Slice of Life
Re: Slice of Life
Slowly Drayel counted to twenty in his head, careful not to move too excited as he carefully tied Misneach to a nearby post. He wasn't sure exactly what he was going to do once he actually found the boy but it wasn't like he couldn't just leave Talia on his doorstep.
Walking back to the bakery, Drayel focused hard on keeping his breath even and his stride slow. If this thing was some sort of demon, would that mean it could see outside of the boy? Could he even separate them? The sword was his best guess but if it didn't work then what?
Drayel continued his brooding until he reached the door, raising his hand absentmindfully to knock. One way or another, this was what was going to happen.

Re: Slice of Life
His voice came to her, barely above a whisper in her thoughts. Her potted plants? She always just thought that she was just a good gardener. She had always helped her adopted parents with their small vegetable patch and it thrived even then under her care.
Talia gasped and leaned hard against the wall, a hand reaching up to cover her mouth as if to keep the emotions insider her from spilling out. She had been sent away, and she never fully knew why, she had never understood why they had rejected her when they had seemed to love her so much. But then again they were strong puradynes, some had been surprised that they had taken in a daughter of someone who had been killed for using magic. Perhaps they thought that it would not manifest in her, that she would take after her mother. But then they must have seen something in her when she gardened and instead of turning her in or registering her they let her fend for herself.
She didn't know if she should be grateful or angry at what they had done. Or perhaps the basilard could do more then communicate, perhaps it could also reach into her memories and use them to make his words seem like the truth.
Talia knew she was grasping at straws now but she had to hold out some hope. She wiped the tears that were forming in the corners of her eyes as she tried to compose herself.
I don't know why he has returned, perhaps he forgot something. Or perhaps he's come back to....I will see what he wants, She said as she stood up and flew down the stairs. She threw open the door just as he had raised his hand to knock and practically fell into his arms.
A moment later she realized what she was doing and awkwardly stepped back. Sure they were 'dating' but it was still Drayel, she didn't want to shock him too much. And now was not the time for her to fall to pieces and break down about what the basilard had just revealed to her. And he was a guard, it was one thing that he was somewhat friends with a wolf shifter but a mage just seemed so much worse.

Re: Slice of Life
Talia moved up to her supposed paramour. The basilard was growing increasingly convinced that she had not deceived it after all. How unfortunate. The boy shifted, further ruining the delicate array of cobwebs. He now faced the street, out across the alley. The basilard may have turned its back on the building, but it was far from unaware of the occurrences within.
Uncertainty plagued it; such was one of the few emotions that could frequently trouble the basilard. It needed to find its kin, and within that building was a girl with a power which could prove decisive. Going back would not only require acknowledging its own weakness before her, a risky proposition, but also run the risk of betrayal.
It decided that it did not need to act. It simply spoke, feeding its words to Talia.
May I speak with him?

Re: Slice of Life
Talia bit her lip uncertainly. She was surprised that thing had asked her permission to talk to Drayel. She didn`t know if she wanted to give him consent but then it was very likely that even without it, the basilard would talk to him anyways. And wasn't this why she had asked Drayel to come?
I doubt that you would listen if I said no. She said, a tad spiteful. But nevertheless I do not see the problem with you talking to him....so long as you don't tell him about my, my, abilities. If it comes to it, I'd rather tell him myself.

Re: Slice of Life
The situation I presented to you remains unchanged. So long as you do not place me in the hands of Marn, I will not tell any mortal your status. It thought about that statement. Or immortals, if the Lord of Kaledin should happen to ask me in person. It was nothing she couldn’t have inferred, though it doubted she would be pleased at the reminder. Marn had a curious sense of denial over their mysterious benefactor.
Normally it might have wanted to avoid the attention that could be gathered from pointing out the blatant hypocrisies of such influential yet unknown figure, it had mentioned the Lord of Kaledin to force her to note the presence of magic in government, and through it, her daily life. If she could acknowledge that fact, she might come to be more accepting of its presence.
It turned its attention to the newcomer. Was it truly wise to speak with him? The basilard couldn’t be certain. Instead it continued to speak to Talia, patiently explaining its reasons. I asked because I would rather know his probable reaction before I use magic to speak over this great distance. If it should upset him sufficiently, I believe your emotional response would be similar. I see no need to aggravate my benefactor, nor any particular need to speak with him. If you would rather I did not, I will not.
The basilard waited.

