Returning from http://www.tharshaddin.com/rp/viewtopic.php?t=1157

Drake walked along idly. They had just past the Temple, and he could see the back corner of the hospital ahead of him. He knew that Cody might be a bit uncomfortable in the crowded tavern, but it was the best place. The extra noise would cover their conversations pretty well, and he really did want a pint of ale to celebrate the discovery of their destination. He didn't have a problem with Cody not drinking or even with the fact that Cody didn't seem very enthused about what they had learned. He understood both. He often drank water or wine in place of ale, and it wasn't Cody's goal that they had come closer to, it was his.

He arrived at the front door of the green building and held it open for Cody to follow him in. He selected a table about halfway across the front wall of the tavern, one in front of an open and curtained window, and asked one of the bar maids to bring them their drinks.

Cody continued following Drake, still surprised he would rather go into the tavern than make an all out run for the power plant. If thats what he had been wanting, didn't it make more sense to celebrate after he had seen it? No matter what order they went in Cody was pretty sure none of it would concern him in any way other than being the friend of the person it did concern.

Cody sat down next to Drake at the table, glancing at the window and saving an amused smile once the waitress had left. "Last time you were hiding in the shadows, now your sitting next to an open window." Cody had a pretty habitual nature, so he still had to glance about the room, getting a look at the exit, the people and contents of the room, and then back to Drake. Just in case he needed to run, he liked to know where the best path might be.

He laughed at Cody's statement a bit as he took a sip of the strong ale that had just been placed on the table in front of him. "I actually did it to try and help you deal with the crowd some." His smile slowly fell off of his face. It was time to get to the question he had been near about bursting to ask.

"Cody, why do you shy away from women. Was the person your owner had train you a woman?"

Cody had expected the window was for him, but he had enjoyed hearing it anyway. It was also nice to hear Drake laugh, and see the relaxed muscles both were good signs they should be safe. Of course Drake would feel safe in here or they wouldn't have come, but these small details were important to always be aware of...just in case.

Cody looked at him with an expression of clueless surprise. He imagined he should have known Drake would have figured out he was scared of women eventually they way he was doing his best to dodge them. Still, the blunt way he had asked was somewhat shocking.
"My owner trained me." The words were softer, one finger drawing a swirling line on the table that only Cody's imagination could see. "He never gave the task to anyone else...well except for the school that all the kids went to. Reading...math...those basics."

Cody's finger twitched as if to go for a peppermint but he knew it was only a way to avoid the topic. Here Drake had been suggesting they not talk about his owner since he didn't agree with slavery...now this. This was where Cody thought things had become unfair. "She...his wife, she never liked me. She acted like it sometimes, in front of her friends, sometimes in front of my owner."

Cody's eyes flicked about the room again, looking at the people as if he hadn't noticed them before, then back towards the window. This time he didn't see Marn outside, but his old house and the tack area where he had stood silently several times as his owner's wife decided to show off her husbands fine horse.
"She was jealous I think. She didn't like it when he spent a lot of time with me. He still let her borrow me knowing that," he shrugged as if it wasn't that important, "she was his wife after all...and I was nothing more than an expensive toy in her mind. She always held the reigns too tight, and at one point she actually hooked me up to a cart." Cody actually snorted at this, still remembering how harsh the bit had been in his mouth. "It had all that fancy looking tack...made for looks, not for the animal. The bit was rough, and she had the harness force my head up too high making it hard to walk comfortably much less pull the cart." Cody didn't mention the level of panic he had felt when that had been attached, he'd been scared at this new concept, and without his owner there he had been lost and helpless. "It turned out she had wanted to take a ride with several friends, and they had suggested I would look good in the required tack."

Cody paused, he hadn't finished the tale of all that she had done to him. How after the ride, and when no one was around how she had beat him...it had been mild but to Cody it had still scared him. All the mark's and bruises had been under the shirt on human form, and hidden under his coat in horse form. She promised it would be worse if his owner had found out.

Cody exhaled slowly and tried to close off the memories. "Anyway...women are harder to understand. Men seem easier to read...women..I don't know. They can smile at you as if your friends one moment, then yell at you a moment later. They hit harder, care less...and...I just try to avoid them." He hoped that was a good enough answer, because this was a far worse subject than talking about his owner. "She's the reason I didn't go home that night...I didn't want to be alone with her after that...." Obviously Drake should know what 'that night' was.

Drake sat and listened to Cody's tale. He felt sorry for bringing up a subject that so clearly caused Cody pain. The young shifter was staring out of the window, but his eyes appeared not to see any of the details of the world outside, instead they were somewhere within his past. His brow furrowed a bit at the mention of the Cart.

