The girl made her way outside to the well where she quickly began pumping water to fill the pitcher for Chrish and Nia. Frowning, Keris couldn't stop thinking about the strange man's words. Leave Shim? But where would she go? She did not know anyone outside of the village... the thought was a frightening one. What would she do if she left anyway? She had little skills outside of farm and house work.

Meanwhile, Keris father was puzzled. As he had left the house he had noticed something peculiar. Next to a man's set of footprints in the soft dirt coming towards were those of a deer - and no sign of a woman's prints. It was not impossible that their unusual guests had a tame deer to ride... though he had never heard of such happening. After all, they were not from around here according to the man's explanation. But if that was the case... where was the animal? An uncomfortable feeling rose in the pit of his stomach, and as he saw his daughter heading to the well, he decided to ask her before coming to any difficult conclusions.

Keris looked up when she heard someone approaching. It was her father, with an odd expression on his face. He did not speak until he was close enough that no one else would overhear their conversation. "Tell me, daughter... I did not see our guest's steed in the barn - did you put it to pasture?"

It was Keris' turn to look confused, "They had no horse - they were on foot."

Her father paused long before continuing, raising Keris' curiosity. "Have you seen any deer around the house?" Sometimes deer did pass through the farm, but they usually kept to the far edges of the fields, never before approaching the house.

Keris shook her head, "No... why do you ask, father? What is wrong?"

Looking grim, the man let out a slow breath. "Never you mind, girl, finish your duty – take the water to our guests then leave them alone.” He turned sharply and stalked back to the barn, leaving his daughter extremely confused, and somewhat afraid. What kind of people were in their house?

Swallowing hard, Keris lifted the pitcher and retraced her steps back to the house. Upon reaching the spare room, she paused outside the door for a moment. Someone was walking – their steps making an odd clomping sound. Then a huge sneeze was heard, and Keris could not help giggling aloud at the response.

Chrishton shut his eyes in the last second to stop Niabi's spittle.

"Sexy."

He wiped his face with his sleeve, and then flicked Niabi's nose playfully.

"Dun sneeze on people. Ain't nice. Ain't normal."

Taking her by the wrist, he pulled her down to the place beside him on the bed. It was a pleasant enough room. Clean enough - he didn't notice the dust that Niabi did - and more importantly, private enough to have a little fun as long as they could keep things quiet later.

He couldn't help himself. She was an attractive creature, sneeze or no sneeze. His hand began wandering up her thigh when Keris' giggle revealed that she was coming back with their water. Chrishton was quick to snatch the hand away, although he was terrible at feigning innocence.

"'ey thanks again, Keris. Real nice o'ya t'elp us out." He said once she had returned.

Sitting was an awkward motion in this form. One set of knees bent forward and the other bent backwards into the strange-not-so-firm thing that Chrishton had nearly pulled her down on. It was clearly not a rock, it was far too soft and unnatural looking for that, nor was it a log as it lacked the smell of decaying wood and the insects that feed on such things. It was another one of those strange human things.

But before she could really spend anytime investigating the odd things within the small cavern of the man-cave, Chrish drew her attention back to more important matters. He understood her need to reproduce.

She may have been made drowsy by the human food that she had eaten and paranoid that the humans were plotting some sort of ambush, but the nagging voice in the back of her mind told her that she had other concerns to worry about. Her need to mate was eating away at her.

Then the young female human reappeared.

Nia again felt a sense of anger and jealousy rise up inside of her. She didn't really understand these feelings, but she did understand that this girl's presence put her at a disadvantage as she stole the attention of her mate away from her. She remained on the bed but she regarded the other female with a glare that was meant as both a warning and a challenge.

Upon entering the room and seeing the pair seated on the bed Keris blushed bright pink, though she tried to disguise her embarassment by quickly turning to place the now-filled pitcher of water by the basin. She could only hope that her burning cheeks had paled by the time she moved to face the man as he spoke to thank her.

She could not help but notice how attractive the man was... even with - or perhaps because of - his unkempt appearance. She flushed again, lowering her eyes and hoping that he would not notice her discomfort. "You... you're welcome. If you... or your..." she paused, unsure of what title she should give the woman. Wife? Mate? She decided it was safer to use the woman's name. "If you or Nia should need anything... my room is across the hall," she motioned with a slight gesture of her head.

Looking back at the pair, Keris noticed the strange woman's dark expression that was pointed in her direction. She remembered her father's strange questions, and could not help staring back in return, as if trying to fit all of the pieces of this unusual puzzle in her mind. It was then that she noticed that something was odd about how the woman was sitting - but she could not figure out what it was that seemed wrong. Unable to bring herself to ask the question sitting on her lips, Keris turned away, deciding that it was best to do as her father had asked... to leave the strange people alone.

