinds of magic, one way or the other. Here she was, accusing him about using it, and then assuming he was going to a "magical gathering" in a city known for pretty much outlawing magic?

This elf was out of line. Though, he hadn't heard of this magical gathering. It must be some underground gathering. No one would be stupid enough to openly practice and teach outside in the open. Not from what he heard about the place. He wouldn't even have been going there if it wasn't for his town...well...being burned to the ground. The thought of this made his head sink low. He realized he was in company with someone who didn't trust him, probably didn't like him, and more importantly used magic. He snapped his head up, aware to the elf looking at him. She had sort of a smug smile from thinking she figured him out, and a childish look that came from being hungry and sitting next to a plate of food she didn't know if she was allowed to eat.

"Ok look elf. I stole your rabbit. We're all aware of that. You ran off, I snatched it up, I lit a match to light the fire and cook it. You accuse me of using magic, when you have no proof, and then accuse me of joining some magic gathering in Marn. Marn is a city that definately doesn't approve of open magic. So in a sense your accusing me of doing something illegal."

He started to feel his anger rise. Something that could prove very bad if he was trying to cover up the use of his magic. Things tended to "heat up" a bit when he got angry. The fire made him feel good, not mad, and he tended to use it as an escape.

"So this is what I'm saying to you. It was your rabbit. I cooked it. I already had a leg, and I'm not really that hungry anymore. It's fine and edible and your more than welcome to it. The present company has made me lose my appetite. As for this magical gathering in Marn? It's illegal. You should stay away. Who knows what kind of craziness those magic users are up to. Don't trust them. It's not safe."

He stood up and grabbed his jacket that he was sitting on off the ground. He put it on and flipped up the wool collar around his neck to keep him warm. He gave her a polite nod and started to walk away moving right beside her on her left side.

"Have a good night and pleasant meal." Again, pleasantries. He wasn't generally rude though and a welcome and goodbye was curteous and respectful, even if the whole conversation between wasn't. He felt as if that itself added a bit of spite to the flavor of the conversation.
After he got about twenty feet away walking in the opposite direction she was facing, he pulled out his smokes from his jacket. Just some dried of tobacco leaves wrapped in a light thin paper. He put it to his lips, and then put his index finger to the cigarette. The cigarette's end came alive with a little red flame.

"Don't trust magic users," he had said to the elf.
"Most of them are liars", he said aloud, then took a puff from his cig and exhaled the smoke. To Marn, he thought. He chuckled and walked on....

Ohlea was suprised how the man took the simple question. She wasn't accusing him or even thinking of the fact it was illegal. Oh, how she desperately wanted to go. She needed to learn more magic, even if it was illegal, it was becming harder and harder to survive.

Looking around, Ohlea grabed a large leave and wraped the rabbit up for later. She jumped up and ran after Akula so she was walking in time with him.

"I didn't mean to offend you. I know we got off on the wrong start and I know you use magic, that's not a problem. I use healing magic, I'd like to learn more. I was actually going to ask if you'd kindly escrot me to the gathering for I rarely go to Marn."

She made sure she had said everything she needed to say beforehand so that she had time to say everything before he rejected her. Ohlea hoped he would actually want to go to the gatherine because she was so sick and tired of being alone in the woods and she missed the life of being around those who use magic.

Insulting, and stubborn he thought. Regardless, he wasn't about to leave her stranded in the middle of the woods if she wanted to go. She said she didn't go often, which meant she had been there before, a fact that Devon couldn't himself say. He acknowledged her request with a nod, and continued to keep walking.

"Alright come along, but when we get to Marn we split ways. Again, for the record, I don't use magic. " He smiled. He may have lied, and she may know it, but that doesn't mean he had to acknowledge or say other wise.

"Off to Marn I guess. After you Ms."

And with that, they were off.

Ohlea knew he was lying. It was obvious he used magic. She was going to stop discussing it though so that she had something against him if she ever needed it.

Plus, she had to respect him, even if he was human. Why? He was escorting her to Marn and she had the rest of her rabbit. She knew she wouldn't be hungry for days and, with that in mind, there wasn't much that could bring her down.

She was ready to learn magic again, it had been years, but she was ready.