Drake could tell, whether it was said or not, that the woman had beat Cody. The pain and fear were too clearly etched on his face for anyone to miss. It didn't help that Cody had been rubbing his chest, probably not even noticing that he was doing it, during the pause in his speech. The comment about women hitting harder confirmed it in his mind.

"What the hell kind of person beats a defenseless animal?" Drake physically jumped with shock. Had the other half of his soul, the other half of his shattered soul, just shown compassion for Cody. It was very odd. Drake slowly started to realize how much meeting Cody had changed him. First, he had been casually leaving his hood down, as it was now. He had walked openly through the streets to get to Miguel's shop, but he would have normally ran across the roof tops to get there. Now, and strangest of all, his normally wicked "friend" was taking up for someone. Drake shook his head in order to clear it of the confusing thoughts.

"Yes, I can understand that. It would not have been in your best interests to go back there." Drake went back to scanning the room. While he was not willing to relinquish Cody's company for it, he did not like the slip in his normally flawless level of caution. His eyes raked across the many men and women that milled about in the small room. He was fairly certain that none of the people were a threat until he got to the stools at the bar. There sat two fairly burly men looking in his direction over their shoulders. Drake was absolutely sure that they were watching him and Cody, as the two men's eyes followed their every movement within their seats.

He leaned across the table towards Cody. "Cody, I think that it would be best if we left now." He had not succeeded in keeping an air of urgency and fear out of his voice.

Cody watched Drake seem to jerk at some of his words, and then the shaking of his head. Cody felt oddly quiet now. As if trying to be rid of those memories meant shaking out every other memory and emotion. It was like having just cleaned that chalk board at school, and waiting for something new to appear on it.

Cody's eyes followed Drake, without the added haste. He was much more the person in the background that watched events play out than to make any action on his own. Cody had felt like this a few times in his life and had never liked it very much. It was as if something was suddenly missing that was a part of you, but you could never quite figure out what it was.

As Drake started his sentence Cody saw them also. Drake's tone only heightened the nerves that had already begun to go tense. Amazing how quick Cody's mind went from emptiness to rolling with barely suppressed fear. He nodded to Drake's words continuing to stare at the two men. A few seconds of hesitation before that defiant glint came to his eye and he managed to make himself stand up. His muscles were strung up wanting to run, and this was the reason for his distaste in crowded areas. Running through here might just as likely trip him up as get him out faster. He headed towards the door, turning his head slightly to see Drake following. Good...he didn't want to leave Drake, and he had been the one to suggest leaving. Outside...once they got outside they would be safe...

NPC POST

Gordon sat at the bar watching the strange man and the other one over his shoulder. They had, unfortunately, noticed his staring. It was alright though, he would have his fun anyway. They would have to be able to disappear into thin air to avoid him.

That was one of his favorite advantages to sitting at the end of the bar near the front door. None of his targets could avoid his wrath. Why, just the other day he had managed to rough three people from Shim out of their money due to his seating position.

He perked up with a smile as he realized that the two were moving to leave The Drunken Rat. The first one was watching him defiantly while the odd one followed and tried to keep his eyes elsewhere. Gordon slapped his friend, Marshal, on the knee and stood up from his seat. He then proceeded to walk, trying to look as if he was moving towards the door casually.

"Where do you think you're going boy?" He said with a gap toothed smile at the younger man in the lead. His massive frame was now blocking the duo's exit.

Cody shifted back a step as the man came to meet him at the exit. His left leg, farthest from the door stomped on the ground in stress to this dilemma. He looked at each man in turn, and then to his current goal, the exit. He wanted to look over his shoulder and see Drake, he wanted to make sure no one was coming up behind them, but he was scared to take his eyes away from these two.

He opened his mouth planning to tell them to let him pass, sadly whatever bit of bravery had him standing up to the two was not going to give him the nerve to speak. He'd actually turn about and sit down if he didn't think he'd get hurt for backing up.

Cody then heard a soft sound which he finally realized was his own whimper of despair. Bravery gone..frozen boy in its place. Don't hurt me...don't hurt me...
He swore he could feel every nerve in his body, all of them flowing into his spine which had gone stiff refusing to let him go forward or backward. Concentrate...don't panic...your ok..its ok...

"Let me out!" The words were quiet from fear, but spoken fast before that same fear could freeze them in his throat. His arms were evenly aligned with his shoulder muscles, fingers twitching with his indecision. The choices were obvious...run, panic and run, stay absolutely still and wait for something or someone to make the choice for you. Cody waited.

Gordon's smile melted off of his face. Had this little twerp just demanded he move. His smile came back, more wolfish this time. "Not a chance little man," he stepped forward and shoved the young man hard. The odd man behind caught him and moved himself to the front.

Gordon didn't like this one too much. His green eyes sparkled in a weird way that bothered the big man. "You going to try and make me move now?" He laughed and turned to smile at Marshal who stood at his side.

