Name: Artim Shivar
Age: 26
Race: Human
Height: 5'5"
Weight: 145 lbs

Physical Description:

Artim, though not a large man by any means is well built and is quite clearly a fighter. He has light brown hair that he wears pulled back into a short pony tail. His eyes are an unusual color, a blazing crimson that looks to some like there's fire in his eyes. Of course this isn't far from the truth. Fitting with his powers and profession he prefers loose fitting clothing generally in reds and oranges and is almost always seen in a crimson satin cape.

Posessions:

The one thing that Artim is almost never seen without is a rather unremarkable looking 6' metal quarterstaff. While outwardly it appears to be ordinary steel its actually made of a special metal which makes it slightly lighter and allows him to focus his pyrokinetic abilities. His armor, which appears as that of any other Battlemage's, is made out of the same metal which is also in the fingertips and palms of the customary red leather gloves that hlp denote him as a Battlemage. He also often wears jewelry, most noticably a platinum and ruby ring emblazoned with the crest of the Shivar.

Powers or Strengths:

Artim comes from a long line of personal protectors of the rich and powerful known as Flamebringers. This is for a rather obvious reason as they all have the power to manifest heat and flame with their minds. From a young age Shivar children that have the gift are trained in how to control it and use it properly. This ability can be used in spectacular blasts of flame or in more subtle ways like creating a warming feeling in an area. Some of the common manifestations, the more dramatic of which are saved for a last resort, include:

+ Artim can create an envelope of warm air around him, the temperature of which can be adjusted

+Artim has the ability to see/sense heat coming off an object. Generally this manifests as thermal vision.

+ Artim can focus heat on objects. This can either done by touch (most common) or at range, generally up to about 50'. Line of sight is required. Generally this ability is used to ignite objects, though lesser amount of heat can be used. This is Artim's favorite method of torture, causing burns to the victim's skin

+ Under certain circumstances, generally if a target is stationary or at least not changing direction, Artim can focus heat inside an object.

+ Artim can create bolts of flame which are generally shot from his hand or staff.

+ Artim can create the classic "fireball", though this is rather draining for him and is rather against his training which focused on more percise usage

+Though Artim has never done it, some Flamebringers have been known to basically look like they're on fire (think Human Torch). This ability requires immense focus since one wrong thought and the envelope that keeps the fire off the users skin will collapse and burn the user alive.

Given the current state of things and the restrictions on the use of magic the Flamebringers are now trained in more mundate combat techniques, generally with simple melee weapons.

Because of their long history catering to the rich and powerful and their more recent status as one of the larger providers of Battlemages, the Shivar have amassed rather impressive amount of financial resources in which Artim shares. He's rather well to do for himself and anticipates more wealth coming to him as he begins to make his way in Marn.

Weaknesses:

Pride cometh before the fall and Artim has no lack of it. He looks at other races with skepticism at best and in the case of elves in particular, contempt. He treats anyone he feels is "less" then him poorly and has very few friends. He also trusts next to noone, though that may not be a weakness given his line of work.

History:

Artim was born to Liam and Arestia Shivar at the Shivar Estate, a rather large residence near the center of Marn. Both his parents, like a fair number of his ancestors, were Battlemages, his family having a long history of producing pyrokinetic individuals. Intially they offered their services as bodygaurds, generally to rich and influencial individuals since the early days of Marn. In turn this lead to them becoming rich and influencial individuals in their own right. They weaved themselves into the fabric of Marnian society carefully and artfully. When the current regime took power and magic use became illegal, the Shivar shifted their focus from providing skilled bodygaurds to becoming a provider of Battlemages. It was rumored at the time that the Shivar were responsible, at least in part, for much of the legislation aimed at magic users as a mechanism to shut out competition though the house elders deny such claims to this day.

When it was realized that Artim had the gift of flame it became clear to him what his path was going to be though he didn't necssarily like it. He was faced with three basic choices, serve as a Battlemage, face imprisonment or execution, or live in exile. He chose the first and began training to use his powers as well as the other skills he would need to be sucsessful as a Battlemage. One of the most important things he was taught was how to observe people for even the slightest signs that they were using magic as well as how to use his own abilities to create and percieve heat. Mundane combat training was also a staple of his childhood. Artim, while he realized his path was set out for him, did his best to follow his true passion, art.

Shortly after he formally joined the Battlemages he was sent along with his father to investigate reports of an individual known as Verian. This man was suspected of causing several deaths in the countryside using an unusual form of magic that simply killed people without any outward signs of trauma nor any signs of poison or the like. It was also rumored that the last three Battlemages sent to find him were found dead in much the same way. The father-son pair trailed Verian for almost three years, nearly missing the fugitive mage on countless occsaions. Still though, they persisted as the number of deaths attributed to him mounted eventually leading inside the gates of Marn itself. Eventually an informant located Verian and Artim and Liam, along with a cadre of Guardsmen, went to arrest the man. Little did they realize their informant was actually paid by Verian to lure the duo into a trap. Verian, along with a number of other creturs that seemed to be not of this world, surrounded the group in a warehouse and attacked.

The guards were quickly dispatched by the creatures but the two battlemages fought well, a testament to their lineage. As the last of the creatures was about to be destroyed a black ray leaped from Verian's hand and struck Artim in the back. Artim's father though would not let his son be killed so easily and launched a gout of flame at the dark-cloaked mage, setting him ablaze. This was enough to disrupt Verian's spell, but only for a moment as, while burning alive, Verian managed to get off one more spell. Artim barely saw whatever it was that happened as he fell into unconciousness, drained by the attack. He awoke more then a day later. He was told that upon hearing the screams of the guards additional battlemages had been summoned to the scene and found only Liam's prized ring, one of platinum and rubies emblazoned with the Shivar crest and no trace of their quarry.

This was only months ago and the young Artim searches for answers...
