There was little Annel could do to mask the admiration in her eyes as she gazed up at Syrinia to answer her question, her voice quavering as she spoke, “I have a…a little of everything, dear. If you should find something you fancy eating let me know. Have whatever you like.” And with that she bowed her head slightly and stepped swiftly out of Syrinia’s line of vision, walking rearward until she felt her back press firmly against the stone wall of the kitchen. The Amazon eyed Annel for a moment, her eyes hardening more and more as she continued to stare. Annel swallowed hard, fear creeping into her eyes as she stared back at Syrinia. A few seconds passed before Syrinia smirked and started towards the pantry, never once taking her serpentine eyes away from Annel, who was smashed so rigidly against the wall that she was nearly part of it herself.

She watched the Amazon scan scanned the pantry’s contents, her body trembling and perspiring, a million different thoughts racing through her mind.

“Will I ever understand this strange giant of a woman…?”

As Syrinia allowed her gaze to wander over the large amount of contents contained in the kitchen’s pantry, she speculated why someone would even wish to eat some of the things stored here. She had never seen such odd ingredients before, and then the thought occurred to her: perhaps some of these materials were not actually food. Her eyes narrowed at the notion but she quickly shoved it aside, giving her mind more room to contemplate what exactly she could devour out of the expansive quantities of components resting on the five shelves before her.

After a long while of seeking, the amazon’s eyes finally fell upon a medium-sized loaf of brown bread. It would do for now, at least it was a change from her usual diet of mostly fruit and sometimes wild animals whenever she could find one just waiting to fall victim to her experienced hunting skills.

Taking the loaf of bread from the pantry, she quickly sunk her sharp teeth into the soft edge, instantly piercing through the bread like a whetted sword’s blade. The loaf stood no chance against her draconic incisors, ripping through it like a starved tiger through a fresh piece of meat. It was funny how she fought so hard to leave her dragon-like tendencies behind, but when it came to food, especially something she rather enjoyed, it was almost impossible to keep her instincts hidden. She only hoped Annel would not see past her façade and find the secret she kept so dear to her.

With a lengthy sigh, Annel slid down the wall and sat with her eyes glued to Syrinia. She watched the Amazon’s forehead crease with confusion as she continued to stare into the pantry. Syrinia’s eyes narrowed in puzzlement as she stared at the assortment of jars, bottles, and the accumulation of various things Annel and Astra had stuffed onto the shelves and into baskets and sacks…things one would not commonly find in a kitchen pantry. Annel scowled at her disorganized pantry.

“I suppose I should offer some assistance, the poor thing looks absolutely bewildered…”

Just as Annel had risen and opened her mouth to speak, Syrinia seized and consumed an entire loaf of bread. “Wha…how did you…By the Gods, woman!” Annel stammered and came to look up at Syrinia, her eyes wide as she looked the Amazon up and down a few times before smiling sweetly up at Syrinia. “Either you’re starving or I make very delicious bread!” Annel exclaimed as she reached up to brush a few crumbs from the Amazon’s mouth.

Holding back a slight growl that was just yearning to be heard as Annel brushed the crumbs off the amazon’s mouth, Syrinia simply stared and listened as the young woman before her exclaimed her shock at the swiftness she had employed in consuming the loaf of bread. She was relieved to find her disguise had yet to be revealed, though, and Annel seemed to only think of Syrinia as one who had not tasted a piece of food for a long period of time. This was just fine with her, and she decided to go along with it.

“I must admit, it was rather appealing,” she replied, unsure of what else to say at the moment. She was still hungry, but perhaps it would be best to avoid any situations that may expose her for who she really was. Yes, Annel was apparently fine having humans around, but what were her thoughts on shifters? Syrinia thought it would probably be in her best interest to not find out the answer to that question.

Annel smiled shyly at the compliment and rocked back and forth on her heels, a childish habit she had yet to shed at twenty years. “Really? Well…thank you, dear. I can make you something more to eat if you like. And, um…” She said as she knelt down and reached into a small basket on the bottom shelf of the pantry, “just a guess…but I think you may have a fondness for apples. So here, eat this while I make something else for you.” Timidly, she stood and offered Syrinia an apple. “I don’t mean to brag, but I’ve been told I grow the best apples in the village.” Annel said, a bit of nervous laughter escaping her as she waited for the Amazon to take the apple.

The thought of Syrinia’s hands being anywhere near her body frightened her immensely, although strangely and contradictory enough, she had no aversion whatsoever to the opposite. For whatever reason, Annel found herself searching for any opportunity to touch Syrinia. Strange, she thought to herself as she watched the Amazon stare with wide eyes at the lovely red apple.

Cautiously reaching for the fresh-looking apple, Syrinia sniffed it only once before sinking her sharpened teeth into the luscious fruit, her taste buds dancing as the juicy flavor traveled down her entire being. The people in Annel’s village were definitely right; she did grow the sweetest and most delicious apples, but probably in all of Pal Tahrenor, not only here. Taking yet another bite, Syrinia decided to simply observe Annel’s next move instead of replying to her question, not wishing to burden the elf in cooking something for her after already having caused her so much trouble. She was extremely grateful for Annel’s generous nature, but she would never even consider using it to benefit herself.

“My intuition never fails me. I’ll keep in mind that you fancy apples during your stay.” Annel said, giving Syrinia a playful wink. “Would you…like something to drink? I was going to have tea. Do you drink tea?” She offered Syrinia a pleasant smile as she reached into one of the smaller cabinets to produce two small cups. She placed them on a small octagonal table beside a window. She looked at Syrinia for a moment before pulling out a chair and motioning for her to sit. “Come and sit, dear. You should try to rest as much as you can.” The Amazon looked baffled. Annel cocked her head to the side and watched with concern as Syrinia stared at her with absolute bewilderment. “What’s the matter, Syrinia? Did I do something wrong?”
