Musicians
Re: Musicians
I played the trumpet back in the day...input laughs here...I wanted to play the drums or the sax, yeah as soon as I put the mouthpiece to my lips, the instructor wouldn't let me try out for the other two. So from then on I was second chair to a trumpet player who practiced all the time. I hated practicing, do you really wanna hear someone play the trumpet around your neighborhood? So since I graduated I havent played, the navy takes up too much time. I tried the acoustic guitar...loves country, and rock, and country-rock. But I cut my middle finger on my left hand, and lost all sensation on the tip, there for no chords for me...
And btw, I'm so jealous that you can play the banjo, "Teach me oh mighty one!"

Halifax? We're going to be neighbours! It's just in Halifax and only a couple of weeks.
Haven't seen much of Halifax, though I've slept in the airport a couple of times. They don't put you up in a hotel if the delays are due to weather, and there are weather delays a lot with Newfoundland as your destination. I remember several nights under the harsh airport lights singing "Farewell, Nova Scotia" hopefully under my breath.
Being in Les Mis is very awesome, wherever it is.
Stupid me, I had no idea they were changing it. That's... really disappointing. That show is so about the setting and time period. Plus with more effective treatments for AIDS available now, I don't see how the "No day but today" message could carry over very well. I mean yeah, it's still a fatal disease, but they could potentially live quite awhile... they aren't going to have to "measure a year" unless they're a lot sicker than most of the characters appear to be. Not New York? Not the eighties? I'll still go see it. Nervously, and not expecting much. I'll let you know how it is.I want to see Wicked sometime - and the new RENT, although I haven't really made my mind up about that one. I heard they're trying to make it all British and up-to-date, and I'm skeptical as to how RENT can work anywhere other than New York in the eighties. But it has to be seen, I guess. You'll have to tell me what it's like!

Ok, my view on modern musicals...
Wicked- Woo-Hoo!
Rent- @#*& that! It blew so hard
Phantom- Kickin' ass and takin' names, and Nightwish's version of the theme is amazing.
Across the Universe (or whatever the name is)- Any musical set to the music of the Beatles has to be great.
Sweeney Todd- Will absolutely see that shit.
Ok, sorry about that, the Captains here. I.E. I'm a bit N-E-Bree-Ate-ed.

Lol, what about Disney's High School Musical, and High School Musical II, has anyone actually seen those movies? If so, why haven't committed suicide yet?

I haven't seen them, but a guy I knew directed High School Musical a few months ago.Devon wrote:Lol, what about Disney's High School Musical, and High School Musical II, has anyone actually seen those movies? If so, why haven't committed suicide yet?
He used to talk to the people he was working with very nicely on the phone, then press the disconnect button and scream obscenities.

Re: Musicians
I haven't seen any musical lately...at all. But I rarely watch movies
I've only been to see one actual musical, and I'd love to go to another one sometime. They just appeal to the part of me that's just plain goofy and will God willing never grow up. MUSICALS OMG SINGING!!!

I was in a folk-acoustic band that played a cross mix of stuff and traditional irish tunes. Sang and played percussion. We toured the Southeast region of the U.S.

Busking is so much fun! I do it all the time, and it is completely addicting. I suppose it might make you feel homeless if you really needed the money, but I never put a hat out unless I'm playing with friends. I don't want to make people feel uncomfortable if they don't pay me and just want to listen. In fact, I prefer it when they stay without donating at all, rather than dropping a looney as they walk by.Pagusel wrote:I can play the flute and piccolo like a motherfucker, but I hate competition and I lack the spirit, so I don't do anything with it. I have a pretend band with real people and I am the vocals. Maybe I should get Rock Band.
I have a sister who is an incredibly gifted string bassist. Rather than do something like go to Conservatory, though, she busks. Anyone ever busked before? It's fun, but I can't say addicting. Feels kinda homeless.

I make electronic music. Not like trance or any of the other "washing machine" genres, rather more experimental or gritty stuff. Anyone is free to check out my tunes, most of which are available for free download at www.macjams.com/artist/shavingronaldscar
Busking is kind of hard to do when you make club tracks, but I've actually pulled it off before, with moderate success, and yeah, it's hella fun.

Alto sax for 6 years. I quit band and my sax was a piece of crap so I stopped for awhile. Right now, i'm looking for a tenor sax. I got to play it my last year in band and it clicked instantly. So i'm a musician without an instrument at the moment. I'm trying to teach myself guitar as well.

Re: Musicians
Electronic busking? That sounds interesting. I wonder, do you listen to Aphex Twin at all? I'm currently obsessed with Alarm Will Sound's acoustic Aphex Twin covers. Does your music have a myspace page?Anja wrote:I make electronic music. Not like trance or any of the other "washing machine" genres, rather more experimental or gritty stuff. Yeah, but the mp3 encoding quality on myspace blows. So I just refer people to the link I posted here. And I love aphex twin, of course! He's kind of the mac daddy of IDM, I saw a show that he played using only telephone apparatuses, it was intensely weird. He also scratched with drum cymbals. Love it.

I can't find it, what's the URL? Myspace might suck, but one of the advantages is that we can be friends!Anja wrote:Yeah, but the mp3 encoding quality on myspace blows. I probably played Girl/Boy song a thousand times on my cd player when I was in elementary school. I just love how his music varies from the unsettling to the captivating.

There we are. Not sure this will even work, they blocked me out of my account a while ago for some copyright bullshit. Perhaps that's why you can't find it? I dunno, I'm so sick of myspace, I haven't bothered to check.
Do you also dig slightly more brutal experimental music, like Rotator, Ladyscraper, DJ Skull Vomit, Bong Ra, Venetian Snares, etc?