"YES!" Drake heard the triumphant scream in his mind as he turned his "friend" loose.

The man fell to the ground hard as a bony fist slammed into the side of his turned head. The other man that had remained silent until now looked at his friend lying unconscious on the floor and then back to Drake. Drake smiled at him as maliciously as he could. The effect was evident on the man's face, but obviously not wanting to look a coward, he stood his ground.

In the blink of an eye a foot shot out and caught the man in the groin. He doubled over in pain. Drake's hands wrapped around the ruffian's greasy black hair and shoved down as his right knee moved in the opposite direction. The man's face and Drake's knee collided with a nauseating squish.

Grabbing Cody's arm without looking back at him, Drake ran for the door.

Cody took the shove bad having been so tense, and was willingly and gratefully manhandled back behind Drake. It couldn't have taken hardly anytime for Drake to drop the two men yet it seemed ages to Cody. His muscles quivered wanting release but scared to make the first move.

Cody went blindly along with Drake out the front door, trusting him where he was unwilling to trust himself. The second the walls surrounding him were gone all hesitation left. Cody's legs lengthened his stride, staring straight ahead he poured out all the tension he'd been building up in those muscles. Run away! The safest way to not get hurt was to run away from the threat.

Cody was certainly trying to avoid hitting anyone or anything, but the idea of slowing wasn't coming to mind so he avoided only what he could by swerving to the left or right. He knew he needed to get away! Cody's mind wasn't calculating the existence of time as he ran, so it was not time period nor a certain place that made him slow down. When Cody slowed it was because there won't to many people near him and his mind was starting to focus again on things besides fear. His head turned to look for Drake, and the second he remembered Drake he froze at the concept of having lost him. Shivering he turned around to see what had become of his friend.

Drake followed Cody's mad dash away from the tavern as best he could. He was having to leap over booths that people had knocked over trying to get out of Cody's path. He was having to weave between people. He was doing his best and still managing to loose his friend at a rapid pace. Giving up on following on the ground Drake quickly scanned his surroundings for a way to the roof tops.

He ran at an angle towards the side of a building. He jumped up at it and ran across the face of the wall, gaining more and more height with each quick, precise step. When he came to the end of the wall he leaped out into the open air over a narrow street. He barely managed to grab hold of the roof of the building he had been aiming for. After hoisting himself up, he continued to run after his frightened friend.

Now he was making better progress. At one point he was actually managing to gain on Cody, but as the young man turned onto a less crowded street he regained his advantage.

Drake finally saw Cody stop a good while later, but he was still a good distance away. As Drake came closer he launched himself from the roof and hit the ground rolling to absorb the impact. He finished rolling and found himself sprawled out on the ground at Cody's feet.

"Don't....ever...leave...me...like that." He had barely managed to speak between gulps of air. His friend still looked scarred. Drake sat up and then slowly raised himself off the ground. Upon trying to dust himself off, a stinging pain let him know that his hands had been scrapped up pretty badly from scrabbling up onto roofs and over stone walls. He looked down at them to find a short tear in his black glove. His exposed hand had several small nicks and one rather nasty cut that was streaming blood down his arm. "I need to find somewhere to clean this off," he said looking back up into his friends face.

Cody's heart got to skip another beat as someone leapt off a rooftop towards him. He backed up two steps to realize a moment later he had nearly fled from his friend. "Drake." The first syllable had sounded happy to see him, the rest sounded more concerned and hesitant. It hadn't been right to run away and leave him behind. What if they had caught up to Drake? Cody would have been safe...and he would have lost a friend. Cody would like to say he'd quit being a coward, but he didn't believe it.

At the sight of blood on Drake's hands Cody flinched realizing he had gotten him hurt. It hadn't been the men, but Drake had been injured working to stay with him. "I'm sorry..." Cody hesitated looking from the injured hands to the surrounding areas, unsure suddenly of what to do next. "Right...sorry."

"Where too?" He wanted to repeat he was sorry but imagined Drake had already heard him.

Drake looked around their location. Across a clearing he could see the Justice Hall. They had gone a fair distance from The Drunken Rat. "Don't worry about it, I got careless and wasn't watching where I put them when I was up there," he said as he started to walk north. He was looking for some source of water, but saw nothing. coming to the L-shaped building that was east of the Central Inn along Main Street he found a broken barrel with a little rain water collected in the bottom.

With a grimace at his unsavory, but unrivaled choice, he dipped his cut hand into the dirty water and shook it to clean the blood off. With his gloved hand he unzipped one of the hidden pockets of his pants and pulled out a strip of faded blue cloth which he used to bandage his hand.

"Well, we might as well make our way to the Industrial District now." He looked off to the north. A smile of anticipation crossed his face. He was finally going to find the thing he had been looking for.
