I think Thar is special because of the community, not the elitism, which is an unfortunate necessity to keep people who can't write, are lazy or unreliable from messing with our game. It's special because of the way it began and the people who've stayed.

I could think that, and disagree with the notion that you can find RP anywhere. Or, at least, good RP anywhere. If I want bad RP i'll go to ayenee. *shudders*

I admit that in the past I've gotten frustrated with the whole character application needing to be so in-depth detailed but in the long run I found that some of it was very important and even necessary later on. I've actually had to edit my original character applications because, though i was detailed, I had to be even more detailed! Not saying that it's bad in any way. In fact, like i said, it comes in handy later. Makes sure you and everyone else can fully understand your character AND helps prevent confusion later on.

I can't say I've ever felt that this site was elitist in any way. I've actually felt it to be rather relaxed. People are more or less considerate of those who have to leave for short periods of time and those who have to leave for longer get good send offs. Not to mention, I especially like the amount of talent that has been attracted to this board. I cannot honestly recall any threads that I have been in that haven't been worthwhile.

As for the setting of Thar, creating and using characters that would fit in here, well that's a given. If someone cannot figure that out, then they shouldn't be posting here anyway. And, I always understood the whole "no video game or anime characters" to be implied but some people might not think about it or might read too much into the rules. Though i feel that it should be appended because some people just don't get the whole "implied" thing, I also feel that anyone who is that desperate to find a loophole in the rules may become a problem later on, whether it be the way they post or their interactions with people on the board. That being said, if someone does make that mistake, you should at least let them know what they did, and try not to be harsh about it. Everyone makes mistakes.

Oh! I see you edited the rules and I think that should definitely get the point across

Well I gotta have some fun with the website.

I know nobody here will look for loopholes. If anyone does, I will be swift and merciless. Rules are not about the words but about the intent. I firmly believe no amount of writing can replace sound human judgment.

You'll need to explain your disagreement with being able to find role play for your character anywhere.
There are certain parts where your character might not fit in. Because of how localised the setting is, people create certain scenarios and then it can be hard to find a logical way to fit your character in, i.e. a way that makes sense.
I've found this to be true also. Not quality role playing, necessarily, but it's definitely easy to find a board that accepts anyone and have at it.
[/quote

I'm sorry, I don't understand. I thought Lucian was talking about Thar in particular, whereas it looks to me like you're talking about other boards also. I probably misunderstand what Lucian said.
Also, with the quality of the writing from our own authors, I doubt any of us would have trouble moving to a different board and being accepted.
Not that I don't agree, but it seems like some people here have been telling each other this long enough to believe more than that. Like there is an overwhelming arrogance that's not just being humorous, but genuine. And whilst there is nothing wrong with this in principle, I have noticed that some of those people, whilst being good writers technically, actually have problems writing with others or weaving a good story with others on a basic level.
How can you disagree with both comments and not be contradicting yourself?

If you can't find RP for your character anywhere, that makes Thar elite because it's rare and special, because you can't find RP for your character anywhere. If you disagree with Thar's elitism then that must mean you can find RP for your character elsewhere, and therefore you are contradicting your first disagreement.
So then Lucian was contradicting his/herself (sorry, I have no idea)?

You see, I thought Lucian was talking about finding RP for your character anywhere within Thar itself.

Therefore, I thought finding Thar special for its elitism was wrong.

And that is where your point falls down.
QED.
I'm sorry, I don't understand what this means.
Unfortunately, my pet peeve is people disagreeing without explanation. Could you please explain? :(
I'm sorry, Blood, I got very busy all of a sudden and have just now had the chance to sit down at the computer and (attempt) to think about what I was writing. Didn't mean to make you sad.
I think Thar is special because of the community, not the elitism, which is an unfortunate necessity to keep people who can't write, are lazy or unreliable from messing with our game.
I agree - a community message board (even if it is a platform for writing) should be special because of the community and not the elitism. I also agree that some elitism is unfortunately necessary, however, I think that some people have taken it too far at this community so that the atmosphere is a little too elite in its nature. I think people who can't write can learn to write and, seeing as there are so many award-winning authors here, that they could learn relatively easily to improve. I do have standards - otherwise pb wouldn't have me as co-owner of her "baby" board :p - but I think its easy to be too strict and turn good story-tellers and good potential writers away in favour of tecnical writing, which can be quite bland.
It's special because of the way it began and the people who've stayed.
I'm sure that's a special story in its own right. :)

Okay. There appears to be a bit of a mix up in there somewhere. I like this place. A lot. So I have formed strong opinions on it. Its how I work.

If you feel that's the case, you have two courses of action which you can take.

a) tell me, and I will put an end to it.

b) put an end to it yourself by ending the discussion.

If you think some issues are being brought IC from OOC talk, then I encourage you to tell me because that is entirely unacceptable and it needs to be stamped out sooner rather than later. I do not take this lightly. When I write with someone I'm not interested in OOC gripes, and I expect that from everyone involved.

If it is all OOC arguing, take option b) and stop the discussion. It takes two to argue. If it then goes IC, tell me and I will stamp it out.

What you should probably not do is bring it forth publicly, where it's likely to fan flames or be taken the wrong way. This is public, and that's fine.

If people don't tell me about it, it remains their problem and I can't do anything. Rules or no rules.
It has already been said (in this topic I think) that certain people have already made the decision not to write with certain other accepted members because the quality of the writing is not good enough; and one cannot help but wonder - "Do they mean me?"
I am unaware of anyone here not wanting to write with anyone else for reasons of quality. I've never actually heard anyone hint at it either. Any issues that have arisen have been purely personal choice, but not because the writing was 'not good enough'.

That said, people have every right to make the choice. I know I'm not the best writer here and I also know that what some people consider great writing, others can't get through.
Sometimes I think I feel doors (RP's) are closed to me because I cannot make ten replies a day.
Neither can I. I stick with people who post at the same pace. C'est la vie.
Hehe, I think you opened a can of worms here, Frug.
This can of worms has always existed in one form or another, and always will exist where people are interacting with each other. I'm aware of a lot of what goes on, but I will not do anything if nobody comes to me and it stays overtly civil.
I have had concerning this board and particularly the OOC topic that made me feel awful.
Nobody wants to feel awful but I think you'd be surprised how much can be the result of a misunderstanding or misinterpretation of intentions.

If it doesn't involve you, I don't think you should get involved. If it does, and you find something offensive, you should report it or say so to the person in question. If you think someone else is being harassed, you may want to ask that person if they actually are and tell them to go to me.

I treat Kamar like dirt because he is dirt, and that's nobody's business but mine and the dirt.

The general rule on these forums is a 3 day wait for a post. After 3 days you can skip the person. If they repeatedly do so, they can be NPC'd out of the thread. If people choose to post faster I am not going to force them to slow down. They should probably warn anyone wanting to join that they post at x posts per day.

Julen and Railtus post way faster than I will ever be able to on a regular basis. I don't have a problem with that and I think we could reach a consensus if we end up RPing together, which may happen soon.

It won't escalate now because I'm going to ask this to be dropped right now. Anything else can be handled privately.
