The Fox and the Hound
Re: The Fox and the Hound
Hearing Kitan's comment Shade pinched up his face and gave Kitan the stink eye, before further pouting when he realized Gia wasn't on his side either. He grumbled unhappily but let it lie while Drayel snorted in amusement, his face cracking in a grin.
"As much as I'd agree young man, I suggest you watch that tongue of yours." Drayel mused as he reached over and ruffled Kitan's hair. "One day it will get you in quite the trouble. On that note, I'm sorry Gia but hunting that man will do no good. If we kill him, it will send a price on our heads and we ourselves will be hunted for murder. No, the best way to avoid problems is to lie low. I can only do so much but between us four we need to find ways of avoiding him. Especially you Shade."
"Yeah, I get it." Shade grouched as he stuck his nose in the air. "Smell, see, scramble routine."
"Indeed." Drayel nodded as he glanced at Gia with a tight smile. "I understand you are busy, but would you mind keeping an eye on these two? Shade isn't quite responsible and I'm afraid the boy can't fight out of a bread box. Would you mind? I'd keep an eye on them but it's safer if we aren't constantly together. Too easy a target when we're in one group."

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Gia couldn't stop her giggle when the little fox said Shade must be a wagon too. Maybe he had a point - two wagons would probably get along very well, though Gia had seen wagon accidents before and they tended to be awful... though what she had gathered about Shade's relationships was pretty awful too. A wagon wreck would be a good thing, perhaps. If they were in the woods, she would have caught a rabbit for the fox in praise of his logic.
When Drayel asked her to keep an eye on the pair of males and denied her idea of hunting and tracking and killing the Bad Man, Gia sighed heavily. She did have other things to do, it was true, though she hadn't caught scent or sound of the shadow priest in their various mad dashes over the city. So really she only had one other thing to do, and if the object of her hunt wasn't in the city she either needed to move on or... something else.
She couldn't give up on the shadow priest. And she did have to lie low anyway, less Master Bela find out his errant wolf was back. "Fine," she agreed with another sigh. "We lay low. And I will stay with the little smart fox and the big stupid wolf. But if I see the Bad Man again, if he threatens us again, I will do my best to kill him." She didn't think she could help herself if he showed his face again. He made the wolf roar and cringe at the same time and he stank of shifter blood and fear and pain and arrogance and hate and Evil. Gia bared her teeth in a feral grin that was absolutely humorless. "If you knew the scent of Evil like I do, you would already be chasing him down."

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Kitan tilted his head to the side with a bemused expression at the reactions his comment gathered. Shade didn’t seem to be happy with him at all, but Drayel and Gia had been amused. The little kitsune supposed he should look on the bright side, since entertaining two out of three people was a success in his book, even if he wasn’t sure what he had said which was so humorous.
“So... what now?” He wondered aloud. “I haven’t really been in a situation like this before. Do we stay moving or just try and keep quiet?”

Re: The Fox and the Hound
"Well, you can run for it but I can't." Shade grunted as he pointed at his collar with a snort. "This bloody thing won't let me leave anywhere past two miles around the city walls. I can't leave without either getting my throat pierced, shocked, or alerting the high guards."
He let out a low snort as Drayel snorted as well.
"Indeed." Drayel said dryly. He glanced over at Gia and Kitan with a dull grunt. "If it comes to it, I have a place to hide you though Shade it will be near your boundries. It won't be comfortable. Hiding there at night may prove useful though and I doubt that bloody fool will think I'd bring you near there at all. Kitan, Gia. If you wish to leave the city to flee, there is nothing holding you here. I can protect Shade with or without you. The choices are up to you though I feel to warn you, things are going to get rough and rather quick."

Re: The Fox and the Hound
That damn collar again. It caused nothing but trouble and still the big wolf was grateful - grateful! - for it. Gia stifled her instinctive comments and huffed a sigh instead. Without that collar this would be so much simpler. Actually, if they just let her hunt and track and find and kill, this would be much simpler too. It'd be positively easy if they'd just join her and hunt as a pack!
But no, Gia was not going to get into that pack mentality. That only led bad places and anyway, she was here on a mission. She had just been... distracted a bit. Packs were well and good, but Gia was not going to get involved with a wolf who was content to be collared. That was asking for trouble.
"You ask me to help look out for the big stupid wolf and then you tell me I may go?" Gia tilted her head, confused. "I said I would stay. And if things will be getting rough quickly, as you say, I would much rather be here. I do not want to leave a Bad Man like that one running around for long."

