Forgotten Faces

Cody
Cody eventually started making some muffled sounds as some part of him was deciding if it was time to fully wake up. There was a throbbing somewhere in his body, if he woke up the pain would get worse. His mind floated into a hazy world filled with pain, memories of simply running with no regrets, fear, or indecisions in his life. He remembered laughing and hugging his owners leg as a young child.
A small smile came across his face at thos memories, he opened his eyes wanting to have more of those memories then realized he'd chosen the wrong decision in trying to stay happy. Cody yelped at the pain he felt in the moment of waking. He struggled to get up disoriented and scared. It took a few stumbling steps but he managed to stand up, shivering at the sight.
"Drake..." He wanted to ask to go, wanted to ask for answers, and mostly wanted to ask for the pain to stop. He had to many requests and no way to solve anything. He stumbled then sat back down on the ground. "I'm tired..." He had never been in this bad of shape, he imagined as a horse he'd look more like a thing to be tossed on the meat auction block.

Drake looked over as Cody yelped then watched as he made an attempt to move. "Yeah, it's probably best you stay sitting for a little while. Now that you're awake I'm going to go look and see if I can find us a way out of here."
Drake stood and walked through the dark room to where the entrance to the mage's laboratory had been. The doorway was half filled with rocks and dirt, but there was more than enough room for him to climb through.
Once inside Drake was shocked to see that he could see the starry night sky above him. The explosion had collapsed the room and given them a way out. Now he just had to find a way out. He picked around the mountains of debris until he found a suitably angled pile and started climbing up. He reached the top a few minutes later and breathed in a lung-full of the crisp air. Now all he had to do was figure out how to get Cody out. He climbed back down into the cave.
He twiddled his other dagger, which he had found amongst a small pile of rocks in the other room, as he walked back across the room. "Cody, are you still conscious? If you think you can climb we can get out of here."

Cody
Cody didn't much like the idea of being alone right now, and thought of following him but flinched at the pain that went through him as he started to move, and resigned himself to staying put.
Perhaps it was the passiveness of a horse to accept pain that had him not crying or making dramatics, he certainly hadn't ever had to learn pain tolerance. Miserably he waited for Drake's return, thinking over what the mage had been saying. So...no one to be angry at now, what was he going to think of it all?
Cody sighed realizing how silly the question was. He'd have to accept it, no matter what he thought the past wasn't going to change. So the mage they had killed had been a connection to his past...Drake had killed. Drake was part of his past in a sense...or an ending to some other creatures lives. So Drake wasn't missing anything....he just couldn't get along with himself.
When Drake came back he stood back up, a bit more stable this time. "I..don't know. My arm hurts a lot." That was a mild way of explaining it. It hurt to be still, moving it didn't seem all that appealing. His back hurt also...but that wasn't as serious he didn't think. "I'll manage I guess."
When he'd had an owner he always he'd always known where home was. He had been safe and felt confident in his life. Injuries were always mild and treated right away. Cody missed his old life right now...he'd love to wake up and find his owner by his side. Cody started walking in the direction Drake had come from, complying but rather subdued.

Drake walked back to the door and climbed through. Cody came right after him, albeit with some trouble. Drake guided his friend around to where he had managed to climb out. "Alright, you go first so I can catch you if you start to fall." Cody shook his head and warily mounted the mound of stone debris. Drake watched him start climbing, his injured arm cradled in front of him. Drake soon fallowed.
Cody slipped more than Drake had expected he would, but he managed to catch his friend every time. Once they were at the top Drake wound up having to move around Cody and go out first so he could help his friend make the last step of the climb.
Once Cody was laying safely on the grass Drake surveyed the sky. He wiped the sweat from his forehead. They were back in the area that had held the strange ring of stones. Now, however, it seemed relaxed. The trees seemed to sigh with relief and the night birds sang their hunting tunes from the high boughs. "Come on Cody, let's get out of the opening so we can rest."

Cody
Cody gave his friend a rather pathetic look as he preferred the idea of lying where they were, "k..." He sighed and got back up, "Drake...I don't understand. Whats different with your...two? parts of your mind...if you got em both your fine right? It's still you..." This was actually the easiest of the new things learned for Cody to ponder on, it had absolutely nothing to do with him.
He wouldn't be able to be a horse again for a long time if they didn't purchase a healer, he wondered how much that cost. Maybe they could find Uluki...she wouldn't charge him, she'd been real nice to him. Cody couldn't imagine ever having so much to think on at once...it was rather confusing trying to find one thing and only one thing to focus on. So far he was still gamely trying to keep it at Drake's mind.

Drake thought about how best to answer Cody's question as he walked into the woods, a thinner part this time. "It's a little hard to explain. It's like being two people in the same body. If one half thinks I should do one thing, the other half normally thinks I should do the exact opposite." Drake shrugged and sat down on the ground. He layed back against a tree stump and eased his eyes shut.

Cody
"I guess I just don't get it..." He sounded apologetic. "I mean I sometimes can't decide on what to do...I might want to sleep, but at the same time I might want to eat, or roll in the dirt instead of just hanging out in the shade. I want to do both and have to choose which way I will go." He knew he must be way off, but it wasn't something he was easily getting. "I don't know maybe I do. Ever want two different life styles? Is that closer to it? I want my owner and that life back I had..." That stopped him for a few moments of silence, the mental pain fighting the physical, "but at the same time...some part of me doesn't want that, its kind of confusing...is that sort of it?"
Cody was glad when it was time to rest, very glad. He lay down slowly, careful of how he maneuvered his body. He pulled his knee's up, kept his one arm curled to his chest and his head tucked in, closing his eyes waiting for the pain and stress to leave his body.

"Not really. Like back in the cave. One half, the half that was in control obviously, wanted to rip Hamgrint apart. However, the other half wanted to hear him out and then ask nicely for him to let us out. Like I said, I don't really know how to explain it."
Drake rolled over on his side. "Night Cody." Drake slipped off into a world of numbing blackness. All of the physical pain of the real world no longer mattered. All of the horrible events of the day no longer mattered. All that mattered now was rest and healing.

Cody
Cody knew there was no way he'd fall asleep as easily as Drake had just done. So, his few experiences were nothing like what Drake had going on in his mind, maybe that was why he couldn't find a comparison. Did it matter how he was created? Cody didn't know what to make of it...or how to decide what to make of it...really he wished he'd never heard the man. Cody hadn't needed to know about his past or beginnings, how come while Drake had to search for his Cody got it tossed on him like it or not?
Far better to simply exist and worry of the day then to exist caring of the past. It made sense to Cody, for the moment at least. He closed his eyes again imagining he'd never fall asleep as fast as Drake. It wasn't but a moment later he felt his mind let go of its dilemmas and allowed him to also put away all the things that bothered him. Exhaustion gave him a good deep sleep, one free from the cruelties of nightmares and the bittersweet leftovers of good dreams.
