(NPC POST)

'That is good news, Haegrath of Zaekonspeare. I am Uk-thak. Join me.' With that he tucked the axe into a cylindrical holder, plunged his talons into the bloody carcass, and swiftly ripped the carcass in two. One half tossed forward as a gift to Haegrath.

Whatever doubts there were about the thing's strength, they were swiftly dispelled by that action. Now with a better look, one could see muscles like wire, a sure sign of one far stronger than it's size would dictate.

'If you are wondering, chief, I am a half-troll. Faraenk sent me.' Uk-thak announced. Looking past Haegrath, he nodded to the rogue, made a shooing gesture with his claw, signalling for him to leave.

With the human gone, Uk-thak smiled, revealing twin rows of dagger-like teeth. 'Good. Now Aefell is gone, we can discuss your plans here more freely.' Then a pause for thought. 'Or, I can give the latest report from Zaekonspeare.'

He left the choice up to Haegrath. After all, that choice was a chieftain's right.

Haegrath took the piece of meat, devouring a large part with the gusto typical of a now-hungry troll. After he is finished, he replies, "Thank you, Uk-thak of Zaekonspiere. I have not eaten in some days." And this half-troll seemed stronger than he appeared, as well as having the proper speech of Faraenk. It was something Haegrath was picking up slowly, but Uk-Thak would make a good commander.

"Faraenk. Then you bring news?" The troll chief pondered the situation for some time. "If she has new plans, we will talk of them. Unless there is strong news to share. Tell me if there is."

Uk-thak beamed with pride when he heard himself be addressed as "of Zaekonspiere." Such acceptance was unexpected. He had figured that the chieftain would consider him an outsider, a welcome and allied outsider but an outsider nontheless.

'News. Other troll gangs, not of Zaekonspeare, but could be allies or recruits, being killed with knights armed with fire and great maces. May make it harder for nation to grow.' One would wonder if the concept of "knights" was known among trolls, but it was apparantly known to Uk-thak.

His rubbery brow furrowed in confusion at the mention of Faraenk's plans. 'You chief. The plans are yours.'

"Of course they may be." Haegrath glowered at this unexpected news. The trolls were his. His! This must not be. "Haegrath will take his guard to deal with knights with fire and maces. How many knights, does Uk-Thak know? You bring most important news."

Then his glower decreases slightly at his new underling's confusion. "Of course Haegrath has the plans. Faraenk takes care of things where Haegrath is not. Haegrath can only be in one place; others can be in many."

A swift change in the eyes marked that Uk-thak noted the sudden change in Haegrath's manner. 'I not know how many.' Uk-thak confessed, 'The trolls who gave the reports were not good with numbers.' A mildly sheepish expression crossed his gnarled and fearsome face.

Following that was a moment of pondering, 'The knights are well-prepared to fight trolls. May cost us some good troops. Or could lose more trolls than would join us.' Somehow this situation had become worse. 'Might want to bring in others for battle, others the knights be less ready to against. Aefell could find them for me.' the half-breed suggested.

Then, to cover his minor mistake, Uk-thak explained, 'Faraenk's orders were to go find you, chief, report and serve however necessary.' For a troll, he had astonishingly little trouble with the word "necessary."

"Many, though? And prepared against trolls?" Haegrath puzzled over this for some time before nodding. "Trolls not good with numbers, but they do not win fight. We need more, then. If they fight best with trolls... would your kind work better against knights with flame?"

Then his brain, quite large although rather ineffective, went into gear again. Uk-thak had said that these knights were prepared against trolls. But he had also said that Aefell could bring in fighters the knights would not work well against. A spark of cunning glittered in his eye for a moment before fading. "Aefell knows other warriors? Not trolls?" The chief grinned, slightly maliciously. "Let others fight knights, my trolls come along for backup. Let Aefell find."

Uk-thak took that as authorization from the chieftain. Of course, now he would have to go and chase down Aefell, but that was a small inconvenience. And the time afterwards could be used for a few other trips that were needed.

'Merc-en-aries.' The word was said slowly and carefully, Uk-thak's talent for speech was limited, despite his apparant intellect. 'Aefell knows soldier-woman, she can find troops quickly. She will want paying, but I have stash of booty to use. Best bring soldier-woman with us too, she will know much about how best to fight knights.'

With that, Uk-thak stretched his lean form upright, and began towards the stairs. His intent to find Aefell and pick up his stash of booty. Moving past Haegrath, giving the chieftain respectful space, he pushed open the trapdoor, where the inky blackness had gathered.

Haegrath sat, pondering, in the darkness of the subterranean room. A soldier-woman... mercenary? That was the word he had used. Someone who will fight if given money. Yes, that was right. Haegrath also had some money for paying. Although he also was one who hoarded, such circumstances called for the use of wealth. If it would prevent trolls from dying, why not?

Still, the ruler of the trolls did not mind getting in a bit of a fight now and then. When his advisor arrived, he would send one of his messangers to summon his guard. Then he would join the battle. What with the humans whom they weren't prepared against and the best of the troll fighters, these paladins would soon become a meal. That was the sort of thing trolls were good at. Perhaps this woman would even tell them useful things about fighting humans. Perhaps the trolls would remember these things for the future, and then humans would be even more pathetic creatures.

Hopefully, though, the knights with fire and maces would not have brought those cursed magic-users with them. Haegrath had some measure of protection against such things, but most trolls were completely helpless in the face of such things. Maybe he would have some of the more proficient half-kin come along as well. Just in case. The mass of muscle rose to its feet and lumbered over to the exit, following the follower out into the lighter darkness.

(NPC POST)

Dragging himself clear from the trap-door, Uk-thak rounded the building and came to a massive door. He made a failed attempt to be gentle with the door as he dragged it open. Light and warmth spilled forth from the the doorway.

'Get me Aefell!' he growled, grabbing the attention of everybody in the room.

There was a pause, presumably the delay until someone had found Aefell.

'Get me Ardise.' the brute demanded, 'Woodland meeting, usual spot. Tell her this is big.'

Whatever was said seemed to satisfy the beast, which turned away with a shark-like grin before remembering to close the door.

'We go gather loot now chief.' suggested the trollspawn, 'Then take meeting with the mercenary.'

Things were in motion, power would be gained. The foolish knights who dare oppose Zaekonspeare would fall screaming, beneath a flail or an axe or simply arrow and pike.

They would fall.

And they would suffer.