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Kitan stood still, blinking as those words washed over him. Leave the city? The little shifter hadn’t even considered it, though he guessed the situation was certainly dire enough that hiding seemed sensible.
Kitan briefly entertained the notion of going to his father’s shack in the woods, raising his hand and eyes as if about to speak, but rejected the idea before he formed so much as a whisper. Enough people knew about his father at the post office that if the Hand asked the right questions, it was possible they would find them. Father had traps and a crossbow, but wasn’t likely to stand against the combined weight of Marn if a few guards went missing after investigation.
Although... his father was a dwarf, and he supposed the Hand wouldn’t be happy about that either. Kitan bit his lip indecisively before he realized something. Shade had a sort of family as well. “But what happens if the hand comes here? What about Lucy and... uh, her daughter?” He didn’t know their names, but he was convinced that they were werewolves. “The hand does use silver. They could find out.”

Re: The Fox and the Hound
"The hand will not harm them. They're human." Drayel explained with a wave of his hand. "Lucy and Rebbecca are their names by the way. Gia, I'm glad you stay in all honesty. Somebody has to keep this... what was it? Big stupid wolf in line while I'm on patrol. I doubt it'll be long before they strike."
"You make me sound weak." Shade accused as he sat with his arms crossed and huffing.
"You may not be weak physically, but if a guard orders you to kill yourself then you haven't much choice. I'd deactivate that collar again but look what happened the first time." Drayel snorted in disgust and Shade grumbled. "Anyway. I presume they'll attack within the next few days. That guard has been known to be rather... hasty with his decisions. Bringing his friends may give him some muscle but I doubt they'll actually make a plan."
"I still don't like this." Shade huffed.
"and I don't like it either nor the way I'm dragged once again in your mess but I do not complain, do I? Now shut it pup, the adults are talking."
Shade made a face, pulling at the collar for a second before slouching in his chair with a furious snarl. Drayel snorted in response.
"Alright. Kitan, we're going to get you some clothes to cover up those ears and such with. Gia, I need you to guard the house as either wolf or human but if you're wolf don't wander from the property. I need you to take the scents that have been near the house and keep track of them. With some luck, if anybody wanders near you'll smell them."
Shade grunted and tilted his head, Drayel glared at him.
"You? You can damn well sit there until I decide just what to do with a stupid dog. At least Gia has her uses."

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Typical. Humans were safe, when others had to hide in fear... even if those humans did associate and shelter shifters. Not that Gia wanted anything to happen to Lucy or Rebecca, of course - they had seemed like nice humans, if a little stupid for hanging around with the big wolf - but it was so frustrating to realize that just because they were human they were safe. Being a part of a hunted and feared minority did not agree with Gia.
Surely the big wolf could just control himself for a change! He'd be fairly useless in a fight stuck in his human form, Gia was sure. Oh, he was probably a decent fighter as a human, but Gia had found that the best way for a shifter to fight was a combination of their forms, changing shape quickly and fluidly to catch their opponents off guard. Course, Shade wasn't exactly the quickest to transform, so maybe... Gia sighed. This would be so much easier if the wolf had a single scrap of control! Honestly, who just let a young wolf run around with no idea how to control his abilities? If she ever found out more about his life, and if she discovered who bit him (if he was bitten, of course), she would want to track that wolf down and have a conversation. It was just pathetic to turn someone and then let them figure everything out on their own. And if he was born a shifter, his parents should be ashamed of not teaching him control.
She listened as Drayel spoke, then caught her breath at his last words. He thought she was useful? That threw her into a whirlwind of thought. The shadow priest had thought she was useful. Master Bela had thought she was useful, though she had ended up failing him. All she ever wanted was to be useful. She barely contained an elated smile and instead nodded sharply. "I will guard as a human. I don't exactly look like a dog when I shift. And I will smell if anyone comes near who should not be. I have the Bad Man's smell in my nose still - if he has spoken to anyone and they come around, I will smell him on them. He had a... memorable stench." They didn't seem to be understanding about how Evil had a smell, but Gia would overlook that for a time. She was useful!

