by Lucas Hild
Player Name: Becky
Name: Lucas Hild
Age: 35
Race: Human
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 180 lbs
Physical Description:
Lucas has coal black hair shot with streaks of silvery gray around his face. He keeps his hair neatly cut short and his beard clean-shaven. He has aged gracefully but not without scars. His mentor Torus Mirendis left him with more than a few reminders of his earliest lessons. There is one large star-shaped scar over his ribcage on the right side and the thickened remainder of a deep gash in his left leg. There are other marks but none as prominent as the first two.

He prefers to wear white and shades of gray and silver. He has an average frame, but is physically very strong. He does grueling, punishing work-outs every morning to ensure that he is still capable of physically overpowering his foes even when they have an advantage of youth.

Possessions:
Lucas has an impressive collection of rare and exotic weaponry, partly because he finds it interesting and also because he likes to study it.

Lucas Hild's Truth Stick: Lucas carries with him everywhere an enchanted battlestaff. On one end there is affixed a clear gem wound with frilly silver swirls. If he taps the staff on the ground twice the gem glows yellow/gold and anyone who attempts to speak a falsehood in its presence will be afflicted with excruciating pain as if affected by Hild's Anguish spell. ((And if you tell the truth and he still doesn't like you he might just bash you over the head with it anyway.))

Powers:
Lucas's original training focused greatly on illusion mastery, but over the years he has found his role as a battle mage enhanced by his knowledge of mind bending magic, something that he found he had a keen talent for. Lucas has refined many of his spells to only require a gestural component save for the ones that otherwise require some auditory effect. ((Most of his spells require keen concentration and would be nigh impossible if he was on fire, drowning, or otherwise in danger of dying without taking care of his personal predicament))

Lucas is well-suited and quite eager to demonstrate that he does not need magic to win a fight. He is very fit and knowledgeable with a wide array of weapons. One can assume he has at least passing familiarity with any hand-held weapon and sufficient experience with weapons of any given type to use it passably well. His favored weapon seems to be the battlestaff as he is fond of carrying his truth stick with him but when he is pretending to be someone else he often has to improvise. ((that darn truth stick is a dead give away!))

Specific Spell Talents
  • Moving Illusion - Lucas is able to create a silent illusion of himself or another person moving and acting like a normal human being.

Multiplied Self - This is the standard one of you ten of me spell to confuse and divert attackers. Lucas's version of the spell can create 5-10 copies of himself positioned however he likes within a 25 foot radius.

Illusory Space - He can create a scene which is completely false focused on an area of a similar shape and size. He could project this illusion into an alley and fool someone he is pursuing into thinking he has found a hiding place in a small building when he has actually just stepped into a trap. In an open area he could use this power to create a false "cabin" within a copse of trees.

Phantom Voice - He can use this power to throw his voice ahead of or behind a target location, or to mimic the sound of someone else's voice. This is useful if he wants to make someone believe he is not alone.

Permanent Illusion - This power is less useful except in a decorative sense. He can build an illusory scene that repeats itself indefinitely without his having to concentrate to maintain it. The scene is believable from a distance but up close it seems wrong or unnatural.

Confinement - This is a combination mindbending and illusory spell which causes the target being to feel as if they have been robbed of all of their senses. It causes blindness, deafness, and complete lack of feeling as if paralyzed but does not prevent movement or block the sensation of pain. This spell is part of his torture repertoire.

Alter Ego - Lucas is able to change his own appearance and voice to seem imperceptibly like someone else. Preparation for this spell is significant so he often chooses the same shape from one casting to another unless he has a specific shape in mind. The preparation is negligible if he has assumed the same shape and voice previously. Lucas can use this ability on someone else but the effect is not as flawless as if he were casting it on itself. It would also require a focus like an article of clothing which, when removed would also negate the spell.

Confidante - Lucas is capable of giving himself an aura of trustworthiness. Only a few rare people are capable of seeing through the aura. It's mostly harmless but tends to positively dispose most people to him. ((He's the "good" guy.)) People affected by the aura can have any number of reactions to it. They might see him as "friendly", "good", or maybe just "attractive"

Inquisitor - Like confidante except the aura tends to create fear and feelings of inferiority in others. Again, the exact result of the aura depends on the person affected.

Mind Shield - This spell allows Lucas to guard his mind from the intrusions of others. he can use this ability on others by using a focus like a helmet or a hat.

Send Thought - Lucas is able to speak in another person's mind like Telepathy. The range of his telepathy covers most parts of the city, minus some parts that are guarded from that sort of intrusion.

Errant Poltergeist - Lucas is capable of creating a small illusory servant of a shape he chooses at creation. The servant is similar to a permanent illusion in that he does not need to concentrate to maintain it. The servant is able to fly and carry messages over long distances. After reaching its destination if the recipient finds the servant's message insufficient, they are able to speak to Lucas telepathically through the servant.

