Regional Moozak!!!

I think we've got a pretty good distribution of people in these here parts, and I have no idea why this fascinates me, but I was wondering: what kind of music is considered native to your area? And do you like it?

Or do you have anything at all that's considered native?

It doesn't have to be older stuff - Mingaling, from Seattle, could claim grunge as "native" to that area.

So being from Tennessee, the most obvious regional stuff is Bluegrass. Oh yeah, you know the stuff - banjos, gospel lyrics, simple melodies and often a fast-paced fiddle. O Brother Where Art Thou is pure Bluegrass/Old-style Gospel.

I love Bluegrass and Gospel. I could listen to that stuff all day, I won't lie. I've got the accent, I've got the music tastes. Sorry kids - I'm an hick

As for heritage, I also listen to Latino music. Willie Colon is an excellent artist and I heart his music to death. There's also a bunch of artists none of you have ever heard of that I grew up on: Roberto Perrerra, Chavela Vargas (whom you MAY have heard of due to Frida), Juan Luis Guerra, Tito Gomez...

There's also a ton of *really* regional Puerto Rican styles: Bomba, Aguinaldos (short little Christmas songs, short enough to be ditties), danzas y plenas. Love every kind and could also listen to these all day.

um .... I have this thing where ... i totally do not listen to the AM/FM radio and rarely watch television unless its a movie or one of my top 5 fav shows so ... I have no idea what the regional music would be. Not to mention I'm not actually from where I am now as i live on a college campus and not very cozy with the "natives" here I do listen to music A LOT but i usually hear about stuff from others or stumble upon it somehow, like in movies, or just looking around. I do love using Pandora though! Great interactive online radio sort of thing but u control what your stations play and stuff.

Oh and to clarify, I'm going to college which kinda looks like its in the country surrounding Rochester, NY. So if anyone actually knows what the regional music is, i'm rather curious

As for home though I'd say that it fluctuates a lot. It could be anything at the moment for all I know. Although since Im from the country I'd have to say the "native" stuff would mostly be country music or oldies from like the 60's and 70's.

Jazz and Zydeco baby!! Every one of you bastards knows what Jazz is, but Zydeco......well, if you've ever seen The Skeleton Key, Zydeco is the type of music they're playing in the bar scene. Thing is, I can't stand most Jazz and none of Zydeco.

I do oh so love Southern Metal though, even if most of it's not from Louisiana. Good examples of this would have to be Down (featuring NOLA's own Phil Anselmo, formerly of Pantera) and Maylene and the Sons of Disaster.

For music of my heritage....that's a bit of a hard one. Native American Indian music isn't very easily found, don't like Scottish jigs or Celtic music, and Polka and German Folk aren't exactly my speed. The closest thing for this would have to be blues. Tons of my family members have been blues musicians, and the love of such soulful music has passed to me.