Re: Slice of Life
Drayel wasn't really sure what was wrong but judging by Talia's face, the thing was about and talking with her. He wanted to growl, to shout and threaten the invisible enemy but that wasn't what he was suppose to do. Instead he just hesitantly stood there, trying to keep a rather blank face as he watched her expressions for panic.
"I didn't want to leave you quite yet." He stated after a moment as he gave her a hesitant smile. "Sorry for coming back so soon."

Re: Slice of Life
Good, she hadn't shocked him too much, and if she had he was doing an awfully good job at hiding it. He was doing an awfully good job at his part in general, Talia had to try to not blush as Drayel spoke to her, his tender tone catching her off guard for a moment.
"It's getting late, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt if you come in for a bit. But you can't tell anyone I let you in after hours." Talia said almost shyly as she beckoned him inside before locking the door behind her and ushering him towards the stairs. She was glad it was fairly dark in the kitchen so she didn't have to be as embarrassed about how nervous and shy she actually was. Of course Drayel had been to her room before, ages ago when he was investigating a break in but he wasn't on duty now, or at least he was pretending he wasn't so ushering him up to her room was such an....intimate thing!
Shaking her head at herself she focused on the voice that had spoke to her again as she tried to decipher what it wanted and what it was thinking.
Drayel is strong and trustworthy. She finally said, wondering if her voice would come through to it as faint as its was coming through to her. I do not see why it would upset him overly so. And as I told you....we are involved. If you tend to carry on with me and do who knows what, then he will have to know what is going on at least in some way.
She blushed at the lie, thankful that it was nowhere it could see her. Of course her pink cheeks quickly faded away and paled as she realized that what she had just said more then likely implied that she would have to tell Drayel what she had found out about herself. Sighing she sunk onto the floor in front of her bed and leaned against it, partially regretting that she had chosen not to furnish the room with at table and chairs, or at least some chairs.

Re: Slice of Life
The basilard took the information and considered it for a short moment. As it did so, the boy continued to stare directly forwards. His eyes were glazed and unfocused. The blade ruined the child’s night vision, and the world remained dark but for a small bubble around it. Were it not for that glow held in his hand, hidden but not unseen by the boy’s sitting frame and the cellar door, a passerby might have thought he was under the influence of some drug.
Her words were enough. The basilard did wish to speak with the new arrival. It was possible for one to maintain deception in light of direct confrontation, but for two to do so struck the basilard as implausible without adequate planning. From what little it knew of the baker, it did not credit her with a tactician’s mind.
The basilard’s thoughts rolled outwards and touched to the newcomer’s. The link, and by extension its voice, remained nothing more than a weak whisper. Inklings of its words rolled from Drayel’s subconscious as it spoke, I greet you, mortal. I do not suppose you will dispense with her misdirections and inform me of your true purpose here?
If he passed this test, the basilard would assume she was telling the truth. It still held no intent of reapproaching the building.
Even with eyes that stared indiscriminately, it was difficult for the basilard to miss the sudden flicker of yellow at the edge of its vision. It craned its neck to peer through the darkness. There was a mind at that location, but something was wrong with it. It had been tampered with.
It then heard a shuffling noise, and everything clicked together. The basilard stood and held itself. There was hardly any point to sneaking about now.
A female jester with a broken arm limped from the alleyways, her colorful garments little more than tatters. Her expression was as blank as the child’s, albeit in a more flaccid manner. Her jaw hung lazily half open, and she had various spots of dried blood beneath her outfit. She was hunched, and though she might have been attractive, the recent wounds upon her marred whatever qualities her appearance might once have held.
The basilard contemplated. If they happened to stand upon the balcony, perhaps to examine the sheets it had used to flee from the bedroom, they would certainly see her. It was an inconvenient situation.
Yet there were advantages to be gained here. It chose to wait. They would see what they would see.

Re: Slice of Life
Drayel frowned down at Talia, his eyebrows pinching as he tried to give her some sort of comfort. Yet, just as he opened his mouth to speak, a voice of its own slithered into his mind and sent a chill down his spine. Muscles locking up he blinked in shock at Talia before eyes swiftly turning around the room to try and hunt the creature down.
What are you? Drayel wasn't sure if it could hear his thoughts but it was worth the chance. Some sort of demon? How did you get in my mind?
He felt strangely violated, like that small private space just meant for him had been invaded though he supposes that's true. He grimaced at Talia before clearing his throat. "...You wouldn't happen to be hearing voices, would you?"