"Across the hall eh? Whassat? An invitation?"

Chrishton had no shame. He didn't miss Keris' blush, and was well aware that Niabi wouldn't understand what he was saying, so he just went ahead and flirted with Keris then and there. The man was only half joking about it, primarily aimed at seeing if he could make her blush until her head exploded... Not that he would refuse such an offer from her.

"Thanks though, Keris. We really appreciate it. Even Niabi 'ere. Or at least she'd appreciate it if she 'ad any idea what was goin' on. I think tryin t'kill ya is like 'er way of sayin she loves ya."

He nudge Niabi, barely noticing the way she was busy glaring daggers at their hostess.

"Right Nia? Be nice."

He looked back at Keris.

"Y'know, yer pop's a good guy an' just tryin t'look out fer ya... But when yer old 'nuff t'make yer own decisions, thats what yer gonna haveta do. There's a big world out there, an a lotta places where a healer kin do a lotta good."

A nudge from Chrishton was enough to draw her attention away from the other female for the time being. She still didn't like the way in which he was looking at her, but so far it had been nothing but a look. He had not made a move towards the other female and as often as she made her presence known, the female man had not tried to touch Chrish since they left the cave entrance.

As far as she knew, Chrish was hers for the next week or two. She would remain with him during that time and they would mate as often as possible. After which time if he wanted to pursue other females, he was free to do so. At least that was what she became accustomed to when dealing with other deer.

But Chrishton was no buck. He didn't necessarily follow the same mating habits that she did. Nia knew little about foxes and their habits, for all she knew they could be very different in their ways. With this in mind, she questioned how long she really had with him. But why would he go after the female men? Did he not know how dangerous they were?

To gain his attention again, and steal it away from the other female, Niabi rested her head up against his bruised chest.

If Keris' hair could have blushed - it would have. Fortunately for her, Chrish changed the subject, again mentioning that she might consider going 'away' someday. Unsure how to reply, Keris only nodded before turning to leave the room. As she quietly closed the door behind her, Keris looked up to see her mother standing in the hallway.

Words were unnecessary, Keris' eyes alone asked, "How much did you hear?"

The unspoken reply, "Enough."

Keris' mother followed her into the girl's room, shutting the door firmly behind them. It was not until they were both seated on the small bed that the older woman spoke. "Keris... what did that man mean by calling you a healer?" Her tone was falsly calm, with a hint of fear and uncertainty.

Keris considered lying... but knew denial was useless. Besides, a part of her wanted to tell her mother the truth - wanted who she really was to be in the open, not some dirty secret. "When they arrived," Keris began slowly, "the man, he was really hurt... he collapsed at our door... I HAD to help him!" Her expression was pleading - begging her mother to understand.

"No, Keris. I... I thought you had given up this nonsense years ago or I would have... Don't you understand child? It is not… not natural… what you are doing – it is not right!”

“But – he could have died!” Keris insisted. “Mother, how can helping someone be wrong?”

Her mother sighed and reached over to rub her daughter’s hand. “You are young, and so innocent… I know you are trying to help, but you are not. It is not in our hands to decide if someone should live or die, and it is wrong to try and change another person’s fate. If that man was meant to die – then he should have.”

Keris shook her head, “That doesn’t make sense…”

“I know it doesn’t now, you have seen so little of the world, but when you are older…”

“I am NOT a child,” Keris retorted, folding her arms across her chest.

Her mother’s eyes narrowed, “Keris, your father and I took you in as a foundling. We have cared for you – loved you – treated you as our own daughter. We have never harmed you or done anything but our best for you.”

Keris’ angry expression faltered, “I…I’m sorry, you have been a mother always to me.”

The older woman smiled softly, “I know you Keris, you have such a tender heart… but you will have to accept that there are things your father and I do… for what is best for you.”

“What… what are you going to do?” Keris asked, staring at the floor.

Her mother lifted Keris’ chin with her hand, “Do not worry. Tomorrow we will take you to Marn, to a priest of Theogios. I am sure they will be able to purify you from this curse.”

“Purify me?” Keris asked in a horrified tone, “What does that mean?”