Re: The Fox and the Hound
They were human? Lucy and Rebecca were human? But he had seen... He gave Lucy an odd look, and was about to open his mouth when it hit him. It had been a delusion. Either that, or Drayel didn’t know that they were werewolves, but surely they would speak up, now that the Hand was about with their silver and fury.
Those things were getting sneaky. He groaned and curled into a ball, wondering at all the things that seemed to be going wrong. At least that meant he didn’t have any more to pay off.
“Will I ever be free?” He whispered to himself. “Why is this happening?” He turned back to the conversation in time to hear Drayel suggest they find him a disguise. He put his hands to his ears and flattened them against his head, wondering how much they would make a hood stand out. Oh well. Something was better than nothing.
He stopped sitting down and spoke in a tone more depressed than normal. “Alright. Where can we find a cloak or something?”

Re: The Fox and the Hound
When Shade heard the whispering tone of Kitan, he blinked and looked over at the boy. Hearing the sad tone in his voice, he resisted the urge to sigh as he simply sat on his chair in silence. Unable to speak to the boy, he was forced to just watch as the boy looked helpless. Despite his stubborn urge to ignore the sinking feeling in his belly, he felt guilty for dragging the poor boy into this.
He hesitated before slowly looking around the table, at Drayel and Gia, at Lucy and Rebbecca. His eyes traveled over to the boy for a moment once more before settling back onto his hands. His teeth began to bare themselves as he clenched his fists, keeping his eyes low as he tried to fight down the urge to kick out and break something out of pure frustration.
He'd messed up his own life and now he was messing up Kitan's and Gia's. He did it again. His teeth hesitantly vanished again beneath a lowering lip, his fists unclenched as his eyes lost focus. No, they were harming the pack. It was their fault. He should've killed them and ripped out their throats with his dying breath. He shouldn't have let them come.
His eyes began to burn bright as he raised his glare to meet Gias.
Kill. Maim.... Hunt them...? he shuddered as the wolf began to push at the boundries of his mind again. No, hold back. Wait a while longer.... Wait until Drayel gives the word. Drayel is alpha, alpha didn't say to hunt.
He growled silently as his eyes darkened again into the normal color. He snorted heavily as he waited in silence. Glancing sideways he noticed Drayel's eyes on him with a hand resting casually on his dagger hilt. He grimaced to show he was back in control. Drayel nodded subtly as he turned to look at Gia.
"Alright Gia, thank you." Drayel said nodding politely. Turning his eyes to Kitan his eyes hardened and he let out a low growl of irritation. "Quit with the pity party boy. Life may be tough for you, but you have the option to run. You have no reason to stay and I gave you the choice. For you, finish with that moping then you and Shade can hunt something out. I'm sure between the two of you, you can scrounge up something."

Re: The Fox and the Hound
The little fox seemed to be nervous and whimpery about something, and Gia tilted her head at him. She could smell a slight bit of fear radiating from him again, as well as the tang of nervousness. "A cloak would be good," she agreed, hoping to pull the little fox from his whimpers. "I have a length of fabric in my bag, but a proper cloak would be better."
The big wolf shuddered and glared at her, and Gia returned his look blandly, forcing herself to not snarl in return. This was that control she had been teasing him about in the first place, and it would not look good to mock him for it now. The last thing any of them needed was a repeat of Shade's earlier performance.
She did almost snap when Drayel told off Kitan for his whimpering. "Leave the fox alone," she said, trying not to growl. "It's hard enough being a young shifter when you can't control yourself or hide properly, let alone if some tin-man guard starts bullying you. He's had a rough day. If I'm keeping your big wolf out of trouble, you could at least leave the little fox alone." She glared at Drayel and then deliberately looked away, a calculated sign of lack of fear.
Even though Gia agreed with Drayel for the most part, about the fox needing to buck up a little, if she got anything to say about it no guard was going to bully one of her own. They were being tormented enough by humans already - she didn't need Drayel adding his two Bishani. He was supposed to be on their side!