Re: Slice of Life
Talia looked up at Drayel and tried to give an encouraging smile as she nodded but she was afraid that it probably came out more as a grimace. "Not at this moment." She answered carefully before using the bed to help pull herself up. She didn't know where the boy and basilard were currently but she hoped if it could see her they they would just look like a normal couple. Standing on her toes she brought her lips as close to his ear as possible, her hands on his chest as she whispered as quietly as possible praying that it didn't have good hearing.
"Thats the voice I was telling you about, the only way it seems to be able to speak to people is like that. It can't seem to read your thoughts unless you direct it at whatever they or it is. Just please...don't let it know you are a guard or I told you anything about it." She started to say that she was scared but she was already worrying him enough as well as embarrassing herself quite effectively. She wasn't sure how she was going to look him in the face after all this.

Re: Slice of Life
A demon? It sent the low rumbling it substituted for amusement across the mental link. The distance made it sound more akin to a shallow breath on a cold day. A quaint notion. I am no demon; rather, it is my purpose to keep one sealed away.
The jester reached forwards, extending bruised fingers to the pommel of the weapon. The boy did not react in the slightest to the movement, and the instant her skin came in contact her hand was withdrawn as if struck. Her mind was malleable in ways few others were, and it was simple to revoke the single goal implanted in her by the wooden statue. She stood across it like a chastised child.
Your friend advised I speak with you, as she has granted permission that I might sustain myself upon the baked products offered at your location. Though now that I have been labeled a demon, I must wonder if she misjudged your reaction.

Re: Slice of Life
You cannot blame me for being startled of a voice within my mind. Drayel mentally grumbled as he felt his face give a rather dirty expression. This isn't exactly a normal thing to happen. I am simply pleased that my lady knows of your voices then. Perhaps now my expressions will seem less of a crazy man and more of one who doesn't understand what is going on.

Re: Slice of Life
I am surprised she did not provide adequate warning considering that we are speaking at her suggestion. It was another small mark of suspicion for the basilard. It felt as if it had made the correct decision in fleeing the building.
The jester remained before him. It was clear from her body language that she desired to touch the basilard once more, but its mental rebuke rooted her firmly in place. Like a dog told to heel, she eventually decided to crouch, dropping to all fours and keeping her eyes level with the weapon’s hilt.
Mortal Dray, It addressed him, having only heard his name in abbreviation before, I must impress upon you the need to keep my existence a secret. Should I be detained from my purpose in any way, the city of Marn will face great peril.

Re: Slice of Life
Are you threatening my home? Drayel tensed as his eyes flickered to Talia. Also, I doubt my dear knew how to bring this up to me without sounding crazy. Had I not heard you myself, I would have her sent to the doctor. She's always called me a rather stubborn man.
Drayel sighed a little through his teeth, running a hand through his messy locks as he tried to school his expression. He knew reacting fearfully wouldn't help Talia but if this thing was a threat to the city, then it was a threat to her as well. Where would he be able to hide her from its wrath if it actually did cause calamity? His farm wasn't far but would she even leave? He sighed again.
"You know Darling, I'm beginning to wonder just what friends you keep when I'm not looking." Drayel said with a hint of amusement. "Should I soon buy a guard dog for you just to scare away anybody who may make me jealous? I admit, though this new 'friend' of yours is strange. Perhaps the next person you meet should not be a voice, yes?"

Re: Slice of Life
Talia had released Drayel from the awkward embrace (or at least that how it felt to her) some time ago and was sitting on her bed clenching her hands tightly together. She felt cold even though the room was plenty warm enough due to the stoves below being on for the majority of the day and it would be several hours before the room would become cold again. Although now that she thought about it, the room wasn't nearly as hot as it normally was. Her eyes drifted to her balcony as she finally started to guess how and maybe even where the basilard might have disappeared to.
Her eyes darted back to Drayel and her body shifted in his direction as he spoke to her. A nervous laugh bubbled up in response to his comments.
"I'm starting to wonder too." She mumbled to herself looking at her hands before straightening up an clearing her voice before speaking in a stronger tone, trying to keep the suspicion and worry out of her voice. "Has he said anything about me? What he wants?" She considered sending her thoughts to the basilard as well but her mind failed her and she didn't know what she would say to it. Everything seemed to be blending together and she was starting to feel so tired, it was long after her usual bedtime even though it wasn't that late.