Her mother’s eyes seemed distant and she did not meet those of her daughter, “Theogios calls us to a pure life – without magic. Magic in any form is a curse, Keris, and your father and I cannot let that curse remain in our home. It is the only way… to save you.” Her words were vague and less than comforting. The woman could not have been any clearer however, for though she and her husband considered themselves puradynes, they had never studied their belief system and only understood it as a “life without magic”. Keris’ mother was well-meaning, but had no idea how her words terrified the girl. “Get some sleep, Keris,” her mother continued, patting her daughter’s back. “We have a long walk into Marn tomorrow.”

When her mother was gone, Keris stared blankly at the wall for what felt like hours. Sleep was the farthest thing from her mind. Purified? How? Will I still be the same person when they are done? What if they can’t make me stop being a healer? Why is it so wrong?

Her questions had no answers – only leading to more questions. She thought of the stranger and his companion next door. He seemed to know about healers… perhaps even knew where others might be. Surely if there were healers out there then not everyone considered them cursed… Chrish had even implied that healers “did good” somewhere.

Keris had to ask. Before she could submit to her parents, she HAD to know.

Quietly opening her door Keris slipped across the hall. It was barely past midnight, surely the man and woman were now asleep. Biting her lip Keris tapped lightly on the door, hoping that Chrish would hear and respond – quietly.

"Ayeee..." Niabi's bid for attention by placing her head on his still badly bruised and sore chest made him pull away and hold her back by her arms. "Careful, goddamn."

He bid Keris goodnight as she backed out of the room, and then turned to face Niabi on the bed with one foot dangling off the side.

"Where were we?"

Chrishton pushed his hand up her inner thigh again, and forced her back onto the bed. He wasted no time properly enjoying what little time they had in a comfortable bed and spent the next half hour enjoying every curve of her body while showing her that whatever attraction he might show other females, she was the one he'd chosen.

Unlike their prior raunchy experience, this time Chrishton showed her how humans made love when they did it with affection. From the hooves she was so embarrassed about having, to her breasts and hips that she was so confident in using to lure men, he gave each part of her thoughtful, lustful attention before he took her with all his lust.

His only restraint was to keep his voice down, which was a good thing because it was just prior to his reaching a climax that there was a quiet knocking on their door. He almost didn't hear it, and was dead close to ignoring it, but he knew he couldn't. That sort of behavior only get them both thrown out.

With a push of his arm and an annoyed groan, he rolled off of Niabi and pulled the blanket up against them both to cover up their debauchery.

"Eh?"

Chrishton had to be the oddest fox that Niabi had ever met. His behavior and mannerisms were unlike any creature she had ever known. She knew far too little of men or how they acted among their own herds, but she had noticed that he seemed to fit in among their kind. He acted in their same strange ways.

But he was fox. She had seen it, she had smelled it on him, but he acted so so...she couldn't even began to understand the thoughts or feelings she felt involving his actions or how they made her feel. At first, she was hesitant and almost even a bit frightened to be pinned down on her back. She could barely move, she was left with no option to run away, she couldn't even defend herself if the men returned. She felt vulnerable among many other things, she wasn't even sure she felt comfortable with the weird things in which he did to her. The whole experience was just so different from what she had grown accustomed to.

It wasn't necessarily bad, but Nia wasn't completely disappointed when it came to an abrupt end. She was just so confused by the whole experience.

However, she wasn't looking forward to seeing the young female again. She didn't like the way that she looked at Chrish or the way he looked at her. She didn't like how she had tried to touch him or the strange words they spoke to each other. Men couldn't be trusted and that one was up to something. She was going to bring them harm and Niabi couldn't see a safe way out.

It was fortunate, perhaps, that Keris had neglected to bring the candle from her room with her across the small hallway. If she had then the pair on the bed would have seen a horrified, embarassed, blushing girl before them - and she would probably have dropped the candle, burning down the house as well.

Considering what she just interrupted, Keris almost wished she had...

"I'm sorry..." she gasped, her mind going completely blank as to why she had come in the first place. "I didn't mean... I thought..." Keris rambled on in an attempt to gather her thoughts - and the moonlit sight of Chrish's upper body was doing nothing to help her efforts.

She blinked rapidly, turning her head to keep from staring, and after taking one last deep breath she blurted out the reason for her intrusion. "I had to ask you about what you said before about healers doing good somewhere and I had to know if it was true because my mother overheard you and she believes it is wrong and tomorrow they are taking me to Marn to the priests because she said they can cure me of this curse but you seemed to think it is not a curse so I had to ask you before they take me because I don't know what to do..."

Her voice trailed off as Keris sniffed and began to cry...

With the blanket kept safely raised to provide a visual shield for Keris, he couldn't help but look amused by the whole situation. Keris was cute and it was flattering. Even someone like Chrish liked to know he could still make girls stutter. And part of her stuttering was because she found him attractive. That much he could tell.