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Drayel’s harsh words hit something personal within Kitan. He froze up and remained standing, then slowly turned his head towards Drayel. His eyes were blank, staring at something remote beyond Drayel. His thoughts were of his delusions, that which tormented him ruthlessly and punished him for his powers. His voice did not sound like his own as he said, with an uncharacteristic dull edge to his voice, “We cannot run from some things, Drayel.”
The little shifter seemed unaware of the oddities of his behavior. The usual light in his eyes returned in mere moments, and his bouncing movement came with it. Gia growled out some defense for him, having presumably not been looking in his direction. Kitan unfroze fully as he turned to look at Shade, “I still don’t know where we should start.” He chirped, a smile splaying itself across his features. “Do we have a cloak I can use somewhere around here, or do we have to run to the tailor’s?” An idea hit him, and he started smiling even wider. He kept it to himself because he thought it might be an embarrassing thought to voice, but the idea of wearing a mysterious dark black cape enthralled his sense of story. Fidgeting about like a child, he eagerly awaited a response.

Shade kicked at the bottom o the table, his eyes locked on Drayel as he pointed sharply at his face. Drayel growled in disagreement but Shade kicked harder until Drayel gave in and gave the order for him to speak. Mouth released Shade let out a sharp coughing noise before turning to Kitan and grunting.
"I got somethin' that'll fit ya." Shade said flatly as he pointed upwards to his room. "Nothing exciting mind you but a black cloak outta hep you out. It'll be a bit big and probably a bit worse for wear but its somethin'. That sound alright with you Sir Drayel? Or should I perhaps go looking somewhere closer to a tailor make?"
"It will do." Drayel answered ignoring the sneer, his lips a flat line as he stared in disinterest at Lucy and Rebbeca. "If somebody asks where Shade is, tell them he was picked up by a guard and taken on a mission you weren't told about. Hopefully they won't push farther but if they do, tell them I took him. I doubt they would argue with the fact I took him."
"..." Shade silently motioned for Kitan to follow him before getting to his feet and walking up the stairs while Drayel continued to drill dull orders into his companions head. He didn't look back as he headed up the stairs, knowing his pup would follow sooner or later.

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Gia liked it when the big stupid wolf was silenced. It made the conversation much less full of prickly pride and testiness, and she let out a soft sigh when the guard told the wolf he could speak again. All good things must come to an end, she supposed.
The wolf spoke to the fox and told him he had a cloak for him and the two left for upstairs after Shade exchanged more snappy words with the big guard. Gia had almost forgotten that Lucy and Rebbeca were still in the room, though the little girl still smelled lightly of fear. Humans, she thought to herself. The wolf agreed, voicing her displeasure in the back of Gia's mind with a low, murmuring growl. It wasn't overly hostile but it was not at all friendly either... despite how nice these humans were to the big wolf, that did not mean they were good to be around for longer than necessary. Humans led to trouble, always.
She listened to Drayel nattering on at Lucy about what to say before cutting in. "Is this all for now, Guard? If we are being hunted I dislike staying in one place."

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Kitan tried to hide his smile and failed miserably. The cloak was torn up? The situation just kept getting better. He scampered up the stairs after Shade. On the way, he briefly wondered if a dark black mysterious torn up cloak would just draw even more attention to him than it otherwise would, but he rapidly decided his ears were even more conspicuous in his eagerness to wear the article of clothing.
As Shade led him over to the closet and revealed the garb, Kitan slung himself into it and shoved his ears into the hood roughly.
He looked like nothing so much as a deformed madman. His ears did bend to fill the hood, but they exerted constant pressure outwards as they attempted to remain true to his anatomy which produced two rather large bulges on both sides. In addition, it was painfully obvious what they were from the front.
Kitan smiled a pained grin. Even he could not deny how noticeable his state of affairs was, though it was perhaps a slight improvement over his fully visible ears. “I’m not sure this will work very well.” Kitan mused. “Maybe if we found something to...” He contemplated the idea he had been about to suggest, and realized it sounded very uncomfortable. He went through with it anyways. “Maybe we could tie my ears down before putting on the hood? With a long cloth or rope or something?”