Bind Thoughts - Lucas is able to enter the mind of another person. This requires him to be stationary and with his eyes closed leaving him vulnerable. While he is in someone else's mind he is often able to "see" memories and dig for answers. Unfortunately a clever target is sometimes capable of showing him falsehoods making this method imperfect from an interrogation standpoint without the additional administration of drugs which have other side effects.

Dominate - While binding another's thoughts Lucas is able to control their actions like a marionette, but he must successfully bind their mind first and requires Lucas himself to be in a vulnerable position. Others close to the target are likely to be aware that something is wrong with the person unless Lucas has spent a significant amount of time studying them or binding their thoughts. Without knowing his target very well, the target is often able to fight domination by producing errant remarks or actions that can clue in other people. ((Hastily sketched note, negating a statement, that sort of thing.))

Anguish - Lucas is capable of inflicting generalized yet excruciating pain on a target by focusing on their mind. The pain tends to be unique to the sufferer often seeming to clutch at what they perceive to be where they are physically weakest (an existing wound perhaps?).

Command - Lucas is capable of issuing commands that act directly on the brain of his targets. When he yells "stop" there is a very good chance that whoever heard him will be at least stunned momentarily as their brain realizes that the command was external and not issued from their own nerve core. A command can operate on a crowd or on an individual, but there is still often a "bleed off" of targets even when it is focused on just one because part of the spell component is the audible spoken command. Other commands he can use are "Drop", "Duck", "Die", "Hush", "Sit", "Kneel". The primary requirement for command words is that they are monosyllabic. The target must be capable of hearing for this spell to work. "Die" will generally fail to kill someone unless they're already on the brink of death and fighting to survive. In normal healthy people it can cause a brief stun effect much like "Stop".
Strengths:
Physically strong, willful, solid understanding of law and orderly conduct, Formidable magic that makes even some of his former teachers uncomfortable.

Weaknesses:
Lucas tends to be overconfident and arrogant. He doesn't approach any situation with the consideration that he could be defeated (most of the time he is right anyway). Despite his efforts to live a clean life, he gives in to his vices on more occasions than not. None of his spells are very well focused when he is sufficiently inebriated. Most importantly, Lucas does not often realize when enough is enough especially once he has given in to his temper. This is even more of a problem given how short-fused he can be at times.

History:
Lucas was born into a family with some means and was their only child. His earliest demonstration of magical talent occurred when he was just a child and he came home in tears after frightening his friends away with a slobbering blood-thirsty, true-to-life boogeyman. Without many other options, his parents sought out a teacher for him and sent him away to learn with Torus Mirendis. The seclusion of the deep hills left Torus a warped, callous man. He had few qualms with allowing Lucas to learn many things the hard way so long as the boy was not killed in the process. After all, he was the student and without a student, there would be no one to teach, or talk to in those weird morning hours when inspiration struck.

To this day Torus still considers Lucas to be his student. Lucas has grown beyond what Torus can teach, however and if the crazed hermit made an appearance the old man would be unlikely to do any serious harm. Lucas's violent anger on the other hand might be something to fear.

After leaving Torus, Lucas moved back home for a time. His parents seemed like strangers. They did not understand most of the things he talked about and they felt that he had become cold and distant to them emotionally. His father, fearing that the wizard hermit had damaged his son's moral fiber moved his family to Marn. Once in the city Lucas naturally gravitated to the battle mages and took immediately to their training; excelling in almost every area but choosing to focus on mind magic to build on what he knew of illusions. Lucas's family still lives in Marn but he does not talk about them or visit them very often. They do not have much in common.

Over the years he has made many arrests and almost as many enemies. He has only taught a few students since he tends to lose interest in pupils who do not meet his standards. With one exception, none of his students have gotten appreciably far after he disabused them of the notion that they could do magic. The only exception to his poor record with students would be Elaina Vivari, a woman who he had had the pleasure of teaching and fell in love with. She never completed the training to become a battle mage and instead left Marn to pursue other interests. Lucas believed that his love was reciprocated. They had planned to be wed when/if she returned to Marn. He has not heard from her in 6 years.

Aw, a lost love...

Okay, some people might object or think I'm crazy for approving this, but two things have to be known. a) it was a request and b) he's a battlemage. I did specifically ask for a powerhouse and we discussed it a bit. Being a battlemage is also a weakness in itself. If he doesn't do his job, he'll be killed, and they (the judges) -can- kill him with little trouble. So anyone reading knows whats going on in my head:

It's a nicely thought out profile and the powers fit together well. The spells aren't exactly that numerous; they look more like details of a general spell of illusion. ie. if he can make a whole scene he can probably also alter himself, duplicate himself, throw his voice, etc. That's a consideration. Also note the lack of any direct damage spells.

I will ask that Dominate and Bind Thoughts require at least an hour alone in a quiet room with the person to perform. Even though the truth spell suggests he needs drugs and time, I'm going to make that definite. On the field it'll have to be the old fashioned way.