Or maybe she was just curious and confused. Or maybe he just wanted to believe it. Not that it mattered in the end.

"'ey now... stop cryin', they'll 'ear ya..."

Trapped by the need for a blanket to cover both himself and Niabi, there wasn't much Chrishton could do to comfort her. Not in any appropriate physical way. Inappropriate physical ways ran the gamut...

"Yer mom's just doin' what she thinks is best. Doesna matter if she's right or wrong 'bout it."

He sat up and kept the blanket tucked against his lap.

"'Course y'kin do good with yer healin'. I dunno what I'd 'a done if y'adna been 'ere t'elp me. I owe ya m'life an' there ain't nothin' wrong with that. But she doesna understand that an' doesna see it the way y'do. Yer gettin t'be a big girl now an' yer gonna 'aveta make tough decisions like this. Dun let livin tucked away on a farm fool ya into believin' there ain't folks all around ya with this kinda problem.

"Hell, Niabi'n I 're downright demonic accordin' ta most people 'round 'ere."

Nia yawned in response to all the talking. Just trying to stay awake and pick apart the few things she thought that she could possibly understand made her feel extremely tired.

So much talking, she thought. The female man was obviously upset over something but Nia couldn't even begin to guess at what was upsetting her. Had she not gotten enough to eat after sharing her food with Chrish and Nia? Nia understood hunger. Or maybe they had upset the order of the man herd. Chrish appeared to be much more powerful than that of the the male Nia had seen within the mancave, and his very presence could be seen as a threat to steal his mates. Whatever the reason, Nia really didn't care so long as her own well being wasn't at stake for the time being.

She was having a hard enough time just trying to keep her eyes open and her head from falling forward, it was a fight that she was quickly losing.

"'ey now... stop cryin', they'll 'ear ya..."

Chrish's warning dried Keris' tears immediately. She had no desire to have her parents walk in right now. Explanations would be... difficult.

To make her own decisions... was she ready? Keris didn't really have a choice - or rather, her choice was made before she even realized it. Keris knew she would not be able to stop healing. Especially now - that she had seen a person near death brought back - healed by her touch. It was one thing to rescue animals... to save a person's life had lit a spark deep inside herself that Keris knew she did not want quenched.

But what of her parents? What would they do when she told them? Would they drag her before the guard? Keris bit her lower lip as possible dark consequences flashed through her mind. She barely heard Chrish as he continued, but the word "demonic" focused her attention back on the pair.

She flushed again as she realized the awkwardness of the situation, realizing that Chrish was working hard to keep the sheet covering himself and Niabi. Who were they? What were they? What was she getting herself into?

"I... should go," Keris murmured, "You have given me a lot to think about." She turned quickly, slipping out the door and shutting it quietly before Chrish could reply. As Keris turned to go back to her room she stopped short, almost dropping the candle she held and gasping in fear.

In the hall stood Keris' mother and father - their expressions grim.

Keris didn't give him a chance to answer. And just as well that she didn't. The choice was on her. For all that Chrishton imposed his will on others when it suited him, this wasn't one of those times. There was a smidgen of respect in him for the Shimians and their simple, isolated way of life. Farmers who just wanted to be left alone to their customs and their rules. He didn't want to trample through her family kicking up dust because he thought Keris needed more freedom.

He didn't want it on his shoulders if her parents never forgave her. Or worse, if they called the authorities on her.

"Damn if she ain't outta this place in a week anyway." He muttered, pretending Niabi could understand him. "Girl's already made 'er choice."

Flopping back into the relatively luxurious sheets, he shoved a hand behind Niabi's back and pulled her up against him. There was still time to enjoy another round before they got kicked back out into the woods.

She had nearly been asleep when Chrishton pulled her to him. She had forgotten where she was or even that she had been within the body of a woman. It was alarming being woken up that way. She wanted to pull her legs underneath her, turn her head around to survey her surroundings, and twitch her ears at the slightest noise but in this form she could not. Her legs felt strangely connected to her spine in an unnatural way and oddly disproportioned, her back legs were quite a bit longer than her front legs. Her ears did not move as she wanted them to and her vision was limited to that which was directly in front of her.

As her eyes focused to the dim lighting, she realized that it was Chrish that held her. For a moment she was sure that he was some sort of bear or other hungry creature of the woods trying to make a meal out of her, but no, it was Chrish. She relaxed in his arms.

"Chrish." She said with a sleepy smile on her face.
